NEW YORK - Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other counts Sunday in the shooting of a woman in a trendy Manhattan neighborhood.
At the rapper's arraignment, a judge granted the prosecution's request for bail to be set at $250,000. Martin was jailed while the judge reviewed her bail offer.
Early Saturday morning, police found a woman with a gunshot wound to her lower torso in the hip Meatpacking District, which is usually crowded with late-night revelers on weekends.
Three blocks away, officers discovered a luxury SUV owned by Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith. The vehicle was involved in a single-car crash and abandoned, police said.
The victim, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, 23, was hospitalized in stable condition Sunday.
Remy Ma turned herself in Saturday night. She was charged with attempted murder, assault and weapon possession.
"I ask everyone to keep an open mind," said Scott Leemon, her attorney. "Things are not always as they seem."
Remy Ma, 26, is promoted on her Web site as an up-from-the-streets artist who escaped the hard-knock life of the Bronx to become a hip-hop star. She was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 summer smash "Lean Back." She also earned the "Best Female Hip-Hop" award at the 2005 BET Awards.
The singer went on to a solo career, releasing last year's debut "There's Something About Remy." She has appeared on recordings with best-selling performers like Fat Joe, Eminem and R. Kelly, according to her Web site.
Chris Landry, president of Sure Shot Recording, which is releasing the rapper's latest album, "The BX Files," next month, said he didn't know anything about the case. "I don't really keep in touch with her," he said.

THe sad thing is that what I like to call "ghetto moms" (u know the type that u see out in the park at 2 in the morn drinking & puffin w/ the baby cariage right next to them or having their toddler watch them getting their haze on when their azz should have that child tucked in their bed) are selfish. I just saw a segment about this on the news, the victims mother and aunt were both interviewed. The mother said her daughter told her that Remy opened the door on the drivers side of her Nissan Maxima and started shooting.
I hope God has mercy on her because the courts won't. She will go to jail for a VERY long time, but at least she'll keep her "street cred". I guess she needed to prove that she's not a "studio gangsta".
According to the news, she crashed her car after the shooting; abandoned it and caught a cab! She probably went right to her attorney.

The 23-year-old was left in stunned horror after Ma allegedly turned a gun on her and opened fire early yesterday.
"Why did she shoot me? What have I done?" Barnes-Joseph cried moments after taking two bullets in the abdomen at close range, according to witnesses.
The pretty Berklee College alum from The Bronx - who is in stable condition - was shot in her car while parked on West 14th and Washington streets.
She had been partying with the rapper, who's real name is Remy Smith, and a large group of pals at the trendy Pizza Bar.
They were celebrating another friend's 25th birthday, but shortly after they left, things got ugly.
Ma, 27, noticed that she was missing money from her bag, police sources said.
They believe Ma accused her friend of taking the money, then confronted her in the car and pumped two bullets into her.
The Castle Hill woman then took off in her dark blue Escalade, cops said.
But her quick getaway was hindered when she crashed into another car a few blocks from the shooting scene.
She hopped out of her vehicle and jumped into a cab, authorities said, leaving her vehicle behind.
Looking tired and disheveled, Ma surrendered with her lawyer at the Sixth Precinct. She was slapped with charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
"Do not jump to conclusions," said her lawyer Scott Leemon. "These are merely allegations and Remy denies them adamantly."
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of Barnes-Joseph gathered at St. Vincent's Hospital to visit the shot woman, who had to have surgery.
"Makeda would never steal from nobody," said her best friend, Roshaun Kraft, 24.
The victim's mother, Christina Barnes, 57, said she is just glad her daughter is alive.
"She [Ma] didn't have a reason to shoot my child," said the mother.
Barnes-Joseph had been excited to go out, and had shown off her white and gold outfit to her mother beforehand, the mom said.
"She said, 'Tell me how I look, Mommy.' I said, 'Yes, you're looking good.'"
Aunt Lorna Joseph, a retired nurse, said the bullet just missed her niece's uterus and kidneys.
Friends and relatives described Barnes-Joseph as a hardworking real-estate broker who loved to let loose on the weekends by hitting the clubs - but she always avoided trouble.
"Young people today are just vicious with that gangster mentality," said her father, Boris Barnes.
"That's supposed to be her friend . . . She always talks about hanging with that girl. That's why I'm so shocked about this."
When he saw his daughter in her hospital bed, she told him, "Dad, I love you. I thought I was going to die."
Friends said Barnes-Joseph and Ma were tight, and that the younger woman had even baby-sat the rapper's kids.
"We were all having a good time and then this happened," said Kevin Wilson, who attended the birthday bash.
Ma was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad - which includes her former mentor, Fat Joe - for the 2004 megahit "Lean Back."

Damn. The only reason I even believe this story is because I already read it in The Post yesterday. What makes the situation so messed up is that the girl she shot was supposed to be her good friend, a friend who's babysat Remy's kids many times in the past. So it's not like she shot someone whom she found threatening in any way. Apparently, Remy thought some money was missing from her purse and, according to The Post, she just rolled up on the girl and shot her twice in the stomach at point blank range. Then she took off in her Caddy truck, crashed it, and took off again in a taxi. If Remy's innocent, taking off sure didn't do anything to help her out. And it's kind of hard for someone you just stood inches away from and shot to mis-identify you. She needs to be tried to the fullest extent of the law, just like anybody else. I don't know what the hell is wrong with these rappers, or what makes them think they can do stupid s-hit and get away with it. Why mess up an entire career over something so stupid, especially when you have kids? Oh well, since she likes to go so hard, she should feel right at home with all the other hard b-itches she's about to be locked away with. It ain't like the rap world's gonna miss her azz. |
