MTO plays a lot but I actually understand what they're saying here. First off - Vogue has only put about 10 black people on their cover out of the hundreds they've printed. But when they do it's always something "extra" like a normal beautiful black face won't sell records. Remember the last black face - that he/she man dressed like a woman??
I honestly believe King Kong was the inspiration for this photo shoot. Someone probably watched the movie and said, "hey! let's get a big scary black man to hold one our models in a pic! And that can be our next black cover. We won't have to do another for another 12 months!!"

Is it me? or does it seem that white people seem to "try" to put out all the stops in terms of attacks on black people, lately?
I've started noticing a "hype-up" amount of attacks especially within the last year and a half (that's at least when it really hit me)...
- The many noose sightings in the workplaces across the country
- Racially motivated shootings by cops
the ever Racist American media
- Subtle, yet back-handed crap like this magazine cover above

Then I realized it seems that the influx of racial attacks seem so desperate and so frequent that it seems to be stemming from some major fear... But whose fear? and why? What has changed, particularly in the last 5 years, to make this so called, "phantom" afraid (that is in no way to say that racism has been at an all-time low)... Then I thought about it - There is a Black man running for president... Aha, seems likely to me that some would be afraid of THAT!
Just a thought, but is beginning to seem more and more apparent to me!
This crap reminds me of the racist propaganda of 1800s when all types foolishness was pulled to crush the resolve and solidarity of black people on a mass level. |

The article is on the best bodies, so I'm certain there's another why they could have shot Lebron that would have emphasized his physique without making him look so fearsome and aggresive. Just because Vogue is a reputable magazine doesn't mean that it isn't racist. How many people of color are on the editorial staff at Vogue? None, that I know of. Forget the cover, flip through their fashion editorials, and you'll be hard pressed to find any models of color at all, let alone black models. It's usually page after page of white models. The last time they had a black model on the cover, she (Chanel Iman) was on the inside flap with a bunch of other white girls. This is the second time in as many years that a black celebrity was photographed for the cover of that magazine, with mouth ajar, in an unflattering pose.

So, even though you don't see it, Vogue is institutionally racist. I'm not an Obama supporter, but it's times like this when I hope he does succeed, cause black people could really use a better role model than these a lot of these black athletes and entertainers, a lot of which are not very educated. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that Lebron was an unwitting participant in all of this. And if he didn't know any better, he needs to smarten up. And for all you people saying, oh sports magazines have black athtletes posing like that all the time . . ." those are niche sports magazines that depict sport, not mainstream, taste making, opinion shaping cultural mainstays like Vogue. One problem I have is his mouth being wide open. Why do white magazines always show us with our damn mouths open? She looks like she's kind of scared of him, so I see the King Kong reference.
Vogue could have done a better shot. I do think it's racist. Essence would have never displayed him this way.

I try not to sit back and obsess over racism. I dont want my mind to be overtaken my negative thoughts or always feeling like our people are being victimized or portrayed in an animalistic light, but this image is definitely surving a purpose. Before I clicked on this article, I already knew he was being portrayed as a crazed ape ravishing this white women. King (James) Kong, King of the apes. I'm not one to pull race cards because that move is over used, but this was a definite subliminal jab at black men. I had to come back to this thread because this has probably been one of the most thoughtful discussions on this board in a long time. I looked at the picture again it still just doesn't sit well with me. Even if they were juxataposing what each of them does best professional, the way they set the picture up still looks suspect. My conspiracy theory switch might have been flipped, but look at Gisele's body language. They could of have selected a more demure pose for her, maybe one of her leaning into Lebron. Instead, her body is pulled away from him. She has a smile on her face but her stance is one of slight repulsion. (Think about how you stand when I stank dude approaches you in the club and tries to whisper in your ear, that's the exact pose she has.) Then look at the placement of her feet. It's as if she's in mid-flight, trying to flee from him. Hell it looks like he caught her in mid-run. People want to act like racism doesn't exist, but it's still alive and kicking. Just because the white man knows not to call you a ni@@a to your face, it doesn't mean he's not thinking it behind closed doors. (And while that may not have been the express purpose of the photo editors, I still find their choice of picture highly suspicious.) |

You missed my point totally. I only referred to his attire because people were saying that he should be in a suit. What about when I pass thru a magazine aisle I gotta look at different booty magazines dipicting our black women as whores and sluts and not get mad about that? What about us supporting the violence filled music OUR artist makes at the expense of our young black youth mimicking the destructive behavior? What about writing our mayors and congressperson about the illiteracy of our black children?
