The difference between straightening your hair and bleaching your skin is that bleaching your skin is dangerous and have painful side effects. If the mother was bleaching her skin to appear more attractive it backfired badly, she looks a mess. BLKgodus: I'll answer. Straighten hair can be seen as the same thing but it is different. perms and relaxer have been tested. Even though some perms can totally take all your hair out. These people are doing it dealing with chemicals not tested for the conditions they are using them. Bleach, a high corrorsive chemical, was not meant for skin but for (and tested on) tough materials other than skin. Yes both situations are cosmetic> done to enhance the appearance. but it differs when it is harmful and repeatedly done to achieve effects that has long term conditions. hair can grow back or in many case there are other alternatives. BUT your skin is a humans first line of defense, it should should be moisturized not bleached! |

I've used Ambi in the past to get rid of facial discolorations but NEVER to make myself lighter! This is why it is SO important to come from a family who tells you, you ARE beautiful NO MATTER what industry standards and American and other ideals dictate. It is true that society now thinks fairer skin is the best. You look and it's everywhere. If a darker skinned person is not secure enough in their own right, they could fall victim to this foolishness and non-sense. I am blessed with a deep bronze skin tone that I LOVE! My husband and his family however are cafe au lait and lighter. I just gave birth to my son who is a caramel complexion. Love yourself first people, then NO ONE can f*ck with your mind! When you can't/don't love yourself, this is the kind of "ish" you do, bleaching yourself! |

Wow....That is sooo sad, man. I'm a beautiful dark skinned woman and I've never had a problem with my skin tone. I still attracts all kind of men from different races. God made each one of us different for a reason. And you should embrace who you are and love the skin you're in. If you don't love yourself, then who will? Putting all kinds of bleaching chemicals on your face will do nothing but make it worst. I don't think just light-skinned people are beautiful, I think ALL people of all color are beautiful. I thank you for pointing out that there are safe products and for alternative uses (not because you think lighter is better). My husband is way darker than me and gave him ambi after he came from iraq. But people have to realizes INSECURITIES and mis-information plays a big part why this form of self mutilation is in our community. |

I don't know why there is talk about BLEACHING all of a sudden, Tanning is a much bigger bussiness and is socially accepted, which makes no sense because BOTH alter the skin color and both have cancer and other risks. Let these bitches bleach if they want, their "new" color doesn't even look natural or healthy. And they will pay for the xonsquence later on. I know someone already light skinned but bleached, now her face is covered in dark patches. And it is so OBVIOUS especially since she is a red-bone. And Bleaching in NOT a black thing. Asians, Hispanics,and Indians BLEACH also. In actuality, it is really big in India. Black people are not the only ones with a color complex. People are going to do them regardless. So why keep exploiting the issue. SOME people will still bleach. As you can see, it is ILLEGAL in some parts of the world, but people still manage to attain these bleaching products. It sends an IMAGE that all black people have self-hatred. My asian friend watched the Trya show and was sshocked to see people bleaching. And I think subconciously, she thinks it might be a BLACK thing. Not to tute my own horn,I am dark skinned and get called BEAUTIFUL all the time, by stangers, friends, family, white, asian, black,latino. I have NEVER felt a need to be ligh skinned, and I NEVER felt like people lighter than me were more attracitve. I think Beauty lies can lie in anyone, regardless of skin tone. Colors, hairtexture. The two things that define, reflect and also keeps black people away from success, acceptance and in some cases love. Many shades that glow within the black community but we seem to only ACCEPT one shade which is usually more white oriented or very light. Many women on here that perm their hair would not leave the house without one, that is a form of selfhate. If we have to love ourselves we have to love ourselves fully not just only dealing with skin color. YOu can't go around sweatin skincoloring and discount perming or straightening your hair. If you are born with a certain hair texture you embrace it and not hide from it. Its very embarrasing at the growing ignorance within the black community. We have all the technology and opportunities now then we had back then yet we are growingly becoming very stupid. "dem a bleach out dem skin" were the words to a dancehall song I heard a few years back. I never really paid any attention to it because I thought it was just a silly track.
I was raised in the islands (not Jamaica) and I was never exposed to "bleaching." In fact, I always wanted to be darker; I was raised in a household that didn't really like "light" or "white" skin.
But it seems that times have changed for the worse. I am hurt to see black women destroy themselves with this practice.
Do they not realized that they aren't really lighter? Now man can destroy what God has made. Are skin color is genetically hardwired into every cell in our body.
The only way to "permanently" remove skin color is by gene therapy; thereby changing the genetic makeup of the targeted cell. I am not sure our society has even been able to successfully tap into this technology, but even if we could, why?
Look at the guy who posted "I am glad I am not dark." How sad is that? Really, black people.
What would the leaders of the civil rights movement have to say..... what would MLK say? Did he give his life for this shyt?

And for the record, I do NOT believe using a RELAXER is a form of self-hate. Not everybody want's to rock an afro, dreds or a fade-cut. Especially females! So what is a BLACK WOMEN suppossed to do that has long length to her hair? Yeah, she can probably plat it or braid it but that sh*t will get old real quick too. Don't get it twisted.
Relaxers in most cases just loosen the natural curl or wave pattern of the hair to make it more manageable...you brothers ever try to COMB OUT natural hair that is ACTUALLY LONG? So don't be so judgemental about a simple relaxer or texturizer being a self hate.
On the flip, I thing the aggressive WEAVE wearing of so many of our women is indeed questionable. Now it's ok to rock weave every blue moon...just to be fashionable or whatever, but some women are wearing that fake sh*t in all kinds of unnatural tones, dragging lengths past their behinds 24/7 like their peers don't know it's weave. Not to mention the damage it's doing to their hairlines. smdh.
In closing, I will add that skin-tone cream (bleach) is not bad if used ONLY to get rid of skin discolorations from ex: acne, burns etc. And only in moderation. But to MISUSE such a product on children or to try to change one's RACE (impossible) is dillusional and simply f*cked up.

@MsDani-Relaxers don't loosen curls, they get rid of it. Relaxers make your hair straight. A texturizer loosen up the curls and naps. I don't think relaxers are necessarily self-hatred but about 90% of black females have relaxers! So, I don't know how to interpret that. I have my hair natural though. My hair was rapunzel long, relaxers ate it up twice. Now, I am natural and rock my afro or braids or gel it back. |

It is so true that alot of BLack people (not all) favor lighter skin tones. When we see B, Halle and others, we say how beautiful they are (and they are). But a dark skinned women who is just as pretty does not get the same amount if treatment and or acknowledgement. As I grew up, I would always hear, "you are so cute TOO be dark skinned." This isn’t' the 1st time I heard of this bleaching craze in Jamaica. I remember my mom talking about this when I was in the 3rd Grade. Anyway I remember when I was 10 or 11 I went to this class for young woman and in the class one of the woman handed us bleaching cream. At the time I didn't know what bleaching cream was and the lady didn’t tell us what it was she just showed us how to use it. Well when I got home my mom saw it and threw it away. But think about it I was young and most of the girls in this class were under privileged and they tried to teach us to bleach our skin that wasn’t right! |
