You know, morticians have been doing all kinds of stuff for years. I remember in my mother's hometown of Paducah, Ky., there was a black homeless man, whose body was never claimed by relatives, who was propped up against a wall of the funeral home for years. He became the funeral home's mascot of sorts. And Jet magazine, I believe, even did a feature on him.
Yes. It's creepy. But it's not the first. And I'm afraid, probably won't be the last.
By the way, this young man was SO young. At 24, why would he make such a request? Did he know he was going to die? Found under a bridge? Was he in a gang or something? This all sounds so bizarre and suspect, actually. |

Well I personally find it a bit tasteless, but if it was his wish and it helps his family cope, then thats what matters.
Personally, my cousin asked for something similar, and my aunt knocked him upside the head and told him HELL NO! She told him That as lomg as she was alive she wasnt going to make his death something tasteless and tacky, but thats my family, esp the old-school ones. They are very proper and by the book when it comes to stuff like that.
And I think the guy in this story was rolling with the wrong set of people according to the story I read on another site, so he kind of knew his days were numbered. |

It is kind of creepy, I mean, yikes, but there are there really any "rules" to how someone wants to be remembered? In the paper, he said that he thought of himself as a "pretty standup guy" and I think that it a great way to give him his last wishes. Yes, it is TOTALLY strange and creepy, but that's only because we're not used to it. Now, to have him in the house, his poor mother-- I feel for her. It would bug me out if I saw that in someone's house and I don't know if I would be able to sleep, but it was her SON. So, if it was your son, would you be scared? I don't think I would be.

My condolences to his family. Poor guy was shot to death. Instead of focusing on how strange that was, how about focusing on STOPPING THE VIOLENCE.
And as far as the comment about him wearing his Gabanna glasses and a fitted-- if that's who HE was when he was alive, why not bury him true to the person that he was? Who says that you have to be in a suit and tie? If he wasn't a suit and tie kind of guy to begin with, why does he have to be one now. Because it's not the "norm"? Is that why? Because it's "inappropriate?" When my cousin passed away at 26, we buried him in a white tee, jeans and a fitted-- cause that's who he was.

About two years ago, one of my students said that the family wanted to have his brother standing up against the casket at the funeral and/or wake. I thought it was interesting and different. Of course I'm not ignorant or rude so I just told him that it definitely would be memorable. I initially thought it was a gang-related thing for his brother because that's what he hinted at, however he respected the classroom rules and didn't get too specific as to why. |

I have to agree some of the comments are over the top....If you don't think this manner of display at a wake is appropriate, then you know what, don't have it done at your wake or funeral. But who gets to be lord and master of what's "appropriate"? At the end of the day, it was the man's dying wish and it would be disrespectful of his family to ignore it.

I'm glad his mom was able to grant his living wish in death. Three days in her house in that condition is a little tough for me to grasp onto. OKay, I'm sorry but obviously this young man knew he was leading a life that would soon end up taking his life...And if I were the mother and this was MY son, I would not honor these wishes...And I would sleep just fine at night...
Reason being, I don't want any other young male relatives or young boys period to think planning your funeral should be high on your list at a very early age...Nor would I want them to be associated with a life-style, that would coincide with that...
Yes he is dead and gone...And some may say we should have more respect but this man didn't have any respect for himself or his family if he knew the life he was living was dangerous, deadly, and wrong but continued to do so...I mean he wanted to be buried standing up because he was a "Stand up Guy"? And just what made him a stand up guy? IMO A stand up guy would be one who would abide by the law and had a legit business or was getting an education and maintaining his household...
Don't get me wrong, the family has every right to grieve how they want, I just don't think I would've made it something to glorify, especially if I suspected the life-style that took my son away was a very dangerous or illegal one...
On another note, hopefully his soul is at peace...And unless it's self-defense or someone has threatened your family or something, I don't see any purpose of killing someone..That person is dead and gone but you are left on earth to sleep with one eye open, or to even try and sleep period...You will always wonder, when are the feds or the police going to come and kick down your door and send you off to prison for the rest of your life...Or when will someone try and rob or betray you...Or when you will be someone's target...That's no way to live...

I just remembered this; Back in the day people used to take pictures of the deceased in a pose doing something the deceased would have been doing had he/she been alive. They would keep the pictures in the photo album. They have a whole book about the practice, I forgot what its called. This type of thing has been going on for centuries. My mom and I were at my great grandmother's house and it was a house next door which has now been torn down but she recalls when the lady passed her wake was in her home. My mom is 50 so it really hasn't been that far back in history when this was done.It spooked me out. If he was there 3 days straight, words could not convey how I would feel having the body in my house like that. Hell I hate going to the funeral home so imagine your house? To you dummies saying how did they know his last wishes when he has passed. Biggie did life after death the album before he died and also Tupac raps about death. left eye on her vh1 special has premonitions of her own death. Some people just know when it is their time. He probably knew the life he was living would cut his life short. You tell me you have never thought about death and mentioned to a family member things you would want to have carried out after your death. Even if it is to be happy and not to mourn. As I get older and I see so many young people dying I sometimes begin to wonder more about death and the afterlife. My mom said it best one day while we were talking. I told her I feared death. She told me she used to fear death but when she trusted in the Lord she doesn't worry about the fear of death anymore. People should be buried in what makes them happy and what you seen them wear while living in my opinion. I am a tomboy and I say all the time to my mom, just bury me in some J's, jeans, and a polo cuz thats what made me feel good and comfortable to wear while I was living. Where does it state one has to be buried in dress clothes? It may be tradition but definitely not a requirement. Some things I don't understand or try to understand. I bet some of you talking about him standing up in his mother's living room are the same people who go to a funeral and snap pictures of the deceased in their casket. I never understood who would want to see somebody like that. You would think they would want to have pictures of them happy and full of life. Some people mourn in different ways. |

@Justforfun WE THINK ALIKE. I DON'T GIVE A DAMN IF EVERYBODY IN MY FAMILY TREE STAYED AT THE HOUSE WITH ME ON GUARD FOR THOSE 3 DAYS AND ESCORTED ME TO THE BATHROOM. I COULDNT HAVE DONE IT. AFTER EVERYONE LEAVES AND SHE IS STILL IN THE HOUSE IT WILL ALWAYS BE A GRIM REMINDER. I WOULD HAVE TO MOVE THA HELL OUT OF THAT HOUSE. BUT SOME PEOPLE DON'T VIEW DEATH AS WE DO OR I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON A LOVE ONE AND HOW CLOSE YOU WERE TO THAT PERSON THAT DEATH COULD NOT BREAK THE BOND. I REMEMBER GOING TO A FUNERAL OF THIS LADY AND HER ADULT GRAND KIDS KISSED HER ON HER CHEEK (LIKE THE BROTHER DOES IN THE PIC ABOVE). IM THINKING WHAT IN THA HELL!!!! I AINT PUTTING MY DAMN LIPS ON A CORPSE. DAMN EMBALMING FLUID AND MAKE UP AND ITS JUST.....I SAID IF IT HAPPENED TO A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER LIKE MY SISTER, DAD, OR MOM, THEN I WOULD GIVE THEM A "SEE YOU LATER KISS" CUZ GOOD BYES TO ME ARE FOREVER. WELL THAT TIME CAME WHEN MY DAD PASSED AND I STILL COULD NOT BRING MYSELF TO DO IT . SOMEONE TOLD ME WHEN U KISS A DEAD PERSON IT FEELS LIKE CAULIFLOWER. WTF???? IM SORRY BUT I DON'T EVER WANT TO FIND THA HELL OUT. |

It took me a couple of days to look at this, and it is very sad. I thought he would be a elderly man, not a 24 year old. At that age why is he even talking about his funeral? Obviously he led a dangerous life, to be found dead under a bridge. So senseless, and sickening. |
