: NEW YORK (AP) -- After it was announced that Fantasia would take over the lead role in the Broadway musical "The Color Purple," she recalls her co-stars as being warm, friendly and supportive. Still, she knew in the back of their minds that they had doubt about her casting.
Perhaps for good reason. The former "American Idol" champ was taking over for LaChanze, who won a Tony for her portrayal of the downtrodden "Celie," and the 23-year-old's acting experience had been limited to a saccharine Lifetime TV biopic in which she played herself -- not exactly the most challenging of roles.
And then there was the whole celebrity factor that's permeated Broadway in recent years -- putting stars such as Usher, Brooke Shields, Deborah Gibson and other assorted A- to D-listers in stagnant productions to boost box-office.
"A lot of times they give us hard times, and they say, 'They're bringing in such and such on Broadway just to bring in money because they probably ain't gonna do so good because they haven't been acting all their life,' " Fantasia says.
That made the "Idol" winner even more determined.
"I was like, 'I have to go in here and do my best for them. It's not only me, but it's a whole cast who's been doing it for two years, and I have to hold the show up so that we will have a good show,' " she explains.
Since her arrival in April, she has done more than hold up the show. She's revitalized it. Fantasia has received rave reviews, boosted a box office that had started to slump and, some say, improved a successful commercial production that was lacking critically.
Michael Kuchwara, The Associated Press' drama critic, said Fantasia "gives the production new heart, soul and star power." And The New York Times called her "so terrific that this earnest but mechanical musical is more effective and affecting than it was when it yawned open a year and a half ago at the Broadway Theater."
"I think she's clearly given the show a new burst of energy that everyone is enjoying the benefit of," says Scott Sanders, one of the show's producers.
"When you bring in someone who is a household name, it brings out the cynics who think that it is just stunt casting and those who actually understand that she is a very talented woman who is going to take a big leap. ... It's turned out to be an incredible win for everyone."
But it hasn't come without sacrifice for Fantasia. A few hours before show time, the doe-eyed singer, clad in sweats with her hair closely cropped, lounges in her midtown apartment, looking weary -- far from her usual animated, gregarious self. As she walks around gingerly, she blurts out: "This show is kicking my butt!"
Part of what makes her so tired is the grueling schedule. She performs eight times a week and is onstage almost the entire production, singing with such a fiery passion that you get exhausted just watching her. After curtain calls and on her days off, she sleeps, sleeps and sleeps:
"I ain't never heard the sleep word so much in my life until I got on Broadway," she says with a laugh. "I'm so tired -- mentally tired, physically tired."
The content of the show has also drained her.
"Miss Celie takes a lot of out of me," Fantasia says in her soft, raspy Southern drawl, in between bites of a light lunch. "I'm being told everyday that I'm ugly. ... you can't play the part if you don't kind of put yourself in her shoes and live her life. So it's like, I carry that stuff with me."
It's easy to see why Fantasia can't shake some of Celie's blues. In many ways, she shares parallels to the famously put-upon character who originated in Alice Walker's acclaimed book. Like Celie, Fantasia has lacked in education (she quit in high school), had a baby in her teens and suffered sexual abuse (Fantasia says she was raped by a classmate).
"I put myself in her shoes in having (daughter) Zion at such a young age and dropping out of school and being in just bad relationships and disrespected," she says.
Still, even though she could identify with Celie, Fantasia wondered if she was the right person to take on the emotionally complex character, who goes through several decades and transformations by show's end.
"What makes them think that I can do that?" she recalls asking herself once she saw the show.
For Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the show's most prominent producer, it wasn't that hard to imagine. Sanders recalls watching Fantasia's emotive rendition of "Summertime" on "American Idol" -- a song she never knew until it was assigned to her on the TV reality show. She made the Gershwin classic her signature.
"I had a hunch that because of her rawness in her ability to catch material and deliver it, in such a profound and powerful way, if she could get inside the character of Celie, or let Celie get inside of her, that this could be a really unique opportunity for everyone," he says.
"I just instinctively felt as we were talking and we were getting to know her, that she could do this."
Fantasia has done so well that the show's producers have talked her into extending her engagement by four months, until January. But she hesitated before signing: not only was she drained, but she worried about taking more time away from her recording career. (So far, being on Broadway hasn't hurt her record sales -- she recently had a No. 1 hit on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart with the ballad "When I See You.")
It wasn't until she had a chat with Winfrey (she calls her "Miss Oprah") that she began to warm to the idea of playing Celie a bit longer.
"She just began to tell me how much I touched her and all the things that she felt," Fantasia recalls.
Since she's been on Broadway, she's had a lot of those experiences -- people coming up to her crying, telling her how her portrayal of Celie has moved them, even helped them make a change in their own lives. Such testimonies made Fantasia hold on to Celie a bit longer than she had planned.
"I just feel like God won't put too much on me than I can bear," she says with a heavy sigh. "As long as I feel like I'm touching somebody ... as long as I'm blessing somebody, I know that I'll be blessed."
As the show goes on, she feels as if she is not only proving something to audiences, but also to herself.
As time goes on, however, she is realizing that she is growing into a formidable actress -- and much more.
"It's teaching me discipline," says Fantasia, who believes she'll be a new woman when it's over.
"I won't look at things the same. After doing Broadway, you can do anything!"
That is because society has somehow gotten ahold of our sisters and told them that light is right having big beautiful lips and wide nose hip, thighs (all the same stuff white chicks are paying money to get) are not beautiful. These same people are walkign around looking a hot damn mess themselves.

I guess some of u dont understand, but while playing celie in the movie, she is being called ugly everyday cuz of the movie, like the role she is playing, she is not having strangers walk up to her on the street and saying u ugly, she is talkin bout the part, but she do states she relates to the part growing up and having self-esteem issues so she knows what its like to be called ugly....
fantasia is a beautiful talented artist her clothes aren't always right but that girl can blow and she is not an ugly person. If you ever read the book or seen the movie, Celie gets called ugly a lot. Fantasia is playing the role of Celie 8 times a week. Most of the kids on the site don't read the full story they just see a headline and picture and they swear it is the gospel. That is why MTO has so many members because half of them can't/won't read they just see headlines and pictures and respond. You can post 100 times that Fantasia is talking about her character Celie and someone will still comment behind you talking about " Fantasia sholl do be ugly." Like a special education child, they are touched.
I know a few people who have seen the performance, and I heard that she did a fantastic job. And it is not the easiest role to play....Lets not forget, Whoopi got an Oscar nomination for pulling the role off...The girl has talent to be able to pull off such an emotionally complex role...

I've seen both performance and in all honesty, If you never heard LaChanze, Fantasia can't compare to her singing at all. Fantasia, I just hate the sound of her talking voice. She's not that ugly, her jaw bones are just tuff in a manish kind of way and her lips are big like jay z, but makeup and transformation can do wonders to anyperson today!

When I graduated high school on my way to a HBCU I was depressed about my body and my skin. I had a little waist and a big butt thick thighs and to top that off I'm dark skinned. 10 years ago I would have never thought I would be saying this but I love havin a big butt and a little waist. I love my skin its glows and its clear. Anyone who sees me says I havent aged since those college days. I love my thick lips and big nose. Black is beautiful we are the most sought out women in the world....women around the world are getting medical procedures to look more like us...they risking skin cancer to be near this color. Wow MTO, u sure know how 2 put an "Ugly" spin on things. What a misleading headline. Let me say that I live in NYC and I recently saw FANTASIA perform Celie in The Color Purple and she KILLS IT!!! From the moment she stepped out on stage the audience gave it up 2 her and she deserved and earned her appluase!!! That girls sings her heart out and everytime I hear her sing, she touches me. It's a shame that we are living in the Beyonce and Cassie age of presentation which overshadows talented women like FANTASIA and she constantly endures critisism about her looks. There was a time where dark skinned sisters with thick lips were adored and respected in the game. Our Roberta Flacks, our L-Boogie's, our Gladys Knights, even the original Broadway Deena Ms. Cheryl Lee Ralph, but now a gorgeous voice and amazing talent of FANTASIA has 2 constantly be subjected to superficial nonsense.
