From the very first question, he was on attack mode. The pundits will try to spin some of the Senator's answers as conceding to much to McCain by "agreeing" with him.
On the contrary; I see it as man who is humble enough to give credit where credit is due and smart enough to use that as a segue into a decisive attack. He hit McCain on points of fact, not political rhetoric; on his record and on his judgment.
If I am not mistaken, those are the very points that Sen McCain is trying to use as cannons against Sen Obama's "lack of experience."
I feel that it was clear that not only can Senator Obama hold his own, even with his shorter resume, that it was made perfectly clear that he is quite capable of being forward thinking and that he places the interest of this country as whole above the fray of politics and personal ambition.
I am interested to see how many of you are willing to argue these facts in McCain's defense.
By the way, for those that think he didn't come out strong enough, take a gander at the rules of debate. No one breaks out of the gate at full throttle. A good poker player never exposes his hand. It is a gradual process. Sen Obama played this debate right and he let Sen McCain come to him. He was on offense for most of the night.

I think McCain did better on his overall presentation (NOT NECESSARILY THIS ISSUES OR ANSWERS HE GAVE) but the way he presented himself - gave him the appearance of an experienced, level headed, controlled, calm individual. McCain gave rhetorical answers that really didn't answer the questions leveled at him. He claimed at one point in his campaign that he would follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell, but then said last night that he wouldn't go after him in Pakistan without Pakistani permission.
This comes from the same man that backed a failed push into Iraq, without the permission of the free world. He and Bush both looked into the eyes of Americans and told us lies that cost the lies of over 4,000 american troops.
Then when pressed on the the TRUE WAR ON TERROR as it stands in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he didn't even take a decisive stand.
His delivery was marginal at best. At no time did he maintain eye contact with his opponent and spoke mainly to the mediator. He rarely addressed the audience with precision and presidential flare.
Is that not a necessary characteristic of a President of this great nation? How is McCain going to stand up to Putin looking like a beat down old man, scared to look his enemy in the eye?

Obama is currently ahead 54-46%. And please people, don't let McCain's so called "calmness under fire" be given more credit than it deserves.
McCain came into this debate knowing that the American public would be looking for his famous temper. This man has practiced for months to keep that famous temper in check and it was evident last night.
But he lost his edge in giving up one of his defining qualities. Maybe if he had adapted the whipped look years ago, he would have been voted out of office at the state level. He would have been seen for what he truly is; a man that feels he is entitled to positions of privilege and power because of his background, not because of hard work or true insight.
I do hail him as an American Hero, however, there are thousands of people with stories just like his, who sacrificed immensely for their country. But the stark difference between him and them; they aren't the son or daughter of an Admiral. They are not the grandson of an Admiral. No one pulled strings to get them into the War College. No one handed them the best in life. Most of them worked hard and died for their country without all the pomp and fanfare surrounding McCain's every move.

He was humble enough or more appropriately “diplomatic” to give credit where it was due and acknowledge points of similarity while still emphasizing their differences. AND above all, was willing to look his opponent in the eye to establish…or at least try to….a connection on a basic human level.
As for McCain…his condescending remarks, one liners, partisan talking points and insistence upon making comments that he knew to be factually incorrect ARE precisely what his supporters applaud. McCain is part of an ideology (the far right) that wallows in basic immature, impulsive behavior which appeals to certain segments of our society that regard anger as leadership….sort of like a playground mentality of “follow the bully.”

Well, let's get a view of what people said shall we:
If you can read all the comments from a wide variety of news outlets in the following roundup and somehow come to the conclusion of spinmeisters like Keith Olbermann that Senator Obama won the night, more power to you. From where I sit, it looks like Roger Simon’s nailed it in his aptly titled Politico article: The Mac Is Back:
John McCain was very lucky that he decided to show up for the first presidential debate in Oxford, Miss., Friday night. Because he gave one of his strongest debate performances ever.
While Barack Obama repeatedly tried to link McCain to the very unpopular George W. Bush, Bush’s name will not be on the ballot in November and McCain’s will.
And McCain not only found a central theme but hit on it repeatedly. Obama is inexperienced, naive, and just doesn’t understand things, McCain said.
Sure, McCain is a pretty old guy for a presidential candidate, but he showed the old guy did not mind mixing it up. He stood behind a lectern for 90 minutes without a break — you try that when you are 72 — and he not only gave as good as he got, he seemed to relish it more.
At least twice after sharp attacks by McCain, Obama seemed to look to moderator Jim Lehrer for help, saying to Lehrer, “Let’s move on.”
I’ll just bet Obama wanted Jim to move on. And Mr. Lehrer was more than happy to lend an assist. Nonetheless, this article is very telling given that Politico has been more than happy to function as an Obama cheering section (they surely did when Hillary was in the race):
McCain just pounded away on his central argument: Obama just didn’t “understand” how to deal with Pakistan; how dangerous it is to meet with foreign leaders without preconditions; how serious the Russian invasion of Georgia was; the price of failure in Iraq.
McCain got in a few zingers that really zeroed in on Senator Obama’s weakness as a candidate overall:
“He doesn’t understand, he doesn’t get it,” … “There is a little bit of naiveté here.”
“There are some advantages to experience, knowledge and judgment.”
“I understand why Sen. Obama was surprised and saddened that the surge succeeded beyond his wildest expectations.”
My favorite McCain comment by far however, was this:
“I don’t need any on-the-job training,” McCain said. “I am ready to go at it right now.”
Simon seemed to agree, saying: McCain certainly seemed like it Friday night.
NBC’s Tom Brokaw seemed to agree as well:
That was the most distinctive difference obviously once we got into the area of national security. John McCain bored in on Barack Obama. He’s been reading the same polls we all have. There are grave reservations in most of the polls about whether Barack Obama has enough experience and whether he’s qualified to be commander in chief. And tonight Senator McCain went right after that vulnerability in Barack Obama.
Fortune’s Nina Easton had this to say to Greta Van Susteren of FOX News:
“I thought it was a really good night for John McCain … The first 35 minutes I counted seven or eight attacks. He just went after Obama. Everything from accusing him of supporting earmarks to accusing him of supporting a — what did he say? An energy bill that was festooned with goodies. And it seemed to knock Obama off balance. It did two things it knocked Obama off balance he really had trouble getting his sea legs again and secondly, it moved this whole conversation about the financial crisis back to a conversation that John McCain is comfortable with, which is spending. …
John McCain comes off as very clear, direct, you know, ‘I looked at Putin and I saw KGB in his eyes.’ He talks directly.
There’s still something bland and policy-speak about Barack Obama that I don’t think does really well in these settings. He comes off as — and I know people use the term ‘cool,’ but I find it policy-speak in rounded edges and not direct.”
Bill Schneider of CNN, one of the biggest koolaid sippers out there – you remember him – he said Hillary’s supporters just needed a little grieving time and they’d come around. Something the equivalent of ‘she just needs to take a walk and calm down, maybe a glass of wine…’
First he gave us a month. Then he said we needed another month. How’s that workin’ out, Mr. Magoo? I mean, Mr. Schneider? Anyhoo, Bill had this to say:
“McCain scores a good point, that under Obama’s original plan on Iraq, US troops would have been out last spring, before the implementation of the surge. … McCain, in talking about Afghanistan and Pakistan, is drawing on his vast experience for the first time in this debate, and it really sounds very convincing…McCain’s scoring points on Obama’s opposition to the so-called surge in Iraq, a buildup of forces that McCain vigorously supported.”
Politico’s Ben Smith:
“McCain’s sharp and focused; he hasn’t landed a really hard punch, but he’s scoring on a lot of jabs.”
ABC News’ Jake Tapper live blogged the following:
‘You don’t do that, you don’t say that out loud,’ McCain says about Obama’s threat to sent US troops into Pakistan to strike at high-level al Qaeda operatives if given high level intelligence, with or without Pakistani government permission. McCain quotes George Schulz saying don’t point a gun unless you’re prepared to pull the trigger. Credible riff here, I think.’
No kidding. How hilarious then that the weasel George Stephanopoulos of ABC scored Obama slightly higher in the debate than John McCain. Yet his other colleague ABC News’ Rick Klein made this point:
You knew this was coming — a blistering attack on the preconditions line Obama has long wished he never delivered. This is a McCain layup.
Politico’s Jonathan Martin also made these points:
McCain has a strong moment early, drawing an implicit contrast with President Bush. Noting the criticism he took from his own party for calling on SEC head Chris Cox, the GOP nominee promises in firm language: “As president of the United States people are going to be held accountable in my administration.”
[I]n what surely made weary McCain aides smile, their guy just was able to set off a protracted discussion of earmarks and spending, getting in repeated references to Obama’s requests for Illinois. Never bad turf for Republicans, but especially for this Republican.

Given that MSNBC is the all Obama all the time network, these comments were a bit of a shocker. From MSNBC’s Carrie Dann:
McCain’s is the message that tests more strongly with voters. The latest NBC/WSJ poll showed that respondents prefer ‘a president who will go in and clean up Washington and take on the waste and fraud in the system’ to ‘a president who will end the Bush administration policies, and have active government oversight.’ by a margin of 67 to 29%
MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan:
John McCain clearly won this battle on points. He was aggressive all evening long. He was very tough. He constantly portrayed Barack directly and indirectly as sort of weak and indecisive and inconstant making these statements. He also had a most powerful, emotional moments. I think that Wolfsborough story and that 640 guys re-upping in Iraq, and that woman giving him that bracelet–I think those things reached the heart and the gut. I will say this about Barack Obama. He did what he had to do in the sense that he came off as a tough fellow, a counterpuncher who would stand up to John McCain, and I think he helped himself in that regard, but overall I really think John McCain came off as the winner of this debate…
As to the bracelet, Mr. Buchanan is correct. John McCain had very moving moment discussing a mom who asked him to wear the bracelet of her son who died for his country in Iraq. Senator Obama at the end of this speech, chiming in with “I’ve got a bracelet, too. Its from uh, ah um…” and had to look down at it to remind himself of the name – did not do himself any favors. He should have had the decency and exhibited the restraint to leave that moment to Senator McCain. McCain is not only a war hero, but a POW who suffered greatly in service to his country. Obama’s lack of personal connection to that bracelet or its value was obvious and it was a poor moment for him that will certainly resonate with voters.
And then there was the Kissinger smackdown as noted in the Weekly Standard:
Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says: “Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”
Wow. So wouldn’t you think that the future President should be geared to reality?
The National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty:
Judging from CNN’s scrolling chart, independents also seemed to like McCain citing Tom Coburn calling earmarks a ‘gateway drug.’
From where I sit, McCain had a surprisingly strong night. …[T]he overall message of the night was clear - McCain is smart, familiar with the issues on a striking level of detail, knows what he wants to do.
And according to Geraghty, McCain’s line closing of the night also scored.
‘I don’t think I need any on the job training. I’m ready to go right now… I know how to deal with our adversaries, and I know how to deal with our friends.’
And how many times did Senator Obama say that John McCain is right during the debate? Seven or eight? He got away with that crap during his debates with Hillary. The equivalent of “yeah, what she said.” But I’m not sure how good a strategy that is when you are debating a Republican. Basically Senator Obama was saying, ‘Sure, McCain would be a great President. He’s right.’
Well at this point, I don’t know about great. I know who would have been great and unfortunately, that wonderful lady is no longer in the race.
But it is very clear that on experience, on actually bucking the system and working for reform and on having a great deal of practical leadership experience, John McCain would be a great deal better than our other choice. |

They are in a much stronger position now because of the war in Iraq. Our commander in chief, backed by McCain helped to destabilize the entire region. We have lost our status as a world leader on more fronts than just the middle east.
Russia, our longtime frenemy is rearing her ugly head, bent on, if not world domination, but domination of Europe and it's sources of energy. The mighty United States of America didn't have the leverage withing the world community to do anything about the Georgian invasion. All we could do is talk. All we could do is watch. Being able to quote someone elses words doesn't make you enlightened to the facts. Being able to digest information and understand the truth of a statement stands at the core of being an informed voter.
Henry Kissenger DID SAY THAT WE SHOULD NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN WITHOUT PRECONDITIONS, albeit he said he would begin with the Secretary of State. He doesn't agree that the president of the United States should do it, but that isn't what Senator Obama said. He said that he will reserve the right as President to do it if he feels it will be in the best interest of national security.
You need to re-watch the debate, obviously. You may want to formulate your own opinions, not regurgitate what the media pundits and campaign surrogates pour down your throat. These people are PAID LARGE SUMS OF MONEY TO SAY THE SKY IS RED AND THE MOON IS MADE OF CHEESE.
You are right, McCain did attack Obama.... with week rhetoric and the usual misinformation that has plagued his campaign. He was far from sharp and focused. He looked off-balance and intimidated, or maybe my HDTV doesn't work as well as the warranty implies.

And one more thing, my great-grandfather was 98 when he died. He still walked 2 miles a day. He did his own gardening and his own home repairs. He did his own grocery shopping and washed his own clothes, by hand no less. And so do many elderly people in this country. Age doesn't always make you frail and broken.

If you noticed...EVERY TIME McCain was asked what he would do about thus and such..he ALWAYS opened with "Senator Obama would do..or Senator Obama seems to think that.." Blah blah blah.

I must have been watching another debate last night, because what I saw last night seemed like a draw to me. i know you all want Obama get creme McCain, but you have to be objective when you're watching these things. I agree with Diamonique70. Personally, I think the debate is closer to a tie with a slight edge towards Obama.
McCain won the foreign policy debate (which is his strongest field), but Obama held his own. Obama got McCain on domestic issues and America's sinking reputation in the world.
McCain needed to knock this debate out of the field, because foreign policy is his strongest position. But he failed. He did okay, but the other debates will help Obama. The low point of the debate came when McCain kept telling Obama "you don't get it". It turned off independents and even some Republicans because he came off as a stuffy. Obama get extra points for addressing McCain when he talked to him and tying him to GWB.

Obama did very well, especially on a topic that is supposed to be McCain's strongest. It really does not matter what the pundits say, what matters is what the undecided voters says and they came back with a resounding Obama win.

Earlier this year he said he is not strong on that topic, is he up to speed now? What about alternative energy? He mentioned 10 new nuclear facilities - where is he getting the money since he is against Obama's big money plans and each nuclear facility may end up costing $50M each.
I just need answers and not nastiness because being nasty is easy but answering tough questions, not so easy.

One thing in judging debates, is if someone admits that the other person is correct, that is the best argument against them. It is called an ADMISSION.
Obama admitted that McCain was correct 9 times. McCain did not admit Obama was right on anything.
On technical terms, Obama overwhelmingly admitted McCain was right.
Well, I am not bias here, but if someone agrees with their adversary on nine critical items, then it looks like the person is superior in knowledge to that person, don't you think?
But to be fair, winning and losing a debate is a MATTER OF OPINION. You think Obama won and that is your right. www.drudgereport.com polls had McCain 68% to Obama 30% so it depends.

That is a key gesture in any debate or serious discussion. How in the h@ll could the republican senator expect to deal with this country's adversaries if he is unwilling to defer to the democratic candidate on friendly turf?
Senator Obama already had me with his intelligence, optimism & vision for this country's future. But he truly wow'ed me yesterday following the foreign policy questions. I didn't expect that he would dominate in foreign knowledge & strategy as he detailed & outlined specifics whereas his cranky opponent, McCain, preferred rehashing the past - over & over again without a present-day concept.
McCain thrives in the past & doesn't fathom the present day issues.

Just listen to the debate when McCain was struggling with pronouncing Iran President Ahmadinejad's name - Obama quietly whispered, "that one is a tough one". He is just a considerate candidate. I would have jumped on McCain's butt, because made so many silly mistakes on a topic he is supposed to shine in.
The worst you can say is that it was a tie which means no game changer for McCain who has been stumbling all week; who's VP pick failed her 3rd interview; who was plummeting in the polls.
Going in all the pundits said, unless Mr. Foreign Affairs came out as the clear winner the win would go to Obama and it did.

Obama smiled, kept a pleasant composure, looked at the camera, McCain and the host. McCain gritted his teeth, never peeped at Obama and smirked while constantly saying "Senator Obama is naive, doesn't know or just doesn't get it."
It was a great debate and they both did an excellent job to me. Obama did not fail, he kept John M. on his toes.
I don't know why people had to compare who did better as long as the debate was good and on topic, which it was. Now, if they discuss something where one doesn't know what he's talking about then they can ask who did better. |

On 20/20 they did a wonderful show of the candidates from birth until now. Part 1 was Friday and Pt 2 will be next Friday.
One of the conservative Republican classmates of Obama's at Harvard said, "Obama had the uncanny ability to bring both sides together and find a common ground, that's why we elected him as President of the Harvard Law Review." If that doesn't speak volumes about the temperament and person we see today then I don't know what does.
An old law professor said "I taught 5,000 students before Obama and never had one that was so special. After he graduated, I have had 5,000 more students and still have the same conclusion."
People can say what they want, the man is at the right place and time in our history and has succeeded on his own merits, not a family legacy or wealth. He didn't even list a race on his Harvard application so Affirmative Action didn't help him either. |

He called the Pakistan situation over a year ago; he said it was time to withdraw from iraq and focus on Afghan because the terrorist groups were getting stronger. He called this sub prime mess a year ago and again 6 mths ago. He has been pretty consistent on making great judgement calls on foreign and domestic affairs.
I think electing a 72 year old man who is fighting the worst kind of cancer is not the best idea. Even worse, it is an open secret that he has a hot temper and is known to go off on people who disagree with him. I can see WWIII, because this jackass has no control.
So we know not will happen in the weeks leading up to the election but I pray that we, Americans, will survive whatever may come our way.

Had the election taken place in 2004, not 2003, the outcome would have been greatly changed. Without discussing the nasty use of "swift boat" politics, let's look at the issues plaguing our country today.
Under the McCain backed Bush administration, our economy has tanked. TANKED!!!! Used in this context, even you die hard McCain supporters must see the error of your ways, or are we just seeing more of the Bush era stubbornness that won't allow even intelligent men and women to admit an error in judgment.
Energy prices have skyrocketed. SKYROCKETED!!!!! Do you remember what Bush said when he first sold you guys on this war? That attacking Iraq and removing Sadaam Hussein from power would stabilize oil prices. Do you remember that? And we all know what came of that promise.
Our countries status among world powers has all but become a disgrace. A DISGRACE!!!!! The president of Germany just mocked the US economy and said that our role as a the worlds economic leader has come to an end. AN END!!!! One of our most staunch allies; and then let's not even go off on the Russian situation. We have absolutely no clout, at all. Putin all but called us out, and all we could do is say "shame on you."
Why is so hard for you Republicans and conservatives to realize that you are wrong. No spin in the world can make what McCain and Bush have done to this country look good. Now you want us to support these failed policies.
McCain is running an increasingly sleezy campaign, even though he vowed not too use the "swift boat" politics of the last election (where George Bush beat him.... remember the nasty story of McCain's black baby?) McCain says what he has to say, does what he has to do, and lies when he has to lie to get into office.
He picked a woman for VP, not because she was the best person for the job, but because he wanted to capitalize on the disgruntled attitudes of Hilliary Clinton supporters.
I can go on and on, but this country is not in the same condition it was in in 2004. Our economy is busted. Our situation with energy, precarious to put it mildly. And we are still at war in Iraq... I can't say with Iraq, because we are just creating enemies as we go.

Do you NOT realize much of Senator Obama's support is derived from the student base, across racial lines? And do not overlook the groundswell of support by mobilized volunteers consisting of thousands of young people, primarily teens to twenty-somethings.
Also, WOMEN (except for the deluded who follow Palin) are strongly supportive of Obama's candidacy for president. His policies are more supportive of women's issues, by far.
And how did you arrive at the contention that the hispanic/latino voting demographic is solely republican? You are mistaken.
As far as "polls" are concerned, they ARE a measurement of support & sentiment for or against a candidate. I have never been solicited for a poll this election period via land line or cell phone nor via correspondence, unfortunately. However, I HAVE willingly responded to internet polls. 2, to be exact. Yet, I do not place an excessive amount of confidence in polls. Polls are unscientific in really gaging how the public will vote. Because, you cannot measure the human factor on election day.

To those commenting about McCain not metioning the middle class, remember those making 5 miliion are middle class. In his mind they are rich but not as rich as him and are able to function whatever the economy so everyone under that amount is invisible and inconsequential. We also have to remember that John McCain won the Republican nomination w/ relative ease. He didn't really have debates w/ the other candidates in his party ad when they were not winning any primaries the dropped out, except for Huckabee of course. They had im "earmarked" (one of his favorite words) from the start to succeed Bush. The Rpublicans were counting on Hllary winning the Democratic nomination and they knew they had it in the bag. They knew America would vote a white man vs a white woman. Then comes Obama who was thoroughly vetted, slandered and outright disrespected but he is still standing strong. Obama just needs to continue doing what he has been doing because McCain w/ his hot temper, age, and lack of skill and judgement will win the election for him. McCain choosing Palin was very wise because the more we hear from her the the dumber and inexperienced she is proven to be. She really should have been a blond. McCain is "walking death" and she most definately is not equipped to lead this nation and letting all the foreign presidents and dignitaries run a train on her will not help run this county effectively (y'all know she'll give a lil Lew Lew). Obama did have a slight advantage in this debate but it was not a knockout. This was the "feel out my opponent" round. John McCain did offer some comic relief when he couldn't prononuce Pakistan's president's name. He is probaly used to just calling him a sand n**ger.
In regard to his not looking at Obama, he was thinking that he couldn't believe that he really had to debate this "uppity n**ger" and how he is entitled to the presidency because of his race and privalege, that only came about because Cindy's father pimped her out to his old azz.
Obama will be the next President. Make sure you vote and remember NOT TO USE THE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES. They are rigged and the votes can be flip flopped in the Repulican's favor (as the companies manufacturing the machines have ties to the Republican party e.g Diebold). look i have nothing to be embarrassed about.. my pictures are tasteful..you are the one who's so embarrassed of your candiate (Mccain)..you are embarrassed to show your face.. i attempted to play with the fonts on my name,i accidentally pushed the browse button when i meant to push save changes.. i was half sleep it was 4:00am. in the morning when i made my last post... My picture is on my facebook and Myspace page and has been for sometime now..Hence,MY PICTURE is still the same one i had on here yesterday...once Mto get around to taking it off pending you will see..I am proud that i support Obama the world has seen My face!!!!
