: BEIJING (AP) Usain Bolt of Jamaica easily broke his own world record in the 100 meters to win the Olympic gold medal Saturday night, slowing up to celebrate and still finishing in 9.69 seconds.
Bolt stretched his arms out wide and put his palms out, then slapped his chest just before crossing the line. He came in well below his old mark of 9.72 seconds, set May 31 in New York - less than a year after Bolt took up the dash.
What had been billed as a showdown was not close at all. Richard Thompson of Trinidad took the silver medal in 9.89, and Walter Dix of the United States was third in 9.91.
The 21-year-old Bolt's performance left no doubt whatsoever about who deserves the title of "World's Fastest Man."
Former world record-holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica was fifth, while reigning world champion Tyson Gay of the United States failed to qualify for the final.
Bolt's specialty has been the 200 meters, which he will be a heavy favorite to win next week in what would be first men's Olympic sprint double since Carl Lewis in 1988. But he persuaded his coach to let him try the dash - and what quick progress Bolt has made.
Who the hell is Michael Bolt? Its Usain Bolt MTO...lol...
Man that brotha is a bad man...In the preliminary races he was beating everyone and jogging the last few meters...Like he was toying with them..
Its just a shame Tyson Gay got hurt so close to the Olympics because you could tell he still wasnt a 100%.
wahhhhh d raaaaaaaas MTO!! As a Jamaican I'm HIGHLY upset thatu cud misplace Usain's name as Michael! It Michael frater d guy day come 6th! Usain Bolt cam 1st, we d record holder. Did yall c the female race for 100m? Clean sweep! Yow Jamaica to d fuccccckin RERL!!!
Fraser, Stewart and Simpson, Jamaica love unuh gone to bed, yey a dat mi say!!!
EXTREMELY PROUD JAMAICAN RITE ABOUT NOW, JAH KNOW!!
MTO...You're losing point sfor being so UNPROFESSIONAL and just another low class gossip site.
MTO, why don't you hire PROOF READERS or at least someone who what some intelligence and know how to read and tell the difference between Michal Bolt and Usain Bolt.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND TACKY ....MTO
<> USAIN <> USAIN <> USAIN <> USAIN <> USAIN <>
IS THE MAN'S NAME !!!!!!!!!!
My people, please take it easy on the award winning MTO. I'm sure its a honest mistake on their part. They obviously wanted to do an article on Micheal Bolton (the singer) and not Usian Bolt (the world greatest athlete). I don't see how omeone in Journalism could mistake Usain for Micheal. MTO, continue doing what you are doing but please, before you publish an article (especially about jamaicans) please send me a copy so I can proof read it. You don't want embarass your company's and black journalism in general. You have my emailand for future reference the first three letters of his name is USA> your country
MTO YOU ALL ARE A POOR EXCUSE...MICHAEL BOLT? AND NOT ONLY THAT, YOU LAZY PHUCKS COULD'VE HAD THE DECENCY TO PUT UP A RECENT PIC OF HIM...YA KNOW, LIKE THE ONES FROM LAST NIGHT!
PUTTING THIS OLD ASS PIC UP HERE AND THEN CALLING HIM SOMEONE ELSE IN YOUR HEADLINE...
Anyway, Congrats to Usain and Walter Dix from the US...I saw the race last night...
BIG UP ALL AH MI YAADIE DEM!! No American is touching a caribbean or african person in track and field. Just face it...JAMAICA TUH DI WERLL...Congrats to my baby Usain, and Asafa you'll get up there in 2012 in London. Olympics 2012 nah miss mi...
And furthermore, Usain isn't cocky...nobody's just on his level right now. I mean whoever saw the race clearly saw thas he could've done it in 9.50 or less, but he slowed down drastically at the end. Nobody's touching him, and the kid's only 21. Big Up Babes
American sprinters have been flexing their muscles (showboating) all these years and nothing was said of that. However, why the envy when Usain and the Trini brother "showboat". Usain couldn't have represented Jamaica any better than how the whole thing unfolded. In 9.69 seconds, he shows the world that we as a nation are proud people, wi not tek nuh hostage, wi can accomplish anything wi set out to do,wi dare yuh fi come test and when wi "showboat" wi do it differently. Now winning the world record is not enough, you have to have a dance to show the world. Ali certainly did and that's why he is the athlete of the century
Yea congrats on winning and all, but I find to be REALLY INTERESTING is reading all of these comments from these PROUD JAMAICANS, but the MAJORITY OF YOU ALL EITHER LIVE HERE IN AMERICA, CANADA, or BRITAIN! If you all are so JAH PROUD of your boy and country, why do you all migrate here and other countries? I'm saying you can be proud of your boy and all, but it's coming off VERY ANTI-AMERICAN with how you're expressing yourselves....
@JAMICAN_MAMI...slow down baby...I am always proud when we ALL accomplish things. But I also know the history of track and field so that's why I said what what I said. Why do you Island folk always try to like you're better than african-AMERICANS. Please break the chains of psychological slavery. I know celebrations and that #1 spot isn't something you're use to but act like you been there. SMH!
LOL @ JaeCe
I'm with you on your entire comment! Especially, the "Why do you Island folk always try to like you're better than african-AMERICANS. Please break the chains of psychological slavery. I know celebrations and that #1 spot isn't something you're use to but act like you been there. " Part!!! Please educate them..:)
Ms. Bajan-islandjewel, you are claim your people "are better" than African-Americans? Because your people "Don't have you'll (if that's even a word) drama"..Please explain this self-proclaimed fact to me. Your answer clearly shows the HATE that many West Indians have for African-Americans..I don't even think it's hate actually, I think it's JEALOUSY. TYhe bottom line is WE ARE ALL FROM AFRICA, BUT OUR ANCESTORS GOT DROPPED OFF AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD.
Raweed.I Like the way you stand up for your country. Anyway take back your money and put it on Veronica Campbell. Its one thing to have pride in your country but be smart and not waste your money. I also live in the US and know things are tough right now. Bro fck nationalism and put some money in your pocket. Veronica Campbell all di way

Dedication and practice gets you a great reward.
I know the feeling Williams and Lee, now you know you got to really bring it.
Because I am a JA-Merican I was routing for all 5 you girls all did great.
CONGRATS to all my fellow countrymen and brethren. I am glad to see Jamaicans get our due! For a little island, we have made our mark in music (bob marley), politics (marcus garvey, colin powell)and now sports! Woo Hoo!
Name another island as small that has soooooo many world renowned people who have made a difference world-wide. Give it up for Jamaicans!
"England's Daily Mail newspaper recently asked Ben Johnson, the Canadian sprinter stripped of his 1988 gold medal for steroid use, if he thought today's sprinters were still doping.
“How shall we put it to avoid being sued by everybody?” Johnson said. “OK, virtually all the big names, the winners, the stars all the fans come out to see . . . they're on drugs. Nothing has changed as a result of all the controversies, because without steroids it's not humanly possible to keep producing the performances.”
Victor Conte, the mastermind behind the BALCO doping empire, thinks he can put a number on it.
“9.94 seconds, maybe 9.92,” he says. “You'd have to have the perfect conditions, a tailwind, great mechanics. . . . I would say anything in the 9.8s is suspicious and anything in the 9.7s is highly suspicious.”
Seven men in history have run under 9.8 seconds in the 100 meters. Three ? Johnson, Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin ? have been caught doping and served competition bans. A fourth, Maurice Greene, was fingered this year by a Texas steroids dealer who offered a $10,000 wire-transfer receipt as proof.
The other three are at these Olympics: American Tyson Gay, and Jamaica's Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt. Bolt holds the world record of 9.72. Powell has gone 9.74, Gay 9.77.
Something has to be done about this cheating...can something even be done? should they just left eveyone dope and let the best doper win? Whats the point of competetition in that case? "
SOME OF THESE COMMENTS ARE HILARIOUS LOL! anyways yes I'm Jamaican and I do live here in the U.S.A like many other nationalities that migrate, of course we are going to be proud of our very OWN at the end of the day no matter where in the world we live we have a HOME LAND to go back to if and when needs be......... people need to stop generalizing and do more reading, traveling and such..........moving right along!
