But you gotta remember - 99% of musicians, artists, performers, or entertainers who are considered to be geniuses, prodigies, or even exceptional (and not just "good") have issues with drugs, alcohol, mental health, etc. (EXAMPLE: Billie Holiday was a heroin junkie, Jimi Hendrix overdosed, and Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill suffered from depression) It's hard being gifted.

WHICH is the VERY reason, i tip my hat off to Lauryn Hill b/c while she never mentioned she was depressed on her MTV unplugged special, she constantly referred back to God and his annointing on her life. so while she was away from the music scene for a while, i CAN only assume that God was moving in her life. she is a new person: refreshed and blessed, when she cried on TV, that was the BENEDICTION! Lauryn Hill will change the game for a lot of artists. It's not about us, it's about God ;-)

Not to get all preachy on MTO (but then again, most of the subjects on MTO deserve to be preached about, LOL), but it's even harder to be blessed with being gifted if you don't know from whence cometh your help...and if the stories about all these artists ain't enough, even I got a testimony!!
BTW, I heard about Lauryn's troubles thru various magazine articles, and the TV show "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" on E had an episode that featured her which touched on it lightly as well. The 'Unplugged' album was a celebration of breaking though one of the darker periods of her sadness.
And I'd heard about Nina a loooong time ago, but here's a clip from an Internet biography I found on her that mentions it -
"Simone had a reputation in the music industry for being volatile and sometimes difficult to deal with, a characterization with which she strenuously took issue. In 1995, she reportedly shot and wounded her neighbour's son with a pneumatic pistol after his laughing disturbed her concentration.[8] She also fired at a record company executive whom she accused of stealing royalties.[9] It is now recognised that this 'difficulty' was not just the result of an over-exacting artistic rigour, but her raging outbursts and diva-like extremes were actually the result of a medical condition, possibly clinical depression or borderline personality disorder, for which Simone had to take medication."

on a serious note depression is no joke and when i look at amy's pics, i can only shake my head. she does look worn-out, but sometimes you you catch folk at the wrong time, but as i type this i'm remembering the very first time i saw her perform on an aol session, i was like, she looks a little disoriented. so, maybe she does have a drug problem. but the girl is talented!

One thing about it, people are always talking about people needing to be original, and damned if some us forget that nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, is original now. Everyone has inspiration from somewhere. Joss and Amy aren't the first young British white women with a deep, soulful voice because there was Helen Shapiro.
As far as artists going through things, not too many artists today haven't had something weighing heavy on them. You don't have to be old to have issues. Amy admitted in interviews that she had relationship problems. How many of us have had those type of problems? Exactly. The problem is everyone copes differently. Some people sing, some people drink, and some people do worse.
All I do know is that she has a lot of talent and we should hope that it doesn't go to waste in the bottle. However, she does look like the type of chick that Gil Scott Heron sang about:
