: MediaTakeOut.com has learned that the folks over at Newsweek magazine are now saying what millions of Black women have been saying for more than a year - that House of Dereon clothes ARE WHACK!!
Well, they didn't say it quite like that - but almost. Here's the exact quote:

I know no one is shcoked by this. I saw the line in Macy's on the clearance rack right next to rocawear. I have not seen anything on that line that was cute or worth the money they were charging. Now her new line is full of dresses I saw the ad in the new Essenence magazine. Maybe if she hires some real designers instead of her mother it would have had a chance. I am for supporting our own but if the quality sucks forget it.
No offense but if she tried taking hald of the crap of it, and tried designing some real clothes then she would fine. Between her, babyphat, and rocawear, apple bottom...all those labels. They have these big ass gold emblems on it. Nobody wants to be a walking billbored for your clothes, try designing something serious.
I am not hating on Beyonce; I am just glad that there are Black fashion designers out there. Problem with her clothing and with BabyPhat is that after a certain age ( I say 25) you really have no use for them. How would I look like walking into my classroom with glitter and their names across my chest and arse? I cant get respect from my students if I come in looking like them.
When Beyonce and Kimora start designing work clothes on the same level as Liz and Coach et al, then I will buy their clothes.
House of Dereon and BabyPhat/KLS are too expensive for clothes that I will only need on Saturday when I am with my friends going to restaurants in my area with strict dress codes that do not allow certain styles to be worn in them anyway (these places are Black owned as well).
I have been a huge fan of Beyonce's and the clothes designed by her mother since day 1! I had always anticipated the 2 of them starting a clothing line, b/c I thought it would be cool to wear the cute little outfits similar to those her and Destiny's Child wore for their videos & red carpet events. That anticipation turned to disappointment when the clothing line made its debut. Not only did they not look like something Miss Tina would design, they weren't as affordable as a lot of the competition. Hopefully, she and her mother will read this blog and apply these consumer opinions as constructive criticism. Only time will tell.

The clothes are very poorly made. I think her line is for thicker and taller girls w/body shapes like hers and not every black woman is shaped like that. I cosign w/donthateonthegreat: The price tag ain't cute at all..especially not for what you get. Now if Solange had a clothing line I would definitely try it out.
Point blank her clothing line is too expensive therefore it doesn't appeal to everybody as a whole that work hard and spend money wisely. Some of her stuff looks cute and some of it I don't even want to comment on lol...shoot even her husband Jay-Z sell stuff way more reasonable then her especially when his stuff goes on sale and he got way more money than her...i think her and moms and whomever work with her all are so full of themselves that they believe people gonna spend hundreds for a lousy pair of jeans and thousands on their dresses they are so wrong..they came out to appeal to a more privilege class of people not us everyday people and we are the very ones that make and break the "Beyonces" I guess they have peanuts for brains!!

i agree...i luv Bey, but the clothin didn't match the price tag. Last year, i was swimwear shoppin' for my miami trip n came across her lousy swimsuits and it was priced at $150 and that was a sale price. Another thing is that symbol...sorry, but i dont like it. They need to go back into the thinkin' room and brainstorm for some new ideas.
I like Beyonce` but her clothing line sucks. There are a FEW things that I saw that have the potential to be cute, the rest is crap. Well I applaud them for even trying. I am huge fan of both kimora and Beyonce. There are some things I would wear from wach line but not many. Kimora's my girl but I hate her shoes. They look to gaudy with all the fake ass gold and diamonds on them. Purses too. Too much. Now what some of you are not seeing is that there are two lines. Dereon is for the urban girls, your clubbing outfit, (those under 30) and then there is House of Dereon which is supposed to be more on the sophisticated, couture line of clothes. Same for Kimora's babyphat and KLS. Anyways, just wanted to give them props for trying. There arent many black fashion designers out there. I love Tracey Reese but there is a difference between paying $400 for a blouse and being able to afford to pay $400 for a blouse. Buy responsibly people. You're only paying for a name anyway.
The funny thing is that Tina's line is actually doing quite well and is actually a very good line (despite the 'costumes' she usually creates for folks...)
Dereon's last ad campaign was ridiculous with all that cotton candy glitz and over the top 'glamor' Bey needs to take it back to basics and reintroduce the line with decent ads and then switch it up a bit as far as some of the designs...I happen to like the line but I see why it is not 'hot' yet...

Sorry sweetie, but im a black woman and i definitely don't wear baby phat or rocawear. I always dress conservative, but thats not the point. Beyonce and her mother clothing line is poor material for a high price. While we out here trying to make a livin' we don't spend money on sumthin' that's not worth it. Think about this...everyone rockin' Dereon poor materials while she out shoppin' for Chanel, Gucci, and "purple labels". The only time she wear her clothin' is to promote it. I luv Bey, but a clothin' line is not for her.
schoni365, your very mistaken. Show me one item from Dereon's line that is classy or conservative. The line was simply horrible. It is something that a classy and/or conservative woman WOULD NOT wear. Huge logo's every where, studs, sequine, iron on lamae..no sweetheart, no one wants to wear that shyt. I thought the idea was ridiculous when she fist announced it. The only time those girls ever looked spectacular is when they were wearing some other design. You always knew the difference between a costume or dress that Tina created, and something that a person with a sense of color, cut and style put together.

She should have went with the REAL designers when they offered her a clothing line.
She thought that she was a big enough star to launch her mother as a real designer. When she brought this line out, it was named after her grandmother, she made her mother the designer and her and Solange was the only models (in the very beginning). I'm sure her family convinced her that she didn't need anybody but them. That may be true in some things, but in a clothing business you need CONSUMERS. I think that'sthe part they are just now getting. This was clearly self promotion to me.
Beyonce is the only entertainer that family members have been able to claim professions because they work with her. They only work with her, how does that make them professional. (Matthew, manager/record label - who by the way Beyonce is is ONLY sucess, Tina, designer, Solange, model, etc.). If your really a profession, don't you work for other people sometimes. Go with the pros Beyonce, tell your family to get a REAL job.

I remember them interviewing Tina and Beyonce at Macy's in Chicago and the interviewer asking Tina to clear up some things regarding the complaints people had about their clothing line, and Tina STOPPED the interview. All they did was asked her a question! I knew then they didn't know what they were doing. Beyonce just laughed. I wonder if she is laughing now.
Frankly, most of the celebrity clothing lines are overrated. The only reason any of the celebrities are into clothing lines and perfume, etc. is to make money. Some of its good, some of its bad and some do good, some do not. It a venture and they take their chances on it being a success. Most of the perfumes STINK and they clothing is too expensive, I would not think about buying any of it. Nothing wrong with their ventures though.

Ok MTO now your just hating, last year Dereon Jeans (the less tacky pairs) were sold out were sold out when they first came out. I personally have 3 pairs. True the brand has fallen off a bit but im sure it can make a comeback...And the prices are a little m ore resonable then many other brands, a pair (Dereon not House of Dereon which is more expensive) is about $68.
There is House of Dereon and Dereon (which is supposed to be the "affordable" line). House of Dereon bombed because those prices were beyond ridiculous and the clothing looks like it came from Goodwill or stolen from a homeless person. As for Dereon, she needs to quit. Everything consists of foil, sequins, big ugly jewels and so on. What grown woman in her right mind wants to be dressed in tacky ensembles like that?! I think what a lot of celebs make their mistake is that those same clothes will sell off the rack and ppl will love it if she had a contract with Sears, Walmart or something like that. It's not even Beyonce's clothing line!!! House of Dereon is her mothers line of clothes (Beyonce's mother makes all of her clothes). Beyonce and Solange are just in the ads to help promote the clothes. Beyonce is not a designer!! I would suggest that if she isn't even wearing these clothes then obviously she doesn't like them either and she expects her fans to just buy that junk to put money in her and mainly in her momma's pocket!! NOT ME!!! Kimora gets my money!!!
I saw this story on thisis50. My personal opinion on why this clothing line failed? I don't necesarily think that it was the style, The jeans and the activewear was very cute. But a year and a half ago, i went to the website to shop around and possibly buy some jeans. At that time, The clothes were no more than a size 8. If you go to the site now, They now have plus sizes, But she marketed her stuff to thin/petite women. Women of color are naturally thick and curvy. Therefore we didn't have interest in it and went to baby phat.
The problem is that the clothes are urban but marketed with an upscale price. Also, Beyonce and Solange are not the most relateable PPL in the world so they should not have been in all the ads. They should have taken a cue from J-lo and get models that look like the clientele that you are going after.
Also, start with clothes for your fan base (young girls/women in inner city) then move up to couture like Diddy did.

I saw their jeans in my ebony magazine. I liked the jeans but the quality looked poor and and the shirts looked very gaudy. Simple and elegant is the look i strive for. I saw a couple of pieces that were cute...both were jeans....and a girlfriend of mine bought a winter short waisted jacket that was very understated and not blaring with the name on it or anything....overall the line is not a aesthetcially (sp) pleasing line...some of the shirts have those shiny things on it that my granny wears on her hats and stuff for church...and I think they set the price points for most of the garments to try and create exclusivity like Baby Phat but they fall short in designs...say what you want about Kimora but for the younger urban consumer she found her lane and not much else out there...Dereon isn't even close...I don't see it in the highschools or at the college campuses...not seeing people really buy it....and then I started seeing it at bargain shopping spots....so I pretty much figured out that the line is on it's way out...when you see it next to South Pole and G unit....it's time to play taps!
In Chicago, I see plenty of girls wearing her jeans, and shirts. I have seen some decent clothes on her line, but some really awful ones too! The clothes are too expensive and are tacky and cheap looking. Just regular clothes with an emblem plastered over them in a metallic material.

Those clothes are the pits. No I don't know anyone who owns any. I am already see bits n' pieces in the outlets. People don't realize that Tina designed Destiny's child clothes before they had money, and the clothes were ugly. She then became their stylist when they got money. Which means she goes and buy or gets for free other designer's clothes and put it together with shoes, jewelry, etc. So what made them think she was great at designer? The clothes Beyonce is wearing today "BELONG TO OTHER PEOPLE".
Her line, along with a small rack of Apple Bottom, are the only 2 lines that are carried in ANY of the major department stores in the 1 mall in my area (Greenville, SC), and I don't see why. I have never seen anyone wearing Dereon anything, and the one pair of jeans that I did like stopped halfway at my hips---and they were an 11. When I turned them over, there was this huge, gaudy emblem on the back pocket that looked like Prince's name when he was "the artist". I buy jeans for comfort as well as trendiness and style, and I usually try to support my Black business owners by getting at least one item of clothing from them that I like (I usually have to find stuff in ATL or go online because I'll be damned if I'm caught dead in my local CitiTrendz), but Dereon isn't doing it for me. At 30 1/2 years old and a mother of 2 girls, I'm too damn old to be looking like a walking billboard or a damn glittery confetti mess. BabyPhat DOES have nice shirts, jeans, and dresses without the flashy logos, AppleBottom is true to name cuz mine fit me PERFECT without a belt, as well as Rocawear, Ecko Red, and Mecca. Hell, even One Tuff Babe jeans fit better than most of the name brand stuff I get and are about half the price...OTB has NEVER let me down...too bad Bey has. I want to support you ma, but you need to design stuff that fits females with curves like YOUR OWN and take some of the loudness and tackiness out the designs.
OMG speaking of gaudiness....Kimora made SURE she did it big for the tackheads...she left NO ONE out. I was at a wedding trying to focus on the matter at hand but I couldn't because of a damn cat thingie hanging off of this broad's shoes in front of me...and the heels were tall as hell also. When we all stood up for the bride's entrance, I glanced at who could be tacky enough to wear some damn BabyPhat anything with an overexposed logo or emblem to a wedding and it was my boyfriend's ex-wife. Lawd, it figured as much with her, but my point is whatever she was wearing was completely overshadowed by them cheesy ass shoes with a cheesy ass cat hanging from them...and not in a good way.
I'm no huge Beyonce fan....but the fact is, she really doesn't even need a clothing line. She basically has it ALL already.
I always felt that she was did that for her mom and her grandmother. But it just didn't catch on, probably too expensive, and not urban enough.
Nelly had the right idea, with his AppleBottoms line. Make affordable, quality jeans to fit the urban market....and build on THAT !!!

She might have some really nice pieces but I can't find them once I look at the ugly inflated price tag. Then again Bey is always sell stuff with inflated price tags. That Bey phone was over priced and she even sells memberships to her fan club. The kids are the ones who want the wack phone and fan club memberships and she pimping them too. Bey - cut that out. It aint cute. Makes people not want to support you. Not to mention all the secrets about your marriage. Why don't you keep your next album a secret. Respect your fans ans supporters.
