I see we have a bunch of Weezy fans on here. Lil Wayne is probably the most popular rapper right now. That in No Way should be enough to crown him the new King of Hip Hop. He hasn't done enough people. How many classic albums does he have. What has he said that's been so thought provoking. What has he done to push Hip Hop forward(not rap music but hip hop) What kind of example does he set for the kids. (Is drinking purp cool?) Popular does NOT equate best. Record sales does not equate the best. All that means is you may have had the best marketing strategy. A Label with a big budget. I still will like to congratulate him on the success of his new album, but I think a lot of people get it twisted. He is still a work in progress.
Well I think there is a very big difference in giving your opinion and just being a straight up hater. Someone who gives their opinion says "I am not a fan of his music. Or I disagree with him being the King etc.". A hater says dumb stuff like you don't know why other people like him, he is going to ruin the world with his lyrics, etc." So I call em as I see them and there are a LOT of haters out there.
As for the "monkey see, monkey do" theory...what about all the people like me who were listening to him and the Hot Boys way back in the late 90's when they were not even mainstream yet? What about the people who listened to his cd's all day long before he was on a track with all these pop people? Wayne has been hot in the south for over a decade now, so I think that pretty much trumps that theory.
As for who is the king....that is all about preferences. I loved Tupac and still do. I loved Biggie. I still feel Jay Z...but Wayne is what it is now and the hating will not make that go away.

I'm long known for being a staunch critic of Southern Hip-Hop, I do think most of it is utter garbage, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

Fact is, if you can sell over 500K on a Hip-Hop album in these days of downloading/bootlegging, you are truly a special act.
Wayne appeals to all of us, no matter who you are, because he's flawed. This is not an act, this guy is a walking story and we're all interested in what's going to happen next. He also happens to be the BEST lyrical rapper EVER to come out of the South, and that's a strong statement in itself. Lil Wayne has gone beyond rapper and is now a brand in the same vein that Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem and yes, 50 Cent are brands. I have nothing but respect for Wayne because he made himself a better rapper. I know Gillie the kid was writing for him, but no one can write your flow, your delivery, the angst, frustration and sexual subtlety that Wayne expresses in his lyrics. There's also the fact that MTO, [SPAM] and so on have at least one story a day about this guy, so he's always in our subconsious. Top it off with an infectious first single that's being played in the playgrounds, bars, suburbs and strip clubs and you see why this happened. It was the perfect the combination and you have to conclude that Wayne, while he may not be the best, he's the MOST IMPORTANT rapper in the game right now. Somewhere 50 Cent is stewing in anger over those numbers.

Wayne's appearance and behavior is taken as subtle f>ck you to the establishment by Wayne's peers. For all we know it could be act, but if it is, it's a good one. I know it's hard to imagine, but Wayne's behavior and his image is something of a social stance to these young cats.
Be yourself..get rich, that's what they see. Wayne is everything the work-from-the-bottom-get-an-education-quiet-humble-black man isn't, which is exactly with a lot of his fan base can identify with.

I see your point about Wayne having a movement. The problem is when you have kids that are not really going through a struggle trying to emulate another cat. I started in the hood (Newark,N.J.) finished school, and I'm now in the suburbs. It's sad to say but I see too many kids that really don't know about the hood, who are living in the suburbs, and trying to act street.

Well, I see I'm kinda late with my input..but I had to come thru and say something on the topic. For starters, I've been viewing Mediatakeout for a while now w/out having an account...just to see whats the latest "gossip." But I was provoked today to actually get an account just for the sole purpose of commenting on this. Without coming off as being bias because I am from New Orleans and has met Wayne on a few occasions, I must say that a lotta folks out there have it all wrong about this young man. First of all, as he said himself, as far as he is concerned, he is the BEST RAPPER ALIVE. He doesn't care what the next person thinks. That's the way we should all approach things in life. There is always someone out there trying to knock you down. But I must say this...the guy is cold. He started in the rap game when he was 11 years old. He went from rockin w/the Hot Boys to mainstream stardom over a course of time. So he has worked his way to his success. For those that do not know...this is a very educated cat...he was in gifted classes throughout school and surrounded himself with other dudes on that level (i.e. his former artist Currency who I know personally). His wit and his charm...his play with words, these are the things that make his music hot. MAnny Fresh (Cash Money's original Producer/Hitmaker) provided the hottest tracks for Wayne and the former Cash Money cats to spit on. Now he has managed to get with other producers who aren't even from our city and strayed away from New Orleans style rap..and took his ish to the next level..All that I am saying is you don't have to like him, but please respect him. Don't be fooled by his appearance..he's a real person with true talent. Just cuz you don't agree w/his work, that doesn't mean he's to be ridiculed. The rappers that came before him (BIG, Pac, Etc) were all hott..and we know this..BUT damn..you have to give it up for the new players in the game. And by the way..how is what he speaks on any different than any of these other rappers out? In reference to the remarks about he's not talking about nothing. Yo its funny, celebrities have so much fu%kin' influence and most of em' don't even know it. Some people are on here going at each others throat over this weezy posting. Whether you think he is the "best rapper alive" or not he definitely is the hottest or you wouldn't even be reading what I'm typing right now. When it comes to wayne its two type of people...those that are die hard fans or those that hate him(because anyone that's in the middle will be at either end of the spectrum sooner than later). Personally I listen to different types of hip hop for different reasons. If I want to challenge my mind with metaphors and become enlightened I listen to Lupe Fiasco or Common. If I want to hear some one ride a beat to perfection i listen to Kiss or Luda. If u want to hear crazy punchlines and swagger at its best u listen to the yung money. And listen I fully agree with everyone saying that record sales don't mean sh*t towards crowning the best rapper or emcee but it does help the argument. The streets and "the true hip hop heads" could feel u r the hottest emcee since Biggie but if your album only does 500k total, the masses aren't feelin' u. I feel the goal of every hip hop artist should be record sales becuz if its not u might as well rap for the pure passion and get out of your deal. Wayne might not appeal to the "true hip hop heads" who reminisce of great emcees past but he does appeal to the masses and the way it looks he may sell more albums than any other hip hop artist this year. So at the end of the day when the media is constantly tell weezy how great he is and his fans are telling him how great he is and his peers (fellow emcees) are saying the same thing, how do u expect him to view himself....as the "best rapper alive!"
