I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an shameful condition.
In a sense we've come to our nation's Capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."
But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.
Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?"
We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.
We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.
We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.
We can never be satisfied as long as our chlidren are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "for whites only."
We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.
No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. But not only that; let freedom ring from the Stone Mountain of Georgia. Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

MTO is taking Hillary’s statement out of context I may vote for her because I agree with her stance on affirmative action and what she will do to preserve Dr. Kings dream while she is president.
Pls read the links above. I donated to Obama's campaign before these news stories broke that he is not a proponent of race based affirmative action and now I am not so sure that I can still support him. Because due to racism that still exists in this country affirmative action is still needed to help blacks gain employment and equal access to education. We can not allow our affirmative action programs to include poor whites as Obama appears to be considering. Our forefathers fought and died during the civil rights movement for equal access to jobs, that affirmative action is supposed to help enforce and we can not loose these gains, due to the lack of support of our "own" (Obama) politicians. I am not sure why Obama does not appear to have the same concern as many African Americans do regarding the need to safe guard the few gains that we have received due to affirmative action. Can it be that he is out of touch with the Afro- American community because of his upbringing (raised by white family) or privileged life or not being a descendent of slaves? Because of this reason and others I may vote for Clinton, although she is white she agrees with maintaining race based affirmative action, from what I have read.
Black Dr.s and Lawyers couldn’t even get a decent job before the civil rights movement and affirmative action. Many black Dr.s , lawyers and professionals were porters on trains, due to racism. Many of our people could not feed their families. This racism still exists; many Afro- Americans would not be hired today, even though they are the best candidate for the job if it were not for corporation’s affirmative action initiatives. Whites tend to hire whites even unqualified whites.

Without a vision the people perish. I have not heard the interview but even if the wording is verbatim, she should have stated it another way. If Dr. King had not polarized the Black population of America and helped us realize that we truly have a voice then President Johnson would not have had a reason to pass any legislation to try to bring about change. I believe that change was inevitable. If you have never had the opportunity, I encourage you to make a trip to Memphis to visit the Civil Rights Museum. It will really motivate and inspire you to raise your social consciencness. To look at the hotel room where Dr. King last stayed, the balcony where he was shot and the window where he was shot from as well as other remnents and artifacts of the Civil Rights movement. It is truly amazing. |

What Lyndon Baines Johnson did was courageous--Politically. He knew that by signing the legislation he signed that he was handing the south to the republicans on a silver platter. It takes political courage to do that. But thats his job, to protect all Americans even if its not politically popular. Thats why we celebrate Martin Luther Kings birthday instead of Lyndon Johnson's. The works of Martin Luther King and others made the president act.
Like I said, I SAW and HEARD what she said, she said it in a way to connect Martin Luther King dreaming with Barack Obama hoping and that someone who is great at hoping and dreaming is short on action.

The Civil rights movement is no different in actions from the freeing of the slaves. You may have a president that passes a bill, but please believe me that it was never initiated by that presedents moral actions, but because of a movement. Lydon Johnson may be same time of president as Abraham Lincoln. Do you think that Lincoln would ever have pushed to free the slaves if he did not see the vision, this in no way credits him as anti slavery, but simply as a man with foresite set on delivering on the demands of the nation. To credit Lyndon and discredit Martin Luther King Jr, is the same as saying that researcher is less influential than the presenter. Hiliary falls into the same complex that white America has been trapped in, which being able to see beyond their own ego. If MLK jr. had never established this united front and garnered the respect of the nation, there would never be a movement for Lyndon to sign off on; cause God knows he would never have the balls or even for that matter the sense of urgency to create such a movement. MLK Jr. has done what 95% of our population will not do, stand up to a bully, with a non-violent approach.

That's a common act that happens in society. There is nothing morally wrong with it. It's referred to voting for someone who understands your plights, struggles and dreams. Why exactly is Obama stating that he has hopes of change? Because he feels that if he were in power he can bring about that change...why must we always look to others to bring about change for us?
Does anyone know the qualities of a good and effective leader? A leader must be charismatic, a good communicator, a person with a vision, a person that can motivate others through positive vs. negative tactics, a person that can delegate,
a person that assists others in becoming more then they thought was even possible. A good leader soes not dictate but inspires. A person that can motivate his/her followers to act. I really think Barack Obama has those qualities and that in itself is a change from most of the presidents of the past...
Another question...what is the point of having those qualities if you don't even try to use them? Some people say Obama is not ready, we are not ready for a black president...well i'm ready for a president with qualities like Obama...no matter what his skin color is...it just so happens he is black which to me is a PLUS...and from what I hear he does have hopes and he does have dreams and instead of him waiting for another president to realize those hopes and dreams he believes he has the ability to bring it...i believe it too

Of course, MLK needed Congress to pass the law. He is not the law-making body in the nation. Duh. However, Congress only passes the law if there is public pressure to do so. To undermine, the people who lost their lives in the struggle and deify the politician who cowered to political pressure is a sham. I think it is important to understand that if you demand change, it will come. It did not come because the Johnson et. al were so generous; blacks demanded it. Furthermore, many would say but for the Cold War, there would be no civil rights act of 1964. Congress passed the law partially due to the international outrage over the poor treatment of blacks, as the U.S. condemned the lack of freedom in communism. MLK was fully aware of this, and some of his writing touch upon this.
Clinton demeans the struggle of those like MLK to put the politician on the pedestal. It was unnecessary. All the people on here saying that the statement is out of conetxt should do their own research. More importantly, the law was pretty pointless without the litigation that BLACK civil rights attorneys engaged. Litigation has been substantially more significant in our everyday lives than that law. Research MLK and teh civil rigths movement, and listen to Clinton's statements. For once, MTO is right on the money. |

@crysmarie, I hope everyone reads THIS! Hillary is only saying that if you have a DREAM, she'll listen...SHE can make that DREAM happen, if it's dealing with the LAW or POLITICAL issues. A DREAM is onething, but you HAVE to have people with the POWER to make it happen.
