HELLO EVERYONE: These are the type of troubled black teens/men who are the reason we don't venture out too late at night. These are the type of black teens/men who are the reason you run from your car to your house at night so noone comes out the bushes and robs you. These are the type of black teens/men who are the reason you fear going out in public for fear that fighting/rioting or SHOOTING will take place. These are the type of blck teens/men who are the reason black communities look like warfields. These are the type of black teens/men who are the reason there is more black on black crime now then white on black crime during the entire Jim Crow era. These are the type of black teens/men out there abandoning their black women and black children like it's the style. These are the type of black teens/men responsible for STATS being released, like over the weekend, that says the level of involvement with black teens/men in shooting deaths has risen drastically since 2000.
Regardless of what you feel about how they were handled during Jena Six (frankly I think, with their flagrant criminal pasts they were being handled ACCORDINGLY) you have to admit they teamed up on and violently beat a child - yes white - and I doubt anyone in here would want their kids to face that fate and have noone answer to it because blacks wanna protest against punishent for crimes. It actually brings a smile to my face to see these kids continue to get into serious trouble so that hopefully blacks who participatedin thatwhole march will see these are NOT the type of things black people need to ban together for. That wasa march wasted that could have been used for that young mildly retarded black girl who are kidnapped and raped by all those hillbillies out in Virginia - yet I remember no marches for her when it came out that those rapists/torturers wouldn't be charged with HALF the crimes they should have been.. These boys got a gift handed to them that they STILL manage to continue to screw up.. Hopefully we wil never make this mistake again. We've gone from marching for civil rights to marching for criminals trying to avoid their just due. NOT A GOOD LOOK BLACK PEOPLE!!
And - while I'm on my soapbox - this goes directly to why it's so important for the black man to be a good positive role model father to his children, especially his sons. I'd bet my next paycheck that if you delved into these boys lives you would see there was't one dad between the six of them.. It's sad and it needs to stop. Black men need to start approaching fatherhood with the same intensity and determination they approach white booty - or should I say whooty.. When arguing for the right to have awhite woman in your life takes presidence over fighting to be a good father - this entire race is doomed!!

It is SO easy for people to judge these kids, not knowing the ordeal they have been through.
I have family from LOuisiana, and even 3 years after the horrible hurricane, that place is still in NEED. Not saying that this has anything to do with it, but from what im told there are alot of racist parts of that state. Hell im in the ATL , and even though there are a mixture of people here, RACISM still eXISt and its strong.
Just pray for the guys, they are obviously going through alot. And in these hard economic times, $hit is going to get a LOT worst before it gets better. I know we get on these threads and laugh and joke, have cyber attacks, its all in entertainment, we should not be taking things like this serious.Its time for us as people to open our eyes, get thr knowlege you need to own your own business, do what you need to do to make sur eyour family is safe. Well perhaps it should be a family sized jail cell cause these no good sorry ass black men out there making these kids and leaving them behind like trash or definitely need some punishment too. I am pretty sure the world is MORE TIRED of watching the black man abandon his children. Society understands a woman has to work with what she is left to work with. But this is what CNN says: He was CLEANING A GUN, it went off, and shot him in the SHOULDER. He had surgery on Monday and is not able to talk yet; the injuries are not life-threatening. Who knows what the true story is.
So this is what I think. WHY IN THE WORLD DOES HE HAVE ACCESS TO A GUN????? As with any other racially charged case, in the beginning of Jena 6 I wanted to hear ALL the evidence first. I listened to the other student's mother (the white student who had been viciously beaten for no reason) and I started wondering why people were supporting these boys. That boy was badly beaten too.
Plus a news show did a fair and thorough investigation and none of the incident happened as it was portrayed to the black community. Nothing. Even a black teacher said there was no "white or black tree" and students of all races use to sit under that tree. However, no one wanted to listen to the truth. I think the black community was fed some BS for sympathy.
Instead of Mychal's father trying to find public support for his son he needs to put his son in therapy to see why he's a habitual criminal. There's something not right here. The boy continues a life of crime even after all of that support! He had a rap sheet before Jena 6 and continues with crime. Why?
Some of the other boys spent the donated money on clothes and vacations. This is why blacks need to find out the truth FIRST before reacting to stories that appear racially charged.
If black people can take off work, get 900 buses to LA and march for some ungrateful criminals surely they can fight the crime in their own communities the same way. Let's see 900 buses roll into Detroit, Newark, Chicago, Philly, Trenton, etc. to fight crime. SMH... |

I knew when this happened, there would be a mixture of opinions and comments. When black folks rallied around these young men for the first offense, I prayed that the 'leaders' and all the folks who were garnering mediaplay and airwaves would have some program in mind to help these young men. They were pushed into an arena for which they were not prepared. When it was over, everybody got back on the bus and went home. Nothing more said. Where is Michael Baisden now? Where is Rev. Sharpton? Where are all the folks who were loudly protesting this mess? These boys were in trouble long before this situation ever came to light. It's beyond not having a father in the home, or a mother who was not strong. There are a lot of people to blame and there is enough to go around. I know that not having father in the home can be devestating, but it's not the only reason for the destruction of our young men. There are mothers and other women who are in these young boys lives and accountability and responsibility have to be accepted by these people also. The school system, the teachers, the community, everyone who is involved has a place in what is happening to our young men.
As a teacher, I see this syndrome daily. Disruptive kids, kids who don't and won't read, behavior issues, talking back, fighting, spoiled, given too much, too soon, and parents who will take the sides of their kids before they even hear the side of the teacher. It's alarming that our youth do not seem to have a better pathway to follow.
All I can say is this - I still have hope! I will not give up on the young men and women of color. We still need a strong force of parental involvement, teachers, ministers, community leaders, financial support, homes, jobs, sufficiency to support one another, CHURCHES(who will get involved BEFORE they get picked up by the police) police officers, attorneys, judges, everyone who is someone to aggressively do what is necessary to support the youth who are in trouble. Our children need discipline, direction and purpose. They need self-esteem building, character and integrity building. They need Jesus and His Word. They need to know to whom they belong. It is the responsibility of the parent to raise the child and those in the household of faith who believe also. There should be layers of support from the old men who give counsel and direction to the middle age and young. We have lost our village. The villagers are lost themselves. Drugs and alcohol, depression, and the other by-products of SIN have come into our village and caused much chaos and destruction. The leader of it all is satan. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He is on a rampage. And we Believers are sitting by and letting him think he has won. We have to be strong in the faith and stand in spite of the conditions of the world. We are in the world, but not of it. We are supposed to represent the strong and mighty of the Lord and yet, we sit back and dissolve into the world and become like the world. The world is not going to change, because they don't see US any different than themselves.
We have a job to do. So many of us on this site are intelligent, have great jobs, experiences and talents. People, it's our fight. If you want these boys to stop robbing you, stealing your cars, breaking into your homes, you have to do something ACTIVE- not 'reactive. We must get up off our behinds and volunteer to steer some young person in the right direction.
People like Mychal Bell and other young black boys like him are being lost everyday because too many of us don't care. It's not our son, and all we can do is talk about how 'bad' they are. They are not bad - just lost.
I am so glad that Jesus found me. In spite of all my sin and wrong-doing, he loved me so much that he went to the cross for my sins, past, present and future and he left his holy word for me to study and his Holy Spirit to depend upon and lean on and be taught by. He has only asked of me one thing - to continue to do as he did while on earth. Love one another - do good to them that use you, don't hate one another, don't retaliate when wrong has been done to you, forgive each other and put away jealousies and discontent between us; find ways to help one another; use your gifts and talents to build up the kingdom and bring joy to each other; find a reason to smile everyday; be thankful for everyday the Lord sends.
When you realize how important LOVE, real LOVE is, all of this other junk will fade away.

Some black people have the insight to place responsibility and accountability where it belongs, others like MTO (with the intentional inaccurate reporting to gain sympathy) do not and continue to enable these young people behavior thus hindering better decision making. Why would he be in possession of a gun given his prior arrests? and where is the parent(s) during this time? or are they only present to cry racism when caught up in situation. Then to try to blame it on a "white" tree and nooses that had happened 6 mos or so prior was a stretch for an excuse.
Then, after all of that, he goes out and shoplifts???!!! Where'd all the money go that was collected for them-to buying guns???? He is the LAST person who should be handling a gun, and I'm sure that with his record it's a violation of some kind for him to be around one.
There are lots of young black boys out there working hard in school, working lil' part-time jobs, and staying out of trouble. (The lil'17 year old who used to cut my grass did all of those things--in addition to playing football before going off to college.) Those are the kids I'd march for. |

Growing up in a two parent household does not guarantee a child will not get into trouble. Just like growing up in a single parent household does not guarantee you will be a criminal.
If my memory serves me correctly, Marcus Jones who is the father of Mychal Bell is very active in Mychal’s life and has been extremely outspoken since the events that have put his son in the history books.
Mychal Bell was a high school football star. He was awarded a scholarship and had a promising future.
I get so tired of people always bad mouthing the youth of today. What do you do to uplift or inspire them?

@ cutenkinky - Go girl! I always say the number of parents in the home is a cop out. My parents divorced when I was younger but I ALWAYS had both of my parents. I just had two homes, *wink* My friends who were teen parents had TWO parents in the home. The people I knew that have been incarcerated while we were young had TWO parents. All of my female friends who were considered whores in college (and they were) had TWO parents. On the flip side, all of my friends who were on the Dean's List, etc were raised by single parents. They were the ones who would stay out of trouble and actually had a clue.
It seemed to me as if, those married parents wore rose colored glasses when it came to their children. THey automatically assume their kid was better off because they were married when it was the opposite. The single parents paid more attention to their kids. They spoke on the phone often and knew what was going on in the child's life. My friends with the married parents spoke to them once or twice a month or when they needed money. Again, these happen to be my experiences. |

I don't feel sorry for him, I think he is a disgrace. He spent almost 2 years in adult jail awaiting trial almost got sentenced for 20 years for a schoolyard fight. Got the whole black community to stand up for him and rally down in Jena and in Washington to the Department of Justice for his freedom and he goes and commits another crime? He is a total idiot and a criminal at heart and will probably wind up in jail anyway. Too bad he didn't learn his lesson after 2 years in jail and facing a life sentence for a lesser crime. Speaking from someone who actually lives where he lives, it was reported that he was caught shoplifting at Dillard's and when officers tried to stop him, he ran out of the store and hid under a car in the parking lot. When they found him, he apparently struck an officer. They charged him with shoplifting, assault, and fleeing arrest.
Whatever happened in Jena is over! This dude has gotten to realize that just like he got all that "positive" coverage when he was locked up, he's going to get "negative" coverage when he f's up. This the second time of me hearing about one of the boys in the Jena 6 getting in trouble with the law over some foolishness.

I apologize it took me a while to respond. I became busy at work.
It is such a fine line and I agree that if someone commits a crime, they should be punished but why is jail the first option for young Asiatic (Black and Latino) youth meanwhile their Caucasian counterparts get let off with slaps on the wrist.
A young Asiatic person and a young Caucasian person can commit the same exact crime but the Asiatic youth will more than like be at the mercy of a public defender and will more than likely serve jail time. Meanwhile the Caucasian youth will more than likely have access to a private attorney and will receive probation and community service.
Prisons are big business. It is a great way to get cheap labor. It is modern day slavery. Than is they reason why Americans of African and Hispanic descent make up 12 and 13 percent of the population in the USA but they make up more than half of the prison population. Are you going to tell me all of them come from broken homes with NO FATHER and SORRY MOTHERS? Are you going to tell me all of them have a predisposition to commit crimes?
Like I said before, if someone commits a crime, by all means they should be punished but let the punishment fit the crime and if the offender is a minor, I think scared straight programs, counseling and community service is more appropriate than jail.
Prisons and jails have a high recidivism rate because as I stated before, they do not rehabilitate, they only breed worse criminals. Inmates learn how to commit bigger and “better” crimes or how to better hew their craft. Some learn their lesson and don’t return sadly, other don’t. That is when the 3 strikes law comes into play but that is an entirely different topic for a different day. |

I went to school with a girl who was the daughter of a minister and a school principal. The family lived in a big house and seemed so perfect on the outside but my classmate went to college, got pregnant, had an abortion and a year later ws a single mother. If I am not mistaken, I think one of her brothers got in trouble with the law.

Okay so I know alot of people might feel sorry for this dude but I don't... I felt sorry when the whole Jena 6 thing happened but he's had so much to be thankful for and he goes out and shoplift... You have got to be kidding me, people protested for days to get this boy out of jail... SO many people gave money,time and other things for them to have justice and this is how he repays them. He's foolish... Tyler Perry offered to pay for all of them to go to the college of their choice, Tom Joyner and Michael Baisdon gave money out of their pockets... He just pissed me off! You can have a two parent home where both parents are too busy with their own lives and the children fend for themselves. This is what happens in wealthy families with a nanny and the children get into drugs, early sex, abortions, vandalism, you name it...
I believe this is what was happening in Sarah Palin's house. Bristol was drinking and who knows what else while its been reported the oldest son was vandalizing homes and into drugs. Palin took on a very demanding job, her husband worked but there were 5 kids at home too.
I knew someone like you described, two professional parents, pillors of the community from the outside but there was hell going on inside that house behind closed doors. If you didn't personally know one of the children you'd scratch your head and wonder why their children were acting out but I was good friends with one of them and knew why. |

I totally agree with SEXYBROWN. At first I was behind the Jena 6, but then a lawyer (black lawyer) showed me true documents about these criminals.
@ Karren71... When Baisden come back from vacation, he will not say sh!t about this incident!! He was the main one who took a bias approach to this situation and then celebrated with a party after the march. The party/celebration after the march turned me off and I never saw Baisden the same again. |

I read your posts and i am sorry but i disagree with you on this part. I agree with you on the race issue in regards to this case.
But as far as the single parent issue goes.. no matter what the statistics say, that's a toss up. Statistics while factual... draw inferences. More importantly, I've never been one to be caught up in statistis, as it relates to family life.
These type statitics in family related matters.. do not speak to the actual stability of one home versus the other.
What statistical data considers to be stable is based on 2 parents providing financial support, education, and rearing.
While 2 parents may acually be present, statistics also show that the major support in the rearing of the child falls on the mother.
Which is why in a divorce, when the father leaves, the mother resumes the role of both parents. |
