My goodness. What is sad is that sometimes we get caught up in living "the goodlife" that we forget that if you want change in your physical appearance, it takes hard work, that means exercise and eating right. Quick fixes have negative consequences and could result in death. What is really sad is she looked beautiful without the changes. She did not need to do this to fit in. She was already success. I hope Kanye did not encourage her to do this.
Unfortunately, malpractice is common for surgeons and $500,000 is not alot of money for the insurance companys. Most of the policy's are for $3,000,000 to $6,000,000. For those that don't know, this Dr is not only extremely talented but incredibly rich. He runs one of the most successful practices in bevely Hills and has at least 2 television shows that he hosts. He was not being greedy. Coming from a black female who is about to be in the medical profession, I am sick and tired of people questioning my abilities based on my skin color and gender when I am just as qualified as my colleagues. He just happened to be a black plastic surgeon who unfortunately performed a procedure on a woman with a heart condition who happened to be the relative of a famous person. As much as I feel for kanye and his family, she was aware of the risks to her cosmetic procedure. Very sad. Show me one successful plastice surgeon who has not been sued for malpractice before. I doubt such a surgeon exists.
If you are a surgeon, you performs thousands of surgeries. Anything could go wrong for any reason. That is why it is standard to have malpractice insurance.When something goes wrong,it is not always the doctors fault alone. There are many people who assist the doctor. e.g. the nurses,the hospital/surgical staff, the anesthesiologist.

First, I guess his mother should have done better research on the doctor she is using if he's been sued before. Second, I agree with someone else on here, doctor's get sued all the time, big deal. And third, Kanye's mother knew she had a heart problem which is why another doctor refused to do it for her, so it's no big surprise that after she had the surgery she had a heart problem and died.
Well, anyone who knows anything about medicine will tell you that having that much in claims for a famous physician is not uncommon and the mere fact that he had a couple of television shows and has treated many celebrity clients makes people want to seek treatment from him... so two out of how MANY is the question. - That's why malpractice insurance is so expensive... it's the name of the game.

*TMZ.com and local Los Angeles news stations are reporting that Dr. Donda West, the mother of rap star Kanye West, died Saturday of a heart attack after undergoing two cosmetic surgeries: liposuction on her stomach and a breast reduction. However, an official autopsy is scheduled to be performed Wednesday.
Dr. West died in the emergency room at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
According to TMZ, she was rushed there at 7:35 p.m. Saturday night after paramedics responded to a 911 "sick person call" at her home in Playa del Rey. LA's KABC news interviewed Dr. West's neighbor, Millie Art, who said she heard screaming and hollering coming from the home shortly before paramedics arrived.
A hospital spokesperson tells TMZ that West was unresponsive upon arrival in the emergency room. After unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m., according to the Web site.
TMZ is also reporting that several weeks earlier, a plastic surgeon had refused to perform procedures on Dr. West due to a pre-existing health condition that could have led to a heart attack.
"We've learned Beverly Hills physician, Dr. Andre Aboolian, was set to perform a tummy tuck and breast reduction on Ms. West, but told her she needed to get clearance from an internist whom Dr. Aboolian recommended," TMZ reported. "We're told West never went to that doctor, and subsequently had the procedures performed -- but not by Dr. Aboolian."
On the heels of that report, the doctor who actually performed the plastic surgery on Dr. West has spoken out. Dr. Jan Adams told the site that her death, which came after a tummy tuck and breast reduction, which he performed, was unforeseen and could have been caused by a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or massive vomiting. Their report goes on to say:
"Dr. Adams tells TMZ West consulted with him over a period of four months. He says she changed her mind numerous times, sometimes greenlighting the surgery and sometimes halting it.
As for the TMZ report that Beverly Hills doc Dr. Andre Aboolian refused to conduct the surgery because of a medical condition that West had, Dr. Adams said of Dr. Aboolian, 'he is sleazy and manipulating the truth to elevate his own importance.'
Dr. Adams says he did nothing wrong."
West was age 58 at the time of her death. She served as her son's manager and was also chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation, an educational nonprofit that works to decrease dropout rates and improve literacy.
Speaking of which, two civil rights groups have issued a statement condemning the attention Dr. West's death has brought along with the speculation as to the cause of death.
"The focus should be on furthering her work of stemming the astronomical drop out rate of black and Latino students. We call for the community to rally behind her work with poor, underserved students in Los Angeles and nationally," says Eddie Jones, President, Los Angeles Civil Rights Assn, and Earl Ofari Hutchinson, President, Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable.
To show support for Dr. West's work, the two organizations are holding a community rally today at 1:15pm (Pacific) at the Lucy Florence Coffeehouse, 3351 W. 43rd St. Leimert Park, Los Angeles 90008
As former chairwoman of Chicago State University's English department, Dr. West was also a member of the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc. (NABFEME). The group issued the following statement:

This whole situation reminds me of an episode of Law & Order where one doctor refused to do the plastic surgery on this patient and another doctor agreed to do it because he was greedy and money hungry. She died after the surgery and they took him to court and held his responsible for her death. Yes, doctors are human, and there are no guarantees but when they decide to practice medicine they have a responsibility and an obligation to their patients. If he was aware that she had some type of medical condition, he should NEVER have gone through with it. This situation is so sad.

Okay, so Dr. West had a medical condition that made ANY cosmetic procedure risky. Her doctor told her that, and it is MY understanding that she went ahead ANYWAY, to ANOTHER surgeon (apparently the one pictured above) and had the procedure done. So, MY whole thing is...when are we gonna stop being so STUBBORN as a people?!? Yeah yeah yeah yeah YEAH, I know some people need to get a second opinion. But I know if MY doctor was like, don't do this, because it could kill you, then that would be the end of things. I just don't understand the minds of some people.
On the OTHER side of the coin...
While this WAS a cosmetic procedure, I think some people might have it twisted as to what she was getting done. She got a breast REDUCTION, not implants. So...in THAT respect, I can understand her maybe wanting to fix that. Maybe her back hurt or it was affecting her spine. I have friends that have had it done. The tummy tuck, though? I'm on the fence about that. Ya'll are saying all she needed was exercise. Well....if her breasts were to the point where they needed reducing, exercising probably was no easy feat. Especially crunches! Yikes! So...while I think she should've LISTENED to her regular doctor or whoever, I can somewhat UNDERSTAND why she wanted to get those things done. And another thing to the exercise people, let's say she DID exercise like a madwoman. Let's say she lost..oh...70 pounds. ALL that skin where there WAS fat is STILL there, hanging. So, what to do with the extra skin? Exactly, it requires a tummy tuck. So, you see, everything's not as 'cut and dry' as saying "Oh, just exercise" and this and that. She was a VERY smart woman I'm sure, smarter than me, but sometimes our minds get clouded with the words and encouragments of others. Unfortunatly, this one turned out to be tragic. All we can do at this point is learn from her misfortune. Good Morning America JUST said...JUST now, that over 100,000 people die from cosmetic procedues EACH year. Sources tell TMZ Donda West's operation lasted eight hours -- twice as long as it should have. We're told Dr. Jan Adams began the operation Friday morning and finished Friday evening. He then sent Ms. West home, rather than to a recovery center, which we're told, would have been appropriate.
Several doctors at Centinela Hospital where West was taken, tell TMZ they believe the excessive amount of time it took to perform the procedure strongly suggests either something went wrong during the operation or the doctor was just too inexperienced.
We're told she was dead the next evening at her home before paramedics arrived.
What's more, Dr. Adams is not Board Certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

I feel soo sorry for the West family, but she should have never undergone an elective surgery if she had a pre-existing health condition. Sometimes those surgeries do last longer than four hours. It is unsafe for a healthy person to be under that long. I never thought Dr. West would have bought into the whole plastic surgery thing.
This is just a very sad situation. My heart truly goes out to Kanye. I don't think there's anything worse than loosing your mother - especially so unexpectantly - this will not be easy for him. For so long, it was just the two of them - Mother and Son - conquering the world in their own way. Then when Kanye made it successfully as a Rapper, she chose to be by her son's side, quit her job and become his business partner and Manager. How lucky he was to have his mom by his side all the way still right there nurturing him and making sure he remained the man she raised him to be. You're so right. How many of us saw "The First Wives Club"? The woman who wrote that book never saw the success of the movie because of this same thing. She also went for plastic surgery and died on the table. James Brown lost one of his wives the same exact way. When I had to have surgery for a medical reason, I was scared as all hell. What was suppose to have been a two hour surgery turned into four and they tried to make my man leave saying it was late. He told them doctors and nurses he wasn't going any where until them woke me up and I was able to actuall talk to him. Of course anything could have happened afterwards, but at least he could have said that he spoke to me before he left the hospital.

I am not sure how true this information is but on several sites overseas it was stated that she died because she refused blood. I am not sure of her religious background but if its against her religion to get blood then she made that choice. If that did occur then there was nothing any doctor could do but respect her wishes.

See? My speculation is confirmed. I judged correctly. I'm Black, and I don't let another Black person do anything surgically cosmetic on me, including any tattoos. My tattoo artist was a White boy with a loooottt of piercings and a lot of tattoos, a few of them he even did himself, so I knew he was experienced cuz that's hard to tattoo yourself. I know I'mma get massacred for saying that, but I just don't trust Black folks to do anything surgically cosmetic on me, period. If it's a medical doctor, fine. I'm worried about Kanye's state of mind too. It's different if you lose a parent to old age or an illness but to lose a parent unexpectedly and tragically is a hard pill to swallow under any circumstance....some folks never get over it.
I know Kanye's got lots of support from his friends and family but when you are that close (like me and my Mom) it's going to be a long a difficult road to continue on. This is a sad situation, but we have to stop thinking plastic surgery or cosmectic surgery is the answer. Her son has plenty of money she could have hired a personal trainer and a dietician & help loose what she felt she needed to get rid of. This surgery is not for everyone and black folks better stop following what these crazy white folks do to make themselves look good at 60 and 70 years old!! God has us age for a reason, we have strech marks for a reason. God made us for who we are if this is what she was suppose to look like at 58 he would have made her look that way! some people do look good at 58 and I thought she looked like a mom!! She did not need to go change anything to look like Kanye's sexy mom!!? We better get it together because God has alot of wake-up calls for us!This woman knew the complications of surgery and knew she had previous problems getting an ok from another doctor. Alot of doctors get into this practice for one reason and that's MONEY!! She knew this guy was sued, and if she didn't she should of check because it cost this woman her life! All I can say is if I was Dr. Jan Adams I would prepare to get sued for everything I own. Ya'll know Kanye is going for his pockets an jugular on this one. HUEmanbro - If a doctor feels that pre-existing condition could cause problems for your surgery they will not operate on you until that pre-existing condition is taken care of. For example if you are a smoker and you need surgery most doctors (good ones) will say I'm not operating until you quit smoking. This doctor seems like he was less concerned for the patients health and more concerned for his own pockets.
fiddy - yes she was a Dr. but she was a Doctor in EDUCATION NOT MEDICINE. Two different fields altogether. Also society puts a tremendous amount of pressure on women to look a certain way maybe she felt this pressure. . .who knows. Also she did have large breast and that can be extremely uncomfortable for some women so maybe a reduction was necessary.
That's horrible! Two judgements in less than a month. I am surprised he was still able to practice. His liability premium must have been sky high high. This fool was even on Oprah pitching his services that are particularly directed to women of color. He's not even a board certified "plastic" suregeon which means he probably just attended a seminar or a conference on plastic surgery procedures and never had extensive training on the procedures he performed. What a greedy, selfish, irresponsible quack!!
Before you get any procedure done. Ask the surgeon is he/she board certified for the procedure you want done and if so, then ask how many procedures have they successfully performed. Get references too! There are snakes out there that only care about making money. Watch Out!

You would be surprised.
Most importantly, the reports are now stating that his mother may not have received proper evaluation as instructed prior to the procedure and she may have insisted on it to be carried out. The facts will all come out in the end. Sit back, chill and wait....

HUEmanbro umm yes the doctor is LIABLE by all means.....if he's been in trouble before then there's no way he should of performed that surgery on her. If he was sued for malpratice before then that's enough evidence NOT to have him perform the surgery. Kanye makes way too much money and both him and Mom should of sought out a reputable doctor....there's plenty of them around. Now if this was a health issue with Dr. West then that's a different issue.

My sentiments are this man may have not been as qualified as everyone else claimed he is, and we as society are so unforgiving of a person for what he or she looks like. I think if it wasn't Donda West on the operating table and later having to die, then someone else under this man's knife would have suffered the same fate. I really can't say who's to blame because the entire situation is tragic and it sheds light on a very serious and delicate subject please take heed.
You can NEVER be too careful about researching surgeons - cardic, plastic, orthopedic, brain etc. ALWAYS do a review of the surgeon's medical board. Know that being apart of the AMA does not make a doctor a board certified plastic surgeon. There is a special plastic surgery board. Speak to the surgeon's patients. Look at his track record. Just because he was on television doesn't make him the best doctor. Some may have heard about Dr. Fobi who created the Fobi pouch procedure aka gastric bypass. He has a LONG list of patients with botched surgeries. A good doctor will request a clearance from a specialist to be prepare for a problems that could occur during or after surgery. Don't think because he is black that he is being worth of trust. A true Beverly Hills surgeon will a office in Beverly Hills and not a mailbox because he is dodging creditors, lawyers, or judgements. It is not that easy to sue for malpractice. There has to be clear negligence on the part of the surgeon/doctor to even get a lawyer to take the case.
Dr. West was in surgery for 8 hours. For a 58 year old woman she should have never been under that long- especially for a 4 hour surgery. She should have been admitted to the hospital as a precautions. He let her go home. KNOWNING that she was the mother of a celebrity, he should have made sure ALL his bases were covered. I wonder if even called her the next day after her surgery. I doubt it.
Professor West was a very intelligent woman. I don't know why she didn't do an extensive background check on this plastic sergeon. Also a previous doctor refused to do any surgery on Donda due to the fact that she had risk factors. So she was warned before that a tummy tuck may be dangerous and even deadly. This was something that she didn't even need to do. I am sorry that this happened and and I send my condolences to the family.

I have thought about getting a nose job, but since this has happened, I do not think that I want any cosmetic surgery. Why would they allow this man to do surgery, with the type of background he has? Ok..NOW i know where i know this guy from. Not from Oprah, but from a daytime talk show he was on a few years ago on ABC. The show was supposed to be the male answer to "The View". It was Dick Clark, Danny Bonaduce, Mario Lopez, and this guy. I knew he was a Dr. back then, but i didn't know he was a plastic surgeon. It doesn't look good for him, huh ? The way this is all coming down makes him look hella-shady. Here's my question: how in the world you gonna be a plastic surgeon, and you won't even pick up some Pro-Activ for yourself ???

Some of you people-ugh! DIET AND EXCERCISE IS NOT A CURE ALL! What if a woman had a nice body or was comfortable in her body then she made kids, and her body changed. Her boobs went from the ceiling to the floor? Is she supposed to just accept it?; if it' something she is very self concious/insecure/prohibits her from doing things she wants to do, then she should do what it takes to feel good about herself. Diet and exercise are often the first things that are suggested when a person has body image issues. Diet and exercise when done right, is the safest alternative to surgery.
