: MediaTakeOut.com caught wind that Angie Stone is speaking out about racism and colorism in Hollywood. In a recent interview she made the point that it's difficult for dark skinned Black women to get acting roles. But the .... things went left.
Here's what Angie said:
Well, you know it goes back to the very beginning. If you were light skinned you were in, if you were dark skinned you were out. It very well works that way in the industry.Umm Angie .. maybe we're blind .... but when did Jill Scott or Macy Gray become light skinned????You see very [few] dark skinned people on top of the game. Most of the superstars are very fair or mullatto people. You can check your stats. It works that way in the film world too. I have lost almost every single opportunity to star in a film to Macy Gray or Jill Scott because they’re light and I’m dark.
Nah, that sounds like excuses that no longer work. I'm black as nite and have yet to feel like an opportunity has been taken from me b/c I'm dark. You are beautiful ANGIE work on your beauty and market that. MTO what kind of f0cked up editing ya'll got goin on. Is Jill speaking or Angie? Jackazzes!!!! ************************************************* Here's what Jill said:
Well, you know it goes back to the very beginning. If you were light skinned you were in, if you were dark skinned you were out. It very well works that way in the industry.

i'm dark-skinned too......like hershey's kisses.....
angie needs to recognize that chocolate-skinned women are just as beautiful as light-skinned, but jill scott and macy gray aint neva been light-skinned........
besides look at gabrielle union.......she is chocolate skinned but she is just as beautiful and is having a successful career.......
but again....
since when have macy gray and jill scott been light? they are brown but if she's talking like halle berry or beyonce light...she must be blind.
It's crazy! B/c many ppl DO associate light skin with a caramel complexion. I get that ALL THE TIME: from guys and family members. I may be a lil lighter than caramel. But, still... It doesn't make sense to me either. When I think of light skin...I think of Chante Moore or Amel Larrieux. It depends on where you're from I guess. However...on a Black women's color spectrum, Jill and Macy would be considered in the middle (far from Angie), depending on if they tan or not (lol). Idk...let me stop.
I GET Angie tho. However, Jill Scott DESERVES her spot in music, television, and film. She's just one of those multi-talented BLESSED ppl. Deal with it. Maybe Angie should be more creative and see where that leads her. Sing about those issues you have with your skin...India Arie did and Jill gets personal too. So, sometimes, it's us, not them. Macy Gray, well, she's UNIQUE. That's her thing.
UMMMMMMMMM SINCE WHEN JILL SCOTT AND MACY GRAY WAS LITE SKINNED? OH I GUESS COMPARED 2 HER THEIR HIGH YELLOW, HUH? W/E EXCUSES EXCUSES. THE REASON Y SHE AIN'T GETTIN PARTS MIGHT JUST B BCUZ SHE CAN'T ACT WELL. SHE'S JUST MAD BCUZ THEY CAN SING (WELL JILL SCOTT ANYWAY) AND THEIR ACTIN AND SOME GOOD MOVIES WIT GOOD PARTS.......MACY GRAY IS A VERY GOOD ACTRESS.....I THINK SHE NEEDS 2 JUST B AN ACTRESS.......JILL SCOTT CAN DO BOTH.........ANGIE STONE JUST STICK 2 THE SINGIN.......THERE EVRY1 HAS A PIECE OF THE PIE NOW.
Maybe it's not her "skin tone" maybe it's her "attitude", that doesn't get her acting parts. I've seen Angie on Celebritiy Fit Club and even on there she was VERY demanding and acted WAY too much like a DIVA. When people act like THAT, it makes it difficult for them to find work in ANY field, because people aren't going to put up with people who act like THAT..
@ DREADEDBRUH21 You ain't never lied.
I'm not a huge fan of Gabrielle Union's (ANGRY BLACK WOMAN) roles but she can act. Actresses are chosen on a number of factors. It is the vision for the character, their believability, and their look. I hate the fact that pretty celebrities get thrown into the roles solely on their looks and popularity, especially when there are so many talented brothas ans sistas who could do so much better. I know that they think that they will bring their fan base with them, but it ruins the movie when you have 1 or 2 people who sound like they are reading lines instead of delivering them with passion. Anyway, I love Angie's music, but her acting leaves something to be desired.
Dear Angie,
I watched celebrity fit club and I think I know why your NOT getting jobs and it has nothing to do with your skin color or looks (cause lets face it, Macy aint cute!). Its your ridiculous behavior! You proved to be difficult, even to your own team, and didnt seem to "have it together" throughout the whole show. and I think I even recall a pill addiction? or perhaps it was drinking? anyways, after you see a behavioral therapist or get on some good meds to controll your crazy azz...maybe you too can play in a Tyler Perry movie....o to hope some day!! sincerely, Real Deal
o and P.S dont do anymore reality tv...NOT a good look!
FIRST OFF SHE MADE THE WRONG MOVE WHEN SHE DECIDED TO GO ON TO CELEBRITY FIT CLUB AND THEN SHOWED HER A$$. (BAD MOVE) SHE APPEARED LIKE SHE DIDN'T WANT TO DO THE WORK ON A SHOW SHE MADE THE DECISION TO DO. SO WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO WASTE THEIR TIME GIVING HER A SCRIPT. SHE HAS ALOT TO PROVE TO HOLLYWOOD. MAYBE SHE NEEDS TO TRY THEATER FIRST.
I don't know how Angie's acting skills are but clearly Jill Scott can act and so can Macy Gray. I don't believe it is because they are lighter skinned. I remember watching Angie on Celebrity Fit Club and she would make up excuses of why should wouldn't meet her goals from week to week or complained about the challenges on the show, so I'm not paying attention to what she is trying to say right here, so she needs to keep it moving.
Hi Angie,
Your drummer introduced me to you in Harlem a few years ago. I remember how protective you were of me because we're from the same hometown. I told you I was up here working as a fashion designer for 12 years. You still treated me like I was a little girl, outside w/ no parental supervision. It was very nurturing of you.
I love your music. Your velvet, raspy, & soulful voice reminds me of Betty White.
If you did make that comment above, continue being a beautiful, uplifting & strong person.
Don't ever play the victim, because the Spirit admires a man who knows how to bear uphappiness w/ courage. You can reinvent yourself just like you did when you lost the weight & changed your hair.
I should have told you to put the weight back on, my plus size fit model makes $225/hr just to be a size 22.
Maybe it's those "soup-cooler" lips, and not your beautiful complexion. People need to stop playing the "complexion-card". If they didn't want a Black actress, they wouldn't have chosen the other two because it white people's eyes, Black is black. It's us (and some Spanish folks)who play each other against each other with the light and dark stupidity. Wake up people!!!
I totally agree, maybe it her attitude or acting ability that doesn't get her the roles. I have never seen AS act, but I have seen JS and she is great, not to mention she probably has more experience than AS. So of course, with anything, experience counts for something.
I get so tired of people pulling the colorism card. Its 2008. We have a blk nominee for the presidency. If color was an issue, wouldn't there be a lighter skin guy getting the vote. Shut up and sit down. People are so quick to point the finger at the obvious (there light and im dark) No B!tch, maybe because you suck and they don't. Hmmmm.
Hmmm Well maybe Jill and Macy are more popular than her because they have proper management teams, assistants, and agents that's making sure they get gigs and proper promotion. It has nothing to do with their skin complexion because macy and jill are not light-skinned. Hmmm seems like Angie is bitter and easy to pit the blame on external reason instead of looking at the problems within herself. She is talented but seems to lack drive. I could be wrong but she appeared that way to me when I saw her on celebrity fit club
i love you angie, but come on now girl! if anyone saw the fighting temptations, we all know why you haven't gotten many other acting jobs. jill scott did an amazing job, and so did macy gray...although most of macys roles doesn't seem like it required much acting on her part, she seemed to be acting like herself which is entertaining enough. also, on celebrity fit club, angie acted like a fish eyed fool! i was so disappointed and embarassed in and for her. by the way, macy and jill are not light skinned as many others have said, but i guess it is relative, maybe they look like skin to angie because they are lighter than her. some of the greatest actresses ever were dark skinned...c. tyson, a. bassett, the list goes on and on. i think its like that movie that is coming out..."maybe they are just not that into you, boo"
Angie Stone sucks!! This chick was on dat fat show Celebrity Fit club actin like she a diva etc . Macy Gray and Jill Scott are not light skin !! Do when need a skin o meter for Angie Stone
Examples of Lighter Skin: Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Dj Drama
Browner Skin : Jill Scott ,Janet Jackson, Usher
Darkerskin :AngieStone , India Arie ,Tyrese
Angie Stone has always been a cry baby !!
I don't recognize Jill Scott or Macy Gray as dark skin either. Although I do acknowlege that colorism does exist within our community, (in fact I just watched a special on it the other day) there can be other factors as to why she didn't get the roles that have nothing to do w/ colorism. I can surely say that Jill Scott is definitely a great actress!
here we go again, no angie its your lack of effort and work ethics. you make great music but only will do but so much. your personality stinks and you come off like a bitter woman who feels some how cheated. if you want the parts they get then stop hating and start acting like you hungery. maybe you just can't act!! not everyone can act. but i love your music.
The reality is they may be some truth to what Angie is saying. I have work in the entertainment industry for years and color and race is still an issue; regardless of how talented you might be. 1 in 3 people in the U.S. are considered non-white, but in this upcoming fall tv season, there are NO new black shows and the ones that exist have either been cancelled or moved to what by industry standards are considered non high viewership days such as Friday and Saturday ("Everybody Hates Chris" & "The Game"). Now given, Angie may not be the most prolific or talented actress, but to pretend as if the race issue or the "light is right" mentally still doesn't exist in film and television is just not true. Part of the problem is, we are so use to excepting it and thinking that things have completely change, we ignore the obvious. For example, "Beverly Hills 90210" is being brought back next season with a new cast of kids from West Beverly High. There happens to be only one black actor; Tristan Wilds from "The Wire", on the entire show, and he plays the adopted kid of an all white family. Now whether one considers this obvious racism or just creative development for the show, it still does not speak to the melting pot which is american televison viewership. Has it been so long that no one remembers in the entire cast of "Friends", which was a show that took place in NYC, a black face(Aisha Tyler) was not present until season 9. Whether you choose to agree with why Angie Stone believes she has or hasn't received certain roles, one can not despute that racism still exist in Hollywood. Maybe not as much as 20 years but it is still a deciding factor in what shows get picked up and who is cast in those shows; I see it everyday!
Angie Stone well she seems like she has a attitude problem, a bitch aka diva. Especially she has no right to be a diva when she is basically a nobody and has a fat child to take care of. She is right that society in general equates light skinned with being right, and dark skinned as being wrong. But the light vs dark beef is not always in effect. And to the people that said Oprah, and all these other dark skinned people. Yes, there is some in the Industry on top. But they are few. Also it is usually bi-racial or light skinned blacks being showcased and spotlighted in the industry. It is not always racism. Part of it is that America is mostly white, and they naturally rather see people they can relate to or see a reflection of themself in that entertainer/public figure. That is why Rihanna has been sucessful, i equation is that she is light skinned, light eyes. And a lean tall body. She fits mainstream, White people can find a relation to her. But someone like Angie Stone who is dark and with obvious negro features, they can't relate to that. Like if America was mostly black, you'd rather see your own people, right? Kinda makes sense. Angie Stone is not mainstream, especially her being a big woman. It is what is. TRhe Industry is based on looks, you can make it without looks, but you have to work hard than everyone else. Also Jill and Macy are not light skinned!
If y'all think she joking y'all trippin..I didn't make the auditions when I had str8 hair..This may sound odd as corny as it sounds, when I changed my hair to curly..the industry gave me a second look..The Industry is vain like that.
See,fans they majority of the time don't recognize how the industry works,so you would think ANgie was bullsh!ttin on us but she's NOT...again,The Industry is vain like that!
I ususally don't comment, but I used to like Angie before she went on celebrity fit club and made a total azz out of herself on national television. She is very talented and I've loved her music for years, but she is full of excuses about everything. She thought she was a superstar trying to lose weight and didn't want to admit that she was a loser like the rest of them, that's why she was on th show. Macy Gray and Jill Scott aren't the greatest actresses in the world, but they do have much more character and better personalities than Angie. Maybe she has been turned down for roles because she auditions and they realize that she can't act. Or maybe because she has no roles to use as an example, the execs don't even ask her to come in for a reading. They've seen Jill and Macy before so they know what they're getting. Plus Jill has acted since she was in her early teens, she went to arts schools, acted in theatre programs, and was a major character in the long running off broadway play, RENT!! Angie, are you crazy?? You really need to concentrate on continuting to lose the weight because Jill and Macy Gray are totally night light skinned. Alicia Keys is light skinned, Maya is light skinned, Macy, NOT light skinned....phew, that's the most I've ever said on this site, LOL
She has a point because people like Rihanna can get recognition over a Tierra Marie, or a beyonce over a Kelly rowland, etc. We tell ourselves that its b/c Rihanna and Beyonce are better but you mean to tell me they can't find one dark skinned sista to blow up? There's Alicia Keys, Mariah, Beyonce, Rihanna, even the Cassie's, Mya, bi-racial Amerie, etc....
Now with that said, I haven't seen Jill Scott or Macy Gray in too many movies either.

Angie,
Please give us all a break!!! I'm dark a dark sister and you are only limited by what you let limit you. You don't have talent when it comes to acting, maybe? I can tell that by watching Celebrity Fit Club that your attitude sucks. Get over your childhood wounds and soar!!!
We're not buying this.
Angie,
The gigs won't fall in ur lap. Get yo ass up and do something about it, I know the money is in the movies, but damn step your cred up and drop a hot album. Maybe you'll get some type of consideration. Macy Gray is not the prettiest woman you'll ever see, everyone knows that. I can say that, with her attitude, and that raspy voice she gonna stay getting good money in the industry.
Angie is right, this issue does exist and all a person has to do is look at the media to be convinced. Jill nor Macy is light skinned, but theyre lighter than angie...just about everyone heard the quote if you're light you're right, if you're brown stick around and if you're black stay back. This has been going on for a long time and until we learn to love each other, our identity and ourselves, it will never change and only get worse.
It's sad that you had to take a route like that Angie. It's speaks volumes as to why you sistas can never get along. It reminds me of the same dumb sht Angela Bassett said regarding Halle Berry getting an Oscar in a role that called for her to have sex with Billy Bob Thorton in Monster's Ball.I never had any respect for Angela after that and never will I have any for Angie Stone as well.Real Talk.
PEOPLE, ANGIE IS TELLING THE TRUTH!I WORK IN THE FILM INDUSTRY AND SEE THESE THINGS FIRST HAND. STOP BLAMING HER BECAUSE SHE IS SPEAKING THE TRUTH. SHE IS NOT MAKING EXCUSES! JUST BECAUSE A PERSON SPEAKS OUT AGAINST INJUSTICES DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE USING THAT AS A COP OUT. THERE IS A HIERARCHY OF SKIN TONE AND HAIR TEXTURES IN THE COMMUNITY. LIGHT SKINNED/MULATTO WOMEN ARE SEEN AS THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN, WHEREAS MEDIUM BROWN WOMEN ARE IN THE MIDDLE AND DARK BLACK WOMEN ARE AT THE BOTTOM. THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR BROWN WOMEN IN ENTERTAIMENT BUT EVEN MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR LIGHT SKINNED WOMEN. IT HAS BEEN LIKE THIS SINCE SLAVERY DAYS. BACK IN THE DAY, YOU HAD THE COTTON CLUB AND YOU HAD TO BE LIGHTER THAN A PAPER BAG TO BE A CHORUS GIRL (SIMILAR TO TODAY'S VIDEO MODELS) BUT EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, A MEDIUM BROWN WOMEN WAS GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY. I AM BROWN SKINNED AND I HAVE BEEN TREATED BETTER THAN DARKER SISTERS, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS LIGHTER WOMEN. WE NEED TO STOP DENYING THESE TRUTHS...
There's some truth to what she's saying, but in this case she's just making excuses. When you get down to it, Jill and Macy have better management and they are VISIBLE. When they have an album being released, they're everywhere promoting it, trying to get their faces out to the public. Angie, not so much. They've made themselves household names and that's where they are different from her. The only time you see Angie on the cover of anything, she's talking about her failed relationship with D'Angelo. (No matter what, that somehow get slipped into the conversation. And maybe she indulges it because at least she still gets recognition from being the mother of his child.) I'm not being mean, but no one wants to hear that broken record anymore. I think she's a great singer and a beautiful dark skinned woman, but she has an air of sour grapes about her that probably keeps her from getting roles.
ONLY UGLY DARK SKIN SISTERS USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE...GUESS WHAT LADIES...BEAUTY COMES IN ALL SHADES...DONT BE MAD AT YOUR SKIN TONE OR ANYBODY ELSES....BE MAD AT YOUR FEATURES....I KNOW ALOT OF UGLY LIGHT, MEDIUM AND DARK SKIN WOMEN AND I ALSO KNOW ALOT OF BEAUTIFUL LIGHT ,MEDIUM AND DARK SKIN SISTAHS.....GET OVER YOUR SELF ANGIE....WHEN IT ALL COMES DOWN TO IT IT IS THE INNER BEAUTY THAT COUNTS AND JILL SCOTT EXUDES INNER BEAUTY...MACY GRAY JUST HAS A FAR OUT PERSONALITY AND THATS WHAT MAKES HER INTERESTING....FIND YA NICHE AND STOP BEING A BYTCH...
I MET ANGIE STONE-SHE LOOKS LIKE A SHORT UMPA LUMPA IN PERSON...NO JOKE. HER SKIN COLOR IS NOT THE ISSUE...BESIDES THERE ARE POPULAR DARK SINGERS THAT GOT ACTING PARTS..SUCH AS LAURYN HILL (SHE IS ALITTLE CRAZY NOW) BUT SHE GOT ACTING PARTS AND WAS POPULAR...FANTASIA...THERE ARE OTHERS. IT IS TRUE HOWEVER SOCIETY DOES PUSH THE LIGHTER HUE WOMEN AND BI-RACIAL WOMEN AS BEING THE EXAMPLE FOR BEAUTY-THAT IS EVIDENT ON BET-BUT WE BUY INTO IT TOO.
Angie, quit whining and take a script writing course and write your own movie role. Hollywood has been that way since forever, which is why brothers like Spike Lee and Gordon PArks, etc started writing and directing their own films. Write your own role and quit waiting for someone else to hand you something. As I see it, light skinned actresses aren't working that much either.
WE as a race need to stop writing topics ,it is like this off as a hate before addressing the issue. YES,it is true most lighter skinned people are given more oppurtunities..but not all the time. look at all the major black actors and entertainers. majority of em are light skin. also remember what is light or lighter to a dark skin person might not be the same to a lighter skinned person. All biases to the side this is a very true issue regardless of angies intentions. lets get serious as a race and stop assuming things as a ''hate''. to be real the slang word ''hate'' is just us bein brainwashed into thinkn that everything negative said toward another between another is ''hating'', therefore destroying the way we talk as a people, and eliminating our ability to ''mend'' issues
@ Bluboy...she is not acting like the typical insecure dark skinned women. Everybody is insecure about something whether your dark or light. I have a lot of insecure light skin friends that wish, there skin color was chocolate, pretty and smooth like mine. And speaking for dark skin women, its all about how confident you are with yourself, dont let nobody make you think, because someone is lighter than you that they have better opportunities or look better than you, cause they dont. When I walk in a room with my chocolate, dark skinned self all eyes are on me because, I stand out. I am confident and I know that I am beautiful. That's whats wrong with black people now, or maybe in the south there might still be a lot of that going on, but in California the guys out here love dark skinned women.
And on Angie Stone she is a complaining, insure bi@%h. And that has nothing to do with skin color.
LOL@BrooklynKing!
The following offers my rebuttal to this colorstricken nonsense:
Djimon Hounsou Idris Elba Morris Chestnut Eddie Murphy Hell, Charlie Murphy Omar Epps Arsenio Hall Jamie Foxx Oprah Cicely Tyson Don Cheadle Tichina Arnold Camile Windbush etc.
They are not light skinned by a long shot, but they are talented, something Angie isn't when it comes to acting by comparison to competition. Let's not so easily play the race card because you are feeling dejected. We have a enough hard time being black without being subjected to further division within our own race based off shades of light and dark, embrace it all and get an acting coach.
you people are slow she is calling them light skinned compared to her & I'm not a big fan of Angie and the reason she can't get as much work is probably bc of her attitude however I definitely feel where she is coming from most of the women that represent black beauty are light skinned women and stop bringing up Gabby bc yes she is a beautiful dark brown woman however she is just one in comparison to many many light ones....I can understand what she is saying and I'm a light skinned woman myself.
@SHELLFACE....THE PEOPLE YOU LISTED ARE MEN! IT IS DIFFERENT FOR MEN THAN WOMEN...SCHOLARS WHO STUDY THIS HAVE ACKNOWELEDGE THAT COLORISM AFFECTS WOMEN DIFFERENTLY THAN MEN. OUR SOCIETY TEACHES THAT FEMININTY AND LIGHTNESS GO TOGETHER AND THAT DARKNESS AND MASCULINITY GO HAND IN HAND. EVEN FOR WHITE PEOPLE, THE BIGGEST FEMALE STARS HAVE BLONDE HAIR AND THE BIGGEST MALE STARS HAVE DARK HAIR.
To someone as dark as Angie, brown skin is still considered light because its lighter than their own skin. Also, you can be LIGHT brown skinned which is what Macy and Jill Scott are. They are not yellow but they have lighter brown skin. Gabrielle Union and Oprah have MEDIUM brown skin. There is a difference. Jill Scott even made a comment one time that she used to get teased when she was growing up because she was light skinned and had long hair. So she obviously considers herself light. Regardless, Angie does have a point. Darker skinned people have a harder time being accepted. And its a damn shame! I have found that many dark skinned people have a complex about their color because they have had to deal with this crap since they were a kid. Black people we need to be ashamed of ourselves, Always elevating anybody that looks closer to White and tearing down anybody that looks more Black. And as terrible as white folks have treated us we still want to be like them? So sad! Dark skin is simply beautiful and does not show age!
MTO: Umm Angie .. maybe we're blind .... but when did Jill Scott or Macy Gray become light skinned???? ---------------------------------------- I think shes refering to a lighter color of brown.....but Angie DOES have some self hate issues.....could have a lot to do with how society treated her as a child being a dark sister.... She just has to learn to ride out and over that shyt.....Cause Angie is cute and talanted....she just has to know it!!
OMG: It always has to go to the skin color. That is so annoying and so pitiful. However, I won't discredit the fact that some people doe have color issues and that does affect people. But, everything happens for people in the right timing. Light, dark, fat, skinny, ugly, pretty...it all depends on the timing and God's blessings and favor. Besides, just because we know your name doesn't mean we want to see you in a film! You have to know how to act...and based off of those comments, I doubt you'll be working anytime soon. And, Ms Angie, if you wanna act so bad, there are plenty of up and coming plays that would love to have your name on it. So, pay your acting dues and change that 'tude and maybe (just maybe) good things will happen for you.
@filmlover--No i completely get that point and agree with you. She is making it seem like it is just a color issue rather than the talent she can offer to a client when compared to Jill or Macy (that's an oxymoron in regards to Macy)or whoever. She would lead you to believe that dark skinned people in hollywood, period, lack work or have a harder time to gain roles if they are of the darker or darkest persuasion of the black spectrum when indeed that is not so much the case given those i provided as examples. Albeit, yes it is inherently hard for black actors and actresses to gain work in comparion to their white counter parts to spring board them into A-list success, but it isnt as Angie would lead one to believe. Her talent lies with music, acting in itself is a hard thing to break into, coupled with a bad attitude, she had limited herself before she has even had a chance to start. Now that she had played this kind of race card out there, it may even add to the already unpopular persona she appears to have.
Angie Stone needs a wake-up call...nobody is hating on you cause of your PITCH BLACK SKIN TONE...they are hating on you because of your funked up attitude..Many self-hating darkskinned females use that as an excuse so people can feel sorry for them and they can feel sorry for themseleves...IF YOU NOTICE DARKSKINNED females(BROWNSKINNED FEMALES INCLUDED...like JILL SCOTT AND MARY J BLIGE) tend to have an inferiority complex and should not be seen in a positive light when they are OBVIOUSLY MENTALLY ILL...
I find it really interesting that a lot of peoples reponse on here automatically goes to Angie and her attitude. Now I will not dispute that via the media of "Celebrity Fit Club",Angie didn't necessarily depict herself in the most flattering light, but one can not despute what here personal experience might have been in the entertaiment industry. It is really easy to think she is playing the race card, but entertainment and fashion industry in this country are one of the only industry where you can directly be rejected to your face based on race or ethnicity. I know plenty of actor, actresses and models who have been told DIRECTLY to their faces that they are not ethnic enough, too ethnic, or their look is not marketable regardless of their ability or talents. And not to questions those african-americans who have succeeded or even won Oscars, but one has to also look at what they won for or the quality of work they are offered. Halle Berry won an Oscar for playing a widowed abusive mother who got dug out doggy-style on her living room floor by Billy Bob Thorton. Denzel Washington won one for playing a crooked cop. Whoopi Goldberg won one for playing a con woman psychic. And Haddie McDaniels got one for playing a mammie. Realistically speaking, are these the best roles that african americans have played in the last 60 years, I doubt it. But it is a dipiction of how Hollywood still views some people of color on film and tv.
Now I absolutely love Angie Stone...At a time when most R&B female singers come off as bitter, angry man haters, she stepped up and did "Brother" which was a dedication to all the black men out here doing their thing...And I will always love her for that..
But she's just wrong here....
I think we know that there still remains some degree of color favoritism, but folks can't use that as a crutch to explain every failure they have, and I think that's what she's doing...
If she wants to make that claim, she needs to use a better example than Jill, a brown skinned, natural hair sporting sista.....Or Macy, who is also brown and often sports natural too....If anything Jill and Macy getting roles as full figured, natural sistas is opening doors...
Angie, you are too talented and better than that...Stop with the divisive statements, excuse making and step your game up because I know you have it in you.
I can agree to a certain degree what Angie but I am positive it doesn't apply to her. In this case Angie B. this is ALL YOU!!!! The bad thing about tape episodes of REALITY TV is that it can always be played back and you showed your entire azz on Celebrity Fit Club for the whole world to see. I was so disappointed seeing you like that because I was excited about a REAL Black woman making an appearance on this highly rated show for VH1. You made us look just like they sterotype us....fat, lazy and ignorant!!!! Take a look in the mirror and not just at your skin tone to figure out what the problem is. Jill is too regal to be dragged around in your mess!
@SHELLFACE...CAN YOU NAME MANY DARK SKINNED ACTRESSES WHO ARE PORTRAYED AS DESIRABLE? I AGREE THAT ANGIE MAY NOT HAVE THE TALENT TO BE AN ACTRESS, BUT NEITHER DOES ALOT OF PEOPLE..HER SKIN TONE BEING DARK MAY IN FACT BE A BARRIER AND A FACTOR AS WHY SHE IS NOT GETTING THE ROLES SHE WANTS...SO WHILE I WILL AGREE WITH YOU THAT ANGIE MAY NOT BE QUALIFIED TO BE A ACTRESS, THAT STILL DOES NOT NEGATE HER POINT ABOUT SKIN COLOR...
Good Girl 2....don't you tell me to shut up!!! I can say whatever I want on this post. Everyone on here is entitled to that. If you really think that what I said was bulls**t then you really are "out of touch" with the black community. Please open your eyes and stop being so mean and hostile. I'll pray for you SISTA...or maybe that's the problem, you really aren't a SISTA.
Let's keep it real, many people do perfer light skinned woman, but this isn't the case here. I'm a dark skinned woman and find this true.....
But the problem with ANGIE....is that she isn't PRETTY and I'm BEING NICE... It's not her waist or her skin color.....IT's HER FACE....Keep it real
She is always acting so old and poking out those big A/S/* LIPS...I couldn't imagine her playing some of the roles Jill and Macy has played.
DAMN.... i hope angie not reading these posts. she might want to hang herself...sounds like she already has low self esteem....
or..or..or she might pull a Micheal ..and bleach her skin...which i hope nope
Im just sayin ...the way shes talkin now who knows...she sounds desperate..
I hope she dont do what star did.. Good luck Angie
1st off acting is a God given talent. People shouldn't get roles because of looks, skin complexion or sympathy. Now I neva seen Angie act but I can almost guess she's not a great actress either. Her skin tone might be a problem but it still doesn't matter if she can't act. I could see if she was an excellent actress but got rejected because she was too dark. Not the case here and her argument is weak. She's trying to put blame on her skin tone but this whole arguement can be thrown out if her skills are truly garbage!!!
If you were old enough to know any better you would not make such a wack azz comment. The color code does exist within the Afikan American community between light skin and dark skin. And if you knew anything worth while you certainly would have known that what Angie states has merit. That's why so many black women wear long flowing weaves and put in colored contact lenses to look as European as possible. There are certain Carribean countries where the women use skin lighteners as a way of life. If they were comfortable in their dark skin as I am in mine why then would they find it necessary ala Michael Jackson to lighten their skin in the first place? Angie makes a valid point and if you would read a damn book every now and then you would not be such an idiot. Race and skin color is a major issue in Amerikkka, even among us.
Angie needs to stop. The reason she loses parts is because she has an attitude. She was getting on my nerve on CFC. See, she had a role and messed it up. She doesn't have anything unusual about her like Macy's voice, who's also dark skinned by the way. And she doesn't have a pleasant smile like Jill. It isn't because Jill is lighter, Jill looks better. Whoppi knocked that dark skinned door down a long time ago. You have to get in where you fit in boo. Angie, Fire your agent.
I'm so tired of Angie Stone with her constant complaining. If she's not complaining about how D'angelo left her for a trophy girlfriend after she allegedly helped him to get his musical career off the ground, she's complaining about how her music is under-rated. Now this? Her complexion has nothing to do with it. Quite frankly, she's not all that attractive, she complains about everything, and lastly she's too old. Lets face it, nowadays the industry want fresh faces... fresh attractive faces. oh, and Angie lay off of the excessive amounts of lip gloss and lipsticks... not a good look for you dear.
If she is saying check the stats for Music she is right...when you have Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna on top and you got Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Rowland who can even buy a solo hit record! You got to ask yourself what is really going on!
Now, I believe she was talking compared to her they are alot lighter skin! And again that is true!
NOW IF ANGIE SAID THIS DUMB ASS SHYT SOMEBODY NEEDS TO BYTCH SLAP HER PLEASE. CUS EVERYBODY AND THEY MAMA KNOW NEITHER JILL NOR MACY EVER STARRED IN SHYT! MACY DONE DID A FEW CAMEO APPEARANCES IN SOME SHYT AND JILL CO-STARRED IN TYLER'S SHYT AND SOME OTHER CAMEO SHYT. AND AIN'T NEITHER ONE OF THEM LIGHT SKINNED. AND YOU KNOW GOOD AND DAMN WELL ANGIE DON'T IN NO FREAKIN WAY LOOK LIKE THAT PHOTO SHOPPED TO DEATH PICTURE. MTO STOP THE MADNESS PLEASE !!!
Really Angie? Really. Could it be that Jill Scott and Macy Gray can actually act and you can't? Newsflash...you are not entitled to anything. And by the way, that ridiculous little rant guarantees that you won't be getting any roles because no one wants to work with an enormous, angry shrew with a chip on her shoulder.
this is the same reason i couldn't get with tameka foster. she made the comment that black women in particular didn't like her marrying usher because she was darkskinned. it's her own insecurity.
angie blamed her color and weight to the fact that she and d'angelo weren't together anymore. sounds like a simple case of insecurity.
O.k. Ummm, Angie has some issues. I know that skin discrimination still exists among us, but have it ever occurred to her that they may be more talented? Gabrielle Union and Jennifer Hudson get roles and they are dark-skinned. Jill Scott and Macy Gray are NOT even light-skinned. They are brown-skinned.
YES ANGIE IS RIGHT. MOST TOP FEMALE PERFORMERS AND ACTRESSES ARE NOT DARK. GABRIELLE UNION IS CLOSE TO THAT SKIN COLOR AND MANY ARE SUPRISED TO SEE HER GETTING ATTENTION
LIKELY YES MANY ROLES THAT ANGIE HAS GONE AFTER JIL OR MACY WHO ARE BOTH LIGHT SKINNED HAS GOTTEN THE ROLES. HARDLY DO YOU SEE A DARK FEMALE AS THE LOVE INTEREST.
BOTH OF THEM ARE LIGHT. SHE IS DARK. ALL ARE ATTRACTIVE THOUGH.
@WENN GORGEOUS BABY!!!!
I THINK ANGIE IS OFF THE MARK WITH THIS ONE. JILL AND MACY AREN'T SO LIGHT, BUT SHE IS A BIT OLDER. SHE'S 47 YEARS OLD 6 YEARS OLDER THAN MACY(WHO I THINNK LOOKS YOUNGER THAN SHE IS) AND 11 YEARS OLDER THAN JILL. I DON'T THINK THEY'LL REALLY BE UP FOR THE SAME ROLES. I THINK THEY'RE ALL TALENTED, THOUGH. ANGIE SHOULDN'T BLAME JILL AND MACY FOR NOT GETTING ROLES.
@alisamoe....... I totally agree with you!! Angie is a very bitter person, I saw her on BET she was talking about Alicia Keys indicating that Alicia stole the name of album she was going to name her album...yada yada yada! A bunch of BS....then she goes on the radio station to explain to everyone why she brought her man a Humma...yada yada yada.....
Get over it Angela!
@SmartBrownFox.....I apologize for telling you to shut up! It's just that I get so tired of the whole light skin dark skin BS! There are ugly light skin people and there are ugly dark skin people Angie happens to be an ugly dark skin lady...just as alisamoe said she uses and Excessive amount of lip gloss which doesn't help with her! Maybe it upsets me so much b/c I don’t look at a dark skin person an automatically see ugly…..I personally think that dark skin people are beautiful in fact that’s how I prefer my men tall dark and handsome! Again my apologies! Have a good weekend!
@Tempertese…..where ya dirty azz been at girl!
If studio heads can completely judge a woman by the way her t*ts hang like cow udders over a male actor whilst straddling him in bed and give her the role (in a major film) based solely on that, is it so far fetched that they might not see dark blue-Black as beautiful and reach for easier to market lighter shades of Black?
All I would say is who feels it knows it. Can anyone name a well known dark, dark Black successful actor? Coincidence? Even Djmon Hounsou is mostly considered only when they need an African character, not for the account executive role.
@filmlover - NO ONE IS NEGATING HER COMMENTS OR SAYING HER FEELINGS TOWARDS THE MATTER ARENT VALID, BUT GIVEN THE QUOTE...SHE BRINGS UP JILL SCOTT AND MACY GRAY? MAYBE I WOULD CONSIDER HER STATEMENT BETTER IF SHE GAVE A BETTER REFERENCE THAN THE TWO MENTIONED. THEY HAVEN'T BEEN IN ANY GROUND BREAKING ROLES THEMSELVES. NAME BLACK ACTRESSES IN A DESIRABLE ROLE YOU ASK...
WHOOPIE GOLDBERG NELL CARTER FLORIDA EVANS PATTI LABELLE TONI FROM GIRLFRIENDS (JILL MARIE SCOTT) LAUREN HILL (SISTER ACT MOVIE) TICHINA ARNOLD ANNA MARIE HORSFORD (THELMA FROM AMEN) TO NAME A FEW
SO THERE HAVE BEEN TALENTED, TALENTED, AGAIN TALENDTED DARK DARK NOT LIGHT DARK SKINNED ACTRESSES GETTING THEIR CHANCE. ALTHOUGH IT IS A POINT OF VALIDITY SHE ADRESSES, I PERSONALLY DON'T FEEL THIS IS A CASE OF SHADE-ISM AS MUCH AS IT IS HER INSECURITY OF NOT LANDING ROLES NO MATTER HOW MEDIOCRE BASED ON HER LACK OF TALENT.
This is intresting.... what about Monique? she's a dark brown woman not dark as Tyresse or Wyclef, but she's not looking at the success Monique has had with her skin tone. I do agree with Angle Stone.... though Biracial people, lighter skin people do have more opportunity in the media world. I'm not going to ignore it or deny it anymore.. to an extent I'm glad she is being honest.... every brown or dark skin woman doesn't share her same experience, but I am so glad she's speaking up about this situation. But as for Macy Gray and Jill scott being light skin... they are not Jill is a light brown while Macy Gary is brown. But she's speaking the truth.... she just feels there light than her because she's dark skin. I hope she can overcome this, but I relate to what she is saying.
God dog, after reading some of your comments...Look Jill Scott is not light skinned, black people..Halle Berry is Carmel..She is not really light. She like almost light. Do you all even know what light sinned is. Light Skinned is yellow, not carmel or brown. Lisa bonet is light, so is that girl from girlfriends, you know, Karen Parson from fresh prince, Sade, anyways. Light skinned people dont have more of an opportunity than dark or brown skinned blacks. The people who have better opportunities are those who are willing to do some nasty or homo [EXPLETIVE] to gain movie roles
I wish black people would stop publicly blaming all their plights on white people. It gets old and tired. It happens sometimes but when you refer to it all the time it makes blacks look spoiled. I can see how whites think we pull the RACE CARD any time now. So life is a lil tougher for blacks. GET OVER IT. Complaining nonstop makes us look like we do nothing but blame whites all day everyday. No wonder they throw Al Sharpton in our face with a smirk. Cuz all blacks plight is forced on whites. Get your life together and persevere. Stop using race as an old and lame EXCUSE.
ALL Y'ALL ARE SO STUPID OPEN YOUR MINDS!!!
She is telling the truth, you don't even see that many dark skin women on magazines especially "mainstream" magazines!!! Of course theirs dark skin women in the entertainment industry, but how many of them are "superstars" though???? Even Halle Berry said she had problems getting movie roles early in her career because she was a black woman. Now, if Halle Berry had problems which she is very talented, you know it's gonna be even harder for a darker complexion sister!! The entertainment industry is still color struck!! Even music now mostly the "superstars" who are recognize world wide are very fair or light skin. You can't even name to many dark skin sisters "superstars" in the world now. Even Nia Long said the same thing about dark skin sisters and she's a great actress and very beautiful, but she don't get the recognition like Halle Berry or someone. I'm still waiting for a dark skin sister to be a "Superstar" not just a celebrity but a "Superstar"!!! So, actually use your brains and think about the situation before saying that it's hate!!! These white people rather see somebody related to their looks which is light skin or fair skin. Even Access Hollywood said it wasn't to many dark skin sisters or black women on "Mainstream" magazines!! The black women who do be on the cover are very fair skin or light skin!! It's nice to see some one like Gabriel Union gets so many movie roles, but you still don't see her ass on to many "Mainstream" magazine covers and stuff REAL TALK!!! I be wondering why their not many dark skin women in the music industry being successful like I know theirs some dark skin sisters that can SANG!! Like to me it doesn't matter what's your skin tone, but in the entertainment industry it looks like it does!! Even, in our own culture it looks like some black folks prefer lighter women REAL TALK!! Jennifer Hudson is also representing for the dark skin sisters, you see she blew Beyonce ass out the water. See America actually got it right that time with Jennifer, they actually look at her talents instead of her brown skin complexion. Like someone said Beyonce was the lead in Dreamgirls, but Jennifer Hudson was the Star!! See, the people who did the movie I think they didn't think that Jennifer Hudson was gonna blow up like she did, they really wanted Beyonce to get all the recognition because she was the "mainstream" darling lol. America choose Jennifer instead and they finally got something right!!! So, actually think before you say Angie is hating, because she is very talented also!!
EXACTLY Stylegirl! you speaking the truth... it's sad... Angie is right people just won't admit it... because it's rare we talk about this in the black community. It probably does have something to do with her talent as an actress and her skin color. Exactly what I stated in my previous message above.
This issue is very real, and as much as we talk about "the white-man," and he disses us, we do more direct damage to each other than anyone else can do, in this day and time anyway. If Barack was dark, he wouldn't be as far as he is now. I've never forget looking at Howard Sterns show years ago, and the lady who was the most downloaded internet personality at the time, was on his show. Howard's always [EXPLETIVE]' with the race issue, so he asked her if she'd ever been with a black man. She paused and said, "Yea, but he was mixed." I couldn't [EXPLETIVE]' believe it. "We help perpetuate this [EXPLETIVE]. There are so many brothers who look at light-skinned sisters as trophies. Angie's got a point, like it or not.
You're reaching now Angie. You could have never played that role better than Jill in "Why Did I Get Married". Their complexion doesn't vary that much from yours, so perhaps there's something you're carrying on you shoulder that the producers are seeing. Knock it off quick girl, life is too short and the opportunities are plentiful.
Why are people acting like what she's saying isn't possible? You think Beyonce and Rihanna are famous because we like her? No, it's because their light skin is relatable to white america. How often to do you see a dark skinned black woman in make-up and hair color commercials. I'm sure it doesn't help that Angie may have a bad attitude, but Sanaa Lathan and Nia Long has said the same things of how they don't get roles like their white counterparts so you know Angie doesn't have a chance!
I really didnt want to say anything in here because this issue seems to be a mute point. I knew what this was going to turn into: half the people turning it into a light-skin/ dark skin some people thinking that 'all dark skinned sistahs are jealous of them' and some who have to profess that they are proud of their brown skin.
In this 21 century of living America, through slavery, reconstruction civil right movement and a black president and a beautiful dark skinned first lady. so,angie please get off it you are the color you supposed to be
