Thank YOU. You really can't blame her when you listen to how black men attack her femininty. She's been dealing with the insults from black men for a long time, and never ONCE, have I heard Venus Williams say anything disrespectful about a black man. I don't want to dog black men out, but many of them are very unstable and unreliable in relationships, not saying that white men are better, but as I reflect on past and present one of the things that irks me abour black men is that they take TOO DAMN LONG to mature. White men are in 8th grade thinking about what they want to do after high shool, while many black men are sitting somewhere playing marbles or something silly--this is not something I heard about, it's something I've seen. I think some brothas need to spend more time getting educated and less time worrying about the next peasce of A** they're gonna get. I have a lot of male black friends and as sson as I try to talk to them about goals and going to the top, they become bored--they all call me talkingabout how big my breasts are and a lot of crap--even older guys who are like 50. Black men NEED TO UNDERSTAND that this world is set-up for you to fail, so you need to come out of the gate (HIGHSCHOOL) with the intention of becoming a succes and not a statistic. It is so bad with black men that I'm considering starting a school--bcause if one more FELON approaches me, I'm going to scream. you have to learn how to be A MAN, not a boy! So I won't say all black men are stupid and unreliable, but my patience has really been tested. If you're over 25, take the braids out of your hair, cut the slang, dress like a respectable young man and pull up your pants and act like you want to be somebody--NO ONE will rspect you if you don't respect you!

I had a Huge crush on Venus Williams growing up. She's a beautiful, statuesque, classy woman. It's always sad when I hear people dogging her, especially people of her own race. She's done a great job representing herself and her race in a predominantly white sport and at the very least she deserves respect. I'm not saying everyone should find her attractive, I'm just saying respect her because she's a respectable person.
For those of you who don't follow tennis, the Williams' have endured A LOT in the way of bad press, hateful fans, booing at their matches. It hasn't been easy for them but they continue to persevere and that to me is both heroic and admirable. While the number of blacks in interracial relationships is small, black men make up the overwhelming majority of those couples. Now I know that not every black man has dated interracially, but it's a little ironic for black men to object to black women doing something that statistically, as a demo, they do far more often than black females.

There is some truth to the "black male shortage" as sistahs progress up the socio-econ ladder, so that leaves them with three options if they want to date a black man like themselves but can't find one. They can date a black man unlike themselves (with less money or education). They can date interracially or be alone. The irony of this, is that black men don't have such a problem, yet black males are in more interracial couples than black females. |

I will; however, say that I am truly saddened by the number of attacks constantly made on this woman and her sister's looks. I realize that hatin' on people is form of enternainment on this site, but these are 2 women who have endured a great deal of controversy and ridicule to accomplish something that only a few people have done in life. You rarely hear of these 2 ladies getting involved in anything negative. Looking at fashion magazines, tv and film roles, men's magazines and like, black women stuggle for visibility in these areas, whereas non-black, particularly white women, are everywhere and black men are not immune to their (non-black women) exposure. Even "black" media goes out of its way to promote a European beauty ideal. Look at the girls in the music videos. Look at the black couples that receive the most media exposure. The ones that get the most coverage involve black men with light skinned and/or non-black women. I still stand by my assertion, though. when it comes to IR's these days black men are setting the tone. Hope you all can handle this…Black men really need to come clean and examine their own pathology. Black men need to delve deep and confront their issues with self hatred. The self-hatred shows up in the hip hop which not only denigrates sistas but black men themselves. Self-hatred shows up in the staggering amount of black on black crime. How else do explain black men killing each other over sneakers or manipulating young black boys to sell, try drugs? Black men’s self hatred issues run so deep it spills over to sistas---an easy target. I’m not saying all black men, but the majority of the dysfunction in the black community points to the fact that black men aren’t pulling their weight. Why is that? It’s largely due to self-hatred. This has always existed, but black men felt a real partnership with black women because of segregation and we as a people made great strides. Now, that there are no restrictions it’s as if it’s open season on black women. We get it from black men in hip hop, we’re subjected to AIDS from irresponsible black men that won’t admit that they’re gay and we get it when they to take themselves and their resources out of the community and marry outside the race while millions of black kids grow up without fathers. Anytime these issues are addressed by prominent black people (i.e. Bill Cosby), black men don’t want to face reality and instead want to blame anyone else—mainly white men or black women….just priceless. The Million Man March accomplished nothing. Black men are still running from their responsibilities. Sistas face it, black men do not have our back.
. Sistas need to realize that black men are becoming less and less of a factor in our lives. While I date different types of men including black men-- I'm not limiting myself. Sistas are exceeding black men in college in record numbers and we are making dramatic gains and strides in the workforce. There are tons and tons of terrific, dynamic, beautiful, successful sistas that are not getting the love they deserve from black men.
Black men have to come to grips with their own self-hatred and stop taking it out on us in hip-hop music, in relationships and any opportunity they get. The whole world sees this and this is why we as a people get no respect. As a group, sistas historically have been loyal, supportive of black men and by and large that has not been reciprocated.
I think it's counter-productive to continue to stress about it. It's a waste of energy to gripe about black men dating outside the race. I'm a successful, beautiful, educated black woman with plenty of dating options. I've travelled all over the world and can tell you that our beauty is appreciated by non-brothas in places like Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Norway, France, Sweden--just to name a few. And these men will treat you like the queen you are. It's so unfortunate that black men condemn black woman for wanting to be treated like every other woman-- we want to be romaced, cherished and adored. But, somehow it gets twisted and we get called gold diggers. Other races are not so quick to call their women gold diggers for wanting comfort in their lives...somehow black men think sistas don't deserve to be treated well. In fact, every white man I've dated has stated his interest in treating me well --since it's no secret that black men do not treat women well. It's a shame that black men aren't more concerned by this reputation. Is this the legacy they want to leave? That this is the generation of black men that has decided to degrade, exploit and demoralize the black women who have been the backbone of the black community and more than likely the backbone of their own families? Black men are really becoming obsolete. With the staggering numbers who end up in jail or are on the down low--the numbers just aren't in our favor. Sistas, wake up and realize we have other options. There are plenty of men of other races that would love the opportunity to enter in relationships if we give them a chance. This generation of black men aren't really there for us. But, there are plenty of non-black men that are wonderful, respectful, hard-working and faithful---we owe it to ourselves to explore. |

how do you know that's true, about light skinned black women selling more product? Why are you so certain of that? Are the girls selling the music or are the artists selling the music? Do album sales depend upon how fair or mixed race looking a video girl is? For all of 50 Cent's mysoginy, he features black women of many shades as "it" girls in his videos. My younger cousin just got a Chris Brown retrospective DVD, and I had never really watched his videos before, but I noticed a colorist theme in what the women looked like. Most of the "featured" girls were light, mixed race looking, or hispanic/non-black. If you look at the world of high fashion, the top, black models are very ethnic/African looking. There's a biracial one right now, half black and Korean, but she's not quite as known or as famous as Naomi, Alek Wek, Liya Kibede, Tyra, Oluchi etc. These women manage to sell products to white people all the time. Selita Ebanks (Tyra's replacement as the "black Victoria's secret model) isn't selling as many undies to white women as Tyra did, and she's lighter than Tyra. |

Judging by the comments posted by the boys here. I see some self hatred. Why are you guys calling Venus ugly?
I came across a White gentlemen and we got into a conversation about pretty women versus other (Ok looking person). He clearly stated he would never date a women for their looks, why? he does not want to be concerned about whether or not she will cheat because all she'll be about is her looks and herself. Now for Black men, I don't understand the self hatred for your own kind and its scary. Its 2007 and we talk about how racism still exists, well guess what we still talk down about our own kind and we go around justifying equal rights. |

But we’re not talking about individual female artists. We’re talking about video girls, who are more or less shills or props anyway. So what evidence can you provide that light skinned/mixed-race/non-black video girls contribute to the bottom line of album sales? You can’t really. You can only speculate. 50 featured a brown skinned girl in his Wanksta video and Get Rich or Die Trying was his best selling disc ever, but you would never credit the girl with the album’s success. So if album sales of hip-hop artists are not dependent upon how light the props/girls are, then what’s driving the trend? Maybe it’s casting directors, not consumers. What white person is buying a rap cd because of the girls in the video? I don’t think this is a trend that white consumers are fueling. |

Having worked in the juvenile justice system and child welfare system, trust me, the dysfunction that does exist in our community is SHARED and black women contribute equally to it with black men....

I'm not a basher of black men. I happen to care deeply for black men. However, black men overwhelming are putting the black community at risk by irresponsible, damaging behavior leaving the responsibility of the survival of Black America squarely on the shoulders of Black women. Black women are frustrated and hurt. We are not mules.We see ever other race of men proactively creating a future for their communities and our men faltering, not accepting responsibility and in the process turning their backs on us. Why should Black women tolerate this?? To say that the dysfuntion is SHARED by both Black men AND Black women is laughable. Any expert, historian, pundit, intellectual, etc would agree that the Black man is not pulling their weight. Statistics are what they are. In fact, if it weren't for the strides made by Black women, our community would be in a more abysmal state than it is already. Your response doesn't suprise me...what other group of men looks to blame their women for their communities downfall and shortcomings? Really, when has that ever happened in history? Black men have a unique habit of displaying little responsibility yet pointing the finger at everyone but themselves.
1) What other group of men finds sport in degrading their women and then tries to justify it as artistic expression?
2) What other group of men abandons their children in such staggering numbers?
3) What other group of men glorifies criminal behavior as being cool and belittles academic behavior as being nerdy?
4) What other group of men has dispropotianately put women at risk of AIDS due to irresponsible Down Low behavior?
5) What other group of men idolizes the Eurocentric ideal of beauty, regards their women as beautiful if they are close to that ideal and marginalizes them if they are not, and eventually seeks that Euro ideal while leapfrogging over their own educated, beautiful, caring women in such record numbers?
Black women have been loyal to Black men for so long (and most still are). That loyalty is not given to us. I would say this recent movement of Black women looking outside the race in large numbers is a recent phenomenon. Largely, it's not out of desire, it's out of necessity, accessibility and to some degree rejection by Black men. Ask a sista in Minneaplois---Black women are pretty much invisible to Black men. This scenario is repeated in many other parts of the country. Why should black women be alone and loyal to a Black man who has decided that Black women are out of style? |

Let me run through your list:
1) Who by and large are the forces behind the porn industry? White men...Do a little googling and you will see plenty of blond haired, blue eyed "eurocentric" looking women involved in some of the most vile activities possible. Additionally, Britney Spears as a teenage girl in a school girl outfit was not the creation of black men.....Paris Hilton with no panties was not the creation of black men....Hugh Heffner and the people behind Maxim, Stuff and FHM are not black...So please, sexism is NOT the creation or province of Black men...White men established the sexist dichotomy, and they profit plenty off of objectification of their women.
2)You are taking a class issue and making it a race issue. You see more child abandonment by fathers in poor, underprivileged communities across racial lines. Hell, I grew up in rural Appalachia....The majority of the white kids I grew up with didnt know who their fathers were, or werent involved with them. ...So let not buy into the White male "Father Knows Best" image. Its bunk....Middle class men and Upper class men..Even working class men are statistically more involved with their kids...Men in the poorest parts of society arent, and that is true across racial lines...
3) Once again, class more than race....Go into poor communities in rural white america and check the test scores and graduation rates....Go look at the test scores of the children of the Black middle class....
4)The myth of the "DL Brotha" and the skewered statistics were pushed out as just another way to villify Black men. This is a whole different, more detailed conversation....Lets just say that since JL King or whatever that fairy's name was came out, there have been some sound medical research authorities that have poked holes in this phenomenon and showed how the "numbers" are easily manipulated and inaccurate. I am more than willing to share the research and sources on this one.
5) All I can say to this one is, what brothas are you dealing with? This is a HUGE generalization....I dont think its fair to take the handful of brothas in Minneapolis and Seattle and showcase them as the norm when you have Black men in Black Enterprises Top 10 cities for black professionals overwhelmingly marrying Black women. Botton line is that Black men still overwhelmingly marry Black women (94% around the time of the last census I believe) so we arent doing THAT much idolizing...
If Black women can't find a man, then I think she needs to look in the mirror and look at the men she's approaching and the men she's passing by....Take some personal accountability rather than bashing a whole gender as a whole, and the same goes for Black men. If people date interracially, that's cool, but that is a CHOICE that is made. And its a choice that should not be justified by bashing your own race. |

There are so many gross generalizations about different groups going on. You will find the good, the bad, and the ugly in EVERY group-black men, white men, black women, white women.
The reality is in alot of places(like where I"m from), people from different races date with little to no stigma attached. I realize some posters here are from very different places where there's alot more stigma attached. But that doesn't mean Venus is coming from the place you are coming from. So, you it's hard to judge her motivations for her dating a white man--just as it is to judge the motivations for her white fiancee dating her.
There is no need to take it personally when someone dates outside their race. Our race in America has always been mixed, as has the white race in America. And it only will get more mixed with time as interracial dating becomes the norm more and moret-the train's left the station people! |

My questions is this: Who the hell was she suppose to date?! All the brothers in Hollywood are either gay or dating white/misc. women.
She's damned if she do, damned if she dont. I for one think this nothing wrong w/ Venus Williams. I can see, however, how she would get caught up and date a white man. Everyone on this site and other blacks around the country are so confused and hate themselves so much they cant appreciate a dark skinned sistah.
I wish she could find a brother, but at the end of the day i'm sure this man makes her happy and isn't putting her down because of her complexion.

Wow! You amaze me...Do you not agree that there are behaviors that need to be adressed and confronted in the black community--particulary where black men are concerned? It's amazing to me how you can rationalize every shortcoming by saying it's the white man who has perpetuated or created it. The fact that white men are behind the porn industry does not negate the fact that black men exploit black women which is overall far more detrimental to our community. The depiction and reference of black women as "bitches and hos" is extremely damaging to the psyche of not only black women but also black men. If you don't respect the women within your culture how can you respect yourself or expect anyone else to? If that is the prevailing image, what does that say about our values as a people? That image is promoted all over the world. All of the empirical evidence shows that this is clearly damaging to our community. The plain fact is that we are not on the same playing field as White America, so pathologies and dysfunction have a more debilitating effect on us. When you say other men abandon their children--it's no where near the extent that occurs in Black America. More than 70% of black children are raised without fathers. No other community has numbers even approaching that. It's reached epidemic proportions. Many Black fathers are not paying child support.This has long reaching effects on the future of Black America. If no other problem were eradicated in our community besides repairing the Black family structure--that alone would be huge. That alone would rectify so much in our crumbling communities. We cannot continue saying "White folks do it too" to justify pathologies in our community. We have to do better.
By the way, you're not fooling anybody by saying Black men don't overwhelming prefer lighter skinned black women.We've already established this and there are countless accounts and evidence to substantiate this. Besides the requisite music videos, there are films, books,songs, tv shows in addition to data and random polling of your average black man. On the other hand, black women are quite vocal of their appreciation of black men with many expressing a strong preference for darker skinned brothas. You can't convince me, yourself or anyone else otherwise. There is the occasional successful brotha that has a dark skinned sista on his arm but that clearly is the exception. While we're at it, you may as well fess up that there are countless black men with a strong preference for white, Asian, Hispanic women to the exclusion of black women. Or the brotha that will say "I don't see color, I'm colorblind, I date the rainbow...etc" (yet, it's anyone but a black women) This desire runs deep in black men. The classic book "Soul On Ice" by Eldridge Cleaver (a Black Panther no less) illustrated this. He was quite poetic in his lust for any woman that wasn't black and his disdain and contempt for black women. Many of his friends, colleagues, etc expressed the same views. There's a new book titled "Why Black Men Love White Women" (you can find it online) that breaks this down quite well. Once again, the flip side of this is that black women are NOW looking beyond black men generally not out of preference,or not seeing beauty in blackness (like black men do)---but out of necessity and realizing that hey, maybe we're entitled to being treated well and cherished like other women. If we're not getting from black men then we have a right to look elsewhere like everyone else. If black men displayed the loyalty we show them, black women would rarely even consider it. If black women didn't feel maligned and marginalized then they would rarely give it a second thought.
A little background on myself, I graduated from one of the finest universities in the country, was born and bred in NYC, have traveled all over the world, I've modeled since my pre-teen years and am a successful businesswoman. I've overwhelming dated and preferred black men throughout my life. However, men of other races have always pursued me and I've dated them on occasion. I've never been at a loss for a man and I'm currently in a stable, healthy relationship. During the course of my studies, travels and experiences I've witnessed the way men of all races treat women and have usually not been pleased with where black men generally rank on that scale. Don't get me wrong, being in NYC I move in circles of upwardly mobile black folks. I know some black couples that are doing well. But, it's not the majority. Black men tend to be extremely phobic about marriage especially to a black woman. More and more, upwardly mobile, progressive black men are not choosing a black woman as the woman they want on their arm. On the other hand, among my friends of other races it is far more commonplace to get married and settle down and the baby mama/baby daddy phenomenon is non-existent.
My point is, more and more black women feel like it's time we get the treatment we deserve, to think of our own preservation instead of sacrificing happiness and feeling beholden to our families, churches,community, etc while the honorable, respectful, black men is nowhere to be found. |

There are behaviors that need to be addressed in the black community and black women are not blameless in those behaviors! Stop looking at it like black women are as a whole these paragons of virtue and perfection that are dragged down by the evil black man. You are vilifying your own men!!! And in the process buying into the Willie Lynch mentality.
It just sounds like you have bought into this notion that society and the media love to perpetuate....that EVERY problem in society is the problem of the black man....No matter what it is, its the black man's fault, its hip-hops fault...This society has always placed its foot on the neck of the black man....and to see black women buying in and joining in is hurtful and just wrong.
Every generalization you have thrown at Black men, those same characteristics apply to many, many black women..and many men and women of other races and backgrounds. They just arent harped on over and over....Because its Black men that have been made into the scapegoat for society's ills...And Black women have not just stood idly by and watched this happen to us, they seem to be gleefully joining in!
I have Soul on Ice in the bookshelf right behind me. And the fact that you would pick that book out of all the ones written during that time period....Most of which exalted the beauty of black women...Shows that you, unfortunately, have fallen into the same pattern as most of white america: Seeing only the worst in black men while glossing over and ignoring the positives.
Good black men are out there...Educated black men are out there...And the statistics show that the majority of them are married to Black women. If black women cant find them or cant keep them, then they need to look in the mirror and have some self analysis. But that takes personal accountability and responsibility...and why should people do that when they can just throw their brothas under the bus.
And for the record, do not assume that just because I am a brotha with locks and some tattoos that I am somehow not, as you describe yourself, educated and successful. I have a law degree, my own business in the black community, am on the board of a nonprofit that does work in the black community, have set foot on 4 continents with number 5 coming this spring. But to you, I am a myth evidently because black men like myself dont exist..lol |

Just like Rihanna, who had issues with her drug addicted father, growing up in Barbados. Venus and Serena have similar daddy issues. Venus probably more than Serena, since she she's the oldest and clearly not as mentally strong as Serena is. If you followed their tennis careers, you'd know exactly what I'm saying. Venus would self-destruct on the regular, in big matches. There father was sort of a stern, Joe Jackson type, who taught them the game of tennis, on the public asphalt courts in LA. I also heard Richard Williams mistreated their mother, that's why they divorced several years back. Since, they separated and divorced, you don't even see their father with them anywhere, only their mother.
I will always stand by my theory, that many black women that prefer white men, tend to have a dysfunctional relationship with their fathers or no relationship at all. AmeriKKKan society espouses on the daily, that black men are the lowest, most reviled creatures walking the Earth. So, if you don't have a positive black role model in your life to counteract this subconscious brainwashing, especially a father, you'll probably fall victim to this white male superiority ethos. That's not to say this happens 100% of the time, but I find more than not, this to be a common thread in sistas who run behind white men. |

I'll admit, if the father is a deadbeat, the mother's job will be 5X harder. Especially, with a male child growing up in a poverty stricken violence riddled environment. However, I work around a LOT of sistas, in the age range of 20 to 45. Many of these sistas have children, yet too many are talking this thug, ruffneck shyt. How are you going to raise a productive and proud black man, when you're bringing thugs and hustlers home all the damn time. Most single black woman (that's not to excuse these sorry negroes that don't care for their children) do not teach their children any "knowledge of self". Then you'll cackle about self-hating black men. Maybe, if they were taught self-love and pride in the home, the way black men relate with other brothas and our sistas, would be more positive. I have a cousin who only dates biracial, light skinned latin or white women. Many sistas on MTO would call him sorry. However, I grew up with him. My aunt constantly made and is still making derogatory comments about black people, in our presence. Almost reminds me of that ignorant foster mother from "Antwon Fisher". She would straighten his hair with a hot comb when we were young, to the point he would be reduced to tears from the pain. So sistas, you are complicit in this B.S too.
