: MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Janet's new album Discipline is shaping up to do a lot better than many people imagined. According to the website Hitsdailydouble.com, Janet is on-pace to sell approximately 180K units. To put that number in contest, that's better than Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad - which sold 162,000 in its first week.
Here's how they're reporting it:
Look for Michael Jackson’s little sister Janet to enter next week’s chart at #1, with her new IDJ album Discipline headed for 180k in sales, give or take, based on one-day sales reports from our retail minions.BTW - to the 1,000 or so Janet fans who sent us hate mail for our little jokey-joke about Miss Jackson yesterday - are you happy now. SHEESH ... and we thought Mary J Blige had the most active fan base....
How to you gauge sales for the WEEK based upon two DAYS of sales anyway?
I know people personally who have plans to buy the cd this weekend because they're too busy to stop by Best Buy during the work week..
We'll see. I hope she does even better than those numbers. I"m not one to write a susta off simply because she's getting older every year... God willing, on December 9th... so will I. (and you)
oh boy m.t.o!!!...ya'll stressing this a bit too hard & being hypocrites while @ it...the nerve!...this woman, wether we approve of her latest music or not is one accomplished artist, icon so if this turns out bad or a total success...does it matter??????...she's still doing her regardless & most likely this won't be the last we'll hear of her anytime soon
ImperfectBeauty, that name suits you especially based on that comment alone. This CD should do well it's a great CD. Go get your copy. As for the last 2 CDs, they were good as well, I think they would have done better had they not leaked as did this one. It seems that someone is intentionally trying to sabotage her sales as they do with many of the artists. The CD leaked just days before it was released. Had that not happened, sales would be even higher than the 180K being projected by MTO. Did I mention that the CD is great?
She Was Supposed to Sell Over 230k Copies! Janet is a Wrap!! Singers Don't Know How to "Transition!" You're 40+, You've Been Married 2 or 3 Times, and You've Had to Weather the Storm of One Of the Worst Public Scandals In American Entertainment History (It Wasn't Her Fault!) Stop Carving Yourself Like a Damn "Jack-O-Lantern," Put On Some Close, and For God's Sake.........Sing Some Age Appropriate Songs! Your Sh*t Is No Longer "Rhythm Nation Sexy!" If All Else Fails.......START SOME SH*T WITH 50 CENT!!!!
well, I just purchased her album this morning. I havent heard it yet, but Janet ain't got nothing to worry about. Janet jackson is an ICON!!! She always will be. She can sing, dance, and act. She got it ALL> And besides, she's a Jackson. She comes from one of the most talented families is showbusiness. What more could you ask for. And I can't wait for brother Mike to make his comeback. I will love and support the Jacksons forever. Adn I'm only a yung'n! How you like dat?
Oh, her album is out now isn't it? But 180K is by no means a sign of a comeback. It's rather disappointing for someone who has been in the game as long as she has. I guess timing your album to come out on a day when nothing else is being released has its advantages. LOL
And it cannot be compared to a Rihanna album, but more like Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi COMEBACK album which sold 404K copies in it's first week. Hmmm I think that's less than half.
She dead in the water like that goldfish you had in third grade and came home and found that muthaphucka floating on top of the water......I don't care WHAT you say....someone else made a comment worth pointing out, though: Janet too old for that style of music. If she had have matured musically, she might still have a career. But, she's FINISHED now and should just go ahead and let Dupri knock that @ss up and go quietly into the night with her millions.....
At least she's still selling. I wouldn't want to work in an industry where my worth is based on how many cds I sold.
Mentally, I bet this has to be hard for some celebs who want to be on top for 40 years. Eventually one's time is going to come where they will no longer be #1 and it's time to do something else, while doing music part-time.
Janet needs to have a reunion with her old producers and see what that brings.
I love Patti LaBelle too but that doesn't mean Patti's going to be #1 every single year now.
Her brother Mike's attempt at a comeback with revisiting Thriller was a failure and this morning I heard he's trying to block the auction of Neverland. MJ needs to give it up and go on and raise his children. He brought all of this on himself.
MTO can go suck on some nuts.. wat ya'll said yesterday was a done deal.. so y apologies now. anyway.. idk if 180k is good or bad.. they compared it to Rihanna's but still is that good or bad.. don't it suppose to be like 300k or watev.. anyway i don't care how the album does in the charts.. this is her best album since all for you (2001).
I don't know why Janet stans are acting as if those numbers are something to be excited about. First off, Janet had absolutely NO competition. Erykah wasn't good enough to defeat her obviously. Plus Badu wasn't even all over television like Janet is now. If Janet had released her album around the likes of Mariah Carey and Madonna, then she wouldn't have even had a chance. I mean if you look at it, around 180 sold is REALLY bad for an artist like Janet. It's also really bad for a comeback album. I don't care if Janet has never went any where. It's still considered a comeback, because her last two albums were duds and Discipline is the album that is supposedly going to bring her back to her former glory. Just like Mariah got with TEOM. But that album was a huge blockbuster and first week sales were phenominal. Janet's stans want to act as if album sales don't matter, because she's an icon, but that's not true. Album sales does matter in Janet's case. She's no legendary veteran. Her brother Mike...yes. Janet...no. But we'll see come next week. HDD numbers are just predictions. They aren't the real deal. Discipline could have sold more or less.
PATTY LABELLE , ARETHA FRANKLIN , NANCY WILSON , TINA TURNER AND SO MANY OTHERS WERE STILL MAKING MUSIC @ THIS AGE , THIS GIRL IS NOT OLD , THE ONES CALLING HER OLD WHAT WILL YOU LOOK LIKE @ HER AGE .
THESE PEOPLE WHO THINK SHE IS OLD ARE UNDER INTERNALIZED OPRESSION (PUT YOUR OWN PEOPLE DOWN PUBLICLY).
Britney's supposed comeback Blackout sold 290k in it's first week. Janet's is expected to sell under 200k. So what does that tell you? And the only reason why Janet got compared to Rihanna saleswise is because Janet is an icon, and it's really sad to see her selling that way. We expect sales like that to come from people like Fergie, and Rihanna. Not Janet.
i don't care what noboday say. She should have retired after "Velvet Rope". Everything after that she looked like she was trying too hard. Trying to be as nasty as possible, trying to outdo the last one. Now she looks old and I'm tired of seeing that same dancing that nobody does anymore. You should quit when you're at the top, not prolong it until you're washed up and embarrassing yourself. Don't go out like that! Or hang up all that dancing and dressing 20 years older than you are and do some more mature [EXPLETIVE]. The whole dominatrix thing sounds like such a lame gimmick for attention. She's an icon, and she shouldn't have to resort to doing cheap stuff like that as a last attempt to save her career. It makes her look desperate. "Anytime, Anyplace" and "If" was sexy as hell. After that, it all went straight to skank.
Janet is fabulous and I have always loved her the way she looks and carries herself etc.I do not think Janet is too old at 40 to do what she is doing but I do think she needs to change her style up a little to appeal more to her age group as well as sing more clearly so I can understand what the he** she be saying LOL-still love her though!
I Love Janet, it doesn't matter how many records she sells. I'm still and will always be a fan of Janet!!! A real fan don't stop likin the artist just because of record sales idiots!!! I like QUALITY over Quantity. Just cause her album aint selling like it used to doesn't mean it's not a good album. Even today's artists are having trouble selling records. So don't count out Janet!!! She is still the ICON : )

First of Janet is a legend The Album is hot and the chicks in the game are only doing half of what Janet,Whitney,Mariah and Madonna did in the 80's when honestly competition was harder and they actually sold more albums, 3.5 million is lowered standered compared to one album selling 10-15 million copies when these chicks these days do that then they doing something when they make 100 million dollars on music alone then they are doing something, Janet will sell more than 180k in her first week her fan base is larger than that .
Firstly, I do not subscribe to the idea that record sales are the truest measure of an artist's overall worth. If that were the case, then the more than 2,000 Cd's that I own would probably have gone a collective LEAD by industry standards...summarily ending the careers of the enormously talented artists who created them.
My collection is chock full of sounds and artists that most have never heard of, many of them having released several albums...none even getting close to going gold, much less platinum. And yet they still have their contracts...and a legion of hardcore enthusiasts as their base.
So again, poor record sales do not reflect the true nature of the artist...except in this case.
Janet Jackson is a pop artist...no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Pop is short for 'popular'. Therefore, if she only manages to sell a paltry 180,000 units in her opening week sales, it shows that her 'popularity' has waned to the point of being almost nonexistent as it compares to her enormously successful history as a leading creator of popular music.
As an individual that had spent the better part of nine years in the music industry tracking album and single sales...I'd like to think that I have a certain degree of expertise as it concerns this situation. Quite simply, Janet fans(myself a major one!) have very real reasons to be concerned.
In industry terminology, 180,000 units would be indicative of a brand new artist just gaining momentum...or, unfortunately, signaling the swan song of a formerly innovative artist.
Given the lukewarm reception by the public to her first single(the numbers don't lie), if those album sales predictions are accurate, I would expect a following week drop off of probably in the neighborhood of 60% or more...which would be catastrophic for an artist such as Janet.
On a personal level, I knew long ago that this project might be in jeopardy. When your first single contains the line, "heavy like a first day period", and sounds like it was left on the cutting room floor of a Britney Spears recording session, there should be cause for concern.
And I'm quite sure that a great many of Janet's fans will consider the Britney reference as a cheap shot...I can assure you it was not. I am more than aware of the fact that she is unquestionably a nightmare with legs...but that nightmare spared no expense when it came to the beats on her album. Which is why, despite the astoundingly bad publicity Britney had generated, music critics(themselves preparing to gleefully sever her empty head!) were left with little choice but to reward her with the best grades of her career...many even proclaiming it a masterpiece.
If anyone could put their prejudice of Britney aside for a moment(a monumental task, I know!), and measure the production against Janet's finished product, I think even the most loyal Janet supporter(if they were really honest) would reluctantly have to admit that the overall production on Britney's album was far more experimental than Janet's. The production, mind you...not the vocals. Neither of them could knock a hole in wet tissue with their voices!
As for Janet's latest, with the exception of maybe three songs(the title track is pure fire!!) out of more than twenty tracks, I found it forgettable with routine by-the-numbers production from a veritable who's-who of mostly no-name producers, Rodney Jerkins being the standout here...and given his track record of late, I use that term loosely.
And even worse news for those who may have wondered why she hasn't committed to doing anything major with any of the super-producers(Neptunes, Timbaland, Dr. Dre)... that decision can be lumped onto the narrow shoulders of Jermaine Dupri. A couple years back, he mindlessly went on a tirade against them, proclaiming himself to be a better producer than ANY of them(WTF???) Timbaland and the Neptunes basically took the high road concerning Jermaine(guess everything would be high around JD!), but the good Dr. and Eminem decided to make a u-turn on that ass...one of the funniest attacks on a ferocious dis track called "Can-I-bitch", which is actually aimed at Canibus but contained some wicked shots at Jermaine! Check it out on youtube. After all that, there was little chance she'd be allowed to let any of them produce her albums. Jermaine probably threatened to shrink if she did!
In conclusion, any talk of Janet needing to "sit her ass down", is being way too premature and harsh, especially when she possesses one of the most awe-inspiring physiques in All of entertainment. I ,for one, on that basis alone, would NEVER want to see her disappear as long as she has that working for her! She has earned the right to make as many albums as she wants...good or bad. I can promise her that I will always listen...but will I care?
She named her album "Discipline", which, as it concerns how she maintains her remarkable body, makes perfect sense. Too bad it doesn't seem to apply to the body of her work instead.
She still can sell more records then that, the week aint over yet MTO and Haters!! These people love to predict stuff, lets just see what really happen! Janet is still and ICON, HATERS!!!! It looks like some of y'all are waiting for her downfall. Janet is still richer then anybody on this website so she ain't worried about nothin. She just doin what she loves, is that a problem!!
It's not a bad album its just Janet has played out - she is getting to old for her style of music.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's what I have been saying! Janet is known for her dancing. 40 years old and still dancing? I mean should't she have at least one baby by now? Or fall back, do something else, something innovative? Who wants to see a 40 year old dance? And dance? Mariah is like her age but Mariah can sing, being able to sing can never get played out. That's real. You Janet fans are crazy and I thought Beyonce's prostitutes were a mess, lol. Don't reply if you don't agree 'cause I know the truth hurts!
Janet puts out quality music, something that Mariah, Keyshia, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige DO NOT do..they put out sh!t that purposely appeals to the wack kids today in the business, and that's NOT MUSIC! That "snap" crackle pop crap is terrible and un-original! Janet and MJ are just about the ONLY artists I'd bother supporting, since they're SAVING the business from complete senseless oblivion, and since the kids who buy music today wouldn't know originality and diversity if it sat next to them at a club. Besides...I think Janet's sales are even gonna be more than that....she's one of the top 5 most successful females in music history, and the best mainstream female out..that's a fact kids
There's NO legendary, talented artist in this day in age (besides maybe Kayne West) who sales a million copies in one week. I mean, even MJ doesn't even move that many units. You know why? Because the people who buy records today don't understand how to support REAL artists! That's a repeatedly proven fact. That's why Whitney, Toni Braxton, Boys II Men, etc. all don't sell many records like they used to, and ALL their last albums were FAR better than the [EXPLETIVE] that Timberlake, Rihanna, Mary, Beyonce, Fergie, Chris Brown, etc. put out....cause these crop of artists are untalented and complete BORES to watch and listen to
