Am I the only poster on MTO who happened to watch Vols. 1 and 2 of Hip Hop vs. America on Wednesday and Thursday of this week? This is an example of the types of issues the panelists were discussing on the show.
It is disgusting that WOMEN, especially BLACK WOMEN, have become conditioned to think that being called a bitch by anyone, especially a man, is a term of endearment. What comes after he calls you a bitch is him treating you like a bitch. People run around singing songs like, "I beat that bitch with a bat" like it's a hymn or something. We are destroying ourselves with our low self esteem and negative opinions of ourselves, along with the negative images we continue to project to the world on a daily basis as well as in the media.
It is sad and disgusting that anyone, male or female, regardless of race, would condone a man putting his hands on a woman. With that stated, I do not agree with women "popping off" on a man for no justifiable reason. All and still, it's called RESPECT. Respect my space if I tell you I don't want you to sit near/with me. (This is what I hate about bars and clubs.) Respect the fact that I tell you I am not interested in speaking to you/dealing with you. (I came to drink or listen to music, not to listen to you.) Respect it when I tell you I don't have time to talk because I am on my way to a destination. (I don't want you trying to "holla" when my focus is on something important like banking, paying my bills or even if I'm just chillin'.) Even if I don't respond when you speak, respect my silence and keep it moving. (I don't always feel like talking. Most dudes can't just say hello without having to ask your name, age, marital status, astrological sign, etc. Miss me with that!)
You don't have a right to just run up on someone and start talking, but when you do, they have a right to ignore you. Don't come back with some, "B!tch, f@ck you" comment. Leave it be and be silent as they are. Learn from your lessons/mistakes.
