: Congratulations are in order. MediaTakeOut.com has learned that over the weekend tennis superstar Venus Williams and her boyfriend of nearly a year, Hank Kuehne, got engaged.
Details of how it happened are still sketchy, but MediaTakeOut.com managed to confirm the engagement with one of Venus' family members. According to Venus' kin, the two lovebirds are trying to keep they're engagement quiet. The insider explained, "Venus is preparing for [the Australian Open] and she doesn't need the [media] distraction. But everyone is very happy - especially Venus."
We have to say, we're really happy for her too.

I had a Huge crush on Venus Williams growing up. She's a beautiful, statuesque, classy woman. It's always sad when I hear people dogging her, especially people of her own race. She's done a great job representing herself and her race in a predominantly white sport and at the very least she deserves respect. I'm not saying everyone should find her attractive, I'm just saying respect her because she's a respectable person.
For those of you who don't follow tennis, the Williams' have endured A LOT in the way of bad press, hateful fans, booing at their matches. It hasn't been easy for them but they continue to persevere and that to me is both heroic and admirable. I hope Venus is happy and I wish her and her sister all the best on and off the tennis court.

While the number of blacks in interracial relationships is small, black men make up the overwhelming majority of those couples. Now I know that not every black man has dated interracially, but it's a little ironic for black men to object to black women doing something that statistically, as a demo, they do far more often than black females.

They can date a black man unlike themselves (with less money or education). They can date interracially or be alone. The irony of this, is that black men don't have such a problem, yet black males are in more interracial couples than black females.

This is strategically done so that black men don't become "to attractive" in any woman's eyes. Especially white women!

I don't know, I always thought that if someone found love, and as long as they were happy, who cares what color the other person is. I've read some of these comments on here, and they are just so negative. Why? Black comes in all shades, and just because she doesn't look like a model, that doesn't mean she's ugly. One person on here joked about her being a man...ha ha, very funny. This woman is educated, strong and athletic and rich, and it's these types of women that intimidate some black men...why insult the woman just because she's not pretty to you...obviously she's pretty to someone, chick is engaged.
I don't know what psychological reasons there may or may not be for her marrying this man or whether or not he's a bumb. I'll leave that up to the 2 people involved. I will; however, say that I am truly saddened by the number of attacks constantly made on this woman and her sister's looks. I realize that hatin' on people is form of enternainment on this site, but these are 2 women who have endured a great deal of controversy and ridicule to accomplish something that only a few people have done in life. You rarely hear of these 2 ladies getting involved in anything negative. Other than thier feats on the tennis court, most of their media attention is because of something postive they've done in thier communities. So, I think it's a little unfair to attack them so harsly. I'm not saying you need to find them attractive; but just something to think about....
hmm, interesting theory STAYPOPPIN, but I think it has more to do with media exposure. Black men are far more visible in the media doing "manly" things like playing sports and what not, but black women aren't as visible when it comes to media interpretations of femininity. Looking at fashion magazines, tv and film roles, men's magazines and like, black women stuggle for visibility in these areas, whereas non-black, particularly white women, are everywhere and black men are not immune to their (non-black women) exposure. Even "black" media goes out of its way to promote a European beauty ideal. Look at the girls in the music videos. Look at the black couples that receive the most media exposure. The ones that get the most coverage involve black men with light skinned and/or non-black women. I still stand by my assertion, though. when it comes to IR's these days black men are setting the tone. If there were more balance, it wouldn't be an issue, but I actually support the idea of more black women in IR's and the media covering these couples.

The lighter you are the more "white buyers" will watch the commercials that run during a TV show. Or the more light you are the more they can market you to "white buyers" as far as selling records because these women look closer to them!
The media will never show white men/black women relationships because white men are bound by honor to uphold the white race, and black women don't fit into the equasion!

how do you know that's true, about light skinned black women selling more product? Why are you so certain of that? Are the girls selling the music or are the artists selling the music? Do album sales depend upon how fair or mixed race looking a video girl is? For all of 50 Cent's mysoginy, he features black women of many shades as "it" girls in his videos. My younger cousin just got a Chris Brown retrospective DVD, and I had never really watched his videos before, but I noticed a colorist theme in what the women looked like. Most of the "featured" girls were light, mixed race looking, or hispanic/non-black. If you look at the world of high fashion, the top, black models are very ethnic/African looking. There's a biracial one right now, half black and Korean, but she's not quite as known or as famous as Naomi, Alek Wek, Liya Kibede, Tyra, Oluchi etc. These women manage to sell products to white people all the time. Selita Ebanks (Tyra's replacement as the "black Victoria's secret model) isn't selling as many undies to white women as Tyra did, and she's lighter than Tyra.
There are always acceptions, but you are talking about the video girls, and I'm talking about the artist. They're usually light brown to light!
Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Keisha cole, Mary J, etc. Don't get me wrong it's plenty of foxy darkskin girls, I've gone out with some actually.
In the world of sales, nine times out of ten they are catering to whites, because they have more money, and believe me they pick these girls according to how close they are to white, and how whites will receive them.

I came across a White gentlemen and we got into a conversation about pretty women versus other (Ok looking person). He clearly stated he would never date a women for their looks, why? he does not want to be concerned about whether or not she will cheat because all she'll be about is her looks and herself. Now for Black men, I don't understand the self hatred for your own kind and its scary. But we’re not talking about individual female artists. We’re talking about video girls, who are more or less shills or props anyway. So what evidence can you provide that light skinned/mixed-race/non-black video girls contribute to the bottom line of album sales? You can’t really. You can only speculate. 50 featured a brown skinned girl in his Wanksta video and Get Rich or Die Trying was his best selling disc ever, but you would never credit the girl with the album’s success. So if album sales of hip-hop artists are not dependent upon how light the props/girls are, then what’s driving the trend? Maybe it’s casting directors, not consumers. What white person is buying a rap cd because of the girls in the video? I don’t think this is a trend that white consumers are fueling.

I'm not a basher of black men. I happen to care deeply for black men. However, black men overwhelming are putting the black community at risk by irresponsible, damaging behavior leaving the responsibility of the survival of Black America squarely on the shoulders of Black women. Black women are frustrated and hurt. We are not mules.We see ever other race of men proactively creating a future for their communities and our men faltering, not accepting responsibility and in the process turning their backs on us. Why should Black women tolerate this?? To say that the dysfuntion is SHARED by both Black men AND Black women is laughable. Any expert, historian, pundit, intellectual, etc would agree that the Black man is not pulling their weight. Statistics are what they are. In fact, if it weren't for the strides made by Black women, our community would be in a more abysmal state than it is already. Your response doesn't suprise me...what other group of men looks to blame their women for their communities downfall and shortcomings? Really, when has that ever happened in history? Black men have a unique habit of displaying little responsibility yet pointing the finger at everyone but themselves.
1) What other group of men finds sport in degrading their women and then tries to justify it as artistic expression?
2) What other group of men abandons their children in such staggering numbers?
3) What other group of men glorifies criminal behavior as being cool and belittles academic behavior as being nerdy?
4) What other group of men has dispropotianately put women at risk of AIDS due to irresponsible Down Low behavior?
5) What other group of men idolizes the Eurocentric ideal of beauty, regards their women as beautiful if they are close to that ideal and marginalizes them if they are not, and eventually seeks that Euro ideal while leapfrogging over their own educated, beautiful, caring women in such record numbers?
Black women have been loyal to Black men for so long (and most still are). That loyalty is not given to us. I would say this recent movement of Black women looking outside the race in large numbers is a recent phenomenon. Largely, it's not out of desire, it's out of necessity, accessibility and to some degree rejection by Black men. Ask a sista in Minneaplois---Black women are pretty much invisible to Black men. This scenario is repeated in many other parts of the country. Why should black women be alone and loyal to a Black man who has decided that Black women are out of style?

Let me run through your list:
1) Who by and large are the forces behind the porn industry? White men...Do a little googling and you will see plenty of blond haired, blue eyed "eurocentric" looking women involved in some of the most vile activities possible. Additionally, Britney Spears as a teenage girl in a school girl outfit was not the creation of black men.....Paris Hilton with no panties was not the creation of black men....Hugh Heffner and the people behind Maxim, Stuff and FHM are not black...So please, sexism is NOT the creation or province of Black men...White men established the sexist dichotomy, and they profit plenty off of objectification of their women.
2)You are taking a class issue and making it a race issue. You see more child abandonment by fathers in poor, underprivileged communities across racial lines. Hell, I grew up in rural Appalachia....The majority of the white kids I grew up with didnt know who their fathers were, or werent involved with them. ...So let not buy into the White male "Father Knows Best" image. Its bunk....Middle class men and Upper class men..Even working class men are statistically more involved with their kids...Men in the poorest parts of society arent, and that is true across racial lines...
3) Once again, class more than race....Go into poor communities in rural white america and check the test scores and graduation rates....Go look at the test scores of the children of the Black middle class....
4)The myth of the "DL Brotha" and the skewered statistics were pushed out as just another way to villify Black men. This is a whole different, more detailed conversation....Lets just say that since JL King or whatever that fairy's name was came out, there have been some sound medical research authorities that have poked holes in this phenomenon and showed how the "numbers" are easily manipulated and inaccurate. I am more than willing to share the research and sources on this one.
5) All I can say to this one is, what brothas are you dealing with? This is a HUGE generalization....I dont think its fair to take the handful of brothas in Minneapolis and Seattle and showcase them as the norm when you have Black men in Black Enterprises Top 10 cities for black professionals overwhelmingly marrying Black women. Botton line is that Black men still overwhelmingly marry Black women (94% around the time of the last census I believe) so we arent doing THAT much idolizing...
If Black women can't find a man, then I think she needs to look in the mirror and look at the men she's approaching and the men she's passing by....Take some personal accountability rather than bashing a whole gender as a whole, and the same goes for Black men. If people date interracially, that's cool, but that is a CHOICE that is made. And its a choice that should not be justified by bashing your own race.
There are so many gross generalizations about different groups going on. You will find the good, the bad, and the ugly in EVERY group-black men, white men, black women, white women.
The reality is in alot of places(like where I"m from), people from different races date with little to no stigma attached. I realize some posters here are from very different places where there's alot more stigma attached. But that doesn't mean Venus is coming from the place you are coming from. So, you it's hard to judge her motivations for her dating a white man--just as it is to judge the motivations for her white fiancee dating her.
There is no need to take it personally when someone dates outside their race. Our race in America has always been mixed, as has the white race in America. And it only will get more mixed with time as interracial dating becomes the norm more and moret-the train's left the station people!

It's amazing to me how you can rationalize every shortcoming by saying it's the white man who has perpetuated or created it. That image is promoted all over the world. All of the empirical evidence shows that this is clearly damaging to our community. The plain fact is that we are not on the same playing field as White America, so pathologies and dysfunction have a more debilitating effect on us. When you say other men abandon their children--it's no where near the extent that occurs in Black America. More than 70% of black children are raised without fathers. No other community has numbers even approaching that. It's reached epidemic proportions. Many Black fathers are not paying child support.This has long reaching effects on the future of Black America. If no other problem were eradicated in our community besides repairing the Black family structure--that alone would be huge. That alone would rectify so much in our crumbling communities. We cannot continue saying "White folks do it too" to justify pathologies in our community. We have to do better.
By the way, you're not fooling anybody by saying Black men don't overwhelming prefer lighter skinned black women.We've already established this and there are countless accounts and evidence to substantiate this. Besides the requisite music videos, there are films, books,songs, tv shows in addition to data and random polling of your average black man. On the other hand, black women are quite vocal of their appreciation of black men with many expressing a strong preference for darker skinned brothas. You can't convince me, yourself or anyone else otherwise. There is the occasional successful brotha that has a dark skinned sista on his arm but that clearly is the exception. While we're at it, you may as well fess up that there are countless black men with a strong preference for white, Asian, Hispanic women to the exclusion of black women. Or the brotha that will say "I don't see color, I'm colorblind, I date the rainbow...etc" (yet, it's anyone but a black women) This desire runs deep in black men. The classic book "Soul On Ice" by Eldridge Cleaver (a Black Panther no less) illustrated this. He was quite poetic in his lust for any woman that wasn't black and his disdain and contempt for black women. Many of his friends, colleagues, etc expressed the same views. There's a new book titled "Why Black Men Love White Women" (you can find it online) that breaks this down quite well. Once again, the flip side of this is that black women are NOW looking beyond black men generally not out of preference,or not seeing beauty in blackness (like black men do)---but out of necessity and realizing that hey, maybe we're entitled to being treated well and cherished like other women. If we're not getting from black men then we have a right to look elsewhere like everyone else. If black men displayed the loyalty we show them, black women would rarely even consider it. If black women didn't feel maligned and marginalized then they would rarely give it a second thought.
A little background on myself, I graduated from one of the finest universities in the country, was born and bred in NYC, have traveled all over the world, I've modeled since my pre-teen years and am a successful businesswoman. I've overwhelming dated and preferred black men throughout my life. However, men of other races have always pursued me and I've dated them on occasion. I've never been at a loss for a man and I'm currently in a stable, healthy relationship. During the course of my studies, travels and experiences I've witnessed the way men of all races treat women and have usually not been pleased with where black men generally rank on that scale. Don't get me wrong, being in NYC I move in circles of upwardly mobile black folks. I know some black couples that are doing well. But, it's not the majority. Black men tend to be extremely phobic about marriage especially to a black woman. More and more, upwardly mobile, progressive black men are not choosing a black woman as the woman they want on their arm. On the other hand, among my friends of other races it is far more commonplace to get married and settle down and the baby mama/baby daddy phenomenon is non-existent.
My point is, more and more black women feel like it's time we get the treatment we deserve, to think of our own preservation instead of sacrificing happiness and feeling beholden to our families, churches,community, etc while the honorable, respectful, black men is nowhere to be found.

There are behaviors that need to be addressed in the black community and black women are not blameless in those behaviors! Every generalization you have thrown at Black men, those same characteristics apply to many, many black women..and many men and women of other races and backgrounds. Good black men are out there...Educated black men are out there...And the statistics show that the majority of them are married to Black women.
