: DeKALB - (AP) At least two people have been shot at Northern Illinois University, according to information heard Thursday afternoon over a police scanner.
Shortly after 3 p.m., calls started coming over a police scanner about a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.
Reports have said the shooter is down.
A university spokeswoman said at 3:10 p.m. she had just heard about the shooting and could not immediately comment on the situation.
At 3:20 p.m., the university posted a campus alert on its Web site.
“There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus,” the alert read. “Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity.”
A Daily Chronicle photographer on the scene reported five wounded people going by on stretchers.
At least two people are reported down in DuSable Hall, and one person had blood on the back of the head, according to eyewitness reports. It could not be confirmed if it was from a gunshot.
Police have established a perimeter around Cole Hall, and 15 to 20 emergency vehicles were in the area.
People near the scene were seen praying, talking on cell phones, and crying

It's the system fault, when you allow government and state officials to tell you how to raise your children, it takes away from the parent. Now at days, children could call family services on parents. When I have kids I'll make sure I don't have them here in America, and if they try to threaten me with family services, I'll take their ass back to a third world country and teach them a lesson. I'll let the whole family get on the child's ass for trying to get smart.
This could had been prevented...They had gotten threats about a month ago, Even if they weren't related to what happened today, They should've heightened security at all colleges and high schools after the Virginia Tech incident or even the Columbine incident, How many people lives is it gonna take for these dumb a$$es to arm ALL high schools & colleges with metal detectors and more security?? They need to have drills to teach students what to do during a shootout in a classroom and show them safe ways to evacuate -------------------------------------------------- And why do gunmen always have to take the cowards way out??
I live about 30 min from NIU (in a suburb in the Chicagoland area), and was gonna finish my last yr in college there next semester. Its a sad thing that theres so many crazy people in the world. My friend's sister was actually in the class rm where the shooting occured but thankfully she was sitting in the front, and the shooter was all the way in the back. Unfortunatly the children who got wounded werent so lucky, but thankfully no was fatally injured that we know of. My prayers go out to everyone. Lets hope that this doesnt repeat itself at another school.
People need to be more careful about others need and state of mind to prevent those kind og tragedy, as far as whupping (nearly kill) a child, i've know people that had been beat up when they were younger and that grow up to beat their partners or kill people . Man, I graduated college in 2004. Tensions were high at my school because of the war and an investigation that involved to Arabic instructors accused of having ties to terrisom but thank God, nothing crazy happened. Everytime I hear about a school shooting, I think back to that time.
But when you take prayer out of school, what do you expect? It can't be good. They have turned their back on God.
I'm definitely gonna be praying more for my middle school students. This is too much. It's crazy that this has become a norm. I was a junior in high school when Columbine happened, and it's only increased.
Indeed, if any black child in America -- especially in the mostly white suburbs of Littleton, or Santee -- were to openly discuss their plans to murder fellow students, as happened both at Columbine and now Santana High, you can bet your ass that somebody would have turned them in, and the cops would have beat a path to their doorstep. But when whites discuss their murderous intentions, our stereotypes of what danger looks like cause us to ignore it -- they're just "talking" and won't really do anything. How many kids have to die before we rethink that nonsense? How many dazed and confused parents, Mayors and Sheriffs do we have to listen to, describing how "normal" and safe their community is, and how they just can't understand what went wrong?
I'm an NIU ulumni. I'm praying that no one I know was hurt. Now they're saying 5 people, including the gunman, were killed!
This is insane. People, maturity comes when you are able to control your emotions. Everybody won't agree with you all the time and everyone may not like you. You may not understand someone, but shooting people up and acting a fool is NOT a solution to anything!

It's time to set aside the race issue with the violence in our world. As we see from the DC Sniper incident(s). This world as a whole is crazy and it's gonna get worse. For those saying black and white? It's so much deeper than that. We're living in the days where it's mothers against daughters, fathers against sons. Your own neighbor could very well open fire on you for no apparent reason, or something just as bad. This is not a black/white thing, it's a crazy world thing, and it includes ALL races, and we are ALL capable of being the prey OR the predator. Wake up people....
There are 7 dead including the shooter. When something as tragic as this happens, no one can ever truly prepare for it. As vigilant as some of us think we are...one can never predict when something like this will jump off.
Something is seriously wrong with this world. It seems as if our youth are being attacked both mentally and physically. The pressure to be "successful" seems to be overwhelming. The competition is unbelievable. College is no longer the place where our youth go to get an education and begin the learning process of being on their own...now it has boiled down to trying to find the college where our children are least likely to get shot.
My heart goes out to all the families whose lives have been forever changed and I hope that something this tragic never happens again but unfortunately....statistics prove otherwise.
I am a freshman at NIU n this is so sad, but no one i knew so far didnt get hurt or was killed. I was outside way across the street from the building this occurred at the time da shooting happened but i was on my way to da dorm n the school has a bad way of letting people know about this because they only posted this on the website like everyone is gonna check the website at that time n i didnt know about this until 30 minutes later. I wasnt playing no games, i left dat school an hour later.

PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! this is not an issue with race, so what if the shooter was white? GUESS WHAT??? majority of shooting violence happens in majority black neighborhoods and towards black people. And according to reports... the shooter was a well-loved honor roll student with many awards and had just completed college in 2007. We never know who these people may be and what their motives are, so lets stop being prejudice {people who seem to think he was raised wrong}.

Our numbers come mostly from crime such as dope selling dope or hustling on the streets because of discrimination on getting equal employment opportunities. I don't condone violence but I can see a reason for it!

I just don't agree with us looking at this as a "white" thing with this school shooting. Our communities are FAR more dangerous than some random act of violence. Like I said, where is it MOST likely to happen. Our hoods are more dangerous than anywhere else, but because the news cameras don't toss the story on CNN, black people wanna let out a sigh of relief like it's some kind of reward because we don't commit crime in the same way? Our crime rate is higher, much higher, than the "random act of violence" rate.
