there is nothing like having a good relaxer... i went natural for a while but i missed having my hair look like i flat iron it everyday. i hate when ppl go natural and think they don't have to style their hair...it's not true. go to the hairdresser. there r plenty of them so we don't have to look like ciely just b/c we're natural.

Side note: Has anyone noticed that the majority of black woman (african, caribbean, latino, etc) that process their hair are absent from the gyms? "oh, I can't workout, i'm just going to sit here and gain 300 lbs because i don't wanna ruin my fresh perm". Everytime I go to the gym, I only see natural women there. Why? Because we don't have to worry about sweating out a perm, having our hair smell like lye when we're on the treadmill, or worry about what the rain will do to our hair.
I think it's so sad that we are the only group of people that feels some sort of insecurity about wearing our hair natural; that we have to constantly worry about that chemical crack every 6 weeks.
You want your hair to look like it was just flat-ironed? Did it ever occur to you that our hair wasn't meant to look like that?

i get so tired of people saying 'oh, more ladies should go natural' when the truth is a lot of brothers are not checking for ladies with natural hair unless it is NATURALLY STRAIGHT and DOWN HER BACK and ladies, you know, know, know how difficult it is to rock natural hairstyles with global warming in full effect so why can't you just appreciate that sisters can look nice with what works for them albeit braids, weaves or extensions. NewsAlert: Sisters were adding ox hair and feathers to elongate and beautify their hair's appearance long before western civilization ideas of beauty were forced us.

Taking the time to be good to your hair and scalp make sense, both for the short and long term...
And seeomega I have to disagree....Personally when I see a sista walk down the street with locks, a fro or other natural styles it commands my attention...I love it.

I understand that not every female does not have naturally straight hair. But I'm telling you from experience, you'd be surprised what you can do with natural hair. I was very hesitant about growing out my perm, and I was 18 when I decided to stop. But over the years, I would get my hair done every 2 weeks like normal, and have my hair trained and get it used to being natural. Now that Im 28, I have learned to do so much with my hair. Trust me, my hair is no where near being naturally straight. But with the help of Ceramic flat irons, it's possible. Trust me, and I'm talking to all of the females on this site, you can do so much more when your hair is natural, and it saves you a ton of money. Believe me!

Oh please! A perm does not automatically mean your hair is done either. That mess cracks me up when chicks with half eaten out permed hair think their hair is done...you know what I'm talking about. All curled up in the back when you can see throught the 'long' hair cuz it is so damaged and the chick doesn't want to just cut that mess off...or how about tracks showing in a weave..or how about extra eat out edges from too much fake ponytails. Glad I am not down with that anymore. Nothing better than to go swimming WITH NO FEAR.

Now you know you lying. Sisters were adding ADORNMENTS to they head NOT CHANGING THE WHOLE STRUCTURE OF IT WITH POISON TO LOOK LIKE ANOTHER RACE OF WOMEN! Your reasons for doing it now may have changed?? but the original hot comb was invented so that Black women could fit in with their white counterparts who did not like their hair. Look it up. I'd rather see sistas natural and I often speak about it but...Bytches love accusing BW of being fake with their hair when alot of these bytches, White Latin and whatever else do shyt to their own hair, skin bodies or whatever...just fake period...Black women aren't the only women who use perms or other chemicals in their hair or aren't even the only ones who straighten their hair...and surely we're not the only ones who wear the weaves/extentions though we tend to get more carried away with it...
Now with that being said, I like Venus hair but since she's an athlete, she needs to use alot of moisturizing or natural oil products on it so it won't appear to be so dry...
@jaydbee, you're right...You can do so much with natural hair...I don't get relaxers anymore and in the process of growing it out, I had to cut alot of my hair off to get rid of my relaxed ends...But it's still in the transitional stages...Most of it actually has grown back because my hair grows really fast, with or without a relaxer...So it's long again...but of course I'll have to cut the rest of the relaxed ends...
And to whoever said brothers aren't checking for sistas with natural hair, yes they are...If you're attractive with a relaxer, you'd be even more attractive without one...And you don't have to get dreads, there are soooo many other natural styles you can do with your hair...And you can also wear it straight without having to worry about much heat damage because of chemicals from relaxers...The CHI flat irons are the best...
I agree Lexia! I don't get why sisters say stuff like that when there are soooo many men who say they love natural hair. Everytime this comes up on this site you have quite a few brothers who say they love it..just read above??
But one thing I must say ..even though BW get accused of being fake when whites latinas etc. do the saaame thing the big difference is that those whites/latinas can choose to never put a piece or chemical in they hair and no one would tell them they are ugly, militant, manly etc. for it.

There is nothing wrong with natural hair. I mean it's a blessin' to have black hair because the texture of it allows us to create many different styles. Black men and women could not wear the hairstyles if their hair was completely straight. We need to stop looking at everyone else and be thankful for what we got, seriously!!!

I was going to address the post on adding adornments to black hair and denaturing the protein structures that give our hair its kink. Those are two different things.

Natural hair IS NOT hard to style. That's a common misconception. It's even easier than styling permed hair, no matter what the weather is like. And you get to learn how to care for your hair in its natural state. It's cheaper on your pockets, too. Also, I don't know about any of you, but I get approached by brothers and non-brothers (because, like I always say, i'm always down for interracial/inter-ethnic relationships) on a regular basis and I'm a nappy.

I don't see anything wrong with a natural, relaxer, or a weave, because everyone is entitled to their own preference. I wear mines relaxed because, it is so thick and kinky, that it is hard to maintain. I do notice that when my hair is in braids and I DO NOT relax it, my hair grows faster and thicker. So, I cut back on relaxing it.
@Jucija1, honey it isn't going to be an easy transition...It's all a test...Life itself can be a test...but thing is, you have to hang in and pass to get through it...So you can do it but your heart really has to be in it and you definitely have to keep your hair moisturized in the process...
@soseductive23, Yeah I had that same crazy train of thought...I grew up with very long and super thick hair...I used to get it pressed to make it more manageable...But I messed around and let the woman who was pressing my hair talk my mother into giving me a relaxer because my hair was just too big of a job, too thick, and too long...One of the worst mistakes of my life...I ended up having to cut all of my hair off and start from scratch...My grandmother, who is Indian, was so upset...My hair grew back so fast though...I guess it was apart of my African and Indian heritage blended in to increase the growth rate...
And eventhough I've gotten relaxers since, my hair was never the same as it once was...And I know chemicals in your hair/scalp is never a good thing...So I decided to go back natural...Better now than later because as you get older, your hair growth will slow down...and having the chemicals will make it even worse...

So your saying that there is something wrong with the way God made her & every other black person with kinky hair. If God wanted us to have straight hair he would have given it to us. You're just another one of those people who have been brainwashed into thinking the closer you are to white(in hair type or skin color)the more beautiful your are. I love my kinky hair no matter what anyone says & it is good hair because it was made by GOD!!!!! Perms are not good for your hair!!! I just went into a Sally's Beauty Supply & saw a sign saying that Motions perms were on recall for causing hair breakage!!!! Perms were invented for black people who wanted to look more white!!!!
