Not all the people that don't like her are from Barbados. There isn't always a good reason to dislike an artist. I heard she was on her 2nd album, I never bought the first. I don't like her forehead. It adds to her unique sound. She is fine even with the forehead...she knows it. In the end we have to live with her like she lives with her forehead. Until that chick from American Idol comes out with an album wich one either of them because they can sing and the team behind them is not to be F....ed with. Having recently been to Barbados I can say that nobody there really gives Rihanna a second thought. It's not like she's a hot topic there or something. Nobody hates... nobody cares that much honestly. The only time she's mentioned is in the media, and everybody knows the media talks about everybody. And for her to think that she alone put a country on the map... well thats just insane. If anything her being Bajan gave her an edge because nobody ever had a Bajan in the US music game before. People considered her to be unique and exotic for it. Basically she's run of the mill artist that's a dime a dozen. I am going to be straight up in saying not everyone in barbados hates Rihanna, a statement like that can hurt us. alot of ppl love her and what she is doing for her country. some ppl go as far as to name their children after her. a lot of younger girls look up to her and i think that that is why she gets the heat she does sometimes in terms of her dress. the only time i can recall anyone saying anything about her and placing it in the newspapers was when she went to cheffette (local fast food joint) in only a swimsuit top and a jeans and persons mentioned that this was a bad example to set for the younger girls who looked up to her and may think this is cool. Yes ppl called in to programmes but because they were concerned.
everyone here hails her for what she is doing... our Local market vendor (radio programmme here) always salutes her and ridicules all those who have something to say about her.
saying what she did will place barbados in poor stance when associated with her. So i had to write to let you all know that Rihanna is well respected here and Yes like any superstar, they will be some pressure placed on you and you will have the few who lash out at you, but that is a few here in B'dos.
Rihanna is awarded many trophies when she comes here at the Music awards, infact she takes home most of them and every time she tours, or gets awards she is highlighted on our local news and newspaper, where she is congratulated repeatedly.

It is therefore understandable why they would be a little disappointed by your decision to follow the masses and portray your young self as a sex symbol. It is my opinion that the people are looking out for you not "hating on you." It is discouraging for you to publicly say the things you said about Barbadians because the difference here is...when you say something bad it WILL be heard by EVERYBODY. If a couple of Bajans talk badly about you, only other Bajans will hear. Do not expect that just because the way you rose to stardom was a fairytale that things will remain as such. To all the bajans that are hating on Rihanna you all disgust me. I am from Barbados and I have always been a proud bajan but after seeing how malevolent you all are I am sooooo ashamed. I can't believe you bajans can disrespect your own kind like that. It's one thing for Americans to say negative things about her but her own should be there to support her regardless if you are a fan of her music or not. Thanks to Rihanna Barbados is more recognized. I live in the US and many times when I told me I was from Barbados they either thought it was somewhere in Africa or Jamaica (stupse). Now I don't have to explain as much where Barbados is located. I am proud of all Bajan artists; Rupee, Allison Hind, Edwin Yearwood. As bajans we need to know how to stick together and be proud of our own. |
