I can't agree with that and I did grow up without a father. Just for one example, take a look at any one of these *** or books on gang violence and most of these guys attribute their involvement in gangs due to the fact that they had no positive male role models in their lives. They also say they wanted the cohesiveness that they didn't have at home. How is a single mom expected to teach a boy how to be a man when she is also trying to work one or two jobs trying to provide on her own? Don't get me wrong, there are many women that have been able to raise a good man, but a heavier burden is put on the woman when no father is around.

Like I said, one of the most common reason for young men and women to join a gang is because they do not have a cohesive family unit. We need to educate our children and it makes it that much more difficult if a woman is trying to raise a man on her own.

prettylatina we definately need male companionship as youth, and I don't feel uncomfortable saying that. I'm 28 and am still learning things that a father figure should have taught me. I'm learning by trial and error and it's rough. I wish I had someone around to say "if a woman does this, maybe you should do this", or how to fillet a fish...you know little *** like than can make or break a young man. Lets not even get into a female without a father figure(my little sis) I could write a book about her behaviour because of his absence!!

As for my other comment, The father leaves becuz of the fear that he has to take care of someone other than himself/his mate. Now he leavws the child wondering and questioning if it was his fault, making the child feel guilty also.
