I think she was out of order but in no way does it constitutes the comments made about her and the black race on that website. She should have sung both versions as she did sing well.
You may want to view those comments. It speaks volumes on what we already knew...racism is live, and active! People are bursting at the seams waiting to use anything we do as individuals to represents us all in the public eye.
It's not fair and somehow Obama is the blame? Not all people are ready for change...but a change must come soon! |

People, when you sing the National Anthem PLEASE STICK WITH the National Anthem. Y'all know them white folks want to lynch black people when they find out there is actually a Black National Anthem and they were forced to listen to it. That chick is lucky to leave that building alive.
The real crime is that it too her 3 FULL MINUTES to sing that damn thing. I would have thrown a tomato at her 2 minutes into it. |

Divinebeauty: I'm not easily offended so none taken.
The Black National Anthem is intended to remember and honor African-Americans. Not Americans and not Africans. Basically it ignores whites when we sing it in their presence. The National Anthem is supposed to make us feel like Blacks and Whites are included (as it became an official about 20 years after slavery was abolished) but we all know we are not equal even today. As you said, that was made clear by all the ignorant comments posted on that site.
The Black National Anthem should be sang where/when it's expected and APPRECIATED, not at random. That was clearly random. |

That was not the appropriate time to be creative….as for everyone rather caucasion, african american, spanish, asian, indain, ect…I can’t say what no one else on this earth will do no matter who is elected, though i will say this. I do believe ANY race should have the right to be elected as a president. My poor children. Let me pose a question; which type of Negro are you? Lets focus on the mentality of Blacks some 200 years ago. Are you a house negro, field negro, or free negro. I would argue that I am a field negro, for I thought what she did was courageous and inspirational. Those of you who thoght it was wrong are house negroes, because yousss afraids to upsets massa. You free negroes don't care either way. My youts, start challenging the status quo and wake up. How ignorant some of you are in here. But there's hope, you can read, learn and change, not conform/assimilate! There will NEVER..NEVER be a time and place for blacks to do what they feel in white america. Even if Obama does get into the office...its still going to be white america..not because of the man in the office because(I am 1000% percent behind that man)..but because 4 or maybe 8 yrs in office won't change decades and decades of the mass destruction of whats already in our minds. We have been beaten, raped, mutilated, humiliated and the list could go on and on. Let me add some sense to this.
1) The woman was wrong! You don't go to an event with your own agenda. The plan was to sing the National Anthem and that is what she should have done. Imagine you have a wedding and all the bridesmaids are to wear green. The day of the wedding, someone shows up wearing red, black, and green and an afro! You would be pissed as hell. Not necessarily because you're against the message. But because of the principle. I am a Black Woman and I shook my head. It was wrong for her to make everyone feel uncomfortable just for the sake of making a point.
2) Right is right and wrong is wrong. This is 2008. Enough with the goddamn field, house and negro analogies. If I begin a job and my White employer asks me to do specific tasks that I may not feel necessarily applies to me, will I be a house negro and do what I'm assigned because I need my job and aspire to advance my career? Or will I be a field negro and tell my boss to go to hell? At that point, she should have been American and sang the damn song. Have Black pride, but there's a time and place for everything under the sun.
3) These kinds of actions are counterproductive to equal rights. How do you scream "equal rights" and then turn around and pull this kind of mess?
I understand why she did it, but once again she was plain wrong for doing it. |

What up JustTheFactsMam! Thanks for understanding. Some of you are very naive, always worrying about what other races think of us. True there is maad ignorance among us, music, tv, everyday things we see. But I would rather somebody do something of this magnitude to get attention, than a Lil Wayne performance or Flavor of Love etc. Some of speak on time and place, how simple minded you are. Was there a time and place for slavery, raping our grandmothers, killing innocent black men, destorying black communities, jim crow laws, MLK assasination, poor/lack of education in inner cities, police brutality/profiling???? Was there a time and place for all of that??? NO, so shut the hell up, and allow more people to take a chance and show that the 360 of Blacks becoming one is on the rise. So now I challenge all the house negroes to lift every voice and sing if you even know it! And some body up there spoke about some example at work, of course your going to behave at any job, even if its at the NAACP, for there's a time and place for everything, and her time was there and now to create a voice with a black negro spiritual, after all America inspired the song. |

@laydee505…it’s apparent that you AREN’T American. To assume something is wrong with black American’s criticizing the actions of another black American is just some “outsiders” racist rhetoric. WE apparently, unlike the country you hail from, acknowledge that our nation is a melting pot consisting of various ethnic groups. The anthem in question is the NATIONAL anthem…not what JaneDough aptly and quite well described as a hymn meant only for a group within our larger society to be uplifting and encouraging. The singer was tasked to sing the NATION ANTHEM…but chose instead to be divisive at a public, official (all inclusive) event. She…..was….wrong…period. I’m sure the majority of the posters here would be equally annoyed had it been a white singer or any one else that chose to perform a song other than the NATIONAL anthem that was specifically identifiable to their own ethnic group to the exclusion of others present. So IF you reside here in our nation laydee…welcome to America….racist behavior, real or perceived is NOT confined to white society only. |

Its 2008 and its way past the time for us to evolve and be able to communicate our issues in a manner in which we will actually be heard and respected.

Lift every (Black) voice & sing?

This woman did something many blacks would not have done and I applaud her courage. And she sounded great too. It may not been the time or place but there will neva be a time in place for the Black National Anthem. Whites would've nevered ask a black person to sing our anthem at any event. Well I honestly think she was courageous for doing that. I also think it was creative. I really dont care if the white people didnt like it, who really gives a [EXPLETIVE]? They dont like anything we do unless it can make them some money.
As far as all the racist comments on the site. Racism is very alive, and the funny thing is, most of the people making those horrible racist comments are the white people you interact with every day who smile in yo face and pat you on the back trying to prove theyre "not racist" whatever.
On the other hand, if certain black people would learn how to act, maybe there wouldnt be so much negative stuff to say about our race! It embarasses me and disheartens me the way black folks disrespect themselves and others.
talking all loud in public. almost every black girl i pass in the street is talking about who they wanna fight, who wants to fight them, or who had a fight with them. black men are outside all times of night blasting music and reving up motorycles that they obviously bought with drug money cuz they dont have a damn job. if they did they wouldnt be on the stoop or in front of the corner store all day.
black people getting out in public being aggressive and bulying people, acting like inconsiderate jerks and azzholes. [EXPLETIVE] in the elevator and spitting on the floor where they live. writing on the walls and making noise while working class citizens are trying to sleep so they can get up early and go to work in the morning to provide for their kids. or should i say working class women! cuz half the men dont even take care of their kids. beating up on their women. destroying their brains drinking alcohol and smoking weed all day.
GET A LIFE! WAKE UP PEOPLE! im not saying this is all black people, but these are the ones who make the most noise and are out there putting on a [EXPLETIVE] show for the white people. then get mad when white people call us classless [EXPLETIVE], give us no respect and dont want to associate wit us or let us live in their neighborhood.
then you say white people are jealous and wanna be like us. i dont know any white people who wanna be broke welfare recipients smoking weed on the stoop all day. get a damn job and do the right things and give white people a real reason to be jealous of us aside from our style, rhythm and music talent.
how bout we start reading books and paying attention in school so that when a white person sees a rich black person, they dont automatically think we are either sports players or rappers.
GET A CLUE NEGROES!!!! WAKE UP! lets prove the white people WRONG! stop confirming their stereotypes and proving them RIGHT! DUH! |

To negrodamus:
Whether you realize it or not, your tone echoes that of many white Americans today. You insist that in order for us to understand our position in this country, we must think of ourselves as slaves (i.e. house negro, field negro, or free negro). Many whites see us on that very level. You refer to us (your own people) as "children", "ignorant", "naive", and demand that we (your own people) "shut the hell up." How different are those comments than the very sentiments of those posting on that other site? They take the first opportunity to attempt to put us down and under their foot.
Go, preach your word to the masses but not at the expense of our own esteem. The degradation of old that has become the anthem of whites today should never NEVER be phrased in the mouths of those we call our own. I am no child. I am neither ignorant nor naive. And I am far frome being a house negro, a field negro, or a free negro from times past. And I address that to you, negrodamus, and any white Americans that see my people as such. |

The Black National Anthem is a serious, deep and solemn expression of our struggle. Instead of keeping it in the honored place that it deserves, this woman has used it to throw mud at white people and in the process introduced it to non-blacks as something other than for what it was intended. She had no right to do this. She was wrong. |

The way I see it, it is the same amount of disrespect as if she was brought in to sind "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and she sang "I Could Write a Book" instead. Disrepctful to not perform what you were asked to, but not disprectful beyond that. She sang a different song, that is it! While she did a great job I understand the outrage.
Think about it. You know when you go to church and you see that they're going to sing your favorite song and you're all excited and ready to sing it just the way you remember it? And then they sing it a different way? And it sounds bad too? I can understand how they feel. Even if she did a good job they're still pissed because they were ready to sing the Star Spangled Banner. It's almost the 4th of July. It's part of the process. It's part of summer. They just weren't ready for all of that.
Did they have to take it this far? Couldn't they just let it slide and move on to other things?
Oh, and besides. They should have known that a bald woman with bangs is always up to something. And it's probably something you're not going to like. |

If YOU weren't on welfare BROKE and constantly outside all times of the day & night... how could you possibly know who's there & what they're doing??? Is it broadcast via satellite???
Get your big azz up off that milk crate you call a chair & GO GET A JOB!
College BOY... I highly doubt you're in college. IF you were... your analogies would AT LEAST be slightly relative to the TOPIC.

Wow, She was wrong.....
Im Filipino and would have had my azz beat by my own family if I got up and sang the Filipino version when hired to sing the National Anthem.
This is a nation of ONE. If I didnt think it was or could one day be...Id move back to the PI.
Every ethnic group has its struggles. It's all about WHERE.WHEN and HOW we choose to fight them.
It was disrespectful to our Nation |

Doing what the fukk you're supposed 2 do has nothing to do with being "submissive," or having a "house ni**a" mentality. It's simple and someone made the point about someone showing up to someone's wedding wearing the wrong sh*t to make a statement....YOU JUST DON'T DO IT!!
Stop being stupid motherfukkas!!!!!
KKKraKas will say stupid sh*t and anyone who thinks that white folks loves you, need for someone to do this type stuff so that you can see how much they still hate us!! We don't have to be them or be like them, but we have a duty to our forefathers that lost lives, hung from trees, fought off conspiracy to get us to a point of being functional in this crazy country we were forced to be in! There's nothing wrong with standing up for your principals, just know how to go about doing it!! That was NOT the way to go about it!!!! |

EffDat:
I understand EXACTLY what you're talking about. Although I hate to admit it, it's nothing but the absolute truth. I live in Chicago and I went to our annual Taste of Chicago last night to see the firework show. There were roughly 1 million people there of all races. WHO do you think were the ONLY ones acting a plum fool?
I'm sure you guessed right. I was sooooo embarrassed. Like I said before, the actions of a few who make themselves highly visible will cause the majority of the rest of us to suffer.
I applaud the woman for having the courage to take a stand for something she believes in, but I feel like that was not the best way to do it. |
