Their whole crew had the t-shirts and stuff on too, not just Nas and Kelis.
With the way we use the word soooo frequently in every day language, I can't understand why just because he's bringing it to the forefront, why it's such a "big deal" with us now. That's what I fail to understand. We use that word every other sentence, and now since he's drawing attention to it, now it's a problem? What's the difference in buying an album and hearing the word in every other bar and buying an album with the word on the cover? What's the difference?
Nas has a stable history of trying to direct our community(I Know I can, etc.) and I think with this, whether we agree or not, he does have good intentions. He's not just some ignorant rapper, yall sleeeeep!!! In fact, he's one of the GREATEST lyricist of our time. And really, SOMEONE needs to change the direction of this so called hip-hop, cause it is dead...media wise anyway. No lyrical content whatsoever. So I am behind Nas aaaaall the way. Can't wait for the album.
I wish we could take the beats away from some of this bullsh*t on the airwaves that we support so heavy and listen to what these "artists" are saying, then come back and try and rank someone like Nas...guarantee he'll be on top. Promise. |

On any given day, "ni$$a" is used routinely on this website as well as other popular websites. People are so damn phony because they try to act like they are SOOO offended by the word and yet we say it all the time. I'm gon keep it real...I don't want anyone outside of my race calling me that but within my own race...it really ain't a problem for me. I hear the stories of how people "died" to keep others from calling us "ni$$gas" and I respect that but I also think that the usage of the word these days within our race is often used as a term of endearment. i.e. "Wat up, Ni$$a", or "I love that Ni$$g"! Black people say it to each other all the time. I think that it shows that we have moved passed the day where saying the word was "taboo". Again, this is a word that is acceptable to me only if it is being used within my race and by my race. Controversial? I know but I'm being honest! |

I want to pose a question to all my Black people. If you could change your race would you and if so then why and which race, if not then why would you stay Black? Me I would stay Black even though I sometimes am ashamed of what my own folks say and do. But I would stay Black because I am proud to be a member of a strong race who in spite of many obstacles has continued to preservere. But if I was to change it would be Japanese. They are very proud, cultured, focused and smart. |

I understand everyone's comments on this, pro and con, but I can't bring myself to support Nas on this. I get what he's doing, he's not using the word for the sake of the being controversial, once again Nas is trying to open minds by getting our attention, much like when he tried to have the crucifix in the "you can hate me now" video or his stunts at Summer Jam.
Much like 08mynewwish says, some black folks would love a "trap or die" type title instead of this because it makes them feel safe for some odd reason.
I'm a Nas fan, no doubt, he murdered Joe Camel on Ether despite what the groupies say, but as a black man who doesn't want ANY person using that word (no chit, I let it be known that no person, black or white, can use that word when speaking to me), I can't ride with Nas over this.

It's one thing to say it in a rhyme or when you're talking to your friends, etc. but to wear it on your shirt like a fashion statement...is not cool. If a white person just starts saying the N word like NAS in his advertising, we'd call them racist. If it's not cool for everyone to use - we should not wear it like a name tag and then be upset when the bigots use it. It's an insider word - and if you ain't an insider you shouldn't use it, so let's not act like it's cool because NAS is (or used to be, depending on your point of view)... |

If you would actually take a moment and actually LISTEN to what Nas had to say, rather than just reading other people's comments and looking at his shirt, then you would see that he actually made VALID POINTS.
Let this be known right now, Nas is not some dumb ass motherfcker like Lil Wayne or Flo Rida, he's an intellectual rapper who makes you think and always has a reason behind his actions. Though some of you may think it was wrong and/or tacky of him to exploit this on such a stage like the Grammys, but I see no harm in him doing it. He said that people used the word to demean all people (not just blacks) and he's flipping it around to take power from the word and backed his argument.
And unlike 98% of the "rappers" these days, Nas always comes through with lyrics of superb imagery that also have substance.
Can't wait to hear his album when it drops later in the year.
And in case you haven't known, HIP HOP IS DEAD! Fck what you heard. |

INSTEAD SINCE HIP HOP HAS SO MUCH INFLUENCE HE SHOULD POINT PEOPLE TO DOCUMENTRIES SUCH AS ETHNIC NOTIONS AND THE ONE ABOUT COFFEE ( I THINK ITS CALLED BLACK GOLD) AND THEN COME WITH A MESSAGE. Ok while I do understand people not liking Nas' stance on this issue, when exactly did he become a whack rapper and last time I checked Hip Hop is Dead sold units AND was a great album. So where did Nas' career go to die?
I'm sorry if he doesn't make you dance or snap your fingers but there is a market for social-driven hip hop. Ever heard of Common? Talib Kweli? These guys, along with Nas have more talent in their pinkies than the Flo Ridas of the world.
So all of you not feeling what Nas is doing? Fine, but the knowledge-deficient finger-snappers who love that stripper music shouldn't try to use this issue as a forum to attack Nas.
Because we all know, whether you like it or not, Nas is a legend in this game, not a down-south one-hit wonder that will end up on the Surreal Life in 5 years. Let's not get things phucked up in here. |

Whoever, think Nas is intelligent is not very articulate themselves. He didnt come up with not one valid point in that whole interview. Thats the difference in hip hop now and then. Now: None of these rappers of today talk about any social issues because they dont know any. These modern day rappers have degrees in ignorance. Back in the day brothers like Chuck D, Rakim, KRSONE and Ice Cube used to mash on social issues and when you put a mic in front of them (interview) they had something beneficial to say. |

Brklyn, don't blame the South, blame the consumer.
They buy that bullchit. The public doesn't demand quality and that's why the landscape is such. As long as you market to dumbazzes and they buy it then why, as a business, would you stop?
Fact is, NOBODY is selling records anymore and the one thing I give the South credit for is making records for the CLUBS, people will buy records they can dance to nowadays because they are too STUPID to take in a message. As a public we have the attention span of a gnat, so steppin fetchit booty music like Flo Rida sells.
We only have ourselves to blame. |

Actually alot of ya'll don't even know what the real meaning of "[EXPLETIVE]" ya'll just took what yt said about it and ran with it. [EXPLETIVE], actually mean divine one or god. It's black His story month black folks. Star learing your true his story and not be ashamed of it.
Words of Af-Ra-Kam (African) origins that came from the original word, "N-G-R (PROUNOUNCED EN-JER)
N-g-r (Egyptian;pronounced en-jer) = God
N-t-y-r (Egypt; pronounced net-ger) = God, Devine
Negash (Ethiopia; ne-gash) = King
Negus (Ethiopia; ne-goos) = Emperor
Nkosi (Xhosa; en-kosi) = God
Ndaba (Zulu; en-daba) = Council/Officials,
Naga (East Indian, Nubian [Kushite] = People / Naga or Naacal (India, Mexico = Serpent King and/or Serpent Queen)
Nugarmarta (West African = People (See the writings of Ibn Buttata's journey to West Africa)
THE WORD "N-G-R" (EN-JER) AFTER IT WAS CORRUPTED BY THE EUROPEANS
Niger = (Latin or Black/African pronounced "ni-ger.")
Nero = Italian for Black
Negre = French for Black
Negro = Spanish for Black
The English called Blacks "Moor" or "Black-a-Moor" before they began using the word
"Negro" to refer to Blacks. The European kidnappers stated in the past that Blacks were found on the bank of the "Niger" river, which runs through the countries of Niger and Nigeria.
Niger-Congo language which has its roots in the Cameroon region of Africa. In fact, there are thousands of African words from Cameroon to Kenya that have both prefixes and suffixes that are identical to both Chinese and Japanese languages (see also African Presence in Early Asia, by Ivan Van Sertima; Transaction Publishers)
In the Case of "Ni-Han" which may mean "rising sun," there is also a sacred meaning that is found in the word "n-ger," or "ne-gro." Yet, the racist terms "nip," and "[EXPLETIVE]" or "jap," used by racists were and are being used without any understanding of their original meanings. Only hatred and envy comes out of the mouths of those who use racial epithets in their attempt to insult and denegrade others. However, it is up to us to study our history and make these racist words impotent, while at the same time, understanding their original meaning.
Connection with the prefix "ni" with sacred and life:
Ni'le = The Nile River, Life to the Egyptians
Ni-ger = River in West Africa
Niger = Nation in West Africa
Nigeria = Nation in West Africa
Nago = Racist term used by some SE Asians to refer to Black Melanesians of Africoid origins
Nago-Mina = African nationality in Nigeria
Naghual = Aztec word for Shaman or priest. The first Olmec Shamans in Mexico came from Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa (see "BLACK CIVILIZATIONS OF AMERICA" http://community.webtv.net/paulnubiaempire |

Like everyone else, I feel Nas is DEFINITELY one of the best and is da truth on the mic, as far as his opinion on the word I feel everyone who uses the word (black ppl that is) has there own reasoning and logic behind it, some are ignorant and some make since...His maade since to me, do I agree with him NO...Me, personally, I would honestly slap the ish out of anyone outside of the race saying it to my face. Like seeing the "white girl" in his camp(or whatever she was) wearing the shirt bothers me. Then again I'm from the south and I have very vivid memories as a young child hearing the word and it still to this day hurts thinking about those times...Do I use the word?...YES, am I offended hearing other black ppl using it?...No I have my own reasoning behind that... |

Ayo NAS, when i first heard the album title i knew exactly what it was going to be at that moment. Its funny how these dudes still don't understand. They are the ones who need this album the most. In my opinion there were only 3 rappers who ever could do this. the first is 2pac who already did it throughout his career but not dedicated to one album. The second is Icecube who already done it with Death Certificate and parts of Amerikka's most wanted. And the last is NAS. as i wait impatiently for this to come out i put up my black fist and salute you my dude!!! |

First props to whyumad and lovetolive - you two obviously got something from the interview that these others did not.
For real for real, the voting rights act is just that an act. Blacks ability to vote is not a law. It is an act that has to be periodically ratified. Meanwhile people born in other countries that become American right to vote IS law.
Also, if you travel outside this country and you are black no matter where you go you are likely to meet someone who will innocently enough call you ni66@ like its ok. So much for a term of endearment.
And its true John Lennon (a phucking Beatle) did have a song called "Woman is the N!663r of the World", Richard Pryor had "That N!663r's Crazy" and "Bi-centennial N!663r", NWA had "efil4zraggin", and CUbe had "The Wrong N!663r to FK With".
Don't be a n!663r - learn something. |

@spraggaswifey
Thanks for the kind words. I'm not really looking for everyone to agree with me either, it wouldn't be America if they did.
I have my opinions of the South and while they may not be popular ones, they are mine. When I speak I speak with facts as my basis, I don't make up sheet and I try to come informed.
I'm open-minded enough to know that the South, while corny musicwise, isn't really the problem, WE ARE THE PROBLEM because no record executive, no DJ, no hype man, is more powerful than the will of the people. If we as a people decide not to accept the Soulja Boys and Laffy Taffy negroes of the world then and only then will hip hop become respectable again. I even have more respect for the Black Eyed Peas because at the core of their music lies a RESPECT for the art form and forefathers of hip hop that does not reside down south.
Think about this: Why is that a rock band like Daughtry AND Bruce Springsteen can both sell records? It's because ROCK MUSIC fans both embrace the future while still loving the music of those past generations. Why don't we do that in hip hop? Even down south, if the Geto Boys were still around, they wouldn't sell records because we don't support our legends like other genres of music.
Look at Country: Carrie Underwood AND George Strait can both sell records.
R&B: Sade sold 3 million records after a 10 year hiatus and Chris Brown can do the same at age 17.
Hip Hop leaves talent behind to go to the next best thing. |

I sat here thinking if I should weigh in on this..being that im Asian.
I will say that to me it seems as tho he sold out the masses to sell records.
The reason I say this is because NAS has, Money, status and power that us common folk (Asian,black,white,whatever) dont have. He isnt subjected to the type of harm that that word causes the average person in the street.
He may be from your hood...but he can get up and leave whenever he wants, call a high priced attorney when he feels like he's been treated unfairly because of race,etc,etc.
The people who support his music dont really have the same options. He shouldve thought of the people who support him
what Sean combs did last week was amazing and sent a message that America will pay attention to....most people looked at his shirt and shook thier collective heads without hearing a word of what he had to say.
I dont know if id have another opinion if this hadnt been tied to his upcoming record. He has a voice in his community and shouldve been expressing this a while ago...not only when its time to sell records.
I have no idea what it is to be black in America. But I have had my share of being treated unfair because of my race...
I would break my brothers leg if he titled his (wannabe) CD "[EXPLETIVE]".
their gear?? not a good look....for anyone ;)

There's a difference between being a rapper and being a lyricist. When you mention names like Rakim, Krs-1, Nas, etc., they are lyricist. Lyrics with meaningful content. The media does not want "us" to focus on that, it's too positive, that's why these RAPPERS are on top of the game right now.
Nas has a movement in mind, trust me. The media knows this is bullsh*t that we're listening to, supporting, and focusing on, so that's who they are gonna put at the top-while they laugh behind our backs. The dj's at the radio station have no control over what's being played, contrary to young people's belief, the media does. It's like brain washing. Once you hear a song over and over and over, you find yourself nodding your head. It's sad that we don't know this. That's why a lot of artists are going independent now, they realize that these record labels, the media, etc., is not "on their side". Nas is just going about it in a different way, with change in mind. If the media gonna put da ish out that says it anyway, why not put it all the way in the limelight, make them (the media) scratch their heads. They don't know HOW to take this man now, and that's a good thing, cuz his lyrics have meaning, and the attention alone will increase ablum sells, making more and more people focus on what he's saying, and listen. Then maybe hip-hop will come back to life after all, opening the door for more real artists to get the attention they deserve. They know Nas is not "just another rapper". Remember "Self-Destruction"(KRS-1)? Doesn't it seem like that after that, hip-hop kinda lost air time? Real hip-hop that is. Think about it. They didn't want us to hear that! Too positive for the black community. Since then it's been "blah, blah, blah" on the radio. I can't remember another truly positive song that actually got air time/attention. That's how I look at it. It's a good thing. I'm sure the media is like "WTF???" HAHAHA. And while they're doing that, Nas albums sell, his songs/lyrics are heard, and hip-hop is born again. He's one of the FEW true lyricist able to at least be heard, get a song on the radio,he knows this, and I think he's using that for what it's worth. And das wassup. He's smacking the media in the face and they don't even realize it. |

Yo...I'm calling out all hip-hop. That isht that Nas said made no effin sense. We got to stop fooling ourselves when these brothers start spewing nonsense, and we try to flip it into some deep meaningful isht. I consider Nas one of the leaders of hip hop, but this is just a publicity ploy. Look, CNN already is on the story. When the album drops, it'll be talked about in several media outlets. While i can undertsand Nas' view, I cant agree with how hes presenting himself. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE HATERS WANT. THIS WILL MAKE IT OK FOR THEM TO SAY IT RIGHT IN YOUR FACE.FOOLISHNESS LIKE THIS WILL MAKE IT LEGAL FOR THE FOLKS ON YOUR JOB OR IN GENERAL PUBLIC TO CALL YOU ANY KIND OF RACIAL SLUR. If he wanted to make a statement about IGNORANCE(which is what he stated) then thats the word he should have in bold letters on his shirt. Granted it would not garner the same attention, but that goes to show you what hes looking for. Nas has great points always has but this is too extreme. Words of Af-Ra-Kam (African) origins that came from the original word, "N-G-R (PROUNOUNCED EN-JER)

N-t-y-r (Egypt; pronounced net-ger) = God, Devine
Negash (Ethiopia; ne-gash) = King
Negus (Ethiopia; ne-goos) = Emperor
Nkosi (Xhosa; en-kosi) = God

THE WORD "N-G-R" (EN-JER) AFTER IT WAS CORRUPTED BY THE EUROPEANS
Niger = (Latin or Black/African pronounced "ni-ger.")
Nero = Italian for Black
Negre = French for Black
Negro = Spanish for Black
I cannot as a college graduate (and black woman) allow you to continue to butcher the English language any longer!

I am impressed. There are actually some intelligent people here today. Sharing potent information for the masses. Everyone that really listens to NAS already know where he coming from. His style, lyrics come on you know he take you into his music with your thoughts. Makes you see and hear things that would have otherwise been lost had someone else said it. Open your mind and stop jumping on the bandwagon of others. |

Kids, this is your brain after dropping out of the 8th grade. Dose210, The word might always be around but that certainly doesn't give credence to those that continue to proliferate such a hate filled word. Oh by the way, the next time you choose to use it, think about those countless black men, women and babies who were hanged from trees as the life was sucked from their bodies. The last word many of them heard was the chants of the n word from hundreds sometimes thousands on white onlookers. I can't believe this!!! I just can not believe this. Not only am I hurt, but I am truly disgusted. My soul looks back in wonder!!!! |

HUEmanbro - the N word, niger, negre, and negro are derived from NECRO which means dead. In most european languages G, C, and K are interchangeable without distorting the meaning of the word. It does not mean black and there are no linguistic connections between it and the words like neter, negus, etc. |

THEY MIGHT AS WELL TAKE ALL CURSE WORDS FROM US. IT WASN'T A PROBLEM FOR OUR FATHERS AND MOTHERS USING THE WORD IN THE 70'S. BUT NOW THAT WE HAVE TAKEN IT AND MADE THE WORD A POSITIVE, IT'S BAD. FOCUS ON POVERTY, HUNGER, CHILDREN. BUT LET'S NOT PUT ANY MORE EFFORT IN THIS AREA. NI__A IS HERE TO STAY. |

i know tupac named his album that but that was in what 94? it's not like he did it today. also, he once said that the n'word ending with an er was racist and n'word ending with an a meant a term of endearment. he's not alive now to comment on nas and his choice to name his album but i know he never named his album n'word ending with an er.
@black thought
i saw my comment and im sure you thought i said the n'word since it said expletitive but i said the word will be around like the word spi* referring to mexicans..plus what makes you think im kool with what happened to blacks back in the day? what is the point of your disrespect? |

First he was initally hesitant to TURN AROUND. He DIDN'T HOLD HIS HEAD UP.
Then he starts trying to equate the word with China? Domnican Republic?
He couldn't DEFEND HIS LAST ALBUM TITLE. And if ANYONE is INTELLIGENT ENOUGH, you will realize that he was basically saying THAT'S OVER WITH.
So HIP HOP was DEAD LAST YEAR, but NOW IT'S BACK????? CLEAR PUBLICITY STUNT.
Then, and Then he COULDN'T JUST SHUT UP, he had to FEEL AS IF HE WAS MAKING SENSE.
He says he want to elect a president who will ABLOLISH the rule that Black People will NOT be able to vote in 23 years?

By all means, please run down the corny chit that has come out of the East Coast, because I don't remember ever saying that wasn't the case? There has been a ton of bullchit come from the East, but I can GUARANTEE you that for every ONE corny song that comes from the East, Midwest and West, TEN corny songs come from the South. So please, by all means start naming them... I've also never said that EVERY person down south loves Soulja Boy. I can tell exactly who buys Soulja Boy and the rest of the corny chit from down south: Clueless negroes and white people from ALL parts of the country. So please, before you make accusations, provide some factual information. That being said, I respectfully appreciate our correspondence.

Nigg*ers on the street will be fighting, because Black people we are ready to kick someone's ass if they even look at us wrong.
Imagine if a White person calls you Nigg*er, just to TEST YOU, JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN, because YOU SAID IT WAS OK.
I would LOVE TO SEE THAT SCENERIO.
You say you will TURN THE OTHER CHEEK, YOU A DAMN LIAR.
You will then feel the STING, OF VENOM from someone who thinks your an IGNORANT NIGG*ER and it will HURT.

I can see it now JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN, a group of White Kids who will say loudly or under there breath when they get frustrated at you "STUPID NIGG*ERS", just because you said it doesn't matter, then you would NOT FEEL THE SAME AS NOW.

HE FEELS THAT THE WORD IS UNIVERSAL FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN DISCRIMINATED ALTHOUGH I CANT SAY THAT I AM FEELING IT BUT I THINK WE SHOULD GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO WORK OUT THE KINKS BEFORE WE HANG OUT TO DRY. LIKE I SAID BEFORE HE NEEDS TO PUT DOWN THE WEED AND HEAD BACK TO TEH DRAWING BOARD. HE HAS A GREAT OPPURTUNTIY TO POINT SOME KIDS TO SOME GREAT BOOKS AND DOCUMENTRIES. They can't hide from the message of the song, they can say it, but he shines the light on the ones saying it, he calls white women one, so they would look like fools saying it to try and irritate us!!

@1andonly: 50 Cents FIRST major release, Get Rich or Die Tryin, was a classic and was nominated for Album of the Year, now since that, he's made utter garbage, something we both can agree on. I actually respect 3-6 Mafia, they were hot down south when no one nationally cared about the south and then they were forgotten and came back with a major hit.
See, even though Southern hip hop is amateurish at best to me I recognize the legends and those who actually represent something.

@ Antidumb & Dee1anonly I love ur comments, but question: do u use the word?????
I LOVE to see all the different comments with all the different opinions and not a bunch of ignorant statements on this topic...I keep watching that clip on the red carpet and I just can't get past the fact that that DAMN white girl is wearing it too...Makes me wonder, If that white girl got mad at Nas and called him a "dumb [EXPLETIVE]", would he slap the ish out of her and fire her or would he act like it didn't bother him... or does he allow her or any other "non-black" ppl in his camp go around saying it as casual as we (black ppl) do, I seriously doubt it...Even when they (white ppl or non-black ppl) sing 50cent or T.I. songs and they say the word I don't think they would do so in front of us because they ae aware of the anger behind it coming from them...Basically my thing is it has NO affect on me when WE say it, but it cuts me deep when THEY say it...Call me crazy or whatever, but I look at that the same I do if some chic on the street calls my sister a B*tch, she is saying it out of anger she might get slapped or told off really well, but I say it to my sister with NO anger behind it, no offense intended; THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!!!!! |

I agree with your comments, I was just listening to the "Geto Boys", "My Minds Playing Tricks on Me".
That's real Hip Hop with a message.
And I'm not some PRUDE, I just seek DIVERSITY in Hip Hop, not just Oversexual(the South) or Jail Culture rap(the east), without diversity it becomes ONE IMAGE.
and your smart enough to know that NAS has gone TOO FAR on this one. He is far from when he started or even his "One Mic"(I was listening to that too) days.
His brain has become "completely fried" and now he is LOST IN TRANSLATION. He couldn't even explain INTELLIGENTLY what he's trying to do instead in the normal fashion of someone who's brain "is playing tricks on him"lol, he went off topic and is "RAMBLING", incoherently.
I have another question for MTO BLOGGERS, again what did he mean by saying that he is trying to vote for a president that will 'abolish the rule that Black People can't vote in 23 years'? What the hell does that mean???
Last time I check ALL posting on her(God willing) will be alive, and a Black Man seems to be on his way to winning.
What is the significance of 23 YEARS, 23 years, 23 years? How did he come up with that number.
Sorry folks as the picture demonstrates, this is a brother who NO LONGER can articulate his thoughts and the Devil "WHISPERS CRAZINESS" into his ear when HE'S HIGH.
Check out Jill Scott's story of being called a "Nigg*er" recently:::
-----
Jill Scott explains a recent incident where she was called a [EXPLETIVE] and how she handled it:
“I was waiting outside for the valet to bring the car round, and these … I say kids, but they must have been 25, looking wealthy, five-o’clock-in-the-morning wasted. And this guy’s saying, ‘Step back [EXPLETIVE], step back [EXPLETIVE].’ He’s saying it like it’s a song, but there’s nobody out there but me. I was taken aback, and I said, ‘Excuse me?’
And he said, ‘Shut your mouth and don’t say a word when a white man is talking.’ Continue »
“I’m not kidding. I started laughing, and I followed him and his cohorts through the parking lot laughing hysterically, and they became more and more uncomfortable. It was one of the best moments of outrageous laughter I’ve had. To think for one moment I could possibly fit into that box … I am so far from that word that it is funny. They looked so uncomfortable; I wanted to emasculate him, to make sure he was getting no nookie that night. The girls sobered up and were looking scared. It was something else - the first time in my life I’ve been called that. Wow. But I enjoyed it. You must fight back; it’s imperative. I like the fight in me now.”
-----
THis word CAN NEVER be thought to be insignificant. We feed it to the world through our music. Admit that, but don't send a message that's it's ok, just because we have come to use it like we say "you know what I'm saying". Imagine others saying "Nigg*er" like we say "you know what I'm saying" all because WE CLAIM IT'S OK.
And you and I know as INTELLIGENT THINKERS, there will be MANY that would love to put this "It's just a word crap" TO THE TEST. |

Getting away from music, Nas and otherwise
In my humble opinion, NOBODY should be using the word, white black or otherwise. I don't use the word but I can't tell people whether to use it or not but I will say that I don't and will not answer to it.
I think it's quite hypocritical of black folks to use the word in any way and expect no one else to use it. The same goes with ethnic slurs for any race. |

@BrutallyHonest
Your right, but you know what my fear is, because I listen to a lot of "old school" rappers like Rakim, KRS-ONE, Gang Starr(guru), etc even the rappers with a lighter approach like Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie etc.. The word was NOT in there music and their flows where still "tight".
Now my fear is, is that the word has become so COMMON in rap, that some rappers as well as US, CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE CREATING LYRICS WITHOUT IT. They will think it's "CORNY". That's how far we lost touch and how far it's gotten out of hand.
So that brings us to where we are now, trying to ACT LIKE, it's ok, because a VISION OF IT NOT EXISTING in rap is UNBELIEVABLE. The younger people of my generation(I'm 26)can't even imagine this. "What, we not trying to sound corny" is the mentality. So the approach has become trying to make it SEEM OK.
IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT. It's like telling rappers they can't say "you know what I'm saying", they would be LOST.
So now we look like IDIOTS accepting a word to be used in a CASUAL SENSE.
Just like many other NEGATIVE things leave it up to us to take it ONE STEP FURTHER.
At the least we must emphasize that though it's used in our music, this is a word of SIGNIFICANCE, and a word used within our communities but you CANNOT use it frivolously.
Not to long ago Timberland went to Germany and a man got upset with him and called him a Nigg*er, he and his crew gave him a BEAT DOWN.
Imagine Nas in his Mansion(?? brothers probably broke) chillin while we have to deal with our theory of "it's just a word" being PUT TO THE TEST. I remind Black people we think we are big and bad, but always remember there are STILL people of other races that don't give a Fu*ck and THEY WILL STEP TO YOU, DON'T GET CONFUSED.
NAS is becoming Venom in our communities. |

Well go research it and get back to me, because I've never heard of such RIDICULOUSNESS, my Mom works for HIGH LEVEL GOVERNMENT, so what your saying MAKES NO SENSE.
Unless we are put to sleep for decades then waken up with a CHANGE IN RULES, Oprah, Colin and everybody else will just allow it to be a fact that Black people can't vote in 23 years.
I don't want to attack you, but I am way too intelligent to focus on "STUPIDITY". This is not a year after we gain rights to vote and it's still a "fickle" situation.
How would Black People be banned from voting in 23 years? EXPLAIN THAT INTELLIGENTLY PLEASE.

People act like because of this album it will give racist whites the liscense to use it, but I have news for you THEY USE IT EVERYDAY!!
As long as whites exist this word is live and well!! The only difference now is they'll have to include themselves as part of the definition whether they want to or not!! |

its not about WANTING some white kid to call me [EXPLETIVE]..they use the word amongst themselves all the time.....they even say it when they are singing lyrics to their favorite rappers song or quoting their favorite comedian.. the word isn't going anywhere..we act like the [EXPLETIVE] can disappear into thin air..it'll never happen. if we didn't want anyone else using the word besides us..we wouldn't have rappers and comedians who know who their core audience is (white people) using the word so frequeantly.....this isn't gonna give white people a license to use it, it is gonna make them EVEN more uncomfortable about using it PERIOD. white people are uncomfortable about singing certain lyrics in front of us because they don't know how we are gonna react...i see it all the time.....im like dog, i can't get mad at you for reciting the words to a dave chappelle joke, whether you are racist or not, dave chappelle and many other comedians and artists, know exactly who their audience is when they are making up these raps and these jokes.....for us to get on NAS about the name of his album is the most hypocritical chit i've seen from us in years.... |

YES! The word, technically means ignorant and has nothing to do with race, but...
Its been used in such a way that it carries with it 500 years of Slavery, lynchings, beatings, ripping apart of families, and bigotry that still exists today.
You cant compare that to a white person that gets discriminated against a few times in their life for one reason or another.
If you want to pay homage to your ancestors that were beaten and murdered and abused all while being called that word, then do it. Dont try and take the sting out of it by including everyone in that.

AintIDumb sense you are to lazy to look [EXPLETIVE] up for yourself heres a biscuit from wikipedia. 2006 + 25 = 2008 + 23.
The National Voting Rights Act of 1965 (42 U.S.C. § 1973–1973aa-6)[1] outlawed the requirement that would-be voters in the United States take literacy tests to qualify to register to vote, and it provided for federal registration of voters in areas that had less than 50% of eligible minority voters registered. The Act also provided for Department of Justice oversight to registration, and the Department's approval for any change in voting law in districts that had used a "device" to limit voting and in which less than 50% of the population was registered to vote in 1964. It was signed in 1965, and signed for a 25 year extension by President George W. Bush on July 27, 2006.
While the Act is often considered a landmark in civil rights legislation, it has been criticized by some (especially during talks of renewal in 2006) as a bill that has achieved its goal of minority voting and now has become an overreach of federal power or too demanding of certain states.[2] |

soulsister.....this is gonna stir nothing up, white boys don't come up to black dudes where i'm from and say, Wassup [EXPLETIVE]? it never happens that way.....but i do hear and see them talk amongst themselves and they'll call each other [EXPLETIVE]. furhtermore, its just a word. our forefathers this, our forefathers that, i think our ancestors would be alot more disappointed in the way we lack family structure and the way we kill each other as opposed to us not giving a [EXPLETIVE] about a WORD. there are tons more serious [EXPLETIVE] to worry about in the black community then people outside of our race using the N-WORD..i personally don't give a [EXPLETIVE] who uses it around me, i have no control over that and i'm not offended by it, the N-WORD means nothing to me and that is exactly how i take the power out of it.....if a white boy ever came up to me and said, "Whats up my [EXPLETIVE]?" i would reply with, "Whats up [EXPLETIVE]?" |

The one thing that I DESPISE the most is the GRASPING OF STRAWS.
Now explain to me how this would occur in this century in our history, considering the fact that Black people are no longer ALL OPPRESSED TOGETHER, but hold many positions and statures.
Or maybe you think Oprah, Obama, Colin, Condelezza, etc, etc....., would be KILLED OFF.
PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE, there are a few people on this site who have their head SO FAR UP THERE ASS, I can't conversate with them in an intelligent way.
And oh, by the way the MANY WHITE SUPPORTERS OF OBAMA would agree to this too right???
That was an act created at one of the weakest eras of our history, that could have been viable THEN, but IT COULD NEVER BE NOW.
Just the fact that I say "over my dead body" should give you a little idea of why it would be.

There's a difference between "freedom of speech" and making sense.
I can say ANYTHING, I want but what does it mean.
Don't Black woman have enough issues, imagine being considered a Nigg*er Bit*ch to your face like back in the days.
Scroll up to one of my other post, and read about Jill Scott being called a Nigg*er. It doens't matter until it happens to you.
And there are SO MANY people who would love to test our theory that "it's ok".
We are becoming and known as the "retards" of the planet. How can we get upset at Imus? What if he said those are some "nappy headed Nigg*er's", Isn't that FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Look at what happened and he didn't even say anything close to that.

Because there is NO WAY IN HELL, I will allow the word to become casual in referring to me, so there will be a SEPERATION within our race where people like ME, will refer to you as the NIGG*ER'S and you will stand out NEGATIVELY BECAUSE OF IT.

Nas whole focus is on Hip-Hop, I'm quite sure. The war within our race stems back much further than ANY hip hop song/artist. There's soooo many different ways to look at this as a whole, there's really no point in arguing.
But Nas has a movement in mind, and at least he was/is bold enough to take that stand. The word [EXPLETIVE], [EXPLETIVE] is being used by the majority of young america, which is who he's targeting. SOMEONE...has to take a stand. And by him doing this one little move, which as we see WILL bring him attention and album sells, hopefully will only draw attention to his lyrics. You can't possibly think that Nas would release an album full of f**kin and gangbangin, unless you know NOTHING about his history as an artist. With that being said, I think his whole intention is to bring attention to lyrics and real artists, true hip-hop. Hip-hop is the BIGGEST voice in the black community, and no matter how you wanna look at the album title, the word IS used HEAVILY by us as well as other races and ESPECIALLY in rap music. Let's not forget that Nas is NOT running for president, he IS a lyricist.
"ooooo, he said it on CNN!!!" So the f**k what??? They laughin at us anyway, with or without Nas, now he givin em something to talk about das all. His intentions are genuine, positive, and hopefully WILL have a STRONG effect on the HIP HOP community. Some of yall act like he really tryna run for some kind of office, no, he's focused on HIP-HOP and the course it's on. And SOMEONE needs to change it. SOMEONE. |

@spraggaswifey----lol. Really though. It's so easy to lose focus.
Nas is a lyricist. He's focused on hip-hop, this is just an "extension" of hip-hop is dead, and yes, the media is scratching their heads thinking that he's about to be something 'else' they can laugh at, and when everyone starts listening to his lyrics, hopefully that will kinda change the direction this "rap" music is headed in, and the media will have no choice but to switch it up. After all they LOOOOOVE the content of these songs that's out now, that have NO real meaning/content for our people, Nas however, is foolin their azz(media) and drawing album sells to REAL hip hop. Period. The album is gonna draw sells by ALL, and even if you still don't like the album title after it's released, he STILL gonna kick dat knowledge on da album and hopefully it will rub off on other artists. |

NAS hasn't convinced me on this one..
When I first heard that Nas was going to title his next album the N-word,
I thought O.K ..
that can be groundbreaking, and everyone might not agree with it ...
but at least it will promote healthy dialogue about the subject...
Now it's obvious to me that he's simply using this word
rooted in so much hate and pain as a MARKETING TOOL.
nothing more than a PUBLICITY STUNT...
Why else would he show up on National T.V wearing a shirt that says N**ger in BOLD LETTERS
And to top it off was not even able to intelligently articulate his reasoning behind
using the word...

I don't know why ya'll freely accept this word. [EXPLETIVE] is no representation of me anymore than ho is. Just because i'm black doesn't mean I have to acknowledge that word the same way i'm a woman and I don't acknowledge "ho". If you call me a [EXPLETIVE] i'll just look at you like you must have gotten me mistaken for someone else...like you called me the wrong name or something. lol. Blacks need to stop accepting that word as a representation of us. The next time one of your white friends want to be cool and hip, just tell them to call you by your real names...king or queen. And the next time your black cousin wants to call you a "term of endearment" tell them to call you king or queen...it's so much more endearing than [EXPLETIVE] |

Damn, there's a lot of semintelligence here! (BTW, Antidumb, to say, "I can't conversate with them in an intelligent way," is spectacularly oxymoronic!! "Conversate" is simply not a word -- it's not even decent slang.)
Nas is BRILLIANT! How does one condemn a man for refusing to be oppressed by A WORD that was used to oppress his ancestors? The word "[EXPLETIVE]" was created DURING SLAVERY to oppress SLAVES, then continued usage as a way to demean and diminish Blacks after slavery. It is often said, "the best revenge is to live well"; how better to live than than to TAKE BACK a word, stand on top of a multi-million-dollar contract, in all your "glory" and say, "I'm not a [EXPLETIVE], I am THE [EXPLETIVE]" -- thus OWNING the term!
Just as White folks now will no longer be held psychologically-accountable or made to feel guilty by the deeds of their predecessors -- Black folks should now cast-off the shackles of debasement borne by their ancestors from the words of White folks! Either that, or we should also ban bad, bitch, boy, dog, freak, gal and lynch (for real). We gotta stop being so schizophrenic: if someone on the street says, "f^ck you", you wanna fight -- but if your lover says, "ooh baby, I'ma f^ck you", you smile and dig in deeper! My people.... |

I respect Nas' artistic and creative ability, but he's O.Ding on this "Ni@@er" shyt. To me, the homie sees this album, as a make it or break it joint. So, he feels controversy and debate will fuel album sales. I definitely don't feel Nas and his women Kelis walking around with "Ni@@er" splashed across the chest and back is a good look for the culture or black people in general.
I think this ploy may backfire on Nas, unless this album is a classic masterpiece, with deeply thought provoking lyrics and innovative production. He seems to be using the old "2 Live Crew" and "N.W.A" playbook for generating a buzz and album sales.
I remember how blown way I was when I saw Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" and to me Spike had an agenda for showing all those degrading, stereotypical images, that most moviegoers didn't understand. I hope I can say the same thing about Nas' "Ni@@er" album, when it's all said and done. |

Good point, Bamboozled was genius because Spike forced us to embrace the past and never forget the way African Americans were portrayed in those days, he shadowed those images with contemporary movies and t.v shows … he basically asked us “how far have we really come?”
I’m not seeing how NAS is going to turn this into a positive, I’m missing the message ( I don’t even think NAS knows the message to be honest with you) as I mentioned before it seems as if he’s trying to generate a buzz…. I’ve lost all respect for him if this is the case |

It saddens me that in 2008, we have black people wearing T-shirts with the N-word written on the front.

I wasnt using the term to describe him as a 'sell out'. Im saying he used the biggest stage in public view to promote his new record.
yeah, His message is lost because of the poor delivery methods used to make his point. :(

Thank you :)
I will also inform you that all of our races have 'issues' LoL!! I remember sitting in class and hearing this (Asian) kid ask why do I have to celebrate MLK day?...im not Black. He wasnt saying it to be an ass or to offend anyone...he was just ignorant to the history.
I told him that the Civil rights fight is reason WHY your parents picked u up from school in a Benz. The reason why its ok that u attend this university. You dont see any other color being beaten in the street,fighting for the civil rights that are shared by everyone....respect that.
Also, We as asian people go thru the same "Light is right" attitudes.
Go to any Asian country: The darker u are, the more people look down at u. Trust me, Black people havent cornered the market on skin bleach LoL!! I'm one of the 'darker' ones and I love my skin...despite how some of my own peeps feel about it. :)
@@@@ DreDog
Thats the reason why this world will always have conversations like this. If this story was about a new Beyonce song,Britney spears drama or what Jayz is doing at lunch today, it would be a million pages long....priorities
atleast people are looking for answers and contributing more than 'who's hot in the music game right now' type sh!t.
@@@spraggaswifey
dont get it twisted, Black people arent the only ones who go thru racist BS....yeah, they go thru the most, but it doesnt take away from what other people of color go thru.
I sit and read people saying that Black people use the word all the time...I was tought that ni@@a is used amongst some black people as acceptable slang in music and amogst each other, while ni@@ER is meant to offend....PERIOD. I dont use either, but even I know Thats 2 TOTALLY different words.
I'm not sure how y'all get down on the east coast, but here on the west, you'll hear Hispanic folks and even Asian refer to themselves (and close friends) as ni@@A.....but would never use the ni@@ER version, as its not the same word.
Its simply not acceptable, just like the swastika will never be acceptable again in the history of the planet....nor should it ever be.
Im sure there are hella (racist) people im around everyday that would love to call me a G@@K....but Fear keeps them in check.
Leave the N word where its at. If NAS thinks that the 'N word' is the thing thats holding people back....he's sadly mistaken. It will simply be replaced by another word....thats real talk.
Plus I'd have to throw the CD cover in the trash anyway, my Family would go the [EXPLETIVE] off if they saw that album laying around the house!!

People always looking to be better than someone else. i.e. People of middle eastern decent... portrayed as terrorists by the (white) media and being accepted by everyone...ain't that racist???? |

Nas has taken black people back 60 years. I know people like Ossie Davis, MLK and Rosa Parks and the freedom fighters who past are spinning in their graves. He lost his damm mind. It's a shame he sold out his own people to sell records. Records? This is the true Uncle Tom. It's funny he called Kobe and Tiger coons and you walking around with the N-word on your chest like an idiot and have the nerve to say everyone are N***ers and ignorant including the white reporter. That white reporter paused and looked at him and was thinking "Who me? You are the one wearing the shirt I'm not a N***er" |

@@@NATURALDRED
Let grown folks talk...if you have nothing to say, step to the side.
I sat and read most of it because I honestly want to know what people are thinkin in regards to this subject. The fact that im taking my (valuable)time to do so should tell you how important it is....
Not sure how I sound like Fred@MTO?? Arent you reppin the MTO logo as your avatar? :)
Please be the first person here to go to work and leave your new 10 cd covers on your desk...I wanna see what happens. Half the people will call u an idiot and the other half will want to beat ur ass at lunch. LoL!!
all joking aside, It's jus not acceptable. He has a fan base that will listen to his 'words' regardless...he should b more wise when choosing them.
It's jus my opinion :) |

For the people who can't grasp the concept of what Nas is speaking of, your one of the [EXPLETIVE] he's talking about. You idiots wanna bury the word so you can let whitey off the hook. I'll forever say [EXPLETIVE] to remind you [EXPLETIVE] that racism still exists and the white people need to be responsible for their actions. |

people have got to keep in mind how powerful words are. you can SPEAK things into being. perhaps us continuing to use the word is what is causing the state of our race today... just something to think about. |

@HUEmanbro
you're right, alot of people dont know history. that's why we know they aren't using the term in its original sense, but in the european way. that's what they learned, not the truth. that's the whole problem with the way it's being used today. |

To be Honest with you....I really don't have a problem with it at all as long as Nas takes it where it needs to be Taken...Nas is one of the only rappers out there that has the Lyrical Fortitude and street cred to really make inroads to wake the masses of our people up OUT OF THEIR SLEEP.....Is it a Publicity stunt? sure it is.....but Again if Nas is willing to take this Album where it needs to go and wake this generation up.. I have no problem at all
My only problem with Nas is that He teases you too much....He is a Lyrical genious and he has the ability to have this Hip Hop Community in the palms of his hand, but he fades from that type of responsibility. I remeber the time with that whole jay-z battle....I thought nas was going to Just shut everything down...he was exposing a lot about the industry and the politics behind the radio stations and I truelly felt he would become a rebel kind of like Pac...But No this N1gger just Fizzled out and started contradicting himself.....then he joined forces with Jay-z.....
I mean WTF.....
As long as the Dude really takes it there and open people minds.....I could care less about a word....Bottom line is this....if you are not a N1gger then why worry what someone calls you.....If you are not a B1tch.....then why get upset if some one calls you that....that's not you so keep it moving.....Now if a person puts their hands on you.....then we got a problem.....
IT'S 2008.....LETS WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FRIED CHICKEN BURNING!!!!! |

this just goes to show that despite the negative connotations of the "n" word, freedom of speech trumps everything...
freedom of speech has no class nor creed and in this case no sense of history... |

personally i think it's hilarious that we celebrate the word being used in almost 100% of mainstream rap but have a problem when the word is explicitly on the cover of an album. think people... |

It's a publicity play in order to sell albums. If the KKK were walking down the street with the same t-shirt, I bet Nas would be singing another tune. |

for all of you that are calling them ignorant are ignorant yourself. the only reason ya'll have a problem wit the word [EXPLETIVE] is because of all the drama from this word and what you heard from someone else.
each and everyone of you have used that word atleast once in your lives so why when he makes an album called that its a problme...mto makes us look badd not nas or kelis.
let him do what he does cus he's stil guna make money |
