In Texas you don't need a permit to bare arms in your home and we have a law here called the castle law, which means if you are on my property after dawn and I feel threatened I can blow your ass away and not have to worry about going to jail. I don't know if this is in every state, Texas has always been a shoot first ask questions later place to live....and I still say he was stupid for putting himself in this situation. Here is the gun law in New York...
"No permit is required for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun (except in New York City). No person, firm or corporation engaged in the retail business of selling rifles, shotguns or handguns, shall sell, deliver or transfer any such gun to another person unless the transferee is provided with a gun locking device and a label on safe storage."

Addition, the waiver of permits ONLY applies to rifles and shotguns...NOT handguns. So the HANDGUN had to have paperwork, you MUST have a PERMIT to own a handgun in New York...period. It does NOT matter that it's ONLY in your house.
