: WASHINGTON - (AP) After six decades in which the venerable greenback never changed its look, the U.S. currency has undergone a slew of makeovers. The most amazing is yet to come.
A new security thread has been approved for the $100 bill, The Associated Press has learned, and the change will cause double-takes.
The new look is part of an effort to thwart counterfeiters who are armed with ever-more sophisticated computers, scanners and color copiers. The C-note, with features the likeness of Benjamin Franklin, is the most frequent target of counterfeiters operating outside the United States.
The operation of the new security thread looks like something straight out of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This magic, however, relies on innovations produced from decades of development.
It combines micro-printing with tiny lenses — 650,000 for a single $100 bill. The lenses magnify the micro-printing in a truly remarkable way.
Move the bill side to side and the image appears to move up and down. Move the bill up and down and the image appears to move from side to side.
"It is a really complex optical structure on a microscopic scale. It makes for a very compelling high security device," said Douglas Crane, a vice president at Crane & Co. The Dalton, Mass-based company has a $46 million contract to produce the new security threads.
The redesign of the $100 is about one-third of the way complete. The bill is expected to go into circulation late next year.

I have always known that they work together but, they have some people fooled thinking that it is run by the government because of their name. They work with the government but, the federal reserve is still a 100% private owned bank. Of course there will be a way to copy this money eventually and you're right they are trying to head towards no cash in the future. I was saying that this new bill is just another way for them to protect their investment right now. The national ID card takes effect in march of next year and all government workers and military have already converted over to this card with the chip containing all our information. You're preaching to the choir but, I wonder if anyone else will wake up before they give us all the same chip to use for money and information that is included in all passports made after 06. It's not even a theory, all newer passports have a tracking chip in them for safety purposes.

This new 100 dollar bill is secured with 3-D ribbon. And it said to be a challenge for the government to go ahead of counterfeiters. I fully understand the need to continuously change our money with the technology counterfeiters have, but it seems a bit redundant. My question I have is how does the government plan on stopping the circulation of the $100 bills already out there? There's nevertheless $100 bills passing through my hands from 4 designs ago, so what is to stop the <a title="New 100 dollar bill debuts to help fight counterfeit rings" href="[link to external website] from continuing to make the older version anyway, at least until they determine how to make the new one. With all of the fake hundreds they can make, they have plenty to finance their research for making the new ones.
