I'm not sure how they got into this situation, but it's ashame that with all the wealth and celebrities here in Altanta that no one has stepped up to donate money or pay the whole balance off. $380,000 is nothing to people with millions of dollars. We're talking about a historical college that was close to shutting its doors. |

MTO's addition of "ghetto" in the title is an issue of respect. This college having 'a history of financial trouble' is not justification for the addition of 'ghetto' in the title. There's nothing 'ghetto' about being so badly affected by the economy that you can't pay your bills. If so, are the millions of whites that are unable to pay their bills, have no home, and/or frequenting soup kitchens because of the economy 'ghetto'? No. Just like MBC, that makes them badly affected by the economy.

How does the first African American college, a college that should be run with DOUBLE the pride of other schools, fall back on their water bill that dates back 4 years?
Where they riding on the hopes of sympathy?
For this college to go downhill like this and it's an historical Black college is shameful and embarrassing. Who are the overseers where is the Alumni?
I would NOT go to such a college, imagine Morris Brown College on your resume. Geesh! |

@atldrick: Put the blame where it belongs and its not with MTO but with the administrators and Board of Trustees at Morris Brown. This school has been mismanaged for years and having your utilities shut off is the end result of that.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Fisk U. next in line to shut its doors. Last year they attempted to sell expensive art that was donated years ago by a family. Fisk needed money bad to pay bills and the art was their last resort. However, the family found out and sued. Now Fisk can't sell the paintings at all, now or in the future. I believe the art work will eventually be returned to the family too. The nerve of that school. A valuable donation like that doesn't come daily.
Many of the presidents and trustees for HBCU are inept and should be removed. They've sullied the reputations of prestigous institutions. |

FOCUS PREACH! People don't seem to know the financial history of this school. And it's RECENT!!!! The black community, ATL's elite and non-elite pulled this school out of the hole a few years ago to keep it's doors from being shut. The President of the school is now in prison for taking millions. The workers in the financial aid office were taking out loans in the students names to live grand lifestyles. These poor students didn't know about these things until it was on the news. Now you have so many kids with mucked up credit reports all because they were trying to get an education. I don't support that so let the school sink. Obviously, they can't say they were uplifting the community by producing students who'd be able to work and make a difference upon graduation with meaningless degrees! |

They have like 20 students, a random financial crisis every few years- if this were any other business you all would be saying they should fail. This school needs to fail, it's ridiculous. If the alumni and other leaders in the community believed in the school, then they would jump in to save them. What business can't keep up with the water bill, that is just trifling. |

The school’s accreditation was yanked after a financial scandal that left Morris Brown deep in debt, with no federal funding and few students.
Former president Dolores Cross pled guilty in federal court to embezzlement for misusing school financial aid funds. She could face prison time when she is sentenced this August. Her chief financial officer at the time, Parvesh Singh, was also found guilty and could also end up in jail.
Both admitted to acquiring federal financial aid money for students who weren’t actually enrolled on campus. The money was used to help keep the institution financially afloat, not for personal gain.
The events of Cross’ tenure, from 1998 to 2002, was the final straw for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools, which stripped the school of its accreditation status in December 2002. That move
left students unable to receive federal financial aid funds — at an institution where 90 percent of the students relied on some sort of aid.
So Morris Brown, an institution reveling in newfound fame from a movie depicting it as a bustling cradle of intelligentsia, is now just struggling to survive. The lights are on in only a few of the campus’ buildings and less than 70 students were studying on campus during the last academic year.
“It’s obviously in dubious shape,” says Virgil Hodges, a 1953 graduate and member of the school’s board of trustees.
Since its beginnings in 1881, Georgia’s only college started by and for Blacks, has prided itself on accepting students who were “diamonds-in-the-rough” and turning out highly polished graduates.
Some of those graduates include Pulitzer Prize-winning author James McPherson and Dr. Hosea Williams, one of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s main foot soldiers in the civil rights movement.
But Morris Brown’s main reclamation project over the years has been the school itself.
Financial hardship has historically dogged the school, while less than a mile away, Morehouse and Spelman continually court deep-pocketed donors and maintain multimillion-dollar endowments. |

I was about to attend Morris Brown right before they lost their acredidation(hoped I spelled it right). The school is not ghetto and a lot of elite black american students attend that school! But from what I remember, the financial problem started with the school about 7 years ago. My friends from high school when their and they had to drop out because of the finacial problems of the school. No offense, but the person who run's this web cite is a African! He is black, but he is not Black American! Now Africans to me are out brother's and sister's, but he is just using this webcite to make money. You see, the asians, and the africans use black americans to make money off of use sadly. The African women come here and braid hair and charge the sister's a arm and a leg and the asians come here and sell us our own hair products and their food. No hate, but people use black american people a lot! We spend like 600 billion dollars, before the recession, in this economy but many of us dont run our own business! Now a lot of black do own their own business, but we need more. Even though I am on this cite sometimes, The man who made this cite is just keeping up stuff by calling our black american instituition "Ghetto", but they are quick to shake our hand! |

We should not worry about if they are talking about us. In Atlanta, their was a white instituion that was threatened to close and the school was having big financial problems. You see, when its black, they put our sh*t on blast to make themselves look better! They have problems in some of their schools but they hide it! They just like to air out black "dirty Laundry" to make themselves look good, no hate, but its the way the system work! |
