I think there is a big difference between runnin a label and being a producer. Dupri has shown that he is better at running a label than Jay Z. SoSo Def has on top of the rap world for most of the 90's. SoSo Def did end up going bankrupt so that is a huge black eye on Dupri's resume, but he does have a lot of experience running a label.
The biggest thing Jay did was sign Kanye, and he probably used that as a bargaining chip to get the job.

Difference between MJ and Jay Z is the fact that when MJ was playing, he gave up his duties as president and general manager.
Def Jam has always been a hot label, Jay Z came into a situation that was already set.
Ne Yo was already on the roster when Jay got there. AKeys has been on the label and was due to drop another album.
The only big thing he did was bring along Kanye to Def Jam, which was probably the main reason that they hired him
I don't know if it is true or not, but if Def Jam is artificially inflating the sales of Kanye and Jay, so you can dispute whether or not those are successful albums. Also you have to take a look at whether or not those albums are making money. All the promotions and videos are essentially paid by Def Jam. a million dollar video eats up a lot of the profits an album makes.
Then there is the thing of Def Jam laying 10,000 people before the holidays. Could be due to the change of music formats, bootlegging etc, but at the end of the day it happened on Jay Z's watch. |

Maybe you need to check the archives because Jay Z was at the top of that list, that's right, the first name on the list. That list was strictly based on rap sales in 2006, and didn't even include all his other endorsement deals or the money he was making from Def Jam or from ownership of the Nets. Furthermore, it was established and published a couple of years ago that Jay was worth well over $300 million, and that was 2 years ago. So he probably is worth around $500 million today. Oh, and don't forget it hasn't even been a year since he sold Rocawear for $240 million in one pop. Sorry you underestimate (or refuse to acknowledge) the man's wealth, but it is what it is. |

I'm so not surprised. I'm actually happy. Jay-Z sucked as President of Def Jam, especially if you compare what he did to Lyor Cohen (look at how many years Lyor ran the label). Def Jam really should have seen that the only person moving units at Roc-A-Fella was Jay-Z. Jay-Z had no loyalty to any of the artists at the label other than (maybe) Kanye. We see how he sold Damon Dash out. What he did makes enemies and I'm surprised he's not a mark for it.
Jay-Z is too egotistical. It's a conflict of interest to have an artist's ego and run a label. If you've retired, be that. Take some of your energy and focus it either on younger artists or semi-established artists who he could flourish with greater exposure and major label support. That's what a great President would do and that is the antithesis of what Joe Camel did.

Jay didn't sign Teairra Marie, Damon Dash's goofy a$$ did - so the blame for the horrible production and promotion on her album rests solely on Dame's shoulders.
I would be more inclined to believe that Jay was the one that decided not to continue on at Def Jam as President. Don't know why, but I have a feeling he's either planning to go back to recording full-time, or focusing on Roc-A-Fella itself rather than staying on at the helm of it's parent company.

Im ji glad for defjam for making this move, becuz it was a smart one. just look at there artist's record sales. rihanna nor neyo has sold a million units even tho rihanna is certified platinum. bobby valentino's album which was really good by the way didnt sale becuz there was no promo, and his first album was either approaching platinum status or did go platinum. jay has way to many obligations to try to run such a prestigious position such as being the head of a major record label. and everybody keeps talking about janet but truth be told she sales albums. at her least she'll go platinum how many female artist these days with tons of hits and airplay along with publicity can even do that. janet did this without airplay and lack of video support. she sold double what rihanna did. her album was underpromoted as well. rihanna has so much publicity and a ton of hits and airplay and she can barely reach platinum status. in reality her album kinda flopped. island/def jam has far more than just hiphop artist on it. it needs to be ran by someone who can take the job on like a pro and promote all the artist not just ones they choose to. jay has way to much on his plate anyway. hell be aite. but like somebody said they try to promote rihanna like she is so huge. lmao she cant sale her way out of a wet paper bag. as huge as umbrella was u would have thought that by now her album would atleast be 2x platinum and she aint even close. and jd does know this business very well. but i think that he will just run the urban department of def jam. |
