WTF??? BLENDER MAGAZINE CLAIMS THAT TUPAC IS THE MOST OVER-RATED ARTIST IN HISTORY!!!

September 04, 2008. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Dead rapper Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, the hip-hop icon who sold more records after he was murdered than during his brief career, is the most overrated person in music, according to music magazine Blender.

Shakur tops a tongue-in-cheek list that also includes "places, trends and other junk in rock," Blender said in its upcoming October issue, due on newsstands next week.

Other overrated finalists included the Grammys at No. 7, encores at No. 12, Pink Floyd at No. 14 and "the music you loved as a teenager" at No. 23.

Shakur, a "gangsta" rapper who showed his sensitive side in movies, was killed during an unsolved drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. More than a dozen albums have been released in the ensuing years, and his image is almost as ubiquitous as that of Che Guevara or Bob Marley.

But while Shakur was a decent rapper with "insane rock-star charisma," according to Blender, he also "larded records with self-mythologizing, mediocre filler."

It's not the first time the pages of Blender have been used to bring down Shakur a few notches. In its June issue, rapper Lil Wayne listed him among his top five rappers, but then admitted: "I can't front: I was never into Pac."

As for the Grammys, the music industry's top awards, Blender said sitting through the ceremony was "like watching paint dry on Celine Dion's forehead."

And encores were notable chiefly for allowing bands to go backstage and do drugs while fans wonder if they should beat the rush to the parking lot, Blender said.

Veteran British rock band Pink Floyd, meanwhile, were responsible for "unbearable LSD slapstick" and "self-important bombast." And Blender warned that teenagers' brains "can inflate a great band to Christ-size proportions" and turn a bad song into the most meaningful.

	I'd say that the reason Pac sold as many albums as he did afer his death is due to the fact that he had tracks for albums. He obviously laid down A LOT of songs to put all those albums out. 	Depends on what a person likes to hear. To me, he is a bit overrated. His style was basic. His flow was choppy, although he could expand on different topics. Biggie is good, a little better than Pac(flow wise) and equal to Jay, but I don't think he the best either. Biggie's style is too one-dimensional, as far as topics go. Nas'll blow all three of these dudes out the water. My all-time favorite/best ever is Rakim. Can switch flow speeds, rhyme about any topic, educated punchlines and the one who ushered this style of ryhming into existence. I also give Ra a leg up on these dudes because he dropped those lyrics when he was 16.

	One word that explain the greatness of TUPAC is his versatility, his writing skills the metaphors,similes. Pac could give you positive song and then he would give you a club song, follow up with a thug song and then show up at the spoken word and say several poems . There's a Pac song for every situation. Every time TUPAC in mention east coast folks want to bring up WEST COAST sounding BIGGIE. His sound was not a tradition east coast sound nor was his tracks. Biggie was a great rapper also but Pac was far more intelligent and his lyrics had more depth. I know people today that think "ME AND GIRL" song is a song about Pac and his female girlfriend but it a song about his gun being his girlfriend. Not too mention how he murder Biggie and that little group he had I can't remember the name of the group in the song Hit'em up. Rakim is great but Biggie and Rakim are rappers that rap in one style and one style only. My opinion to be greatest you must have VERSATILITY your lyrics must have substances speak about other thing beside drug dealing and weed smoking. If any of you need more clarification on the lyrics of PAC you can take a college course to look more in depth at his lyrical skills content. People questions Pac being a thug. 	It matters not to me what Blender or anyone else thinks of 'Pac....he was THE MAN. I would never have been into rap or hip hop without having first took the time to stop and really listen to the lyrics. Also, when rap first started, there was no music really to the lyrics. Tupac to me, was the first one, who incorporated music and artists who could sing and bring home the message he rapped about. As a singer - I listen to lyrics and music and voices - and the combination of 'Pac's rap lyrics, the chorus line, the music and the complete production of his masterpieces, is what finally attracted me, pulled me in to the hip hop culture. I'm 55 and I love this music!! Blender Magazine is published by Dennis Publishing. The magazine began in 1994 as the first digital CD-ROM magazine by Jason Pearson, David Cherry & Regina Joseph, acquired by Felix Dennis/Dennis Publishing, UK it published 15 digital CD issues, and launched on the web in 1997. What can you EXPECT from a publisher that wasn't even around until '94!!??? In addition, these folks hail from the UK (England). There is no real appreciation of Hip Hop in their writers. They certainly don't understand or know the relevance of our music and culture as well as the reason we need our own awards shows, etc. They can KICK ROCKS!

But 20-year old Arvand Elihu sees him for more than his rapping talent. To him, Shakur is an ideal study for students of poetry and history, as important as any of the great writers and social commentators. "Tupac was literally blessed," said the molecular and cell biology major at the University of California at Berkeley of the controversial superstar rap artist. "Not only did his poems flow nicely, he painted perfect pictures for readers and listeners." The prestigious university has given Elihu permission to teach a course on one of the world's most highly controversial rappers, the late Shakur. Elihu is the student instructor of a two-unit pass/fail course entitled "History 98, the Poetry and History of Tupac Shakur." The month-old course, part of a program in which students can create professor-approved courses of their own design, has already drawn an overflow of 80 students (30 above capacity) to each of its twice-weekly meetings, with more waiting to get in. Elihu, who was born in Iran and transplanted to Beverly Hills, Calif. at an early age, said he's always been interested in "artists who expressed their personal lives" in song. Once his cousin introduced Elihu to the work of Shakur a few years ago, Elihu said he began to think of the rapper alongside other favorite artists such as Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, which led to his deeper look into the life of the Death Row Records artist who was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas a year ago this Saturday. "My cousin played the song 'Only God Can Judge Me' (from All Eyez on Me) and that line, 'got the doctor standing over me screaming I can make it/ got a body full of bullet holes, laying here naked,' just painted such an amazing picture. Which, of course, came true later as well," Elihu added grimly. Shortly after Shakur's death, Elihu became a hard-core fan of his lyrics. While sitting in a course on medieval literature last year, he said he drawing parallels between Shakur's writing and historical literature. "I realized that he was misinterpreted and that he was literally blessed with the ability to put words together. I started making all these connections with his words and honor and bravery and I became convinced that his lyrics were poetry. That he's a modern, contemporary poet of our time." Elihu said he became convinced that, in 300 years, when historians look back on late 20th-century society "no one could give a clearer picture of what was going on than Tupac Shakur." However, Shakur's legacy of arrests and legal battles has some wondering whether the rapper's life is worth exploring. The controversy surrounding Shakur has continued more than a year after his murder with a lawsuit filed as recently as last week by Orlando Anderson, a suspect in the Shakur murder, for an alleged beating doled out by Shakur and Death Row boss Marion "Suge" Knight on the night of the rapper's murder. "In some ways, yes, I have a problem with it," said Marilyn Merry, president of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLWU) and a long-time member of the National Political Congress of Black Women (NPCOBW), a group whose chair, Dr. C. DeLores Tucker, has filed suit against the rapper for his lyrics and spoken out frequently in opposition to gangsta rap. "We've (NPCOBW) often said that we're programming our youth for destruction with this music. In an academic setting, he's giving credence to some of the garbage he (Shakur) wrote." However, Merry, herself a poet, said she could see some merit in studying the later, more introspective work of Shakur. "There's a possibility that it may have some value," Merry said. "Because it is in an academic arena and some of the songs that he wrote, like "Keep Ya Head Up," for young women, I thought that was positive." Elihu's enthusiasm for the class so impressed history professor Robert Brentano, that the medieval history lecturer agreed to sponsor it. "One of the first readings in the class of mine Arvand took was by the British historian Gildas," Brentano said. "He was terribly excited about how that kind of a writer helped us understand the society he wrote about. I'd never seen anyone so interested in this subject and Arvand quickly made a connection between Gildas and Tupac, which he explained to the class in a very invigorating way." Brentano then invited Elihu to reprise his lecture in a two-hour version for another medieval literature class. The professor, who admitted to being vaguely familiar with Shakur only through his still-unsolved drive-by murder, said he has since listened to Shakur's albums, but is "not in a position" to comment on his lyrics. Shakur's former manager, Leila Steinberg, was a guest lecturer at Monday's class, and Elihu said he hopes that Shakur's mother and sister will address the class in the near future. The course is held Mondays and Wednesdays on the Berkeley campus. Despite Shakur's often graphic depictions of ghetto existence and frequently crass and misogynist language, Brentano said his decision to sponsor Elihu's course didn't ruffle too many academic feathers. "My peers didn't necessarily look askance at the class, although one professor didn't think it was appropriate. He accepted my judgment of its merits, though," he said. Elihu said he did not have it as easy. "It was tough to convince people at first," said Elihu, deflecting comparisons to widely-ridiculed recent university classes at other institutions on the works of Keanu Reeves, Madonna and MTV. "People didn't see the depth in his work at first. But I think after a few classes, people have gained a respect for him, not as a rapper or political figure, but for his raw gift of poetry. As a youngster, I sided with Biggie, cause I'm a native New Yorker. But today I give Tupac credit for having other talents- acting and of course poetry. Both those dudes spoke on violence or degrading women; but Tupac have more of his share of touching songs. Whose the best rapper ever? I can't really say, they all make slick comments about women, but mostly women who don't even respect themselves. I have lots of Cam'ron songs on my iPod, and that dude is a total azzhole in terms of women. Does that make Cam'ron the best cause I have his songs? Cause I actually baught Purple Haze and not the bootleg? I think the rappers of the early 80's were great because they didn't talk all that, "I'll pop a nicca" or "My squad bust gats" or "I nut in a h0 face" or "I'm blood, I'm crip." So I might have to give Nas credit, he doesn't have that "thug/gang affiliated" thing Tupac had, isn't a "drug dealer" like Jay-Z, nor talking slick about women as much as Big did. But I've never bought any of Nas's albums, and I have more Jay-Z songs on my iPod. I guess I just feel like dancing more than thinking???

	@fiftynine and Killwhitey Hmm, I think that God is overrated and he is definetly no icon, because if God controls everything then he responsible for all the bad things in the world: Poverty, hunger, nautral disasters, suffering, etc. That makes a very bad icon. What Tupac did was basically try and show people that we're all in the struggle together: the struggle to make good lives for ourselves and solve the problems that we face. Of course many of his songs are regarding 'thug life', but a song is bascically a story, and all stories have a moral at the end; not an immoral... He tried to teach us that the way we are living is detrimental. Through his various art forms: poetry, songs, films, etc: he tried to raise awareness and give hope to disillusioned people. Simply put he was a leader, and a great leader at that. All the people on that list, none of them were leaders, they were just icons that wanted to be famous and have people follow them. Tupac wanted to lead people to the truth, and he did that to a degree. Unfortunately he is dead.

As in actor Tupac was young and upcoming, we never got to see what he was capable of. I am not saying he was or would have been the greatest actor of all time. We really didn't get to see him play many roles. To say he didn't have potential would be wrong. He went to the Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied acting, dance, and music. I think he could have been a pretty good actor in the right roles. he had many followers and many stories, and could have written his own little Bible as he worked his way through life. Not that he is actually Jesus Christ. Tupac is by far the greatest leader of my lifetime. He did a lot for people, black and white. He spoke only the truth, the realest guy ever. I got a video for you to watch on YouTube, you will see how real and passionate he is. He is the reason rap is no longer about beef and fighting, and only about talking about money and girls. He is the one who got the Bloods and Crips to call a trust in the 90's. His Mother was a Black Panther who got thrown in jail while she was pregnant with him. Don't tell me he wasn't a leader, to quote him he may not have changed the world, but he will spark the seed that will change the world. 	As Tupac says in the movie, some people will hear his lyrics and want to emulate the gangsta lifestyle but someone living in that world will hear it and know that Tupac understands how it feels to live in that world (hopeless) and Tupac was implying, I think, that the second person might get hope from that--paradoxically. He seemed unwilling to judge the first person, but it's the second type of listener that he wanted to reach. Not to get too sociological, but there's a phenomenon whereby people who are on the outside create an inside language so they can be on the inside and make the establishment be on the outside for a change. Rappers aren't the only ones who do this, but an example is Tupac's idea of "Thug Life." He redefined the word "thug" to mean something other than what everyone else means by it. Then he wondered why he had to keep explaining it. Some of his fans probably don't get it still. He explains it in the movie, but it's a big challenge he set up for himself. Tupac's new meaning of thug is really tricky for two reasons: 1) By his definition, a "thug" might not be a traditional thug, but it's a person who lives in a world where a lot of things are determined by traditional thugs. A Tupac "thug" seems to be a person whose life is a reaction to a world of thugs, adapting to them, trying to get along with them, trying to get them to get along with their community. 2) A lot of what Tupac did may have been in reaction to traditional thugs, but when he was being a vigilante or whatever he was doing--beating up somebody on camera in a Las Vegas casino--it is hard for John Q. Citizen or John Law to see him as different from the real gangsters. The analogy that comes to mind is Lenny Bruce's comic routine about how "beep you" shouldn't be an insult because it relates to pleasure, so you should say it as a term of affection. A lot of people didn't get it and saw the routine as just another example of how smutty he was, but those who got it realized that we use language to inflict pain with words that could just as easily be used to express the opposite. In a sense, Bruce was doing the same kind of thing as Tupac. But Bruce didn't try to go around saying "f.u." to everybody, so that when they got mad he could say, "Oh, but it means the opposite of what you think." He knew that most of the world would never get that. Tupac had two sides, as the movie points out, the idealist who thought that if he kept at it, people would understand him, and the angry young man who said screw them if they don't get it.
