Hello In the past previous week, I have made a terrible mistake. I am in a new town, with new people doing some job training. A friend of mine, who is African American, which I am not.. decided to put together a party. We were going to have it on M.L.K. Day and have the common "stereotypical" foods. ( i.e fried chicken, cornbread, red kool-aid etc. ) Other culutues were to be in attendance as well. It was never my intent to intentionally offend some, or their culure, which given the evidence I can imagine where that is hard to believe, and for that I deeply regret posting an invite for this event to the public. It wasnt to my knowlege that it was for the public eye to see, and for that I am very sorry. I have been swarmed with emails, and voicemails, even threats concerning this matter. I have canceled the event, and taken down the event off of facebook, even took myself off of it as well. The party was more for an ice breaker, for all os here who dont really know one another, and members from all cultures were coming. It was only a small group of us, under 10 people, but that doesn't make it any better. Or right. I was hoping to somehow have this email forwarded to your community, in hopes that people will realize people make mistakes, and there are consequences, as having everyone think I am an ignornant racist, and being swawmed with messages. If you knew me, you would know I am not a racial, or ignorant person by any means, just someone who made a huge mistake and not thinking it all the way through and who i could have offended in the process. I truly hope my appology is spread to all of the individuals I have hurt and offended in this matter. I never meant for this to happen, or to come to this, and it is definetly not my proudest moment. I can only ask for forgiveness.

It's funny I live in NYC and lately a lot of white folks have been moving here to Harlem where I live. And no one bothers then. They go to the movies with us, restaurants, shopping etc and we do not bother them. Not that we should because well this is America. Land of the free. BTW, a lot of the reason blacks have issues with white women being with black men is based on stigma. In slavery times, as I'm sure you know, the master or the masters wife would rape, and consume a black woman/man. Sometimes making her(or him) his/her secret love...meanwhile, the slave would be killed if found out, and not one white had the power to stop it, even if they conffesed their love...in which, if money came into play, there would be no love conffesion. The stigma is strong, and it also blends into blacks always having things taken away from them by whites, ie. Africa, their own bodies, and out original riches. So to see our men or women with someone white (who in the past and present has such disdain for us) secretly hurts, and time and secret ignorance doesn't change years of pain. Just an FYI :). |

And that was for those of you who can't grasp the concept of stupidity. First of all, I'd like to state my position in this completely biased and uneducated conversation. I'm a 21 year old white woman, who has been with black men, been cool with several black women, and has two half black brothers.
I don't understand how people can still hold that "what white people's ancestors did to the negroes" argument to be valid. This is 2008. Let go of that single-minded mentality and work towards a better future for us all. I don't condone racism, in fact I happen to be 100% against it. I don't condone the use of the N word, ask the people who have said it around me. They get politely asked not to use that word around me, and if they continue to do so, will not be allowed in my presence.
This argument can go round and round. "Whites did this or said this about black people." "Blacks did this or said this about white people." For this particular argument, I'll stick to using blacks and whites only, as this came to be because of a white person stereotyping "black food." This post wasn't intended as an outlet for black people to poke fun about all the racist [EXPLETIVE] white people have done to blacks. So what, you got made fun of for your skin tone? I attended a school where black people were "dominant," if you will. I was the minority there, as well as any other white person. We suffered just as well. We all have different racist experiences, but it all comes back to STUPIDITY.
Profit from experience. My take on that is that we should learn (profit) from the past (experience.) How is one to "learn from the past" if we can't move on? If we can't let go of the STUPID things our races have done to one another?

I know I said I was done but there is something I have to say to a comment I received claiming that being called a [EXPLETIVE] isn't as offensive to a white person as the N word is to a black person. I don't know what season it was in but he did a skit where a white family was named [EXPLETIVE]. NO WHITE PERSON IN THE WORLD WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO SUCH A THING, nor would they have tried to. BET- where every other comic that gets on the comicview stage pokes fun at white people and there are plenty of white people in the audience laughing but I am real doubtful that there is a white comedian that would be able to go on stage and make the same kind of jokes about a black person without being called a racist. What about the movie White Girls????? And how about the title to Nas' new CD 'N*****'..... how about him [EXPLETIVE] using the racist word himself, but just like with DON DOG, majority of black people on this website will defend his right to say it but whats going to happen when a white boy walks in to Best Buy and asks for it by name? Someone going to beat his ass? Probably...I believe that white people have had to become OVERLY PC and black people don't have to at all. people want to fight so hard to be considered equal in this country then stop setting yourselves apart, how many posts listed above are saying they aren't racist and in the next line insulting white people? THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE HATEFUL RACIST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD IS TO STOP BEING ONE YOURSELF! We need to make ourselves equal to one another, and we can only do that with uniformity. In no way, shape, or form is being called a derogatory term any worse for blacks than it is for one race or another. It all hurts the same, and it all has the same effect. It seems to me that you are trying to make people understand something that is incomprehensible. People don't get plastic surgery because they "want to look black," or tan or eat certain foods to be like you. Your race is so vain. Not saying that some people don't do it for that reason, but other things, like fashion, media, trends, factor into those decisions as well. I have yet to see one person who tans that "got black" from it. We turn bronze, almost even orange. I doubt your flattered from that. I grew up on what you refer to as soul food, just because my mom loves to cook different things. I've been with black men, not because of the size of their d*ck, or because I wanted to one up a black girl, but because there was mutual attraction. Sure, there are some whites that try to hold blacks down, but don't define us all into one category. Some of us would actually like to see the black race be just as equal as everyone else. After reading some of your post, to me, you are one of the poeple that only read 4 pages of a book and say it's garbage. After all that I've written, this is all you gather? A. I said not all white people are like this. B. I AM both races. I'm lucky, I get to look at it from 2 standpoints, and I still make my extremely valid point. I have been called [EXPLETIVE] on a few occasions, and N*gger on a few occasions. The word N*gger hurt more because it has way too many years of pain and negativity attached to it. If you are not black, you have no worries, and no way to understand regardless of what you think. Persoanlly, I'm not ending up anywhere. I don't dislike the whites or blacks because that's who I am. I just state facts, and if you or any other person on this site (white, black, other), don't like it, I encourage you to take it up with your local complaint department. The color of peoples skin doesn't effect my day or my bowel movements. The food you're refering to as Soul Food, is just plain food...it, of course has a stigma because it was thought up of by slaves, but enjoyed by their masters. I don't have an argument for this, HELL, I didn't even bring it up. I'm just saying, to you, read everything I wrote and then talk to me like you understood. Reading the comments on this post has proven enlightening in some respects. Yes, this young woman is prejudiced, because she stereotyped an entire group of people based upon the color of their skin. A number of posters here are stereotyping anyone who is white based sheerly upon the color their skin.
Prejudice (I think racism isn't inclusive enough of what drives discrimination) sucks, and if you look around, it's still incredibly prevalent. Look all over the world, and you'll see prejudice in its purest form in the Sudan, in what used to be Yugoslavia, in northern Iraq/southern Turkey, and yes, definitely here in the U.S. Take a gander at Pakistan's ongoing struggle with India, and you'll see a very fresh (historically speaking) example.
I moved to New Orleans from south Florida (which is arguably as diverse an area as southeastern Louisiana) last year, and felt like I had stepped into a time warp. Are y'all familiar with Central City? That's where I live. That's where my life has been threatened...just because I'm white. (I wish I were kidding.) Where my neighborhood in south Florida was diverse (white, black, Brazilian, Haitian, Cuban, etc.), it feels like the 1950's here in NOLA sometimes - which is a damned shame, given that this city is historically one of the most culturally rich this country has to offer. (DonDog, if you meant NOLA when you reference the Chocolate City, you're not kidding - the city that gave us Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, Irvin Mayfield, etc. is among the most segregated places I have ever seen.)
I admit to a certain naivete as I approach 30, but my parents made a point to teach me from infancy on that everyone is human, and what they look like, how they worship, and who they fall in love with doesn't matter. Maybe I'm in the minority in truly believing that, but hey, I'll hold on to that idealism, because it's definitely a lot better than letting vitriol, mistrust and ignorance guide my life as past generations (like my ancestors) did.
My real point is that when one generalizes all whites by the actions of this ignorant woman, one is guilty of the very same action. As we approach MLK Day, I'd hope we could all reflect on his words. He was an eloquent and powerful man, and the world is better for having had him, even if for a tragically short period of time.
