The problem with Rihanna is she has an issue with black men. Most black women that prefer to date white men have no or a poor relationship with their father. Rihanna stated her father was a drug addict in Barbados, so she sees black men in an inferior light, irregardless of Jay-Z's influence in her life. Jay-Z can't erase those scars of her youth. 99% of the black women I meet that chase after white men, have dysfunctional relationships with their fathers. Black women that have stand up black men as fathers; true brothas that held the family down, do not run to every white man they see. That is why any women I start dating with possible potential, I will eventually ask her about her father. If she has a negative view of him, I know her image of black men is most likely the same, unless she had a really good black role model in his absence like a stepdad, uncle, or grandfather.
Rihanna is free to date who she wants, but as she gets older and her career may fizzle a little, she may come to see the truth. Black people for all of our faults and hateration, we do stand behind our celebrities under fire. This is something Janet Jackson had to learn the hard way and she looks happier than ever. On the other hand, her brother Michael and that dumbazz O.J Simpson seemed to ignore the phone, when their negro wake call came. Janet never used to date black men, probably seeming from her resentment of her father, Joe Jackson's treatment of her siblings and mother. However, sleeping with the enemy isn't the solution either. Look how the white media and "Mr. Blue-Eyed Soul" Justin Timberlake threw her under the bus after the Super Bowl fiasco. I will never support Justin Timerberlake after that, but most blacks have racially amnesia or just don't care to begin with. Rihanna may eventually learn the hard way, that being an attractive, famous, light skinned, green eyed black woman, who dates white men, won't insulate her from the specter of racial animous. It just might postpone or dilute it. |

But she has dated black guys in the past and for the most part. So, if she's dating a couple white guys this year, maybe it's just about who's doing the asking. Rihanna is not American, she's from Barbados. So, how she deals with her identity as a black woman is not going to be the same as an American black woman. I think her Bajan roots make her a little different in terms of how she sings and presents herself, and sometimes people just hate on her cause they forget she isn't American. HEr dating a white guy may not mean the same thing to her consequently-she's 19. At 19, if a cute, nice guy asked me out, I'd say yes. I wouldn't be thinking of all the political implications of dating someone of a different color-I'd just want to have fun. She works harder than most of us I bet-she deserves to enjoy herself at times. Going to a club with a white guy or going out to dinner with a white guy shouldn't be treated as anything more than that. |

I grew up in Barbados like Rihanna, (quite a few years ago), but we went to school with all different races, and dated one another without any issues. American society has such a BIG issue with inter-racial dating, and I can understand why, but why should somebody who is not American adhere to your limited views of dating and living?
My friends and I were talking and we realize that this issue only became apparent when we moved here. It's crazy, all the over-analyzing of her daddy issues and home-life, it's not as deep as all that. She's just not as jaded and cynical as the rest of you. My father is my absolute best friend and he is the most positive influence in my life besides God and my fiance. I see past skin color. I've dated people of different races and it just so happens that the love of my life is white.
My fiance and my father get along so well that I once had to break up their 5 hour conversation because it was 2am and we had to leave. I mean, my father was the one who taught me to have an open-mind!
