: LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Aretha Franklin is unhappy, she does not mince words. On Tuesday, the longtime Queen of Soul slammed Beyonce Knowles' intro to Tina Turner at Sunday's Grammy Awards, in which Knowles called Turner, not Franklin, "the queen."
"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."
E-mails to Knowles' publicist Yvette Noel-Schure and calls and e-mails to Recording Academy spokeswomen Jaime Sarachit and Barb Deghan were not immediately returned.
In the first few seconds of Knowles' intro to Turner's performance, she name-dropped Franklin and a long list of famed female singers. Then the "Crazy in Love" chanteuse focused on Turner.
"There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," said Knowles, strutting in hot pants. "Ladies and gentlemen. Stand on your feet and give it up for the queen."
At a party later that night, Knowles called Turner her "ultimate icon."
Still, Franklin ended her brief criticism on a gracious note, thanking the Grammys and the voting academy and saying, "love to Beyonce anyway."
Known for such hits as "Respect" and "Chain of Fools," Franklin tied with the Clark Sisters for best gospel performance trophy for her duet "Never Gonna Break My Faith" with Mary J. Blige.

That was wrong of them, to announce tina turner as the queen, when everyone knows thats aretha's title. It's disrectful to do that, whether they knew it or not. Aretha without a doubt is The Queen of Soul for her talent and longevity but Bey was referring to the embodiment of all the attributes that she felt made Tina The Queen. And for the record, Aretha is without a doubt a legendary powerhouse vocalist but her style was super jacked up back then and it's even worse now. She just needs to stop hatin' on others who have taken it to the next level.

I am not a big Beyonce fan but I am on Beyonce's side on this one. It was not her fault Aretha Franklin's fat sensitive a$$ is mad! Beyonce has been imitating Tina for years with the short dresses and big blonde hair. So it's no surprise that she called her the queen. Tina is the queen to her. Tina is the queen to me as well! I respect Aretha and all for what she has contributed to music but I am not a fan of Aretha but I love some Tina.

I was thinking the same thing about the intro that Beyonce gave, she should've really thought it out better. I can understand her trying to give Tina her props, but you can't dismiss all those women like that. You can't praise them in one momment and then give them a back handed compliment the next.

Ive always considered Aretha the Queen, always. I've always considered Tina rock and roll. Too me these ladies have 2 different type of music. tina has always been high energy, always. Aretha has always been a deep soulful singer to me. I do find the younger generation needs to be more respectful of the icons of yesterday. They are a part of music history as well regardless. Actually they can learn a thing or two is how I see it. Aretha has always been outspoken about how she feels. I find her honest actually. I also did read on her recent interview on the Morning show on CBS that she is now on Nutrisystem and taking steps to lose the weight. I commend her on those effects. I will always consider Aretha the Queen of soul. Thats been her title for a long time

I do think Ms Franklin overreacted. I don't think Beyonce's intentions were to take "cheap shot at contraversy". If Aretha would like to show the real Queen she is, she would've not said this publicly and dealt with it and kept it movin'. I put myself in her position and I would've felt offended too, but I would've given it a little more thought and came to the same conclusion she did, but less it posted all over the internet!!! As others have mentioned, Aretha has always been known as the "Queen of Soul"...not "the Queen." Had Beyonce introduced Tina as the "Queen of Soul," that would have been one thing...However, she introduced Tina as "The Queen." -As also has been mentioned,Tina doesn't sing the type of music Aretha sings..she crossed over into pop/rock a long time ago...there's no confusion or comparision. Their musical styles are like apples and oranges. The only thing they have in common is their blackness.
Finally, old school history buffs will recall that Dinah Washington was known as the "Queen of the Blues", which was often shortened to "The Queen"... and a book was written about her entitled "Queen." -- There are a whole lot of grandparents/great grandparents who are probably upset with Aretha for claiming the label associated with Dinah for so long. It's been written that Dinah Washington also took her "Queen" label seriously. She's probablly rolling over in her grave!
This whole thing seems weird. It might be that, deep down inside, Ree is a bit upset that Tina hasn't gained much weight and can still get up and move. Yes, she's slowed down a bit, but she still put on a performance that she didn't have to be ashamed of. -- With a good nutritionist and a personal trainer, which she can certainly afford, Ree can get back out there and make a good showing too.
