: DETROIT (AP) — Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick spent the night in a one-man jail cell with no TV and a phone only for collect calls, the consequence of violating his bond in a criminal case that has dogged him for months.
His legal problems could get much worse.
State police have wrapped up their investigation of a confrontation between Kilpatrick and a sheriff's detective who claims he was pushed while recently trying to serve a subpoena on the mayor's friend.
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox scheduled a news conference Friday morning to announce the results. Kilpatrick's legal team was not optimistic, predicting that some kind of charge was a "done deal."
"If they want to bring the charges, let's go. It's the only way to get it resolved," defense attorney Jim Parkman said.
Separately, the mayor and a former top aide are charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice, all tied to their testimony in a civil trial last year. At the heart of the case: steamy text messages contradicting their claim that they didn't have a romantic relationship.
Kilpatrick had paid $7,500 — 10 percent of his bond in the perjury case — to remain free while that case moves through court, along with other conditions, including notifying the court about leaving the state on city business.
He acknowledged violating that term when he visited Windsor, Ontario — minutes away from Detroit — on July 23 to discuss the sale of the city's portion of a tunnel connecting the U.S. and Canada. He didn't call prosecutors or the court.
"I'm asking for another chance," the mayor pleaded Thursday to District Judge Ronald Giles.
The judge's response was swift and surprising: Jail for the leader of the country's 11th-largest city.
"I don't claim to have a good understanding of what your responsibilities are. ... But I have to look at how the (court) system is run and perceived by the public," Giles told Kilpatrick.
Circuit Judge Thomas E. Jackson said he would hear an appeal of the order Friday morning.
Defense attorney Jim Thomas called Giles' ruling "extreme." Parkman said they would propose an electronic tether or some other conditions to get Kilpatrick out of jail.
The mayor was transported to jail in a sheriff's van, photographed, given a green jumpsuit and placed in a one-man cell for high-profile people.
Although not in the general jail population, Kilpatrick was being treated like any other prisoner — "no better, no worse," Sheriff Warren Evans said.
Earlier Thursday, Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty waived their right to a preliminary exam in the perjury case. That means those charges now go directly to Wayne County Circuit Court. Arraignment was set for Aug. 14. Both deny the charges.
Deputy Mayor Kandia Milton is running the city while Kilpatrick is in jail.
"Detroit's government will continue to operate as usual. ... Trash will continue to be collected, recreation centers will remain open, grass will be cut and fires will be extinguished," a statement from the mayor's office said.
Kilpatrick has resisted calls for his resignation or a plea bargain as his legal woes pile up.
City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. would succeed Kilpatrick if the mayor resigns or is forced from office.
In May, the Detroit City Council asked Gov. Jennifer Granholm to invoke a little-used state law and remove Kilpatrick from office for misconduct. A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 3.
He had it coming, but the got him on some bullsh!t and they gone try to keep him until his term is over and Detroit can't be mad because if channels 2,4,and 7 wouldn't have blew it up at 6am 7am 8am 12pm 4pm 5pm 6pm and 2am on Fox it wouldn't have even been that big so blame the media for all the attention giving Detroit an extra bad look.
Oh don't bend over Kwame;)
~Kisses~
All this for some side action? seems 2 me that they had nothing else 2 get him on so they resorting to any means possible. We got senators still in office after offering blowwjobs to random strangers in highway bathrooms and all types of corruption. Politically motivated, obstruction of justice, purjury, come on! Then again, I'm not from Detroit.
@DanteEpic
What does that say about Detroit? I'm from Detroit and what this mayor did has nothing to do with the city dumb ass. This mayor thinks he is above the law. That he can't be touch. Just like every other person with power.
@OhioJesus
Before you can talk about Detroit, go back to school and learn how to spell it!
I'm from Detroit, but I moved to Northern VA... I'm glad I'm gone, but at the same time... Dont be so quick to down Detroit, yes it has its problems as a city.. BUT IT AINT THE ONLY CITY WITH A BAD MAYOR.. I CAME OUT HERE TO VA, AND OHHH YES.. MR. WASHINGTON DC MAYOR WANNA BE DIPPIN AND DAPPIN IN THAT CRACK COCAINE..!!!! AND DIDNT HE GET A SECOND TERM???? YEA WAY TO GO DC... MY POINT IS, THERE ARE ALOT OF BAD POLITIANS OUT THERE, AND WHEN YOU VOTE, YOU ARE RUNNING A RISK OF PUTTING THEM IN OFFICE.... BUSH GOT ALL THESE FOLKS BEAT, BUT MAYORS AND GOVERNORS ARE JUST AS BAD TOO.. NOT ALL OF THEM BUT SOME!!!!!! JUST AN OPINION....
There are different rules for Blacks in power. A majority of politicians (white) do what he is doing/has done and it's ignored or they get a slap on the wrist. I think the people of Detroit are tired of always being cast in a bad light. I also think that they feel that their mayor has embarrased and betrayed them after the wholeheatedly supported him.
MAYOR KK IS A TOTAL WASTE. I DO BELEVE HE DID HAVE THE STRIPPER KILLED 2 MONTHS AFTER SHE PARTIED W/THE MAYOR & FRIENDS WHEN HE FIRST WENT IN TO OFFICE. I WAS BORN & RAISED IN DETROIT, WITH ALL MY BEING HAVE THERE EVER BEEN A MAYOR LIKE THIS ON. MAYOR YOUNG WOULD TURN OVER IN HIS GRAVE, MAYOR YOUNG WASN'T THE MOST HONEST MAN, BUT HE MADE SURE DETROIT WAS GIVEN EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME PROSPEROUS, AND IT WAS SOME 18 OR SO YEARS AGO. KK IS LITERALLY DRAGGING US IN THE GUTTER. WHAT A SHAME
@ Shes_got_the_1ook Flag post Ya'll new dang on well he was going to jail, man is crazy, see how black people wit power act. ----------- NO THAT IS NOT HOW BLACKS ACT WITH POWER. U SOUND LIKE SOME DAMN HOUSE [EXPLETIVE]. THATS HOW DUMB ASSES ACT RATHER THEY BLACK, WHITE, ASIAN, LATINO, WHATEVER. NOT JUST BLACK.
@ PlayaRushous - I AGREE 100% I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN DETROIT AND MOVED IN 2000.
OBAMA 08
I've lived in Detroit all my life and I have no complaints. Yes, we have our problems, but from what I see on the news, other cities are having problems, too. KWAME F*CKED UP! Not me or anybody else. He just so happens to be mayor of Detroit, a city that the rest of world loves to hate on. MOST POLITICIANS A CROOKED! It's sad but true. I totally agree with SweetestSin33 and PlayaRushous. I had faith in Kwame and still feel he made some good improvements to the city, but he had made some horrible personal choices. He deserves what he gets because he was wrong and thought he could get away with it. He's not the first mayor to mess up and he won't be the last. So people don't come on here doggin' Detroit. The mayor of your city is probably up to no good, too. We just don't know about it....yet!
@ lovenetta
CAN I SEE THE REST OF THAT TATTOO SURFACE????:)
Yea one thing I can say by being from the "D" is that I've been to a lot of cities and almost every state and the people say two things about Detroit. They either scared of you when u say you're from Detroit or they love yo ass. I mean the first thing out their mouths are "you [EXPLETIVE] know yall can dress or love to match and wear gators" or " yall [EXPLETIVE] crazy in Detroit". hahaha Overall the ladies love you when you say u from the "D" especially if you represented correctly and not just some knuckle head.
@ whatwhatwhat -
yea it's ashame but I think him and his wife had something to do with both of those girls that ended up dead. One in Detroit and the other in Cali. They supposely sent her out there and she called herself playing them by acting like she wasn't talking and she took the money and moved but was also talking to that cop that supposely got fired trying to build a case then ended up dead. Thats what my ppl back at home is saying about the girl in Cali.
@ dieselpro
I agree with you. Thats what I was saying the other day and ppl were acting like I was trying to play the race card. I mean being black like Nas said whenever to speak on the injustice or lopsided decisions toward black vs. white they will call it reverse racism. Yes KK did wrong we all know that, but he's not the first. Like you said the NY guy got caught on wire tap and all he got was a hand shake and a good bye from office. He used the states money for trips, hotels, girls and also used state security to escort him to D.C. and stand out by Hotels. But see we hate ourselves so much that we allow self-hate overcome the unequal justice that we as blacks get every damn day. Just like when they put crack on the streets they made laws that if u caught with crack or selling as much as a rock u going to jail getting shiit like 10years and shiit but if you murder someone or hit and run and it kills them u can get like a year or so in jail. Face it certain laws was made up just for us. Like in the work place. So u can't yell racism about why they fired you they will take away a whole department or small area that u work in just to fire you in Corporate world. Same thing in the Law books. They will sacrifice throwing their own in jail just to get a bunch of us in there. We make up 13% of the population yet 40% of us black men are in jail. Some for voilent crimes and some just for having a small bag of weed in there pocket or fit the description and had a court appointed attorney.
Kwame didn't kill nobody! I don't care who he was screwing-- two consenting adults-- that's for his wife to deal with. Worse has been done, and too big a deal is being made of this. Some of those same bureaucratic fingers pointing at Kwame have done the same or worse. At worst, let him pay for the text messages and drop this BS!
All this idiot had to do was tell someone he was going to Windsor (probably to sell the Windsor tunnel and get her share of the deal). He is so fcking smug....Lies create more lies. All he had to do was admit there was was a party at the Manoogian mansion from the get go. All he had to do was give those police officers there jobs back. (text scandal would not have come out). This fool has 17 lawyers paid by the city and has cost the city if Detroit millions. Not to be direspect to any other posters, but I can't understand his supporters. It's more than just him cheating on his wife and a text scandal. He is costing this city millions. Him and everyone of those idiots on the city council needs to step down and we as Detroiters needs to stop voting on name recognition. KK thinks he has a divine right to be in office. He is a classic sociopath. I know people that work for him and power has obviously corrupted him.
