: Two weeks ago MediaTakeOut.com told you that Def Jam would not be extending Jay Z's contract and yesterday the platinum selling rapper made it official. We also told you that Columbia/Sony would not be offering him a job at their label. In a statement released by his publicist, Jay Z officially confirmed all of our reporting. Here's how the Associated Press is reporting it:
Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter said Monday that he will leave his post as president of Universal Music Group's Def Jam Records label after his contract expires this year.. But there's more. MediaTakeOut.com can EXCLUSIVELY report to you that before weeks end, the label will announce that Jermaine Dupri is the new head of Def Jam Records.The rapper said in a statement that he'll keep churning out music for his record label, Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam.
Carter, who was named president of Def Jam three years ago, said it was time for him to "take on new challenges."

That job belongs to Irv Gotti. People may laugh but he saved Def Jam once before and in the process made Russell and Lyor very rich men. He's the only one left from the real Def Jam and he's a proven winner as producer and HIP HOP exec. JD is a copycat. He made some money but he's a copycat dude who lacks originality. One minute he's mini puff then he's westcoast then he's crunk. I don't know who the hell the real JD is musically. He waits for trends to pop then jump on the bandwagon. DEf Jam needs a trendsetter who knows HIP HOP. Irv is from Hollis and that's another plus. Who better to inherit Russell's throne than the kid from Queens who did over a hundred dollars in billing for Def Jam? People forget how crucial Irv was in Jay-Z's career. Jay would've never been at Def Jam if it wasn't for Irv. Give that man his shot. JD and LA spell the end of DJ. How many labels have those two messed up between them?

As far as "finding talent" is concerned, JD is definitely more skilled. None of the talent Jay Z brought to Def Jam went platinum...and only Fabolous went gold. This is not suprising at all... I love Jay but def jam hasn't been doing so well since he took over. I hate to say that because I have such love for him but it's the truth. Not to mention he started putting more focus on R&B acts as opposed to hip hop artists which is what Def Jam is supposed to be all about. Artists like Rhianna and Neyo were at the forefront, while artists like LL and NAS even were put on the back burner, even more so to where LL left the label... LL left the label the man the label was ultimatly started for...I couldn't believe that when I saw his driven episode. Still though I wish Jay Z the best and all the other artists on the label...WOW i'm going to hate to see where this leaves the artists Jay was putting all his time into....
