: NEW YORK - (AP) Nearly two years after Star Jones left "The View" on rocky terms, the 46-year-old TV personality has criticized former boss Barbara Walters for writing about her.
In Walters' new memoir, "Audition," she discusses how Jones wouldn't acknowledge her gastric bypass surgery on the air. She also writes about Jones' lavish wedding, which wound up alienating viewers as Jones accepted gifts in return for promotion.
"It is a sad day when an icon like Barbara Walters, in the sunset of her life, is reduced to publicly branding herself as an adulterer, humiliating an innocent family with accounts of her illicit affair and speaking negatively against me all for the sake of selling a book. It speaks to her true character," Jones told Us Weekly magazine.
Jones' publicist, Brad Zeifman, said Jones wouldn't comment further.
Walters reveals in the book that she had a past affair with married U.S. Sen. Edward Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s.
The details about Jones are less juicy, but shed light on what happened behind the scenes on "The View" when Jones refused to publicly acknowledge the gastric bypass surgery she had in 2003.
Walters says Jones, who'd dropped 160 pounds in three years, changed her mind after telling Walters she'd talk about the procedure on the program. Walters says she didn't want to be the "poster child" for the procedure.
"I understood that, but it put us all in a terrible position," Walters writes. "It meant we virtually had to lie for Star, especially when she said again and again on the air that her weight loss was due primarily to portion control and Pilates. ... Joy (Behar), in particular, resented having to go along with the lie that implied that all one needed to do was sit-ups and ingest one cookie instead of two."
Jones confirmed her surgery last year in a first-person essay in Glamour magazine. She said she "was scared of what people might think," and "ashamed at not being able to get (herself) under control without this procedure."
In March, Jones quietly filed for divorce from banker Al Reynolds. The couple married in November 2004.

i think that this society relies on tv for knowledge instead of books. anyone with a brain could see that she'd had surgery. their drop in ratings is a reflection of all of the dummies looking up to her for comfirmation of the surgery. her surgery is no different than stars never admitting their plastic surgeries. barb didn't write about her nose job and face lift back in the day.

The problem is the fact that she came into our homes everyday and told us her most intimate details about her engagement and upcoming wedding plans. There was a sort of bond that was insinuated between her and the viewers. The fact that you can brandish the good things that are going on in your life and neglect to tell us about the not so positive things is just fake. To top it off you lied about how you lost weight. Countless times she attributed it to pilates which is an outright lie. Numerous times I have heard this whale talk about how she would lie in bed having her pancakes and champaign served to her. If she had been more humble about her courtship and wedding and not been greedy, then this would not be a problem. She MADE a hefty paycheck on the View and could more than afford the wedding. All of those women are fake!! Why do you think they are television PERSONALITIES?!! They obviously are attention whores too - you sit on a talk show all day talking about themselves and what they feel (no script, no plot, no distraction from anything else themselves). Maybe Star has some trouble coming across more authentic and humble than the others, and her insecurities caused an over-inflated need to elevate herself in the eyes of others, but if we're going with the theory that Star Jones is the only one with issues or a vendetta - I'm not buying that one!
The nerve of Star to attack Barbara's book. When Larry King asked Star last year why she lied about her gastric bypass, she said "because I didn't want people to think bad of me." Now does that sound like Walters was trashing her?
Star just happened to be a chapter in Walter's life and wrote about it. It's a memoir and bios tell just about everything.
What other person writes their bio and sends a letter to the person they're going to write about? Not many. Barbara sent a letter to the former Senator to let him know she was going to put their affair in her book. To me, it sounds as if Barbara was in love with the man and that's why she wrote about him. As for the Senator being married, he and his Italian wife had been separated for years but back in those days people just didn't casually divorce. It was frowned upon so they lived separate lives while remaining legally married. Even though Barbara wrote about the senator as a secret, it appears many people already knew about them being an item. Pictures were taken and articles written. It just hadn't leaked out to her bosses yet.
I was upset with ABC, Barbara Walters and Bill Geddes for what appeared to have been done to Star. However, since Barbara finally spoke out about what really happened, I have no sympathy for Star. She agreed upon the reason for exiting and went against it. Toward the end you could tell none of her co-horts on The View wanted her there anymore either. She became rude and loud.
How can someone put their co-workers in a position to lie? Keep your mouth shut instead of saying pilates and calorie control melted the weight off so quickly. Star was a blimp and the audience started seeing her as a greedy, bridezilla, lying host and wanted her off the show, which ABC finally did.
Star will forever blame others. She's the one who wanted a fairytale to a man whose friends and former neighbors came out of the woodwork saying he was gay. She couldn't afford the fairytale so she wanted it for free by plugging every Tom, D*ck and Harry on The View. She's the one who took away Joy Behar's camera at the wedding. She's the one who chose gastric bypass and lied about working out and cutting back on calories as the weight dropped off of her so fast that the audience knew something was up. She's the one who developed a reputation for not being easy to work with. Payless didn't renew her contract either.
Star is having a very hard time getting a regular TV gig too. Wonder why? After her response to Barbara's behind the scenes revelations, I'd say Star has a long way to go before calling herself humble. Al Roker was successful with approach. He said he got it done and didn't want to discuss it for fear of becoming the poster boy for that dangerous surgery. Enough said. Years later he went on to discuss it.
Also, I don't think people listened to what was really going on on The View. She said Joy Behar became incensed at having to go along and pretend everyday that Star lost the way thru diet and exercise. I wouldn't even want to discuss it on the show if I had to be part of the lie.
I use to catch The View occasionally and by the time Star decided she was going to have that Disney World wedding, I had had enough. It was as if she took over the show! She was going to be Mrs. Al Reynolds and cared less about anyone else's feelings.

Just a small correction. Meredith(the shows moderator) left the show. Star quit or was fired. Rosie was hired as the moderator. That was Meredith's job. No one was hired to replace Star right away. Then Sherrie was hired to replace Star. Whoopie replaced Rosie after she left or was fired. I would comment further but all of us are entitled to our opinions good bad or ugly. I just wanted to correct the order of hiring,firing and or quitting whatever it was they were doing in this transition.
