I think there is a big difference between runnin a label and being a producer. Dupri has shown that he is better at running a label than Jay Z. SoSo Def has on top of the rap world for most of the 90's. SoSo Def did end up going bankrupt so that is a huge black eye on Dupri's resume, but he does have a lot of experience running a label.

The biggest thing Jay did was sign Kanye, and he probably used that as a bargaining chip to get the job.

Difference between MJ and Jay Z is the fact that when MJ was playing, he gave up his duties as president and general manager.

Def Jam has always been a hot label, Jay Z came into a situation that was already set.

Ne Yo was already on the roster when Jay got there. AKeys has been on the label and was due to drop another album.

The only big thing he did was bring along Kanye to Def Jam, which was probably the main reason that they hired him

I don't know if it is true or not, but if Def Jam is artificially inflating the sales of Kanye and Jay, so you can dispute whether or not those are successful albums. Also you have to take a look at whether or not those albums are making money. All the promotions and videos are essentially paid by Def Jam. a million dollar video eats up a lot of the profits an album makes.

Then there is the thing of Def Jam laying 10,000 people before the holidays. Could be due to the change of music formats, bootlegging etc, but at the end of the day it happened on Jay Z's watch.
