UMMMMM ..... ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY GETS ITS OWN BARBIE DOLL ... AND WE THINK THAT'S GREAT ... BUT WHY IS THE DOLL SO LIGHT????

July 08, 2008. MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that a new Barbie Doll is going to be created which honors the oldest Black sorority in the nation. Here's how the press release is describing it:
Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition AKA Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority.

The doll, outfitted in a pink and green evening gown, matching jeweled shoes and gold jewelry, honors the Chicago-headquartered sorority, the first established by black women.

The sorority has inducted about 200,000 members -- including actress Phylicia Rashad, educator Marva Collins and author Toni Morrison -- since its founding at Howard University in 1908.

We think it's a great look for both Mattell and the AKAs. But if the doll is supposed to be representing a sorority for Black Women - why did they choose to make the doll that color ....

And to all the proud AKAs out there - we're not trying to start no mess. But somebody had to ask the question ....

Well, you know why the damn doll is so light, stop asking questions

Actually the doll is a Caramel tone, black women come in all shades, if it was dark you would probably ask why is it so crispy. Stop finding stuff wrong and just congratulate

Skeeweeeee!.....but we come in all shades...aka's that is....but with the progression of the sorority there did become a time when more lighter women crossed...but the founders werent and didnt intend for it to be that way...its for all women that can uphold the AKA beliefs .

I guess the brown paper bag test still hasn't gone away. This is sending the wrong subliminal signal. That's not caramel, that's yellow. The whole "Black Greek" system is bogus anyway. All of my love, peace and happiness..... whole notha topic.

MTO, y'all really need to stop TRIPPIN'!!!! That doll does not have an especially fair complection! The doll's skin color is TOASTY BROWN - much darker than Alicia Keys, Mya, Hale, Beyonce, Queen Latifah and about as brown as Oprah. Stop trying to start stuff!

By the way, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha come in ALL the beautiful shades of the rainbow!

    robii
Could the brown paper bag test be the reason?

Question wasn't whether AKA's are different shades. The question was why they chose a doll that is an obvious depiction of the AKA stereotype. Subliminal message, kids.

    @SUTHERNBEAUTI,

You made an excellent point with your comment, they sould make different shades of the doll and as far as the whole light skinned issue goes shades of skin tone varies from campus to campus, when I was in college the Delta's were more popular on campus and in greater numbers than AKA's, and the AKA's on campus were in various shades and sizes, there were even a few thick AKA's..I think the light skinned rule has faded over the years and is steadily changing for the better.

    itssohrd2bme
Congrats to the AKA's but the need to come out with a DELTA SIGMA THETA doll bc we all know were the best j/k....but on a serious note we need black greeks to get more recognition is this world so this is just the first step!!

The FIRST Barbie based on ANY sorority...That is absolutely wonderful...I'm so proud. I agree with you @ Goldenchild, the sorority is for all women who can uphold the beliefs of the organization...however one must be voted in. The doll is beautiful, truly a historical moment for the sorority...I know I'll be buying one as soon as they are available.

    MochaDLight
OKAY forget that the doll is fair skinned, how many black girls have green eyes???? This is why black girls are so confused and they want to be something they're not. Instead of themselves simply because beauty is portrayed as this light skinned, green eyes, and long silky hair. Why she couldn't have a kinky fro with funky cool clothes and stuff. PLEASE!

Because MTO you know that’s just how we do it. That’s why! In my chapter there were only three brown tone women and they were beautiful but the majority of us were lighter skin and besides light is right I would hate to be a darker skin sister you bitches have issues. Oh and I don’t wear a weave either like most of you bald headed darker sisters and By the way while I am on the subject, if I see another dark skin sister with a red weave LMAO I am going to scream I think if your darker tone you should at least go natural but, that’s just my opinion.

All the AKA rejects sound so ignorant hating on my sorority. There are plenty of AKAs that are darker skinned, have short hair and are not a size 6.....myself included. Quit hating on what you don't understand. The doll looks the same tone as all the other black Barbies I had growing up. Furthermore, I know SEVERAL DSTs that fit the AKA "stereotype." It's all about finding which sorority fits your beliefs.
DST probably won't get a doll until THEIR centennial.....2013. This is AKA's year. Let us shine and when the others' time comes, we'll let them shine. Now, if DST's doll is darker skinned, then there will be something to talk about!

If this is the sorority doll, they should have made one doll with many different shades of black(light, brown, dark). This way it would be a good representation of the the sorority members.

    THAT DOLL IS MY COLOR!

MTO WHAT YOU NEED TO BE ASKING IS WHY ARE SO MANY OTHER DOLLS SO DARK? I'VE SEEN DOLLS THAT ARE THE COLOR OF LICORICE BUT THE AVERAGE BLACK WOMAN IS NOT THAT COLOR.

I THINK BLACK DOLLS COLOR SHOULD FALL IN THE MIDDLE. NOT TO LIGHT. NOT TO DARK. THAT WAY EVERYONE IS REPRESENTED AND SATISFIED.

AND THIS DOLL DOES JUST THAT.

ITS NOT YELLOW AS A PALE WHITE PERSON (WHICH SOME OF OUR BLACK PEOPLE ARE) OR DARK AS AN AFRICAN (WHICH SOME OF OUR BLACK PEOPLE ARE) IT'S SMACK IN THE MIDDLE.

    RedBonegirl:

Please stop pretending to be an AKA. No reall soror would say something that ignorant!

I am an AKA and I am dark skinned. It is no secret that AKA used to discriminate against darker skinned women, but that is something that young and immature women brought into being, and was not the vcision of our founders. We have since moved past that. The doll has a medium skin tone. She is not as dark as me, but not as light as some of my lighter skinned sorors. THe reality is that no matter what skin tone she was, she would not repretent all skin tones. I'm just happy that we have our own barbie doll, SKEE-WEE!

If Mattel is smart, they'll go after Delta Sigma Theta and give them their own doll as well.

I went to a HSBCU school and not for nothing, the AKA's on our yard were predominantly light-skinned women while the Deltas (who had the hottest chicks anyway) were darker complected.

And this was back in 1976!

But it is what it is --- I still say Mattel would make even more money if they offereed Delta their own doll as well because they'll sure sell a shyt-load of BOTH of 'em!

SKEEEEEWEEEEE!!!!! GREETINGS TO MY SORORS OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY INCORPORATED! IT'S OUR CENTENNIAL YEAR AND I AM SO HONORED TO HAVE A DOLL CREATED IN OUR HONOR! NOW.....Why are we making this an issue about complexion? YES i am a light skinned soror, BUT we are celebrating history. The first sorors were light skinned, so the doll should be light skinned. The FOUNDERS were that complexion, so the doll represents the foundation. What's so wrong with that? PLUS the doll isn't even that light. I'm sure there will be more AKA dolls of other complexions. Can the light skinned women have something? it's bad enough that women of our OWN race discriminate against us. AND we have to deal with discrimination from whites as well. If any brown skinned woman thinks we have it easier...you are 100% wrong! We get displayed as boppers and whores in the industry, so men who aren't in the industry catagorize us the same way. I myself am not a stuck up person, a bopper, or a whore, but I am stereotyped as all 3 just because of the way I look. I walk into a room and smile and speak to everyone and I get shunned. SO with that being said..... This doll is a great step for ALL African American sororities. Let's look at the bigger picture here. We're all sisters, like it or not and we need to start acting like it.

Last time I checked black people come in all shades. It is definetly the lighting in that photo, but she is a bit darker where you can TELL she is black. I give Barbie credit for making the doll. Because it's something they didn't HAVE to do. Over the years Barbie has always used the same MOLD for black and white Barbies, not too long ago Black Barbies started to have more features like a black person rather than a white person. Barbie gets kudos from me for trying.

My cousin is an AKA (alumni of Morgan State) and she is dark skinned...about the same complecion as Vanessa Williams (Soul Food THE SERIES). So I think that it's just stereotypical to think that all AKAs are light skinned.
Granted, they should have the doll come in all different shades, but it really ain't that serious for us to make a big deal about it! The doll is a representative of all black women...as black people, we do come in different shade, you know?

LOL; whatever MTO!:-) Haters are going to find something negative no matter what. Instead of giving props you say something negative hoping others will co-sign on that hate in an effort to overshadow the positive. Hater’s hate themselves so they hate on others; misery loves company. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don't. If she was darker, then she would have been too dark; blah blah blah.

AClassyOne: Fall back with the whole "community service crap" theory.

You obviously don't know how much goodwill is done by ALL of the Divine 9 Organizations, just because it isn't plastered across front page headlines or postered on MTO doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Plus you sound a lil salty anyways, did you get rejected by a sorority? Grades weren't good enough, not an upstanding young lady, or not capable of being sisterly, which of these describes you????
(yes, I'm greek for the record- Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, INC. Fall 2001)

Can't wait for a blue and gold doll, much respect AKA's!

Redbone IS NOT A SOROR! Boo, you are not the first imposter and won't be the last; please believe it. If you truly were an AKA you would know better and you would know that us REAL AKA’s would know an imposter so stop it! The "brown paper bag tests" is NOT what AKA is about people; most of you are going on what others have said so stop acting like you know it as fact. FYI- some of our founders are darker skinned sisters like Ethel Hedgeman Lyle so know what you speak on before you speak.

MTO, I hope you are happy. You have us on here going at each other and for what? The positive is overshadowed by the negative; mission accomplished. Once again, a positive thing is turned into something negative and more importantly, something irrelevant. And, it’s by our very own. I swear, sometimes we (blacks) are our worst enemies.

    cbloxie
Well all the AKA's at my college were dark-skinned, mean, and unattractive, so I never got to experience the "beautiful" AKA's that alot of people have mentioned to me. I really hope there are some humble, beautiful ones out there b/c the ones on my campus were evil and conceited, and had no business being either one. But to the ones not at my college...congrats on the doll!

I honestly would rather see this, than a stereotypical doll like the Obama one. That doll looked NOTHING like him. Plus like many of you have already stated, it is the belief that many AKA's are all light skinned. Although there are some dark skinned AKA's...that is the stereotype.

I'm sure not one single writer for MTO has ever been to anyone's college, so they are not aware that most AKA's are light-skinned.

Light-skinned meaning, black folks of a lighter hue, usually the preferred choice for centuries....not just in dating, but in life, on the job, more easily accepted by white folks, etc.

However, nothing strikes me more than the BLACK DOLL vs. WHITE DOLL test conducted way back in the day but sadly, our children learn young as seen in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWEXJ-Qd1uw

    So sad to me.

Before people pass judgement on AKA, please visit our website, you will find that we come in all shades. We've demolished the PAPER BAG stereotype, so drop it!! All you haters get a life! The doll is beautiful, can't we just be proud to celebrate the first African American Sorority Barbie Doll. D*mn, we've been in existence since 1908 and we finally got a doll with Mattel. The light skin AKA/dark skin Delta stereotype has been out there for ages...Although anyone who has been on a college campus has met sistas who defy it..

Instead of trying to race bait MTO how about just giving props to AKA and the many women who have crossed the sands into their sorority and the great work they have done...Hopefully Mattell brings Delta/Zeta/SGRho dolls out as well and shows the whole spectrum of our greek sistas...

    @msmetro24:

Paper is a term used to identify a Greek fraternity or sorority member who didn't pledge. This
person became a member through either an intake process, or by joining a graduate/alumni
chapter. Real is a term used to identify those persons who underwent the pledge process. During
the pledge period they learn rituals, secrets, history, and tests of brotherhood & sisterhood through
the teachings of the dean of pledging. *please note: "paper" is also a term of disrespect and
warrants trouble when thrusted upon the identity of someone who considers themselves "real".

Legacy - The son, daughter or brother or sister of an initiated or alum member. Some organizations also include grandchildren or step children. Sorority rules sometimes dictate she cannot be cut from the first round of parties, but in no way are legacies guaranteed a bid from the organization they are a legacy to.

AKA's have always prided themselves on recruiting LIGHT-SKINNED,LONG-HAIRED females as if that is THE definition of black beauty.

As a college grad, I never had the urge to pledge this sorority because I felt these young ladies were way too focused on that image and quite honestly seemed too vain and conceited for my tastes.

Joining them was about being the cutest, flyest on campus but I never really heard of them doing anything to help the community.

They were kicked off my college campus in '92 for asking pledges to perform a sexual act on one another and weren't reinstated until '98 I believe (a year after I graduated).

Somehow I am not surprised with this Barbie doll and won't be doing anything to support this group for I don't really know what kind of message they are trying to send.

@TitanAthleticsInc... Too bad you haven’t seen this Sexy Sigma Gamma Rho!!!

@esotericdredz... Thanks for giving Props to all SoRhorities, some people seem to think there are only two. In 1922 Greatness was finally founded and it will never be forgotten.

Everyone always assumes I am an AKA, but that's not the place where my heart lead me. I know the reason has a lot to do with my skin color and the way I carry myself, but those people to me are just blind sided. All SoRhorities come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the most beautiful women I've ever met are SGRho's... Today is a changing world and people think differently.

I want people to know about the difference I can make in today's community and that's really what the stereotypes should be for All BGLOs!! How we constantly give back to the community.

So I don’t hate and will not stereotype any SoRhority. There are thousands of chapters of women, but people fail to realize what's truly important. The Quality of the Organization!! My Motto: I make my SoRhority, my SoRhority doesn't make me.

Much love to all my SoRhors in the world!! EEE-Yippp!!!

I am a member of DST, and I have noticed over the years that many people associate the members of AKA with the "light-skin, long-hair" schema. As a person who fits that description- I was questioned a lot on why I joined DST and not AKA- and it really comes down to values. Yes- AKAs do tend to be light-skinned, but I have seen them in different shapes, sizes, colors, creeds and everything else. Just as I have noticed an influx of lighter-complexions joining DST and ZPhiB. In the end, we are all black, we are all greek, and we are all sisters. So even if they released a much darker DST doll- there would be some lighter skinned DSTs, (like I), who would technically be able to say: "that doesn't represent me." I'm just happy that Mattel is representing for the black Greek letter organizations.

Now whats going on with Mattel getting me a DST doll?

@ BUTTABABY...Thanks for understanding where I'm coming from. Your daughter is very lucky because she won't have it as hard as we did. Am I wrong for always hoping that if i ever have a girl she will be the same complexion as your daughter? Of course I love my complexion, but you never want to see your kids go through the bad things you went through...even though we are stronger because of it. Plus whatever shade she is (if I ever have one), I will prepare her for whatever because society and division in the black community is getting worse and worse It's like if you're light skinned you have to PROVE that you aren't stuck up or PROVE you arent this way or that way. And if you're like me and refuse to prove anything to anyone then you're labeled. But if you're more of a brown complexion then you're automatically accepted. I still got love for all my sisters, sorors and beautiful black women of every shade.

BTW, stop with the foolishness. Light skin is pushed on us IN THIS COUNTRY because light skin was always associated with disease and sickness and looked upon as unattractive. We live in a society of people who know this and have had to work hard to reverse that stigma..in the process they have tried to alienate other complexions in favor of their own but that doesn't mean that the skin color is actually better or somehow makes products better.

I do feel it's a damned shame that women especially black women can be so hateful to ourselves. We are all black and we come in all shades. I am brown skinned and my mama is light. I've heard her say some of the things ya'll have said and it's a damned shame. She has even told me before that when she was growing up she wished she was my complexion, which is partly why she only dated dark skined men so that her daughters would have more color. She loves herself, she is a beautiful confident woman but of course gets hated on, has been hated on her entire life. But beatiful women of all shades get hated on, whether it's because of your skin tone or hair texture/length. I've always been hated on because I have long hair. I have a medium skin tone but I've been hated on by darker skinned girls and lighter skinned girls who don't have any hair. Basically what it boils down to is that we as women need to stop the hate and realize that we are all in this together. Beauty comes in all forms, short hair, long hair, dark skin, light skin and every tone in between. We are all beautiful and look exactly as we were meant to look.
Oh, and the doll is beautiful. She's not light skinned, not that there would be anything wrong with her being light. But people need to stop the petty ish and keep it moving.

DUH because 99.9% of the AKA is light-skinned with long, straight, hair and green eyes. I love what they do and what they stand for as far as "empowering" black women, but if they want to disprove this stereotype, they know where to start. And this is even the older members of the AKA (cuz I know quite a few). They're lighter than a brown paper bag with colored eyes.

But the doll does look ethnic in the face. I'm not hatin cuz I too am considered light-skinned (but my eyes are brown, and my hair is nappy), but how are they empowering black women when most of the chapters are so SELECTIVE about their members?

I'm not a big fan of being in a Greek sorority, simply due to it's history of discriminating against darker skinned blacks,by having the whole paper bag test and those who were of a lower class.

Of course the sororities eventually began to open its doors to more black people, but it definitely had nothing to do with the whole "We All Are One" attitude. They opened their doors to more blacks because they needed more money to upkeep the black greek organization. Don't believe me? You don't have to, but it does make sense if you look at it. I read an article in a 1930 or 1940 newpaper, saying that they needed more funds, which required more members, so hat's when they opened their doors to more blacks.

One of my dorm mates was dark skin and pledged AKA and she accepted. However I still saw a lot more lightskin black in AKA, but then I saw a lot more in Delta Sigmma Theta too. Maybe it has to do with the State I'm living in *shugs shoulder*.

Ok lets be real people...black barbie (other than celebrity barbie's) has always come in one shade of brown. Now all of a sudden they lighten her up because shes an AKA...thats not a coincidence, or celebration of our different shades. Thats a conscious choice to play off of a stereotype of AKA's.

Realwoman's comment doesn't imply that she has never read a Bible before. As she stated, light skin is "marketed" to Black people in the mainstream media as being more "desirable" and more "attractive" though a lot of people would beg to differ. A lot of white people have a preference towards dating light skinned Black people because they feel better able to "relate" to that person because of the "likenesses" in their appearances. It's dumb, because you could sound like Mushmouth, but you're light, Jaheim, so Becky will date you. It doesn't make sense but that's what it is.

You quoting the Bible and referencing white skin and blonde hair makes me think of albinism. That was my recollection of "the curse" you're referring to. I am going to have to get back to you on that.

    To the AKAs of MTO:

Being a young woman who is younger in appearance than age, I notice how little girls and even little boys look at me. I notice the admiration in their eyes when I wave at them, smile at them and speak to them. Children crave love, attention and ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

With that stated, why wouldn't AKA demand that, if Mattel moves forward with an AKA Barbie, they make an all-inclusive series -- Barbie in 3 different shades, so each young girl who is given an AKA Barbie can see an image of herself in that doll. This doll could've been a blessing and encouragement to little Black (Latin and Asian) girls to study and work hard in school, earn good grades and when the time comes, apply for acceptance and scholarships/grants to colleges and universities so, one day, they can tell other children how much their AKA Barbie meant to them.

There are other nationalities and races of people in attendance at HBCUs and they may want to pledge AKA, Delta, Sigma or whatever else is available, and they may be as great of an asset or more than a Black pledge. Beside the fact that you could've made much more money marketing a Barbie in 3 shades to the public, more girls would've been able to see a future of sorts in that doll.

It's just something to think about.

Hmm so black Greeks are bogus and not about black people as a whole, hmmm?....

I think if you look at the Civil Rights movement, as well as black men and women who are leaders today, they are overwhelmingly reppin' the Divine 9.

Black greeks might have their own organizations, but at the end of the day we are all black, light to dark, and its about unity and support of black people as a whole. I think a lot of non-Greeks get so caught up in stereotypes of greeks that they miss that.

Seriously, how can you look at Martin Luther King, Thurghood Marshall, Maya Angelou, Shirley Chisolm, Jesse Jackson, Carter G. Woodson, Huey P. Newton...just to name a very select few....and say that they weren't down for black people as a whole? Hell, they advocated for better conditions and lives for ALL black folks...

Oldest black sorority to meet and Greek Barbie

    July 7, 2008

    BY CHERYL V. JACKSON cjackson@suntimes.com
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority really know how to get dolled up -- and focus on business.

They'll show that this week when they hit Washington, D.C., about 35,000 strong, for their biennial convention and get a look at one of their newest members: Barbie.

Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority. The doll honors the Chicago-headquartered sorority, the first Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition AKA Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority.

The AKA Barbie has some company. Another business, the Sisterhood Boutique, last year modeled a collectible doll on the sorority. That creation, the $125 Ivy Rose (www.sister hoodboutique.com), made its way into official gift bags for celebrity presenters at the Grammy Awards in February.

The Mattel doll will sell for $50 through the Barbie Collector catalog, the Barbie Collector.com Web site and retailers. The sorority gets a percentage of the sales.

Mattel isn't the only company eager to work with AKA. Among the sorority's other recent corporate deals:

    • Converse has designed shoes for Alpha Kappa Alpha and five other black Greek-letter organizations and will sponsor a march at the AKA convention.

    • Chase last year gave AKA more than $100,000 to support an African-American home ownership initiative.

    • DNA tracing firm African Ancestry Inc. has partnered with the group.

The sorority expects its members to drop more than $100 million in Washington during the weeklong convention, which kicks off Friday.

I highly doubt that anyone on this website is trying to take anything away from MLK, Thurgood Marshall, Maya Angelou or the host of other influential men and women you mentioned. The real issue is a BLACK person wanting to be GREEK!!! Wearing these letters so proudly and even tatooing it and branding it onto their skin... This is a twist because there was a time in history when the GREEKS wanted to be us so to speak. They used to make frequent trips to Kemet (KMT)-(The Black Land or The Black People) which is now known as Egypt to learn MATHEMATICS, ASTROLOGY, AND RELIGION just to name a few. We were the MASTER TEACHERS... Its sad because some of these same BLACK GREEKS will deny their African roots but will be so quick to let someone know they are a member of one of these GREEK organizations. SMH...

CONGRATS AKA's!!!!! be proud. im plannin on joinin a sorority and after doin months of research i know what colors i wanna wear!! wish me luck and congrats again!

The doll is very pretty. This topic on color will never die. I dont think our community will ever get it together. regardless of whether we are all light skinned, dark-skinned, or brown skinned, we will all continue to hate on each other but in the eyes of some whites no matter what shade you are we are all still n!gger$. if the doll is too light then it would be seen as self hatred, if the doll was real dark-skinned then we would still hate because the doll is too dark. we do it to ourselves people. just look at videos, what girls do they cast as the main video models, hardly not even black anymore, they've moved on to latinos and even whites (not hating on either race). QUESTION? If the doll was for Delta Sigma Theta same complexion and everything, would this have even been an article on MTO? lol well probably yeah only because MTO stories are getting a little skimpy!!

The point here is, congratulations for 100 yrs of service.

Fellow greeks, wish them well. Ladies of DST, ZPB and SGR, you will get yours when your year comes.

Non-greeks, if you don't get it cool. But don't hate just because. My mom is an AKA, and she isn't light skinned with long hair. Don't do that pimp...

Think of it this way: if you met a regular mofo on the street and they told u in convo it was their birthday, you would say "happy birthday" and keep it moving. You wouldn't spend an hour telling him "you aint ish" and "so, I don't need your birthday. I got my own."

Wish them well and keep it moving.

MTO is some bull-ish for starting this dumb ass convo...

The issue that I keep seeing arise with regards to some Black Greek organizations is not a color divide as much as it is, "What are they really doing today?"

Esoteric, I get your point but how many of the people you named on your list of illustrious/historical Black Greeks are a) still alive and b) from our generation? I am by no means slighting the accomplishments of Shirley Chisholm, MLK, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, etc., because these people are as much a part of American history as they are Black history.

I'm sure you the Cedric "The Entertainer" joke/question, "How many brothas went to college just to pledge Q? You're a Q, but did ya graduate?" I think that comes to a lot of people's minds when discussions of Black Greek organizations come up.

@FENDIFIEND. WHEN BARBIE CAME OUT WITH FIRST BLACK BARBIE, SHE WAS CHOCOLATE. YOU DIDN'T SEE EVERY OTHER SHADE OF BLACK WOMAN GETTIN MAD DEMANDING A LIGHTER SHADE BARBIE. AND I BOUGHT THAT SAME CHOCOLATE BARBIE FOR MY DAUGHTER EVEN THO SHE AINT THAT DARK. THE AKA DOLL IS REPPING BLACK WOMEN IN GENERAL. THERE R SO MANY DIFFERENT SHADES OF BLACK, THERE WILL NEVER B ENOUGH DOLLS TO REPRESENT EVERY SHADE. BUT AT LEAST IT REPRESENTS BLACK WOMEN IN GENERAL. ANOTHER THING IS THIS, IT IS OUR JOB AS MOTHERS TO ENCOURAGE/INSIST OUR DAUGHTERS FINISH COLLEGE, ETC. THAT'S WHAT REALLY GIVES THEM HOPE, NOT A DOLL.

But honestly black people need to get over this color/shade stuff b/c its really getting old. People, this is ridiculous. This should not be a discussion. Our people have come a long way whether we were light skinned or dark skinned. This is a barrier in the African American community because of certain stereotypes. Being a proud member of this sorority, I don't think this was the intent of the creators of the doll let alone the founding members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc with the brown paper bag test as one of my sorors stated on here before.
    For msmetro24,
with the questions about paper and being made. To be technical sweetie, everyone is paper until they want their identity to be proven by another individual to have them "made". Your information still have to meet "paper" criteria to belong to any greek organization. With our people continuing to accomplish goals that were not presented to us during slavery and the civil rights movement, we should not debate on something so minor as the skin tone of a toy. Also, for I want to say what's up to all the greeks who posted a response in honor of our centennial and give a Pearlfect SKeeeee-Weeeee to my sorors. Happy 100th Birthday Alpha Kappa Alpha.

DAMN!! I did not know my comments would cause so much chaos. ANY way, I am just spitting the truth. First off, my family is a legacy of AKA”S. My cousin’s wedding colors are Pink and Green that's how much it has been indoctrinated in our blood. It has always been told that we were better because we were light and right and I am rolling with that; don’t get mad at me because that’s how it has been defined. Not be me but by many. So with that being said, I can be stupid and ignorant to all you bitches, but I am happy with me, my life, my skin color and my hair. HIGH FIVE IN THE 09!

    Ancienne
Being biracial, I grew up with my white family until I was 9. It wasn't until exposure to my black family that I knew there was a such thing as light skinned and dark skinned, good hair and bad hair. To white people, blacks are black with kinky hair, no matter what they look like. After nine years of my white relatives not wanting or knowing how to comb my hair, I suddenly had my black relatives saying I had good hair. In college, I decided I would pledge Delta, and a friend said, "You better take your yellow ass over to the AKAs." I was livid and was determined to pledge Delta just for spite. Eventually, I refused to pledge at all. There is a long history to the whole light skinned dark skinned thing. We didn't start this ourselves (if you know what I mean), but it is within our power to end it. At 42, there's one thing I know: black Americans, descendents of slaves, have a history like none other, have overcome like none other, are survivors like none other, and we could change the world like none other. But we never will until we unite like none other. P.S. I think the doll is drop-dead gorgeous no matter what complexion she is.

    mzarrogance

    @BUTTABABY:

First off, typing in all caps = yelling. Second, you stated that when Black Barbies first came out you bought your daughter one. That has to be at least 20 years ago, probably longer, because I have old Barbies from the 1960's that belonged to an aunt of mine, and if I recall correctly, she had one or 2 Barbies that weren't white in her collection. (The Black Barbies may have been circa the 1970's.) As you and I are both well aware, technology has changed and Mattel has definitely made Barbie dolls in a multitude of colors, so why would it be any different in the case of the AKA doll? I stated it as a thought and RESPECTFULLY solicited the opinions of AKAs, none of who(m) cared to respond.

I watched Kimora's show on the Style Network when she had to deal with reps from Mattel who wanted to compromise the quality of the doll. She wasn't having it. People talk crap about Kimora, but we have to fight three times as hard as minorities because if we don't, our images will be completely distorted and presented to the general public as "accurate" and anything that is supposed to look like us will end up looking more like that German's rendition of Barack Obama in doll form that MTO showed last week.

Since we come in so many different shapes, sizes and colors, it would've been seemingly more fitting for Mattel to do a HBCU line of Barbies.
      ---------------

MTO are devils in disguise. They don't give a damn about the doll being too light, they just wanna see some sh*t pop off between their viewers. Hollerin' about but we're not trying to start no mess. STFU wit y'all sh*t starting asses. You know good well this is a sensitive subject.

    esotericdredz
@ Fendi, with any organization, you have your members who don't "get it"....Still when you look at blacks who have made a major impact on both black and American history, Black greeks are at the center...

That list was just a little cross section to make a point....Even when you look at our generation, Black greeks are still making things happen...Looking at my frat alone, APhi itself has 8 cats in congress right now, cats like Cornell West doing it in academia, and plenty more reppin' in law, medicine, etc.

All I am saying is, people look at greeks as these elitist little cliques that do step shows, when in reality Greeks have always and remain at the center of black leadership.

    @esotericdredz:

I feel you and the accomplishments of your fraternity/brothers. I love Cornell West, are you serious?!. LOL.

What a lot of "outsiders" see are (bits and pieces of) the pledging process and stepping, but in my opinion, it's really not a bad thing to have your name/your organization's name associated with philanthropy, especially when you do a lot for the community. I know it may appear immodest to "broadcast" the fact that you're building homes for low income people, feeding the homeless or things of that nature, but some people, like myself, wanted to see more before I made my decision not to pledge, and unfortunately, I saw little more than girls on line and stepping and I was not impressed.

You are a better rep from Greeks than any of the females I solicited opinions from on here. Thank you for your candor.

My sister in law is dark skin and she is a beautiful girl but, I am sure like many of you darkies she have had issues with accepting her skin color. The only difference with me is I did not. And yeah, I am that girl who would tease the dark skin nappy headed girls because... I could. Now don’t get me wrong, I have seen some banging ass dark skin sisters for sure but you ho's come a dime a dozen. BY the way I am very proud to be black but I would rather be a lighter skin black just as I am. And for the record if my daughter comes out dark skin which is virtually impossible. Stop being so sensitive and defensive because you could have ignored the story all together. And where do you get off telling people what or what not to do? AKA'S are primarily light skinned and even you know that. It is the general rule rather than the exception and there is a message there. I personally know AKA'S that are not light skinned as well. I will by one as a collectors item.

As some have mentioned, I've always thought that AKA's where a predominantly light skinned sorority. At least that's how it was when I attended college 10 years ago. And the Zetas were predominantly dark.

And as to this statement: And to all the proud AKAs out there - we're not trying to start no mess. But somebody had to ask the question ....<<<<-----And it had to be MTO to ask huh? Schitt starters. By the way the doll is pretty, and skin color is not the factor.

Why do you all keep responding to RedBonegirl she is obviously NOT a black women, that person is just trying to get yall posting....

Another thing I think it's a great idea for the barbie to be caramel colored...for years all black barbies have been chocolate brown, which nearly 50% of most black women cannot relate too, theres nothing wrong with Matell showing that black women come in all colors of the spectrum. Please people we all know that Chocolate brown is beautiful, can we show that caramel brown is beautiful also...whats the big deal, please stop the anger against lighter black people its getting real old!

    @MISSANN:

Black people not sticking together is not a generalization of all Black people, but more of a crabs in a barrel situation. Some Black folks feel as though, and are conditioned to believe, that in order to "rise to the top," they have to trample over anyone and everyone to get there. The number of Black people at the top of the "food chain" so-to-speak is highly disproportionate to the number of whites at the top of the food chain so we sometimes find ourselves stepping over or on other Black counterparts when white people appear to pull each other up. (The term "thick as thieves" comes to mind.) As such, there are some, not all Black people who, for whatever reason, feel they have to stick the next brotha or sista in the name of "getting ahead." This isn't an all inclusive scenario, but just one situation of what goes on in Black communities everywhere, rich or poor, "good" or "bad" on a daily basis, personally and professionally.

Rather than you making a false assumption about the type of man 2KONCEITED4U1911 is, do you check your brothas and sistas when you see or hear them disrespecting another person of color for no "justifiable" reason? When we take responsibility not only for our actions, but when we learn that we need to check each other in a respectful manner when we see a brotha or sista doing a disservice to another brotha or sista, THEN we can get upset if our efforts are thwarted/unsuccessful.

Seriously, MediaTakeOut. Seriously? As a black woman (who just happens to be Alpha Kappa Alpha), I am once again disappointed in your inability to celebrate black achievement. This story should not have even addressed skin color. I mean, Mattel has created a doll that celebrates a historically black sorority, and you are questioning her complexion?! It's organizations like yours that may very well have mainstream companies scared to even "go there" with us in fear of offending someone. Celebrate the obvious and stop pulling the race card! DANG!

Ok seriously people this is why we as African Americans, have a hard time getting included in things. The damn doll isn't out yet and already people are complaining and bickering. It would be nice to make the dolls in all complexions to represent all African American women but think about it from a marketing/logical standpoint, where is the line drawn on the number of different skin tones? Do we include a doll for albinos? How many dolls of each skin tone will sell versus just having one doll which is a guaranteed to sell by virtue of being what it is? At the end of the day it's about making money and while all that multi-tonal crap may appeal to our sense of fairness, it's just another way to hinder the production of dolls for all of the black sororities. It goes from being a positive step forward to a big hassle that causes too many complications, and negative press.
Let it go people! The doll is beautiful, she's made up neatly and doesn't have that garrish whore look all my black Barbies had. The doll was done with class and taste.
As far as complexion goes if you stood my mother and her 6 siblings in a line you'd see every possible color in the spectrum so give Mattel a break, they're trying to do right. Accept the honor, be proud, be supportive, and try a little humility. Thank you Mattel, Here's hoping this is the start of something wonderful.
FYI I'm not Greek affiliated, just adding my two cents.

@FENDIFIEND, I'm talking about maybe 8/9 years ago when I was buying black barbies for my girl, I didn't see any shades of black other than chocolate. Maybe a few years after that, I saw lighter ones. That's when I found a doll that resembled her tone. But I still don't see any high yellow barbies. Not that it bothers me. I type in all caps sometimes and didn't know it was considered yelling. Didn't mean to offend u. Be blessed.

I was honored to be a presenter of a My Heart Beats AKA for the Centennial Founder's Day Celebration and assist with keeping Hon. Soror Elyse Whytes speech anchored while this great sooul and the oldest living member of the Tau Omega Chapter, (RIP, she left us soon after) read her very own words she wrote. I now have that sppech in my possession which holds the history of the oldest Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter which I meant to say in a video homage to the event on YOUTUBE under Heather Covington, but was viciously attacked for the mistake rather than folks hearing the message. I think the message is loud and clear here. MATTEL, INC. has recognized AKA and this is a tremendous landmark in the sororities history. I am in tears because as a child I always wanted a Barbie Doll of color and today young girls not only can obtain one as a collector's item, but celebrate the phenomenal achievements of the sorority my mother and I are members of. The ladies go out of their way to help and support others. The organization receives backlash for unrelated incidences of impressionable non-sorority members, but never gets the recognition its hard working members deserve. For an organization to have 200,000 members is a phenom and I know what kindof work it takes. I am proud of all Greeks and it would be nice for positive messages to accrue in the thousands in support of these beautiful ladies in all shades. I am not offended by the shade of doll chose because if you look at a black woman's hands and soles of her feet, she is as pale as white skin and so her body encompasses all colors of brown. The doll would be astronomically high to add sienna reds. It would either work best economical wise to be fair or very dark and either way ignorant folks are going to get offended. You can't please everyone anyways. I am not even fair skin and folks have insulted me and called me a black Barbie doll my whole life because of my hair length, but now I am no longer insulted. The AKA's have their own Barbie Doll. It's time to celebrate. Can I get some love up in here from my GREEKS from all sororities and fraternities. If the turn out in sales is grand I am sure MATTEL, INC. may just very well start a line of Greek Dolls. Say it is going to happen or am I out of line. And even if I am, be careful what you say and don't use your real name. This is not a Wendy Interview and I will hunt you down. LOL! Peace!

I have something to say to ANYONE and EVERYONE who thinks that us calling ourselves "Black Greeks" is "ignorant:"

    1. Due to the proximity of their countries to Africa, Grecieans and Italians are the closest to African decent of any European culture. Read a book.

    2. If you have a Bible scripture, a Asian symbol, or anything written in ENGLISH, you then, by someone's definition earlier, "are representing someone elses culture." If members of the Divine 9 choose to get brands and tats of something that represents what we believe in, who the hell are you to judge.

    3. The history and advances of African people have been taken and stolen and shared for thousands of years, including by the Greeks. But that is no reason not to recognize the Greek achievements in philosophy and government just because your own culture is stolen....

But if an Irish kid or a French Kid pledges a Greek fraternity, then by some "educated" people in here, that then makes an "ignorant" because he representing a "culture that isn't his own." WHAT EFFING SENSE DOES THAT MAKE?!

This entire thread, proves too things:

    1. We get in our own damn way to much to progress. We so damn happy Barack is gonna running for President, but most of us would be to busy hating on the man for being lightskinned to help his a/s/s.

    2. We all need to read more. Including myself....

The MTO staff that posted this is black. First off, the doll is pretty. It looks like any other black Barbie. I'm buying the Kimora Lee Barbie.
MTO staff posted this because it is known, AKA is a cult. And when I say cult, they brain wash all the women. Yes back in the day you had to be light bright close to white. And if your mom was one then your in. The dark skin AKAs are tokens. They were being exposed so they had to put one on. I think Angie Stone is one. It's a good look over all, regardless of what they stand for.

First off let me just congrats to the AKA's on their BEAUTIFUL African American Doll! Secondly, it hurts me to see the drama MTO has coughed up. I plan to one day pledge a sorority whether it be "real" or "paper" I'll still have the letters and be grateful during the process and I'll do my part but first and for most let it be known that when you go b4 God, He could care less what GREEK you've pledged as long as you served Him properly in doing so. . .this means thru (words, hurt, harm or danger) that you've not layed upon anyone during your time here on earth. The color factor will always be a deal bcuz we're BLACK period! She's just a doll, it won't get your bills paid at the end of the day. I'm voting 4 Obama but I'm almost afraid of him being in that position bcuz of how ignorant some of you acted 2day So, really this topic MTO was irrelevant, right?

@REDBONE----I love you bcuz the God I serve created you. . .but I dislike the simple-minded mind frame that you've been dished out from your very uneducated ancestors (if that may be the case) anywho. . .the child that your carrying feeds off of your hate and yes luv it is "hate!" An trust and beleive that the day will come when your baby will turn around and do and say some of the things that you've displayed here 2day and all you'll be able to do is look just like what you are, again. . .simple-minded! I pray for and the baby, ur hubby (if he exists) and your family (if they even acknowledge you)and your friend if she has to cosign off of your ill behavior. Oh, and my pic is posted. Don't hate on God's GIFTED CREATION and don't underestimate the computer. . .you can be located!!!!

Again, congrats to the AKA's. You have to praise God simply because of whom He is. Peace. BUDRFLI.

First of all, The Doll Is Beautiful!!
Now, Mrs. RedBoneGirl, it's obvious to the average intellect that you are a PHANTOM. I say this because as 'bout it as you are trying to make us BELIEVE, (rich hubby, care free life, etc.), you would have the time, desire nor need to post such inflammatory comments.
I mean, all the well-to-do women I know don't even frequent these types of sites! Their lives are full of enough problems ($$) to last a life time.
If in the event you ARE an actual person, who's pregers by your "BIG, BLACK HUSBAND", just remember that genes fall where they choose. Regardless of the fact that your mother, grand-mother and great-grand-mother may have been 'light, bright & damn near white', does not negate the 'one-drop' reality, not law or theory...REALITY. Gene patterns have had a reputation for changing at any given time. Your child may be created with the melanin & hair of your BLACKEST ancestor. (they go hand-in-hand) Remember this, ALWAYS!! No matter how light you are, if you lived in the slave times, you'd still be considered a NI@@A!! real talk. Although, you would probably be nothing but a concubine to your master, but still a NI@@A, none the less.
You may be light skinned with long & as you put it "real" hair, but that does not automatically qualify you as a PHYSICAL beauty. I've seen plenty of Dog-Faced, exotic looking women! lol! And it this is your case, I really feel for you! Its a bad deal to be physically UGLY as well as having an UGLYpersonality! Hopefully, your ugliness will be so overwhelming that it cancels out and you give birth to the most milk-chocolate, strikingly beautiful, baby girl who blossoms into a stunning, Afro-Asiatic type stallion that grows more beautiful as you age and decay.
Now don't be abusing her cuz she takes all your shine as she comes of age! Don't be jealous when she accomplishes all the goals you left to the wayside 'cause you were so self- absorbed.
Remember that "The Blacker The Berry, The SWEETER The Juice & The Darker The Flesh man, The Deeper The Root"!! -Tupac Shakur
Oh yeah, have you ever heard the saying that,
"Empty Cans Make The MOST Noise"?
Dismiss yourself, Mrs. RedBoneGirl. This is not a good look.

My thoughts exactly! You can tell by the grammar and sentence structure in her posts that she is not an educated woman. Class of 2000? A GED class maybe. Additionally, there is no way possible to predict your daughter's complexion, my light skinned sister, aunt, as well as my very own mother can attest to that fact! I agree with you on one thing..all black women should lay off the weave and relaxers. I for one am chemical free and weave free. Do yourself a favor and try to educate your daughter. In the past, skin color was a factor in the dating game in the black community; but from what I can see men are using the dark sisters, the light sisters, and the damn near white sisters.
Tip of the Day: Learn to read, write, and spell sister.

I get both parties trying to hit on me..if your beautiful, your beautiful! Complexion does not matter..its all about the features!! Great example..do you think that Solange is as pretty as Beyonce?? Or Solange looks better then Latoya Luckett of Keyy Washington b/c she's lighter..yes, perfect example!! I think not!! Ita all about your features and your personality at the end of the night!! Wow... I think we have forgotten whats important here... This post was designed to recognize a significant achievement for the first and oldest black greek letter sorority. I think this is a great accomplishment not only for the AKA's but for the black race as a whole. So what if the doll is a lot lighter than what people expected. It is designed to give honor to a great organization. We need to stop tearing each other down and start by building up ourselves and our communities. If we dont, no one else is. Its a shame to see so much hate in this post against one another from our people. People can say what they want to say about Greek organizations but you shouldnt let that represent who you are. OH, BTW--MOST WOMEN WHO ARE 'REALLY' MARRIED, REFER TO THEIR PARTNERS IN NEARLY ALL OCCURANCES AS; "MY HUSBAND"...NOT, "MY MAN". DUH, GET IT TOGETHER. YOU'RE A HORRIBLE CON.
AND WHAT YOU SEE ON MY HEAD IS CALLED A "STRAW SET" (cuz i do agree that tracks is wack!!)

AND YUP!---I AM ALL PERMED UP, CAUSE I GOT SOME KINKY AZZ HAIR & ALOT OF IT! & I LIKE TO DO ALOTA DIFFERENT SHYT TO IT. so what?
A REAL WOMAN DOES NOT MEASURE HER WORTH BY THE LENGTH OR TEXTURE OF HER HAIR OR THE COLOUR OF HER SKIN. SHE IS MEASURED BY HER CAPACITY TO LOVE. HER PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. HER TONGUE IS NURTURING & NOT WICKED.

My chocolate gurlz---Don't fret over this appearant dullard. This has been going on since the beginning of time. The love of Solomon, the King's life was a DARK chick. She was scorned by her own brother's and sisters because she was so black, and made her work in the vinyard!
    Check it; Song of Solomon 1;
    Dark am I, yet lovely,
    O daughters of Jerusalem,
dark like the tents of Kedar,
like the tent curtains of Solomon. [c]

6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because I am darkened by the sun.
My mother's sons were angry with me
    and made me take care of the vineyards;
my own vineyard I have neglected.

7 Tell me, you whom I love, where you graze your flock
and where you rest your sheep at midday.
Why should I be like a veiled woman
beside the flocks of your friends?"

    See, she thinks that he's ashamed of her because of her complexion, right? But check this, Solomon comes right back and explains to her;

" 8 If you do not know, MOST BEAUTIFUL of women,
follow the tracks of the sheep
    and graze your young goats
by the tents of the shepherds.
    Lover
9 I liken you, my darling, to a mare
harnessed to one of the chariots of Pharaoh.
10 Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings,
your neck with strings of jewels.

11 We will make you earrings of gold,
    studded with silver.

    ...AND THEN SHE COMES BACK LIKE;

    "Beloved
12 While the king was at his table,
    my perfume spread its fragrance.
13 My lover is to me a sachet of myrrh
    resting between my breasts.

14 My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms
from the vineyards of En Gedi."

    ...THEN HE COME RIGHT BACK LIKE;
    "Lover
15 How beautiful you are, my darling!
    Oh, how beautiful!
    Your eyes are doves."

He's basically saying, "I WANT YOU COVERED UP AROUND MY FRIENDS CAUSE you SO BEAUTIFUL (not just 'pretty') THESE FIGGAS MY TRY TO KILL ME TO GET AT YOU! YOU DIDN'T KNOW?" -real talk

(dang, that was real romantic stuff!)

    But forreal,
Aye, are you REALLY angry at dark-skinned women because your "man" left you for a cocoa-puff, maybe? What's the real deal gurl? Let's stop the hate, and start the HEALING.

@ YourBrainMyToy- Do you have any tattoos in English? Do you speak english (obviously you do, you managed use the England's language to post a message), do you have a Playstation? Ever eat a pizza?

Well then genius, you have "stolen" something from another culture. You need to memorize swahili or some ish, move back to Africa and renounce your education, you name and change everything you ever knew. Are you ready to do that?!

Let me remind you of something: EVERYONE IN THE WORLD IS DECENDED FROM AFRICA. Therefore, the term "black Greek" is an oxymoron, because they are genetically related to us.

The differences are cultural, and as we know (though you don't seem to), a large part of their culture came from us. In a roundabout (very roundabout) way, its us taking something that was stolen from us and embracing the positive aspects of it and taking it back.

Why don't you try embracing knowledge instead of that cop-out "oppressor ish"

Hell, you probably married to that dumb a/s/s broad redbonegirl...

Another example when a lighter women is with a darker guys many times they say the guy makes comments like" do you think you are all that because you are light", I feel like, can they help what they are. And the same when you see a light couple together, comments are" I have never seen a light couple together. Blacks are the most divided people, it is a disgrace. Get it together. Love yourself and love who you want to love, don't let haters get to you.

    1. I dont think it takes reading a book for anyone to know that Italy and Greece are close to Northern Africa. Some European scholars even like to deny that Egypt and other parts of North Africa are in fact apart of the vast continent. Anywho I never heard of any intermixing between the Africans with Greeks or Italians. I will in fact research this. However I do know for a fact that the Moors from Africa occupied Spain for about 400 years or so and there was some intermixing there. Food for thought.

2.Yes unfortunately as a person indigenous to Africa I am here in the United States of Amerikkka and yes I am typing in American English. Definitley not my choice. Last time I checked my ancestors were kidnapped from Western Africa and spread out across the Americas and the Caribbean. This is the very reason why we as Africans dont know our language ,god or nothing about our people. If the members of the Dillusional 9 want to get tats and brands you damn right thats their business just like my opinion about it is my business.

    3. Look at you defending your GREEKDOM... Oh how you worked so hard for this and how dare anyone disrespect it! This is truly sad! Their achievements (surely not all but plenty)were in fact orignial ideologies, concepts and theories of the people of Ancient KMT. Talk about plagiarism. Nobody is trying to sit around and bash or take anything away from the Greeks but I find it disgusting how many people dont know the greatness that has come out of Africa but want to boast about Greeks and their achievements as if they are really Greek. We gave this gift of greatness to the real Greeks. Our culture wasnt just stolen our entire HISTORY was stolen. You so called Greeks sit and study so damn hard the history of your organization and the greek alphabet and all this other nonsense yet you dont know sh!t about your own history. SMH... Thats what the white supremacy system does to your brain. Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery none but ourselves can free our minds!

4.If an Irish or French Kid wants to pledge a Greek fraternity yes they are representing another culture yet they have one key thing in common. They dont produce any melanin which makes them WHITE. They still can identify with each other because of their skin color. The very reason why Black Greek Letter organizations were established was because they were not accepted into the white GREEK fraternities or sororities. So they duplicated their own and tried to be as much like the other Greeks as possible.

One more thing you have bad seeds in every organization. Nobody is perfect, so for the other organizations making negative statements, let's take a closer look at your's and the skeletons in it. No sorority is perfect, but it is for the betterment of US. So don't look at redbone as what AKA stands for. Just do what is best for you.

I think you should take it as a compliment that you were called a genius. I mean the idea of an African sorority or fraternity for Africans over a Greek one is pure genius. Instead of learning the Greek alphabet we would be learning the alphabet and possibly the language of an African country. I mean it is more logical. But who wants to be logical anymore. Not a damn person on this site.

    1. The migration of the people of Africa to other parts of the world is what led to the what we have today. Africans "discovered" most of the world way before anyone ever decided to write it down. That's how the Moors got to Spain.

    2. Slavery wasn't a choice. We got f**ked. But we were sold into slavery by our own people, and a system of slavery existed well before Columbus stole America. (and before I continue, let me say this in bold letters: I AM NO CONDONING SLAVERY). Difference is, their color made it possible for them to intergrate; ours didn't.

    3. If you think we are dilusional, fine. I respect your opinion. I am defending my organization and the 8 other ones like it. Or organizations may be named after Greek letters, but I defend the principals and beliefs they stand for. We still represent on thing: the upliftment of African-Americans in higher education by providing organizations to form strong relationships and foster growth and education in the black community. The name is not what is important, the work and relationships are.

    4. You speak of the Black Greeks conforming to the standard of using Greek letters instead African letters. The social climate of the early 1900's mandated that in order to change the climate of the time, you had to conform to the social norms of the time. Working within the established system allowed us a vehicle to CHANGE the system. Some of our greatest leaders came from "Black Greek" organizations. Where would we ALL be without them?

My main thing is this we just need to be happy they got a doll. I personally can't believe I let myself get dragged into this thread, but something about it pulled me in.

I respect your opinion though. You make good points.

You have been raised to believe (like so many of our ancestors who were raped by their slavemasters) that to be light-skinned is to be above your African counterparts. I remember when I attended Howard University in 1970, light-skinned women were considered the "Ideal Howard Woman". Then Homecoming came, and Miss Howard waw dark-skinned and sported an afro!! This news hit every paper in the South.....that is when things began to turn around and we sisters of a darker hue really began to take pride in ourselves. Before long, almost every "redbone" on campus was knotting her hair up, sporting afros and dashikis. What does that tell you?? You need to get your head out of your red ass and recognize that those days of "light being right" are over and done.....

This is in no way a retaliatory response, just trying to shed some light. Calling yourself a Black Greek is an oxymoron (like u said above). Reasons why:

    1. It’s true that Portugal and Spain are only separated from Africa by the Mediterranean Sea (the Middle East is separated from Africa by the Red Sea, even though a small land bridge still connects Israel and Egypt), but u don’t see them breaking their necks to try and be anything but Greek or Italian.

    2. Bible scriptures, Asian symbols, or anything written in English comes directly from Africa, if u know your history. The English language takes from Greek, Latin and Arabic languages which, in turn, took from African languages (numbers, Metu Neter – hieroglyphs, etc.).

    3. I don’t give credit for plagiarism. That’s like giving Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) credit for discovering America, a straight lie.

And if a French kid or Irish kid pledges a Greek fraternity that is being ignorant, but most of them know about their own culture, unlike many of us, so how many of them do u see doing so?

    @ your other comment:

Eatting pizza, speaking a certain language or getting a tattoo has nothing to do with stealing anything. Stealing means to take something unlawfully. I didn’t know u could eat pizza unlawfully if u paid for it or unlawfully take a tattoo, likewise.

What it all comes down to is we have to learn how to want to learn about ourselves. We so busy learning about everybody else’s culture that we have no time for our own.

Check out http://www.afrostyly.com and http://daghettotymz.com and check it out. There are more sites but these 2 will get u started.

    1. Incorrect. Moors took over Spain because of Gilbril Tarik. He was an African chief who converted to Islam when the Arabs invaded Morocco. He then became General of the Arab-Moorish army of Musa Ibn Nusair and was left in charge of Tangiers and was Governor of Maritania. He befriended Count Julian, Governor of Cueta, who encouraged him to invade Spain and during the second invasion of Spain(early to mid 700 A.D), he defeated King Roderick, thus beginning the Moorish rule of Spain until 1492.

    2. Slavery did exist in Africa long before the Europeans were ever thought of but the there are few similarities between the African system and the European system. Slavery in Africa consisted of paying back a debt. And often times, those who were slaves turned out to become kings in the very houses in which they were slaves. Europeans, on the other hand, used it to dehumanize. Even though this type of slavery was against English law, the Christian church supported. But this did not start with the enslavement of Africans; it started with the enslavement of other Europeans and Indians (Native Americans). They don’t like to tell u that Europeans also enslaved their own. African enslavement became more promising only after Europeans began to get their Maritime skills back and the trade between them and the Portuguese blew up. The two types of slaves the Europeans had were, 1. redemptioners – agreed servants who were paying back their passage debt and 2. Indentured or “Indented” – those who were pretty much like African slaves (can be whipped, etc.) but their children could not be born into it. Both of these types of slaves were kept for years but the difference was that Indentured slaves were bounded by contract.

    3. & 4. No need to go there. It’ll take too long to explain. But keep in mind, churches, community center groups and the like do these same things. And have you ever heard of Paul Cuffe, Martin Delany, Edward Blyden, Frederick Douglas, The Haitian Revolution. Read up on your own fam.

1.Yes the Africans did in fact come before Colombus and were in the Amercias years before he was. They came to Mexico aroud the 8th century B.C.E. and had a positive relationship with the Olmec people. This is evident from Olmec sculptures in Mexico that have the defined features of Africans. The reason the Moors conquered Spain so easily is because Morocco is damn near touching Spain.

2.Yes our own people did sell us into slavery and yes slavery did exist in Africa well before the Europeans came to Africa and decided they were going to use us for free labor. However the slavery in Africa was nothing like Euroepan slavery. The enslavement of Africans by the European was solely for financial gain. African slaves were more so indentured servants for other Africans. This wasn't a life long thing like slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean at the hands of the European. I dont understand what you mean by saying their color made it easy for them to integrate and ours didnt. Why would their color make it easy for them to integrate and not us. Where is this term integrate coming from? Integrate with whom?

    3. You are defending your organization as well as others which is cool but I just hope you are as passionate when and if defending or taking a stand for Africa (the motherland) which so many people love to ignore. The name of the organiztion is important because words are used as symbols and they are very powerful.

    4. Conformity is not a good thing all the time. Why are you conforming and to whose standards are you conforming? Make up your own standards instead of living up to society's. Ofcourse it happens but you lose a sense of self when you conform. People that conform lose touch with who they are and want to be something else.A person with no knowledge of their history is like a tree with no roots. I know some "Black Greeks" who can spit the same sh!t that I am saying. I have respect for them because yes they consider themselves "Greeks" yet they know they are African before they are "Greek" and they never forget that. Not even with a whole bunch of para on.They realize a piece of paper, a process and 3 Greek letters told them they were "Greek".They aknowledge their African roots and greatness way more than they aknowledge being Greek. Their black skin that they cant change is more powerful and important. I am proud of the many Africans that are in Greek organizations that have contributed so much positivity and upliftment for the black academic community just the Greeks but we as a people need to realize that we came from greatness. Our history didnt start as slaves in the Americas and the Caribbean like they tell us. Lets take it back to the basics and be the kings and queens that we are and love and embrace our HERITAGE AND HOMELAND WHICH IS AFRICA. If we do this we will love ourselves which in turn will stop all of this self-hatred we have going on that we express towards each other. We need unity thats what we need.

Very pretty doll. Also why the surprise? AKA's are 'typically' lighter in complexion. This is no plot to divide Black women. Traditionally AKA's looked a certain way and this doll represents the 'typical' AKA. Sure there are darker AKA women but that is not the majority or how the majority is perceived and dolls are made to be representative of their model.

Watch if they ever make a Delta doll, she will be darker for the same reasons.

I've seen plenty of responses, and this post has gone completely out of control. From us being light skinned, nappy headed, and so on and so forth. Women come in all colors, and as women we should first be proud with who we are. Secondly we should not put ourselves higher than we should. Redbonegirl really made us Blacks as well as AKA's look very "Snooty". I'm not an AKA,but will be soon. My mother is an AKA, and my sister is an AKA from the Beta Chapter. I have come in contact with alot fo AKA's, and they are very down to earth. I have met some snooty ones, but not like redbonegirl. You can be conceited to a certain extent. I'm not light, but i'm carmel, and I have long hair and it's not nappy. So therefore it dosn't matter what's your hair texture is like or your skin complextion, but it's about how you represent yourself. If she is an AKA it's terrible that she has to act that way. So what if your light skinned or have long hair. Your actually slapping God in face for saying that you hate black "Darkies". He made us black "Darkies" in his image. Also if you have to degrade others to make yourself look good you must feel pretty bad about yourself. Your husband "Brought" you a house? It's bought sweetie. Also if he loves you so much you should know his net worth, and what he brings home. To make you clearer it's his house. So that means if he we're to leave you today where would you stay? I truly believ you are some young woman who wants to make herslef look good. Any real women who wanted to make a valid point would make sure she is stating it correctly. You have so many typo's it's sad. I know a smart rich man doesn't want a dummy. I'm sure there's alot of women and men on here who are successful who doesn't have to brag. Your eight months pregnant, and have a rich husband? What are you doing wasting your time on here degrading people? Why are you bragging about your husband, a real woman brags about herself. I am engaged to my child's father, but I do have a plan for my life. If he was to leave me what would I fall back on. You don't depend on no man sweetie. My child's father makes 6 figures, but 6 figures doesn't mean your rich honey. We still have bills just like anyone else. I would describe myself as wealthy, because i'm no higher than anyone else. I'm never on mediatakeout, but today my sister was on, and I read redbonegirl comments, and they we're sad. It's not mean, it's not cruel, but it's sad to see someone who's black with the same roots as me degrade her people. If we we're back in slavery times she would be picking cotton right with us. It's time for us as Blacks to stand together. Another thing, since your life is so "Perfect" it's my husband bought us a home, and not a house. A house is just something that stands, but a home is a a real family stays in. Obviously you made all that you said up, and if you didn't you gave AKA's a bad look, but I still want to become an AKA, because the it's my legacy. How can you be forced in AKA? It's your life, and your decisions. Meaning that you are not a true Sorror if you never wanted to join the sorrority. I would hate to see how your baby would grow up thinking she is better than others. I know as for my child, and my child on the way. They will grow up accepting all, because everyone doesn't have to deal with your or like you. My children are no different from anyone else. My baby is redboned, and so is her dad, but that doesn't give her the right to curse our others, and say how others are nothing! It's sad that you are 8 months pregnant, and on the Internet cursing people out. When I was pregnant with my first I was resting, and not causing trouble. For the record all that you called everyone on here you called yourself.

Man I dont care what yall say, that doll should not have been made in that shade. This is really an insult but then again this was expected, look at the comments posted towards one another, self hate is black people's problem. This is just anothet light skinned vs dark skinned debate. Truth be told yellow bitches start looking old as hell around 30 any dayum wayz so why do they always think dark skinned chics are jealous?!

    Outkast1914
    @kcire10

I never claimed to be Greek. I am a member of a Black Greek Lettered organization. If anyone thought that, I apologize for not stating it more clearly.

But to your statement about the Moors in Spain: My only statement was that the Moors are decedents of African people. Arabian tribes are also decedents of African people. Point taken, but I think we are saying the same thing here.

I am well aware that the first languages, sciences and history all came from Africa. But my point is this: If those languages are all taken from African nations and languages, and if a lot of our African Culture was lost or destroyed during the rule of the French and British, shouldn’t we look at the cultures stole from us to find out more about ourselves, if nothing else because we can’t find anything about ourselves because it was taken?

I made mention of Columbus earlier. Records show in some places that African tribes have discovered the Eastern Hemisphere some 200 years before Columbus.

Again I know all about the Fredrick Douglas’ and Paul Caffes of our history. My point here is the modern Civil Rights Movement was formed and lead by members who were directly involved with The 9.

    @ GGB
I believe we just have 2 different views on conformity. By using the system to form the 9, it became a vehicle to change the system. By initially conforming to what was accepted, it provided the vehicle that lead to the birth of our greatest leaders.

I am always a black man first.Being Greek is something I am apart of. And as I am a black man, first and I have a love for my African history as well as my history in America. Somewhere in this, I guess ya’ll thought I some young kid who just loves stepping and party hops or something. Not the case. I take nothing away from our African history, but I also recognize the contributions that have been made in African-American history.

Look, I get what you are all saying about the whole greek letters, they stole from us. It’s fine if you think Frats and Sororities calling themselves “Black Greeks” is stupid. That is your prerogative. I just have a problem with those who attack an organization that manages to stay relevant and active for 100 years. Not saying either of you do, but that came out a lot in this thread.

I respect your both your points though.

1.The doll is beautiful and we should be happy that AKA has a beautiful doll to celebrate our anniversary! 06, 08--the others were a little late! I was made in 1984 in a single letter chapter(I pledged a whole semester and am one of the last of the old school pledging) and come from generations of AKA's and I am proud of the doll and do not feel it is a slam against darker women. AKA's come in all shades and races and this doll was picked as "compromise" color to appeal to the people who might want to buy the doll. Most black Barbies are this brown color and the doll has African features so why all the hate? True, she does not have an afro but neither do 80% of black women in the US according to many polls. Congratulate, not hate. I am aware of AKA's history but that is a thing of the past!

2.Please pay no attention to Redbone girl as she is not an AKA as she does not seem well educated in her posts as she has grammar problems, brags about her man and not her own accomplishments(all real sorors talk of their own achievements, not who they married) and she used a vulgarism to describe her husband's genitalia and says she is barefoot and pregnant in the house her husband "brought" her and misuses the term legacy--she is not an AKA. She is an ill educated and ignorant ghetto wannabe with color issues. Please ignore this woman--she is not a lady of class and education and service which is typical of AKA. Famous Aka's are people like Hazel OLeary, Coretta Scott King, etc--not trash like Redbone

3.to the GDI's that are saying we should not be Greek but should be African, etc. You do not know what you are talking about because you are not a black Greek. Most of our rituals, etc, hark back to Ancient Egyptian mysical societies that used Greek so the other Egyptians would not learn their secerets; Alpha Phi Alpha has the pharoh and Sphinx imagery for a reason. Our old ceremonies like "the burning sands", "crossing",the death march, etc refer to the Egyptian desert where these rituals originally occurred, people, not Greece. I will not say more than that without going into our secrets. That is also why black Greek pledging, initiation, etc is somewhat different than that of their white counterparts.

4.Most of our major black leaders were Greeks and MLK was an active Alpha until his death. Greeks do a lot of good and more black people need to evaluate what we do rather than our so called image. Peace.

Ok, Bad Reputation?!?! Are you serious? We are the first and the finest. Trust that no organization is without flaw. As far as stepping up or reputation- will the millions that we give in scholarships, the millions we gave and continue to give to Hurricane Katrina victims (please check out the June Sista2Sista magazine. My mother-the Central Regional Director- went to help build house with Habitat) as well as our other countless mentoring programs speak for themselves.
Lastly- pledging/hazing is against the law. We have a Membership Intake process and based on the criteria- your daughter may or may not qualify.

Education is everything. Please, people don't speak on what you know.

Also- as far as the brown paper bag test- please take a look at my founders pictures- clearly this is untrue, just a perpetuated myth.

“I never claimed to be Greek. I am a member of a Black Greek Lettered organization. If anyone thought that, I apologize for not stating it more clearly.”

***Point taken. To me, saying your a Black Greek is claiming to be just that (that’s what I hear from other frats and sorors I know). If not, I don’t think people would say so.

“But to your statement about the Moors in Spain: My only statement was that the Moors are decedents of African people. Arabian tribes are also decedents of African people. Point taken, but I think we are saying the same thing here.”

***All peoples originated from Africa, we know this. Point is I gave you that info to let u know how the Moors rule of Spain actually came about.

“I am well aware that the first languages, sciences and history all came from Africa. But my point is this: If those languages are all taken from African nations and languages, and if a lot of our African Culture was lost or destroyed during the rule of the French and British, shouldn’t we look at the cultures stole from us to find out more about ourselves, if nothing else because we can’t find anything about ourselves because it was taken?”

***That is the point of studying about your own culture is to learn about us and maybe learn the languages. The information is out there u just have to dig a little deeper to find it. That’s why I gave u those websites to check out. And actually, the Moorish invasion of the city of Songhay (West Africa or Western Sudan) was when the decline began(in 1591). When the Europeans came they figured the nothing of culture and grandeur could have been there so that was their basis for slavery.

“Again I know all about the Fredrick Douglas’ and Paul Caffes of our history. My point here is the modern Civil Rights Movement was formed and lead by members who were directly involved with The 9.”

***Civil rights just didn’t start with King, X, Evers, Parks, etc. My point is u should want to know where and why these ideas started. Everyone knows about Marcus Garvey but many may not know that the back-to-Africa movement started before him (Cuffe was one of the first during the late 18th century). That’s why I throw these people out there so WE can want to learn about ALL of our civil rights movements. And so many of you will know, the original 9 started with the original 1 – the Boule. Carter G. Woodson and W.E.B. Du Bois was a part of this. But because they were a part of the movement doesn’t make the Boule right when u find out the motives behind the organization. Like I said earlier, check out www.daghettotymz.com and learn about all these things. Dude that own the site used to be in a Black Greek Letter Fraternity.

"I have enjoyed the discussion though. Wish more people on here would try reason rather that just cursing at each other."

***I have also enjoyed this discussion but it still pains me when I see so many supposed educated, aware sisters and brothers resort to cursing and downgrading to try and get their point across. State your approval and/or disapproval(but be cordial and respectful) and keep it moving. Sometimes we will all agree to disagree and that's ok. No need to resort to finger-pointing and name-calling.

black folks need to quit lying to themselves and trying to be politically correct saying that they don't care about color.
according to these posts color does matter.

Congrats to the Lovely Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.! We (members of the D9) know how far you have come and what you continue to accomplish in the community. The doll is gorgeous no matter what shade of brown. Unfortunately people choose to pay attention to stereotypes but we know you all are so much more. Thanks for leading the way!

There are a couple here who have commented on us calling ourselves "Black Greeks." Actually it's non-members that often refer to us as such and it's okay because we know what they mean. The term "Black Greek" or "The Greeks" is really short for Black Greek Letter organizations (BGLO's) or Greek Letter organizations (GLO's). Since the beginning of Greek Letter Organizations in this country, all have followed in the tradition of using Greek letters and in some cases, language. This has NOTHING to do with adopting Greek ethnic culture in any way, shape, or form. Today, many fraternities and sororities use Greek letters, whether they are predominently White, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, Black, social, service, honors, religious, etc. Again, this has nothing to do with adopting Greek ethnic culture and we don't. If you do some research you'll find that all of the NPHC or BGLO's embrace their African heritage in some way or form thru their symbols, programs, and/or activities. Contrary to what some would like to believe, we do know who we are.

I would advise anyone making a comment here about things they really don't understand about the NPHC or BGLO's to read the literature that's out there or if you are in contact with members who have been in their organizations for years, ask them questions. Members are usually open to answering questions if they are approached in a respectful manner and if the questions are not offensive.

    Peace.

15 yr. Member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

AKA is not simply being given a Barbie doll for their 100th birthday. They partnered with Mattel to create something memorable for their membership in honor of their centennial year and this was most importantly a business move. Part of the proceeds go to the sorority and any monies that go to the sorority will no doubt go to aid the important and necessary work they do in some form. AKA is just demonstrating, once again, the power and leadership that D9 organizations have in this country. These organizations and their accomplishments should be included among those African American organizations/businesses that changed and continue to change the fabric of America. This is something for all of us to be proud of.

    dicegirl
Zambi it was the same thing when I was in school, the AKA's were considered the "pretty and sort of prissy girls", the Delta's were the cool girls who did the most work in the community, the Zeta's and Sigma Gamma Rho were considered the unattractive ones who couldn't get into the other two. Just like I remember the Kappa's were the pretty boys, Alphas were the cool ones, and the Ques were the most fun (and the freakiest).

    Hello everyone.

For starters I would like to say that I'm not a greek letter organization member. I went into the military fresh outta high school and stayed in the military for 10 years. After leaving the military, I attended college where I got 2 degrees. I was older than most of the people who were pledging, and knew that I couldn't allow a mere CHILD to hit me with no wood- especially after fighting in 3 theatres of combat & getting wounded by gunfire 3 times.

All of this fussing over color is childish to me- For when you've been in the military, you realize that if you're a light skinned or dark complexioned African American the Caucaisians see you as still a BLACK person. Period.

We gotta get over this thing about color, cuz it keeps us as a people divided.

With that being said, I congradulate the women of A.K.A. Sorority, Incorporated for their 100th anniversary and for being the first Black Greek Lettered Organization to get a doll in their honor.

    Pimp‘n the system ain‘t ez.

Congrats to ladies of AKA. Once again the soroity is setting a trend for others to follow. But since it is a sorority why not make a "sorority collection" which will include dolls of all shades of black, to sale as a whole. That way AKA's diversity (of shades) will be represented because contrary to the belief of some limited minds, AKA has a diverse membership just like the African-American people. And guess what? On my campus most of the AKAs are dark skinned.I'll be so glad when society gets off this whole dark skin/light skin bull. I don't know about the rest but I'm brown skinned and my black is beautiful baby (lol). I think people should start accepting who they are and not let ignorant people who judge people on their skin tone discourage them.
I wonder what the other BGLOs dolls are going to look like...
If the doll is too light, could she ever be too dark? We may have to call up Jesse and Al for that one.

Konfidence is the Key to success...
