: MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that actress Angelina Jolie is having trouble finding play dolls for her daughter Zahara. Here's what Ang had to say in a recent interview:
I want to teach [my kids] about all religions [and culture], and I’m trying to find a way to do that. And when it comes to the subject of adoption, like when my daughter, who’s African, wants her hair to look straight like mummy’s . . . and I look for a Barbie that’s African, and the African Barbie has straight hair!We get your outrage Angie ... but there are plenty of NON-BARBIE dolls that have Black features. Girl ... can you PUH-LEASE give Jada a call. She'll hook you up....And you know, why has Disney never made a film with an African-American princess?
I feel her...she has a good point, that pisses me off with the black barbies too. Angelina- all that money you got- you can probably commission Mattel to make you a doll with some African hair!
Thats sad- a white chick knows the importance of her daughter seeing and understanding that she is beautiful without trying to look like the majority, meanwhile you got plenty of BLACK parents who are so brainwashed that they encourage that crap!
Angie earns another 30 pts in my book!
Well most "African American" women perm their hair straight anyway so you all don't have anything to say. F^ck those people have someone make you a damn doll all that money you got. I commend what she is trying to do though. And maybe that's why she keeps Zaharas hair like that. That is her natural hair and she is trying to teach her to love herself for who she is maybe some of you ought to follow her example. It's a shame that has to come from a white woman. Still good with me Angie!
DID YALL PEEP HOW THEY HAVE MATCHING BAGS? (am I late)
That is TOO CUTE FOR WORDS!!!
It took you to adopt a child before you cared about that? Us BLACKS have been dealing with that since them dolls been on the market. I'm glad you care and all, but this is not news to anyone on this site.
Just do something about it since you have the status to...
I commend what she is trying to do though. And maybe that's why she keeps Zaharas hair like that. That is her natural hair and she is trying to teach her to love herself for who she is maybe some of you ought to follow her example. It's a shame that has to come from a white woman. Still good with me Angie! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ WELL PUT!!!!!!! I could've said it better myself. I like that Jada allows her daughter Willow to wear braids and keeps her hair natural also. She will most likely want to straighten it as she gets older, just like most African American women, but Angie should seek advice from Jada. (I'm actually agreeing with MTO! lol)
Lis:
lol, still cute with the matching...
If she has the money to get Valentino to custom make a purse I'm sure she can get someone to market more options when it comes to ethnic dolls.
Remember the KENYA DOLL ya'll?? How racist was that? Like all people in Kenya have thick azz braids and wear that dayum pattern? SMH
Hope she does something about it
@ HotLatte that is what i was thinking but got mad! my kids have so many barbies. some w/ heads some w/o! lol! they have all kinds too! the ones that had curly hair have been brushed out- they look horrible! so that is exactly correct.
instead of her always trying to make a deep choice- she should just let the little girl be a little girl !
As a collector I can tell you they are out there. You just gonna pay a pretty penny for them. I particularly LOVE the Byron Lars collection! [link to external website removed]

@ I LOVE NERDS ITS NOTHING WRONG WITH NAPPY HAIR, BUT OUR HAIR COMES IN A VARIETY OF TEXTURES AND FOR SO LONG DOLL MAKERS HAVE MADE ALL BLACK DOLLS WITH NAPPY HAIR, WHICH IS A STEREO TYPE. WE AS BLACK PEOPLE COME IN AN ABUNDANCE OF FEATURES. SO IM JUST GLAD THAT SOMEONE OTHER THAN US SEE THE LACK OF VARIETY IN BLACK DOLLS. THATS IT
With all her money and influence, she should have no problem with commissioning Mattel Toys to MAKE her some custom ones of Black Barbie with natural hair! This combined with getting her some dolls from her native Ethiopia (as another Chick posted earlier) should solve the cultural identity problem.
I was watching a news segment on TV a few years ago in which little children were shown two dolls, one White & one Black, & asked to choose which one was prettier, more desireable. Nearly all of them chose the White doll. Especially the Black girls.
Be real. The big toymakers like Mattel would never make a Black barbie doll with Afro-kinky hair, because the doll wouldn't sell as well as their White barbie dolls. It's not fair but THAT IS THE TRUTH.
Like some people have commented, I agree that Angie has enough money to create a doll for Zahara, if she wants to.
Now for everyone who is complaining about the lack of Black dolls, and how Mattel needs to step up to the plate & create one...gimme a damn break. Quit complaining & create your own product! Be creative. If you see their is a product or a service lacking, then YOU step up to the plate and do something about it!
since 1954 (Brown V. Board of edu) and Dr. Kenneth Clark’s infamous “doll test” that DEMONstrated that not only did black children overwhelming preferred white dolls over black dolls, this preference shed some light on how black children perceive themselves compared to whites.
what's sad is that 50yrs later this pattern is still consistent when the experiment is replicated, and most children, black and white children still prefer white dolls over black dolls, and associate black dolls with being "bad", ugly, or negative, and both white and black children associate white dolls with being "nice", pretty, and positive.
Sad isn't it??
As subtle as it may seem to unconscious and unaware people, it is not just dolls, especially when one considers the psychology warfare that black endured and continue to endure in this country.
black children's consistent and continued preference for white dolls over black ones sheds alot of light on how black girls perceive themselves and how the dominant culture’s standard of beauty affects them into adulthood.
SOME OF YALL NEED TO ELEVATE UR ANALYTICAL ABILITY
Obviously she aint tryin hard enough!! I just bought a nappy barbie for my lil sister at toysrus during thanksgiving break. I think her name is "Top model Nikki". Anyway she has a nice lil fro and a nice dark brown skin color. I just dont like how skinny she is...but I guess she is a "model". Oh and there are also bratz dolls that have "natural puffs". I remember my sis recently got a sasha bratz doll with a blond-brown afro puff, and a kids sasha bratz doll with a chocolate puff. There ARE natural dolls, we just need to buy them when they come out so that more are made. Here is the doll I just bought [link to external website removed]
Oh yeah and they got a new doll line thats like american girl but they are from different countries. Anyway the doll is from nairobi (sp?) and she has a nappy "twistout" fro. Plus she comes with her own book and everything....but she is like 100 dollars so i aint tryna dig that deep for my sis lol.
at CeCe U cant tell me that the majority of black people dont have curly to nappy hair. I think angie is doin a good thing by giving this child some hope in a world where straight hair is the ultimate, no matter how your real hair grows. I think its weird how there are so few black women rocking their natural hair texture.
Jahlove:
I'm sure people are able to analyze, but we are on a gossip site.
The preference for white product goes very deep. IT has everything to do with the mass media, but I just don't think a post is the place to get into that.
The effect of the images seen throughout our lifetime go, for the most part, unacknowledged. The imagery fed to us by the media is deeply rooted in race and racism.
Just like Angelina didn't acknowledge the lack of variety in Black dolls until it affected her personally. Now it's a problem. We've been dealing with things like that all of our lives...
You can got to Africa and adopt some Pigmee babies and then she will have someone to play with. Get the Fukk outta here!!! The doll does not need to be a Barie, they have plenty of dolls that have different ethnicities and cultures. I can see you are really raising her to appreciate her culture, since when a lil african children walk around with expensives azz hand bags???
@ Jahlove
I concur 100%. The reason why these young black girls would view being white as more desirable is because they have not been instilled with BLACK PRIDE. We already live in what I feel is the most racist country in the world, we have nearly 400 years oppressive history to look back on. The only way Black children will have pride in their skin & their hair texture, be it straight, wavy, curly, kinky - is if they are TAUGHT it.
Otherwise the subconcious self-loathing will only continue down through time.
cutenkinky Flag post Is the "Kenya" doll still on the market? I used to have a Barbie with on afro. Angelina has enough money that if she wants, she can request Mattel to custom make her a Barbie.

HELLO! This broad is so full of crap and it puzzles me how people can't pick up on the bullsh!t she's putting down. She's fake and she's being subtly insulting to Black women. How ironic also that many of us in the past on MTO,have said the color of a doll a Black girl plays with is important but got attacked by Negroes on MTO,who told us to "calm down it's just a damn doll".LOL Now massa Angelina says it and she gets praised with her fake, flat ass. Oh the little child wants straight her like mommy...GTFOOH! That child doesn't give a damn about her hair yet,to the point that Angelina Jolie has to make it an issue in an interview. Oh and by the way, the child is from Ethiopia Angelina. Why can't you say that? Why go along with the YT agenda/conspiracy, to minimize the countries of Africa by lumping them all together and only referencing the continent when discussing the region. It's phonies like her who act upset at other dogs like Sarah Palin because they think Africa's a country instead of a continent. She's just another fake ass white clown like her boyfriend...anyone catch Brad on Larry King recently....real genius huh ?? LMAO! Learn to see through the bullsh!t Black people, this broad is fake.
I already said they got natural dolls already, including ones at major stores like toysrus. But it would be nice if she invested in making some of her own. And yall are on point about her acting as if Africa is a country. Since she's been there so many times she should know that Africans can be the most diverse people on earth. there are some darkskinned africans with straight wavy hair, to the light skinned south Africans with nappy kinky hair. We are very much diverse WITHOUT the help from "Massa"
Nappy hair can be long too BITCH! Yall still stuck in that slave mentality. while u steady burning that [EXPLETIVE] out yo damaged ashy scalp with them relaxers, imma be having my BEAUTIFUL napps to keep me warm this winter. --------------------------------- I saw this, and it broke my heart. The limited amout of black dolls is not an oversight, there's an intentional psychology behind this.
i think sometimes our people underestimate the power of reinforced subliminal messages on the psychic..europeans know this well, and have used it very well in altering the perceptions of many brown and black people globally, first via religion and education, now they use media to maintain those created perceptions
@the readers who are saying some of the dumbest s***. What AFRICAN-AMERICAN woman do you know was born with STRAIGHT HAIR???? I am offended that some of you think some of us are born with straight hair. I have not seen a woman yet of African-American descent whose hair is naturally straight. Its not in our genes. Quit being brainwashed. I am proud of Angelina and what her intentions are. Surely there are Black dolls on the market, but just like the Kenya doll who had braids and African attire on, WE Blacks will have something RACIST to say. Get over it. My goodness. Maybe that Kenya doll isn’t a reflection of you but she is a reflection of true AFRICAN culture. Honestly, to be African-American is to be made of many different races because none of us are PURE because of our past. Do some research folks. Its not that hard. Quit settling. And I do not even let me my daughter play with the BRATZ doll because they are borderline Prostitutes if you ask me, Under clothed and Over accessorized with Makeup. I think it sends the wrong signal to smaller girls. By the way, Mattel just WON and infringement suit and all BRATZ dolls will be pulled from the shelf. When will BLACKS stop using a Double-edged sword for everything? If they create an African-American dark, here are the things that we will say: Why is she so dark? Why is she so light? What does she have on that? Why is her hair like that? Why are her lips like that? Give me a break people. They will never be able to create a doll down to the nail for African-Americans because again, to be African-American is to be everything, so honestly, any doll of color they place on the shelf really has a piece of us in them.

we complain about movies and tv shows perpetuating stereotypes about us, but when giving a chance to change the system we don't, instead we settle for being agents of our own destruction in the name of "making that money"
we complain that the arabs and asians in our communities own all the business and don't treat us right, yet we are not angry enough to start businesses to serve the needs of our people and compete with the arabs and asians.
until black folks can step up to the plate and use our so called spending power to become producers, and produce generational wealth, we'll have to settle for what is given to us by others

Oh please honey spare me the nonsense. I am so sick of her. Great points THE_WAY. Oh she's so concerned and conscious but can't say Zahara is Ethiopian and not refer to her in generic terms as African. Zahara is still young and rumps around like all little children and she messes up her hair while she plays. Please believe she's not losing any sleep over her hair texture, that Angelina's faux issue.
@ Blkgodus I was angry with Angelina and Madonna at first for adopting Zahara and David but then I said to myself, Will and Jada ain't doing it. Oprah ain't doing it. Denzel and Paulette ain't. It isn't like they don't have to money or the resources.
These children have access to resources they probably wouldn't have dreamed about in their native land and I am not going to be mad at Angelina, Brad, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman or John McCain for doing what a lot of Asiatic people are too damn selfish to do because they are more interested in "bling bling and whips."

My mother and aunts are BLACK WOMEN, an no their hair isn't stick straight, but it damm sure isn't tightly curled or "nappy" as many people say. It has VERY soft waves...
(while I can't speak for everyone) I wasn't trying to imply that ALL people of African decent had straight hair, I was saying that they don't ALL have curly hair. There is a plethora of shades and textures of hair when you speak of African People.
The problem is that their shouldn't only be ONE Black doll. Black consumers should have options just as White's do.
Dolls for whites come with many different eye colors and hair colors. We have no variety to speak of or choose from.
The KENYA doll was put on market for BLACKS in AMERICA. It doesn't reflect the culture of AFRICA either. Not everyone wears those patterns. Africa has modernized areas and people dress just like you and me.
As far as you saying that dolls on shelves are reflections of Blacks, you cannot be serious so I won't even comment on that...
it's still good for Anjokelina to get this reality check though about certain african issues (hair)... hopefully, she's not making an excuse to get zoohara any ole thang. now i know some of y'all mighta noticed that i spelled the little girls name wrong but until she gets her hair styled and stop looking like a zoo up there then i can correctly pronunciate her name.
Jahlove please you know what bashmentyard meant. Regardless of how the present day African nations were founded, they are still independent countries recognized by the U.N. and world community at large. No American or Canadian describes their self as a North American nor does any French or German individual immediately identify themselves as European first. Everyone describes themselves by their nation of origin or citizenship;including Black people born on the continent of Africa.

I'm not arguing that some people choose to not use deeper analytical thought, because the statement was true. They just come on here to be entertained and post their little blurbs and keep moving. That's all.
I find it sad that a WHITE mom like Angelina ACTUALLY has more ETHNIC identity than some BLACK moms who buy white dolls for their children. @ASuperiorMind- I have to disagree with your comment sister. There is NOTHING wrong with Angelina refering to her daughter as AFRICAN. Hell she is AFRICAN. Where do you think Ethiopia is LOCATED??? SMH. Some of you BLACK folks act like its a CRIME to be AFRICAN. Please don't lose sight that AFRICA is THE BIRTH PLACE of ALL MODERN CIVILIZATIONS!!! Hell I wish I could claim being from AFRICA instead of a black american. AT LEAST if I were an AFRICAN, I would have some PRIDE and KNOWLEGE of myself and where I came from, and what language I speak, and what traditions/customs shaped my heritage. Some of yall need to wake up.
@ OH SO BORED As far as you saying that dolls on shelves are reflections of Blacks, you cannot be serious so I won't even comment on that..., any doll of color they place on the shelf really has a piece of us in them.
Apparently you shouldn’t comment because that is not what I said and you took it totally out of context. I said that any doll you see on the shelves of Color have a piece of us in them, not that they reflect YOU are I individually. If you would read my text, it relates to the fact that AFRICAN-AMERICAN is a makeup of many ethnicities, not just one. No, all Black people do not have KINKY TWISTY HAIR, but I will be damn if you have a NATURAL YAKI NO 8, maybe a birth, but just grow a little bit. If we are so upset over it, like many others are saying, why wont WE start a company and market such a doll. See how much success you get, I am just being honest.
BTW, I am sure when KENYA was on the market there were other BLACK dolls on the shelves, maybe not as many, but some. And again, see KENYA REFLECTED TRUE AFRICAN CULTURE, not AFRICANS who have been WESTERNIZED

I agree completely with this....Good comment too @ Guess...
We have to do better as a community of teaching children to appreciate the beauty in their natural features...
ASuperiorMind,
I am an Afrikan first, and a Liberian second. my Ethiopian friends are Afrikans first then Ethiopians second.
during the liberation movement in Afrika, it was the Afrikan people, not the Kenyans, Algerians, etc.
In the Afrikan culture it is about first and fore most the COLLECTIVE, then the individual
@GuessJeans,
WELL SAID@UR FIRST COMMENT. VERY WELL SAID
@ASuperiorMind,
let me also add that the reason native Afrikans will first tell you their specific country is due the the fact that most people think Afrika is one country, so most Afrikans, instead of saying Afrikan, we are more specific when we say our contry of origin in the continent.
sometimes we use it interchangably, and if someone wants a specific country we say the country
@ohsobored: Zahara has curly hair and she needs to see a doll with that type of hair. Especially when she gets in elementary school. I take it you're not a parent yet. If so, you can learn a lot about this issue.
Look at people like Michael Jackson, & Lil Kim who bleached themselves to death. There were no peer identifiers for them to feel good in their own skin.
My comment was focusing on the fact that Black families have minimal options so the shelves aren't reflective of us, because we come in more than 2 shades: Light and Dark. That's what is put out on the shelves and marketed toward our community.
That brings it back to the why Black children prefer white dolls. The marketing industry is genius. A lot of Black moms purchased that (Kenya) doll for their daughters, but not many of those children cared because the doll didn't look like them. The only thing in common was the fact that her skin was darker than the other dolls on the shelves. How many children have you seen walking around your city with African clothing on? (I'm assuming you live in or close to an American city)
...I'm tired of typing. Point blank; Blacks should have more options, and it shouldn't take a WHITE WOMAN to be personally affected before some big company decides to do something about it. America is still a very racist country, and that fact gets denied until a white person acknowledges an aspect of discrimination that we BLACKS have recognized all along. Like the shyt wasn't real until a white person validated it.
GuessJeans
UGGGGH **SIGH** . No one is running away from being African or denying their African descent. You're full of it anyway and I guess today is no exception. FYI many of us as well as the white media refer to black people in this country as African Americans.Join in the pride honey ,being simply called Black American ,went out in the 80's. Where the hell have you been ? You seem to be unable to see the big picture. By the media constantly showing SELECT areas on the continent that are troubled and not being specific,it paints the entire continent with a broad bush. What other continent on the planet is discussed in such broad terms. When we discuss Canada or the United States,do we refer to them as just North America? A person from the U.K. or France wouldn't say they're from Europe, they'd say they're from the U.K. or France. Do people from South America refer to themselves as South Americans or as Mexicans,El Salvadorians or Argentinians for example? There is a mind game being played on people that the entire continent of Africa is war torn and impoverished. That is a lie. A lot of people WHITE and Black are retiring to countries in Africa and building big homes with all the amenities of the west. However by minimizing the accomplishments of those countries, it makes it easier for the western powers to continue to rub and pillage the continent. All the while some of our people are fooled in to thanking the oppressors for their token "small favors".
Give this woman a break. She is speaking as a mom, not a rich snob, and I respect that. I am glad that she publicly addresed the fact that Barbie does not make dolls with various textures of hair to represent different ethnicities. Every white person does not necessarily know everything about African American culture, where to buy certain things, or how to style hair...whatever. That does not meant that they can't be good moms.
@focus:
Not sure why that comment was made toward me. I understand that she has curly hair, and I acknowledge the fact that she should have dolls that reflect her. I was in agreement with it. What I said was not all Blacks have "nappy" hair. Clearly her daughter doesn't either.
I don't have to be a parent to identify this problem. I was once a child and am now a grown woman and I recognized this issue throughout my life.
Not sure what Mike and Kim have to do with this topic
let me also add that the reason native Afrikans will first tell you their specific country is due the the fact that most people think Afrika is one country,
- - - - - - - -
And that's my point. The media has helped to misinform people. Ancient Nubians,Egyptians, and Zulus took pride in their respective identities and territorial borders. This pride is nothing new to present day Africans but the White media has an agenda to confuse the issue and minimize the sovereignty of their countries. So if the powers that be tell you they need to invade "Africa" and stop the genocide, most people including many blacks would co sign the invasion for "humanitarian" reasons, despite the fact the actual nation that's invaded is Cameroon where there is no war or genocide and not the Congo that was broadcast on the web and nightly news channels. Look at the big picture... please.
I think Black children prefer White dolls because in their upbringing, most people are taught that Black represents EVIL and White represents good, this is why they want a White doll, then don’t forget that the fact that what we see on tv. How many Black women on television and in the media do you see truly reflect the culture which they are?
And in reference to the Kenya Doll to those children who didn’t care. The children probably didn’t care because the PARENT didn’t teach them what that doll actually represented.
Here is a fact about the KENYA Doll taken from [link to external website removed] Five years ago, Tyco Toys launched its Kenya doll line. Today, Kenya stands as an example of African-American beauty for many young girls. The toy company says its newest Kenya doll, Hairplay Fun Kenya, is the ultimate African-American hairstyling doll. This soft, vinyl beauty comes with colorful beads, rubber bands, a special styling guide and magical hair lotion. Tyco also introduces Bedtime Kenya, a cuddly soft doll dressed in a comfy nightgown. Bedtime Kenya comes with a special book of poems and illustrations. After a tuck-in and a little bedtime reading, Kenya, who has eyes that open and close, and her bedtime pal are sure to get a good nights sleep. If you read, you will see it says an EXAMPLE, not that she was EVERY BLACK girl, but that she was ONE representative of the BEAUTY of a BLACK young girl. If you want more, read here: [link to external website removed]
i understand where she is coming from u wants her kids to be able to look at representations of themselves she wants to teach each one of them about their heritage/culture especially since their adopted... anyway but @ TheBrokenSilence black women arent the only women that straighten their hair latinas asians even white people straighter their hair i grew up with latinos/blacks and alot of latino girls had curly perms so what they cant get a curly perm because they werent born with curly hair u cant tell someone that oh you are not representing your race because u were your hair a certain way i have a mexican and a puertorican friend both of them get perms and i dont my hair is curly i just blow dry it or some so not just one particular race straighten their hair
StopHatin1st:
I KNOW that she was supposed to be an example, what I was saying was she ultimately wound up be representative of an entire continent of young girls.
I'm not sure if you are debating or in agreement with me. I stated that the issue has a LOT to do with the media. Media includes advertisements, marketing, television, movies, etc.
Blacks in America rarely see positive images of Black culture, so they would rather deny the culture entirely than to embrace the beauty of it or refuse these negative images placed upon them.
ASuperiorMind,
I agree with ur last comment, but i had to clarify the statement about Afrikans not being AFrikan, and i say that that as a native born Afrikan. again, we take pride in our individual identities, but we are COLLECTIVE first and foremost. I am from the Kpelle tribe and i take pride in that, but I am Liberian first and fore most. I am Liberian and i take pride in that, but am an Afrikan first and foremost. THE AFRIKAN CULTURE IS ABOUT THE COLLECTIVE
when borders didn't exist we took pride in the families we were raised in, but the tribe was first and foremost...my first 10yrs were spent growing up in a village in Afrika, so what i am saying is how we lived and still live life...i didnt have media to tell me that.
ur right the media is a tool for brainwashing and percetion creation and management. i think sometimes our people underestimate the power of psychological warfare using the media. for example the western meida and Zimbabwe is an example.
as an individual who has grown up in the native afrikan culture, and the afrikan american sub culture, and has lived and traveled in other countries, trust, i am a big picture thinker. i am not stuck in an american bubble
YAY 4 Angelina!!!! You Go Girl! I am not mad at her at all for addressing an issue that many black mothers have secretly endured this frustration inside when shopping for dolls for their daughters! She is definately someone that can get that changed so we can find black dolls with black hair in every toy store. LOVES IT! She seems to be a Good Mama strait up! (The matching bags R to die for) She Loves her adopted babies and her biological ones! I salute her.... @ kneequa Good Info.. Thanks..
LOL @ REALLY, man she isn't not gonna come to the SLAUSON SWAPMEET, LOL. What's up my fellow South L.A.'n ?
I am happy though that they attempted to do something with that girl's hair. She needs to hit up Jada or some other Black actresses.
I applaud her attempt at trying to find a Black doll with BLACK hair, but honey good luck because they just don't exist, but with all your money, just have them make one for you!
I AGREE THAT A CHILD HAVING COUNTLESS EXAMPLES THAT REFLECT THEMSELVES IS HELPFUL TO THEIR SELF ESTEEM. PERIOD. THAT INCLUDES TOYS, ROLE MODELS, CHARACTERS ON TV/IN MUSIC AND INDIVIDUALS THEY INTERACT WITH.
EVEN THOUGH I HAVE "OTHER" ISSUES WITH ANGELINA, I WILL GIVE HER SOME POINTS ON THIS ISSUE. AT LEAST SHE IS TRYING. BUT ALL IN ALL, SHE WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO REALIZE THAT IT'LL TAKE MORE THAN A DARN "TOY" TO HELP HER PRECIOUS BLACK DAUGHTER WITH SELF PRIDE.
ANYWAYZ, I CO-SIGN WITH @ASUPERIORMIND, THERE HAS BEEN TONS OF SUBLIMINAL "FILTERING" OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA. MANY PEOPLE OVERLOOK THE FACT THAT EACH AFRICAN COUNTRY IS DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST...WITH UNIQUE HISTORIES, CULTURES AND PEOPLES. ZAHARA IS AN "ETHIOPIAN" CHILD FROM AFRICA...NOT SIMPLY A LITTLE GIRL FROM SOME SO-CALLED HOMOGENEOUS REGIONALIZED NATION OF THE WORLD CALLED AFRICA.
She makes an excellent point. The african american barbies are caramel with straight hair . My assumption is that Mattel or Tyco, (the manufacturers of the dolls) wanted to present the relaxed hair version of the dolls which is more current of course. Most black women have permed or relaxed hair. @stophatin!..you make a good point...up until you say that most people prefer white dolls because they are taught black is evil.. Please clarify that. Perhaps you are referring to an older generation, and not a more current one?

Well atleast she is trying and she is not a BLACK woman, hell, you have little Black girls with Black parents who do not understand who they are so just as Angelina you are sayin that it will take more than a doll for her will be the same thing to say to Black women about self-pride! Its so easy to point the finger, yet we fail to realize the many pointing back at us
First off this is not the first time someone has made that argument, but since it's Angelina, it's a big deal. Second off there is a black princess, she has a slave name, it's called Maddy. Look it up. This was a year ago when they made her. Don't know when a movie is coming out if any. Third, Walter Disney, he was a racist. The Mickey Mouse skits were extra racist back in the day. They had him talking smack about Native Americans, they had black maids and they had Mickey cracking on Africans. Look it up, this [EXPLETIVE] ain't nothing new!!
And when she holds Pax, she speaks of Asian history and so on...I know she is trying to do a good deed but those kids are going to be as confused as ever!!We already know that Mommy aint wrapped to tight wearing human blood around her neck. Brad better never leave. Angie would really go crazy...girl stop...lol
But those matching purses are adorable!!!
I HAVE ALWAYS MADE SURE MY DAUGHTER HAS AFROCENTRIC DOLLS , I WOULD NEVER BUY A DOLL WITH STRAIGHT HAIR ESPECIALLY BARBI. SHE NNEDS TO BUY THE VIDEO CALLED SONGHI PRINCESS WHICH HAS BEEN IN MY COLLECTION FOR OVER 15YRS . OUR CHILDREN WILL LOVE THEMSELVES MORE WHEN THEIR HISTORY IS TAUGHT . A TREE WITHOUT ROOTS WILL NOT GROW .WE NEED TO TEACH OUR SON'S AND DAUGHTER'S SELF LOVE . LOVE THE SKIN YOU ARE IN WE COME IN A BROAD SPECTRUM OF HUE'S .

Ahhhh STFU ! Doesn't this skank travel around the world every five seconds. A lot of black and white families don't have the money to fly around the world and learn stuff about different countries. She sounds like a big retard despite the fact she's been to several different African countries. If you want to make a difference over there build schools and stuff like Oprah.Help the people over their build up their own communities instead of taking one freaking child out of millions away to Hollyweird and buying her designer hand bags. ROTFLMWAO Let the people learn to do for themselves instead turning yourself into some white God. I can see she's full of crap why can't you ? DOUCHE BAG
focus Flag post Zahara has curly hair and she needs to see a doll with that type of hair. Especially when she gets in elementary school. I take it you're not a parent yet. If so, you can learn a lot about this issue. ******************** They do not NEED TO SEE A DOLL WITH CURLY HAIR NOR ONE WITH THEIR FEATURES!!I have a 7 year old...who is a lighter complexioned child of the black race. Her hair is also somewhat curly. I do not seek out a doll that looks like her and has her complexion and hair. It's not going to happen! the doll's hair will be nappy and she'll say.."But mommy i can't comb it.. . The black dolls with relaxeD STRAIGHT HAIR are more current and STILL represent us, JUST with A relaxed hair look. The white ones represent whites with relaxed hair. If she gets excited when she sees a white barbie doll, with blue eyes, then i will buy it. I am not going ot be ignorant and racist and tell my child that we need to go to another store to find a colored doll that looks like you. it's ridiculous! and as a mother i have learned that children do not care. they just want a doll whose hair they can comb! lol! You can teach them their culture without barbie's interference!
Mattel does make ethnically correct dolls. In fact, they have some really beautiful ones with curly hair. Has Angie never heard of the Byron Lars collection for Barbie? Oh well, maybe not.
Disney is also making a film with its first Black princess. I don't know why it's called The Frog Princess, but they are in production or post production on that now. Hate that name, there has been talk of changing it.

NOT SURE WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM...MY ORIGINAL POST NOT ONLY INDICATED THAT IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN "TOYS" TO UPLIFT SELF ESTEEM IN CHILDREN, BUT ALSO ROLE MODELS, TV, RADIO, FAMILY ETC...
I DONT CARE IF IT IS A WHITE OR NON-WHITE MOTHER WHO IS TAKING CARE OF THE CHILD, THE ISSUE IS THAT WE NEED TO INSURE THAT OUR KIDS ARE RAISED APPROPRIATELY AND GETTING THE SELF-PRIDE THEY NEED. ANGELINA WOULD GET THE SAME COMMENTS FROM ME HAD SHE BEEN A "BLACK" CELEBRITY BRINGING UP THE ISSUE OF BLACK/AFROCENTRIC AWARENESS IN OUR CHILDREN'S TOYS.

That was the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So you let you're child dictate to your grown azz what she wants??? Have you ever said to her that you can't comb her hair when it gets extra tangled? I'm sure you have, she's only repeating she's heard. It's your job instill cultural beauty.

TO ALL OF THEM WHO SAYS ZAHARA AIN'T AFRICAN CAUSE SHE'S FROM ETHIOPIA ARE JUST PLAINLY STUPID WELL IGNORANT MUST I SAY!
FIRST AND FOREMOST, ETHIOPIA IS IN AFRICA FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!! AND YOU GUYS KEEP ON SAYING SHE'S ETHIOPIAN BLAH BLAH BLAH.. GUESS WHAT?? ETHIOPIA IS IN AFRICA! THEREFORE.. YOUR GURL ZAHARA IS AN AFRICAN JUST LIKE YOU GUYS!!!
IT'S JUST LIKE SAYING CHINESE PEOPLE AIN'T ASIAN CAUSE THEY FROM CHINA OR FILIPINO PEOPLE AIN'T ASIAN JUST CAUSE THEY FROM THE PHILIPPINES..

IT'S SO MUCH EMBARASSING TO SEE YOU GUYS POST LIKE THAT.. AND I'M GUESSING IT'S FROM YOU BLACK PEEPS..
JUST HAD TO SAY IT OUT LOUD.. PEACE!
Angelina, Madonna and all the rest of those Hollywood stars are adopting those babies because they are trying to purge themselves of the sins of their fourfathers. I do commend them for their acts though. It wouldn't be so daring if they adopted a so-called African American (Black) child but the fact of the matter is that straight African seems more exotic. I truly believe that her and Madonna are truly trying to be good, direct contrast with their nature.
Ok everyone...let's be fair and not bash Angelina. Although you may not agree with her style per say, making comments about her having blood around her neck is not called for.( not sure if she still does that anyway). The point is this woman embraces people of every culture and dialect. She literally walks the walk and does not just talk the talk. Even Oprah THOUGHT of and talked of bringing home one of the african girls from the village, yet ultimately changed her mind. Who knows why? I like Oprah and everything, but what Angelina is doing far execedes what Oprah is doing and it last a lifetime. To take a child into your home and provide love, and wealth and diversity is worth more than anything in this world . I want to take the time out to salute her ! Oh, and that fine azz Brad too! -:)
i relly respect angalina,im almost sure that matel would make a curlly head barbie for her if they dont have one already. i do know that there are lots of other companies that have dolls that look like and have hair, like us! when i was a little girl in the 60's for some reason i didn't want to play with the white dolls and when i got my first black doll i didn't like her either because she didn't look like me.every doll i buy my grand daughter WILL represent her and her cultur!
@ASuperiorMind- First off the problem with labeling Africa as an entire country is not Angelina's problem. Of course we all know the Western powers do not credit soveign countries in Africa but over-emphasize the improverished countries. I'm not understanding what this has to do with Angelina commenting that her daughter is from Africa?! Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with Angelina stating Zahara is from Africa. It's not her duty to educate the masses of ignorant Americans who think Africa is just one big ole' country. She's stated in several interviews that Zahara is from Ethiopia. She even had her biological child born in Tanzania (correct me if I'm wrong) so clearly she is not only a well travelled woman but is also intelligent and cultured as well.
I think it's great that she wants her daughter in touch with her cultural/ethnic roots. She has also said she wants Zahara and her other children to learn and understand their native languages. Seems like an excellent down to earth well-rounded mother to me.
I don't know why some of you guys are dissing her so hard. Angelina and Brad are doing more for some improverished countries in Africa than some of yall right now as we speak. It's like Jahlove said. We have so many complainers in our communities who talk that stuff but aren't about taking responsiblity and action on improving our communities.

When you remove your Willie Lynch slave chip, then you'll understand the grown-up conversation at hand. ***************** Calm down. why so hostile? My point is that dolls are for fun. dolls are selected by the child. Why would i dictate that? what i have noticed in watching my 7 year old play with a doll is that she combs the hair..over and over and over again. Let's be realistic. Blacks relax their hair...not all but most. so yes, i purchase her what she LIKES. i no longer play with dolls, so toys that she chooses should be her choice, not my choice! i will not dictate that now nor in the future. Again, teaching her about her culture is seperate and i do not need Barbie's assistance in doing that..Barbie is her doll. and for the record she has one in every color..including the Hannah Montana doll! smdh
@ Some of yall COONS saying "what, she think all BLACK folks got kinky, curly hair": HELLO! As a majority we do have KINKY, CURLY LUXURIOUS LOCKS!! When did having curly tightly textured hair BECOME A DAMN SIN?! Some of all are so PATHETICALLY BRAINWASHED it is QUITE SAD. As a GROUP we don't grow STRAIGHT EUROPEAN hair. We JUST DON'T. I don't care HOW mixed up we are. BEY and her mama are LIGHT SKINNED but will NEVER, EVER have STRAIGHT EUROPEAN hair. Even Mariah who is 75% BLACK doesn't have STRAIGHT EUROPEAN hair. If you can recall from the early 90s she has wavvy curly hair.
Serious ask yourselves. HAVE YOU EVER MET a BLACK or AFRICAN person with STRAIGHT hair?!
Similarly you aren't going to FIND a WHITE ANGLO-SAXon person with hair like ours (unless they are of Jewish descent and we all know the original Jews wereBlack jews) But Anglo-Saxon person with nappy curly tightly coiled hair, NO. Some of yall need to quit.
The Byron Lars doll are pretty, and pretty damn expensive. She just didn't look them up. It was easy for me. This was my first time seeing them. Some are a little weird, be it the fashion or the hair. They are over the top, fashion show type dolls. I would love to buy one. Some are really gorgeous though.
I know Angelina wants positive image reinforments for Zahara but if she wants that she should probably adopt another African/Ethiopian girl...
Every last one of her children has a partner in crime or sibling that looks like them except for Zahara.
Zahara is the one that needs a sibling that looks like her the MOST because her skin is so obviously different from the rest of her family's.
If they dont adopt another African child then she will most DEFINATELY have an image complex!
@abbitchie
I'm not sure if your comment was directed towards what I wrote earlier but if so, no one including myself stated Ethiopia is not on the continent of Africa. Nor did we display any lack of pride for the continent of Africa. SMH All people describe themselves by their nation of birth and/or citizenship and not the continent that nation happens to be in;INCLUDING CONTINENTAL AFRICANS. LOL. My God, I can't understand how some of you black people can't figure this out. Obviously as Black people we are ALL of African descendant, white people are technically as well if you want to go back far enough. The point some of us were making is that by generalizing the continent ,western media is showing DISRESPECT for the national identities and sovereignty of the existing independent African countries. Again,FOR THE LAST TIME,an American will not refer to him or herself as a North American but simply as an American. Nobody going to Mexico specifically for a holiday would say I'm going to Central or South America, they would say I'm going to Mexico. Get it ? I heard a friend of my nephew ask a teacher in his school, who recently returned from a "good will" trip to Africa,"where in Africa did she go ?" The silly WHITE WOMAN simply replied," AFRICA ! " The boy,who is eleven then asked again," BUT WHERE IN AFRICA ?". Again this either silly or evil white woman replied with anger, "AFRICA!!" Finally the boy gave up and started to walk away but said while turning away ," oh ..ok..because my father is from Ghana." Then all of sudden this so called teacher, who cares so much about Africa called him back and started asking a whole bunch a questions about his father. FRAUD !! These white people know damn good and well what they're up to. They ain't naive.
You should check out the Hard Rock Cafe 2007 barbie. I mean she is GORGEOUS!! The curly fro, a little light. I like it. They all have light color eyes, which may b a problem for some. But I like most of the dolls except the black diva doll, with the blonde hair. Some dolls even had wigs, I was in tears laughing. I guess they were performers!

Oh please if I had her money I'd be doing just what OPRAH DID. Building schools and helping to foster fair trade agreements. Sorry but some of us Black folks are just trying to get by in case you haven't heard. However if I did have their financial resources, I wouldn't be steeling babies from their families like Madonna or adopting one child out of millions like Angelina. How does that help the people withing the various countries of Africa that may need help ? Oh and btw have you seen the balance sheet for that "NON PROFIT" organization of hers recently? How much of the administrative cost of the organization went towards buying those hand bags her Zahara are sporting ? Oprah used her own money to build a school for girls that may last decades after she herself is dead and gone. She didn't take any charitable donations from the U.N. or other various entities. Angelina is no saint honey. Save it !

Just what are you doing for the problems with poverty and hardship ? WHile you sit in Judgment of Angelina what small role do you play? Even if you have limited resources there is somthing that you can do. Standing in judment of her for having adopting 3 children from impoverish areas of the world is not productive, that's for sure. SHe is not able to save the world, she is just simply doing her part. Now do you part. Sorry but your posts about her was just came off a bit judgmental.

STANDING OVATION! It is sad that 400 years of europeans falsifying our consciousness has lead us thinking our natural hair is somehow un-natural, even if folks dont say this, it is unconsciously internalized, so this is why some black folks will get almost offended when you say they have kinky hair, as if most of us were born with european type hair. Well good because it was meant to be. I'm sorry as well, that I don't automatically kiss the feet of some woman who adopts a child from a foreign country without asking questions. Again I applaud Oprah Winfrey's humanitarian works more because she used her own private funding to build something that has long lasting ramifications for the young ladies in South Africa. Again, taking one child out of millions away from their homeland and complaining about there being a lack of cultural toys in her new country of residence to suit her is silly. Oprah is a thousands times wiser then A. Jolie. Wow lol...can you Angelina Jolie sycophants bring yourselves to admit that? Sickening !
fanfare, asuperiormind must be damn jen aniston, she's hating like angie stole her man. Both oprah and angelina are doing great. period. most people hate, talk garbage all day long and blah blah but not helping their own community or society at all. Angelina or Oprah dont have to do jack but guess what? their great hearts have taken them to make the world a better place. Both women rock, so all the bs walk.
Boy if I was Angelina I would have Zahara in a hair salon every week. If she don't take better care of her hair it will fall out. My hair is not that good but thank the lord my four year old daughter have that nice straight Indian hair pretty much like Chilli's from TLC she will never need a perm.
Soft Sheen- Carson's Baby Love Moisturizing hairdress lotion is all I use in her hair.
I have a curly-haired Black doll from Barbie. Her name was Nichelle, and I guess she's discontinued now, but I got her when I was like 9 or 10. She was part of this new line of Barbie dolls, before MyScene, that was supposed to be modern, I guess... and I loved her, because I thought she looked like Scary Spice.
I'm sure Angelina Jolie could find Nichelle if she searched hard enough. Matter fact, if I can still find mine, I'd give it to Zahara.
So Angelina let me give you a little advice:
1)You are Angelina Jolie and your husband is Brad Pitt get Lil Zahara a customized ZAHARA BARBIE!!!
2)Disney is coming out with an African American Princess in Spring of 2009..google people. She has kinky/curly hair and she is GORGEOUS!!
3)Angelina what I want you to do is get some TCB products (not relaxer) and comb little Z's hair or hire somebody to do it if you cant and then she won't want straight hair like Mommy's I mean you always got her out and about looking crazy...shoot i'd want straight hair too!!
HAPPY FRIDAY PEOPLE
LMAO And question !! Why has there always been a puzzle about this child's hair with Brad and Angie? I went to school with an adopted girl from Kenya raised by white parents. The girl had a natural all the way through high school. It was always well shaped and maintained BUT NATURAL. Although some BLACK girls would comment ,she never relaxed her hair.Obviously her, the white parents and her siblings, who lived in Kenya had no issues. From day one Brad had issues and Angie is always confuse blah blah blah. B!TCH PLEASE ! I honestly think they are creating this drama on purpose, just to do as white people love to do;create confusion. In my opinion,Zahara should have know identity issues at least as far as her looks are concerned because she's got that other white daughter beat by a mile, in the looks department.
@ SUPERIOR MIND.... Again I applaud Oprah Winfrey's humanitarian works more because she used her own private funding to build something *********** BOTH WOMEN ARE DOING GREAT HUMANITARIAN WORKS..SO IT COMES OFF RACIST AND UNFAIR FOR YOU TO PLACE OPRAH ON A PEDASTAL FOR HER CONTRIBUTION YET GIVE ANGELINA ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIT FOR HER EFFORTS AT ALL? AGAIN..WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO CONTRIBUTE? IT SEEMS TO ME THAT TAKING A CHILD INTO YOUR HOME AND INTO YOUR PERSONAL SPACE INVOLVES A HELL OF A LOT OF PRIVATE FUNDING, DON'T YOU THINK? SHE ACTUALLY IS DOING WHAT OPRAH IS DOING AND MORE!!SHE TAKES IT A STEP FURTHER.SHE TOO IS PROVIDING A QUALITY EDUCATION ALONG WITH A LOVING HOME. IT IS NOT ABOUT WHO IS WISER, IT'S ABOUT A RESOLUTION TO THE GROWING PROBLEM IN THAT COUNTRY. THEY BOTH ARE DOING THEIR PART...YET YOU KNOCK THE WHITE WOMEN AND PRAISE THE BLACK WOMEN. HOW? YOU ADMIT TO BEING JUDGEMENTAL AND THUS YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE ILLS OF THIS WORLD. WHAT A SAD SOUL YOU LIVE WITH...SO DON'T JUDGE ANGELINA.
@ASuperiorMind- Angelina and Brad cant save the entire planet! Give her some credit! A prime example of a silly argument. Adopting an African child gets major PRESS but it's not the only way to give back to our community. Many famous celebs and athletes have set up organizations to give back to our communities. They're all not out parading children around like hand bags however. I have always liked her, but now she seems so fake! I wonder does she refer to herself as American- or white?

If Somebody saves ONE CHILD in this morally challenged world I applaud them. Who else is adopting our children? Surely its not our own. I don’t care if she doesn’t build a building from here to Mars, the point is that she has taken a child in and raising her as her own. What is wrong with that? How are you contributing to parentless children? Have you adopted one lately? Why do people continue to be so judgemental and think that there is always something negative behind something people do based solely on the fact that they have money in the bank? SHE DARN NEAR HAS A SCHOOL HER DAM SELF WITH ALL THE KIDS SHE HAS ADOPTED AND/OR INTENDS TO ADOPT. BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS, SHE IS PROVIDING BOTH QUALITY EDUCATION AS WELL AS A LIFE TIME OF FINANCIAL STABILITY, SECURITY AND DIVERSE CULTURE TO THES KIDS. AGAIN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING OTHER THAN TYPING? NO ONE IS TAKING AWAY FROM OPRAH AND WHAT SHE HAD DONE...YET YOU ARE TAKING AWAY FROM ANGELINA? WHY IS THAT..AS PRINCESS ZAHARA STATED..PERHAPS YOU ARE JENNIFER ANNISTON !? LMAO! BE FAIR!
First and foremost MTO...THERE IS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PRINCESS ADOPTED...ADOPTED BEING THE KEY WORD through Walt Disney. Secondly, the way the title of this post looks, it makes you wanna say, "Can somebody slap this ignorant woman for saying this OUTLOUD?"
But when you read it, you realize MTO just TWISTIN up another story. S H I T they do best.
@fanfare
Hmmmm. Ok ! I admit it, I'm really Jennifer Anniston. You got me ! Now that that's cleared up,I hope Angelina's three adopted children will grow up to have wonderful productive lives. If all works out well, I also hope the thousands of young ladies that walk through the doors of the Oprah Winfrey school, for the NEXT ONE HUNDRED years, will also have great productive lives that will in turn impact other THOUSANDS of South Africans for generations to come. Obviously I can talk about what ever little charity work I do but seeing how you look down your nose at Oprah's great deeds, I'm sure my little contributions would be meaningless to you. Massa Jolie is your Queen,so go on and kiss her ass and feet. Just don't forget to brush your teeth when you're done.

GuessJeans @ Some of yall COONS saying "what, she think all BLACK folks got kinky, curly hair": HELLO!
---------------------------------- Damn girl, you are bringin' it today...Good comment...
There are lots of African Barbie dolls. Do a google search Angie? You'll find Barbie's with braids and African attier. Good grief. It ain't that damn hard nowadays.

Stop trying to become a humanitarian to gain FORGIVENESS for stealing another woman's HUSBAND!!! You are still a TRAMP!!!
When people overly use their SEX appeal and body to get ahead...they feel guilty later in life for the people they hurt by being selfish and and slutty...so then they try to become Mother Theresa and save the World through acts of human kindness...never fully adressing their wrongs but still seeking ATTENTION for their GOOD DEEDS. (TRUST ME-We will see this "good samaritan" behavior in a TRAMPY singer we all know and love in a few more years)
She hasn't learned anything nor do she TRULY feel sorry for the home she BROKE up. The Humanitarian Act is so that people will forget her wrongs and in the end STILL MAKE IT ALL ABOUT HER!!! She is a phoney just like the phony Singer we are going to see pull this same "good samaritan" sh!t in a few years!! DONT FALL FOR IT PEOPLE!!!!
@asuperiormind First I have no reason to come in and change my name. Any and everything that I say will be known as that I said it. Next, the reason in the African/Ethiopian thing, is why go through trying to dissect the name when it is the same thing. All of the people who I have met have always stated that they are African, then if you ask where they are from, then they will say the specific country. But I do get your point though.
you know it's funny everytime I hear someone say reverse racism because someone is telling the truth, this is not a direct comment to any post, but you don't call someone a reverse robber if someone breaks in your house and steals and you catch them and get your stuff back. Racism constitutes power and influence at the highest levels and unfourtunately so-called african americans (Blacks) have none.
ST[SPAM]OOOPpppppp! This homewrecker will say and do anything to shed a positive lite on her manstealing homewrecking hohoppin ARSE she makes me sick.... I use to like Angie but after she pulled that Brad trick and lied about it and then get on tv all bold and asking for a azz whuppin way bragging about how she hooked up with somebody else husband and she wants to jump on the save the world bandwagon and adopt Black Babies like its a collection or some [EXPLETIVE] I fell sorry for Z all she see is White ppl and nobody that looks like her and she probably wondering why she different and [EXPLETIVE] while Angie adopting her to create some type of positive image for herself. with all that damn money she got why dont she shut the fuk up and commission a damn African American Barbie with curly hair? She just saying some [EXPLETIVE] she know Black ppl will get all moved by and she can look like miss dogoody and we are ALL Equal BullllSHITTTT I can't stand that hobag!
that board is so stupid and simple as he11.all white, black and latina barbie dolls got straight long hair.since her daughter look like a pickynanny(no offensive 2 the black folks),she should go 2 compton or creshaw or south central or watts and go 2 any black beauty salon and ask them 2 braid her hair every 1-2 weeks and put the grease on her scalp so she can grow her own hair.btw,im from nyc,not california.if she wanna buy african dolls 4 her daugher, she should go 2 the american girl doll store and buy the african doll 4 her or FAO schwartz or toys r us.that bytch is full of shyt.white people can be so dumb sometimes. smh
GUESSJEANS you spoke the truth about heritage, I can remember taking Africana Studies classes a feeling really sad about learning how much of our culture and history has been erased. As a Black American its like being lost not being able to really be anchored and identify. We all know that Black come from Africa but to not be able to trace your roots to its origin is sad. White ppl can tell you that they are Irish and German or Polish or this and that..For all I know I could be Morrocan, Nigerian, Ethiopian I don't know WTH my roots really are all I know is African and it makes me sad its true at least Z can go back to where she came from and learn something about her heritage....BUT I don't agree that Angie is doing a good job raising I think there should have been another Black child there so Z can have someone that looks like herself to relate to....
Kids do not view Barbie dolls by hair and race until adults put emphasis on them. How many 2-3 year olds tell their parents I want the black doll, I want the white doll or the doll wit kinky or straight hair?! Kids don't care about stuff like that until their minds become corrupted by their family & society. Angelina should let her daughter pick out whateva doll she want and then when she get old enough to experience race issues, then she should just start teaching her about her heritage. But now is not the time. Damn she's just an innocent baby right now!
good for angie for promoting self love to her child.
and you know what?? now that i think about it, even tho i had tons of barbies when i was a kid, i REFUSE to buy my future daughter(s) a barbie if they keep making the black ones the way they do. black barbies are just brown versions of the white ones, no difference on anything else. they both have the same features, body types, hair, etc. when i was younger, i had 1 dark skin barbie who was darker than the generic brown and they had the nerve to give her hot pink lipstick!!! and then i had one biracial (yes! biracial, b/c that's how she was described on the box) soultrain barbie. she was light skin, sandy colored, wavy hair. but other than that, the rest of my dolls were a mixture of generic brown and white.
unlike white folks, black ppl come in a variety of shades and barbie should accomadate (sp?) them all! i'm light skin myself, i identified myself with the brown dolls b/c they were blk. but i woulda loved to have a "lightskin/high yella" barbie myself.
and when you think about white parents and their lil girls...i have yet to see white girls playing with black dolls!!! but go into any black household and the lil girls got more than 1 white doll, i bet you! totally unfair.
and a lil off topic, when i used to look in the big jc penny book of toys that came out every year, i HATED seeing the white dolls featured and then they put the blk and hispanic versions in a lil box to show they had options!! sup with that??? how come the blk dolls can't be the main feature??? i dunno...just something that irked me, lol.

If your scroll up and read my earliar post today..this is what i was trying to convey and i got shot down! you have summed it up. I have a 7 year old and this is pretty much what I have been trying to say. my daughter could care less! Now if i put emphasis on it...which i did one time ..at the urging of a friend..she made me feel stupid. she told me " it doesn't matter if she's black or white, i just want to comb her hair".it's a freaking toy to them!..sigh. enough said.
@ Dreayonn
that's the mistake many adults make: not realizing how smart kids are @ a young age. the time to teach that baby self love is NOW!! while her mind is still like a sponge, ready to absorb everything. and its best to make sure she's absorbing positive self love b/c if you let the negativity get in and THEN try to teach her self love @ an older age, it'll be more difficult.
she's not stupid, she can compare herself to other people and things. you might think a lil blk girl playing with white dolls @ that age won't know any better about it, but she does. she may not be able to verbalize the differences between her and that doll, but she does know. my lil cousin, who is brown skin, came up to me @ the age of 4 and asked me why i was lighter than her. she was observing and comparing and saw a difference. so yea, teach them babies now b4 the society even has a chance to corrupt them. b/c now, my cousin is a lil older (11 yo) w/the prettiest complexion i've EVER seen and she doesn't feel good about being brown skin b/c negativity from some color-struck family members have set in. i tell her every chance i get how beautiful her skin complexion is. rather she believes it for herself or not is yet to be seen, but won't stop me from reminding her.
Kids may not view a Barbie as a "race," but kids do pick up on what media/marketing companies portray as attractive. If kids look at Disney cartoons, music videos, dolls, television shows etc, and see "beautiful" people that don't look like them, they will start to develop complex issues and feel like they need to change themselves.
Maybe she and Brad can start their own toy manufacturing company to bring more racially/ethnically diverse dolls to the masses
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Oh great dolls before jobs and food. That's smart. Someone above mentioned the great work Oprah has done and got slammed. We Black folks have a long way to go to get our minds together. The doll thing has apparently screwed up a lot of Black females. I guess that's why when guys like Jay-Z and Kenye grow their hair some sisters call it peasy and give it a thumbs down. Interesting. Personally I don't give a damn about a confused insecure female and I don't give a damn about frauds like Angelina Jolie and Madonna. The doll thing is silly on could be very easily resolved, if Holie really serious about addressing the issue.
stormzoe Flag post Hey Gems.... I agree that Angelina was wrong for helping to break up Brad and Jennifer Anniston's marriage. However, I am a big proponent of adoption, in particular the adoption of minority children. I plan to adopt within the next few years. I am praying that her heart is in the right place with these kids. Damn, that Brad is fine. I'd love to adopt some kids with him.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Oh great another clueless female who wants to adopt. Sorry little girl but Brad Pitts taken. Why not start thinking like a grown woman and start looking for a more realistic mate to raise a child with.
It's not only insecure females, many young Black males have image issues too. Without going into specifics; I have seen image issues with the children who I work with, and the ones who are blood relatives. Kids pick up on this stuff early. I read a book to 5 and 6 year olds about loving the skin that you are born with. Giggles and put-downs occurred when dark skin children were displayed. Parents need to instill self-esteem in their children. I applaud Angelina for doing what many of us fail to do.
@ lefteee...3
these image issues that these children aledgedly have are based on and stem from parenting. i have a 7 year old and have never had this problem with race or color. As Dreyonn said in his posts..lf you introduce racism and color issues to a child , they will instill what they hear and see. if the white mother teaches that color is a pigment and does not matter and to love everyone, then the child will be openminded. but if that white parent has taught and displayed racism, by using racist remarks around the child and/or have talked negatively or fearful about blacks, the child's outview will be form. It is shaped by the parents and their surroundings. I was raised to believe that i was just as good as the next person, whether they were black or white.
I hear you but don't agree. I work with children (mainly those of color) and see their daily struggles with self-image. I also have a child (who is light-skinned with hazel eyes) and I see these "issues" that occur with our people almost on a daily basis. Parenting is important, but the media also has a huge influnce on ones perspective. I have a nephew who is a smart beautiful brown skinned child, who recently woke up and said he wants white skin. In my heart I know that this didn't come from parenting. Because I work with "our" children I hear and see things that most do not, and at an early age. I am going to "try" and leave it at that. Dolls may seem like a superficial topic, but it is much deeper.
I have a nephew who is a smart beautiful brown skinned child, who recently woke up and said he wants white skin. In my heart I know that this didn't come from parenting ******************* interesting, my child said the same thing . about 3 years ago. she was 4 back then. i came to discover after talking with her that her best friend at school was white and that she wanted to be like her. also, at the time she and one other child were the only blacks in the class. she had many concerns during that time. she was just confused. she wanted to know why she was different. it's not a race thing. they don't know. she asked me one time why she was lighter than me.Basically, being at a predominantly white school was challenging. i got to the bottom of it though by using my parenting skills and by remaining positive. the problem is not every parent parents the same way. i told her that GOd gave everyone a different pigment and that her friends pigment is different from hers because of her race. but that they both were little girls and were equal. she is not better than you , nor you than her. parents showing and displaying the opposite and inciting race and racism only confuses the child. ...because they don't know . how we blow it up or difuse it..determines the outcome. that is just my take on it.
@FendiFiend
Ummm ...yeah....ok ,let's see now. Where do I begin with something like you? First of all, your rant about the country being in a recession and your definition of what constitutes an economic recession in this country was unnecessary, especially since your definition of the term was WRONG. Regardless of good times or bad ,in this country for a so called champion of great causes to use her platform to discuss barbie dolls is asinine. That was the mine point of what I wrote regarding your comments. We as Black people have a lot more to worry about then you stupid insecure females and your trivial hair issues. Now for the record the majority of economist consider an economic recession to be two consecutive quarters of falling real gross national product ( GNP). Where the hell you got your definition from is beyond me. ROTFLMAO. You sadly are just another loud mouth female, who talks more then she listens. Now get out and stay out !
@ chosen one...
Maria 121 is not correct! aNGELINA ADOPTED ZAHARA. THE MOTHER ABANDONED THE CHILD. I REMEMB ER READING THAT IN PEOPLE MAG..BUT ANYWAY..I GOOGLED IT TO BE CERTAIN...HERE IS AN EXECERPT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT THE MOTHER SAID..
She(ZAHARA'S MOTHER) left the child in the care of her mother, who reportedly searched for her for several months before finally presuming her dead and putting the baby up for adoption.
Dawit, the birth mother, for her part, stresses how glad she is the tot is living with a movie star, a point she emphasizes by kissing a picture of Jolie....
"This is to show I have no ill feelings towards her," she said. "I think my daughter is a very fortunate human being to be adopted by a world-famous lady. I wish them both all the success they deserve."

research the facts dear. Hillary lost. my vote for her is null and void. Obviously you were stalking me and are referring to yesterday's thread in which i mentioned voting for her in the primaries as did many people..both black and white. does it matter? My vote for Obama helped him get in office, so your comments have little relevance. Again, Hillary lost. As far as the stupid mother comment attack goes..i will assume that you are referring to your mother. she raised you, i had nothing to do with your outcome. Is there a mirror near you?
fire4u
Maria 121 is just fine chick. The bottom line is that the mother is still alive. Ok presuming that the translation written by the reporter his truly accurate, why not have the mother at least visit the child in the states every now an then or even bring over another relative to act as a nanny for the child. Holie acting concerned about the child developing her own self identity and making a cultural connection with her heritage is a sham.
ChosenOne flagpost
@Maria121
Wow. I thought Holie adopted her from an agency over there. I had no idea she knows the actual mother. That makes this whole situation extra suspicious. Like you said, simply help sponsor the family and keep them intact. Or at least bring the mother over her for visits once in a while. **********************8 LMAO!!!!!!Chosen One's mother is stupid. she did not teach him to research the facts prior to posting idiotic statements!
chosen one..admit you are wrong. do your homework before passing judgement on me, and on the Ms Jolie. you clearly are uninformed and a follower. we need more black strong leaders...not followers.this woman abandoned the child. why bring her over here to visit. the women clearly is not interested in the child and per her statement made it clear that she is happy that she is in a nice home. Please note that Brad and Angelina are going to allow the child to be aware of her heritage and culture. she will return to her homeland for visits..as stated. you're the sham. please remove Barack's picture from your avatar. you disgrace his good name.
Sorry ,I normally spend my time researching topics of more substance. Now get out and stay out !! ************* okay, now the topic has no substance. it deals with and has covered race, ethnicity, culture, child rearing, racism, adoption, black and white relations and heritage . I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU ..AND HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXCHANGE WITH YOU . SMDH WHAT A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wy are people picking out her words so much? Ethiopia is in Africa, she said Africa, so what? When someone is from the states they say they are American, then they say exactly what state they come from. Some of you are just mad that Angelina is White and her daughter is Black. This is proof that any person of any color can be racist because I see it a lot here, and it's truly embarassing. Not all White people are evil, trust me because if it weren't for a good percent of them we wouldn't have a Black president elect right now. It's a bit off topic but you know it's the truth.
Look at their purses.. Too cute. Angelina is bein a better mother than many other parents. She is actually giving her child the oppurtunity to learn about every culture and religion. Unlike so many parents and people who try to force and brainwash their children into thinking and believing as they do. Much respect to Angelina.
I have an African Barbie with the authentic garb, short curly hair, everything. Paid a pretty penny for it -- it was where the fantasy/specialty Barbies are in the store. Got it as a collector's item. Hmmm. . . Mattel thinks non-whites are fantasy/specialty?
Anywho, Angie get at me because we can deal!
SHE SHOULD BE WORRIED MORE ABOUT TEACHING HER ABOUT HER COUNTRY AND HER HERITAGE..HAIR IS A PART OF THAT BUT NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART BY FAR.....THE HAIR IS REALLY NOT A BIG DEAL....I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH AFRICANS WHO HAD NATURALLY STRAIGHT HAIR. HAIR DOESN'T MAKE YOU BLACK. AND FRANKLY I DON'T SEE THE BIG DEAL. LONG AS MY DAUGHTER GETS TO SEE A DOLL WITH BLACK SKIN, IM HAPPY.
I BUY BARBIES THAT LOOK LIKE MY DAUGHTER, WITH THE SAME SKINTONE AS HER..SO SHE CAN APPRECIATE HERSELF AND DEVELOP SELF LOVE. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE BARBIE HAS STRAIGHTENED HAIR, BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER'S HAIR IS STRAIGTENED. WHAT BLACK PEOPLE KEEP REFUSING TO GRASP IS NO MATTER HOW MUCH RELAXER YOU PUT IN YOUR HAIR, IT'S STILL GONNA BE A LITTLE NAPPY!!!! AINT NO RELAXER IN THE WORLD CAN GIVE YOU THE TEXTURE OF A CAUCASIAN PERSON. ONLY THING A RELAXER DOES IS MAKES IT MORE MANAGEABLE AND GIVES IT THE ABILITY TO BE STYLED AND COMBED..HAIR THAT IS COMPLETELY NAPPY DOESN'T MAKE YOU ANY MORE BLACK, NOR DOES HAIR THAT IS STRAIGHTENED MAKE YOU WHITE OR LESS BLACK....HAHAHHAHA...THE THINGS MY RACE WORRIES ABOUT....*SHAKES HEAD*
AWWW good job angie! she is going to raise her beutiful sahara right bcuz she is trying to teach her what natural beuty is and not what straightening perm and chemicles do 2 hair to make our hair look like beyonce or white folks, this is what black mothers need to teach there daughters before they start looking like artificial barbies. WE NEED TO BE OUR OWN RACE AND THAT IS TRUE BEUTY!
1. ZAHARA IS NOT HIV+ OR GOT AIDS, ANOTHER TABLOIT(STAR MAG BS TO SELL A COVER), ANGIE EVEN TALKED ABOUT IT WHILE PROMOTING BEWOLF.
2. NOTHING WRONG WITH HER LEGS, SHE'S JUST A LIL BOWLEGGED AND IT HAS TO DO WITH THE BAD NUTRITION SHE WAS GETTING, ANGIE HAD TO PUT HER FOR 2 WEEKS IN A HOSPITAL AFTER ADOPTING HER, THAT'S HOW IN BAD SHAPE THE LIL GIRL WAS, SHE WOULD HAVE BEING EVEN MAYBE DEAD BY NOW IF NOT ADOPTED. AND SHE CAN WALK, PLENTY PICS OF HER WALKING/RUNNING, SHE'S ONLY CARRIED WHEN THE CRAZY PAPARRAZZI ARE AROUND.
3. ANGIE DIDN'T STEAL ZAHARA, SHE WAS ADOPTED LEGALLY. ZAHARA WAS ALREADY LIVING IN THE ORPHANAGE FOR OVER A YEAR WHEN ADOPTED. AND THAT WOMAN CLAIMING SHE WAS THE MOTHER WAS ANOTHER STAR MAGAZINE BS, NEVER CONFIRMED BY A RELIABLE SOURCE.
FINALLY, ALL THIS HATING TOWARD ANGELINA IS ONLY CAUSE SHE'S A WHITE WOMAN. WE ALL CLAIM 'RACISM" FOR ABOUT ANYTHING BUT LOVE TO BE RACIST TOWARD OTHERS. I DON'T GIVE A DAMN IF SHE'S YELLOW OR RED, ALL I KNOW SHE'S PUTTING HER 2 CENT TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. WHAT MOST OF THE HATERS ARE DOING TO HELP? NOTHING BUT BEING NEGATIVE AND TALKING BS.
