: DENVER – (AP) Surrounded by an enormous, adoring crowd, Barack Obama promised a clean break from the "broken politics in Washington and the failed policies of George W. Bush" Thursday night as he embarked on the final lap of his audacious bid to become the nation's first black president.
"America, now is not the time for small plans," the 47-year-old Democratic Illinois senator told an estimated 84,000 people packed into Invesco Field, a huge football stadium at the base of the Rocky Mountains.
He vowed to cut taxes for nearly all working-class families, end the war in Iraq and break America's dependence on Mideast oil within a decade. By contrast, he said, "John McCain has voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time," a scathing indictment of his Republican rival — on health care, education, the economy and more.
Polls indicate a close race between Obama and McCain, the Arizona senator who stands between him and a place in history. On a night 45 years after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a Dream Speech," Obama made no overt mention of his own race.
"I realize that I am not the likeliest candidate for this office. I don't fit the typical pedigree" of a presidential candidate was as close as he came to the long-smoldering issue that may well determine the outcome of the election.
Fireworks lit the night sky as Obama, his speech concluded, accepted the cheers of supporters. His wife, Michelle, and their daughters Malia and Sasha joined him as the country music anthem "Only in America" filled the stadium. Vice presidential running mate Joseph Biden and his wife, Jill, joined them onstage.
Depicted by McCain as too young and inexperienced to sit in the Oval Office, Obama responded with an oblique reference to his rival's temper.
"If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgment, to serve as the next commander in chief, that's a debate I'm ready to have," he said.
Campaigning as an advocate of a new kind of politics, he suggested at least some common ground was possible on abortion, gun control, immigration and gay marriage.
Obama delivered his 44-minute nomination acceptance speech in an unrivaled convention setting, before a crowd of unrivaled size — the filled stadium, the camera flashes in the night, the made-for-television backdrop that suggested the White House, and the thousands of convention delegates seated around the podium in an enormous semicircle.
Obama and his fellow senator, Biden of Delaware, leave their convention city on Friday for Pennsylvania, first stop on an eight-week sprint to Election Day.
McCain countered the stadium extravaganza with a bold move of his own, hoping to steal some of the political spotlight by spreading word that he had settled on a vice presidential running mate. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman were in the running.
Rep. John Lewis of Georgia spoke from the convention stage of the anniversary of King's memorable speech.
"Tonight we are gathered here in this magnificent stadium in Denver because we still have a dream," said the Georgia lawmaker, who marched with King, supported Obama's primary rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, then switched under pressure from younger black leaders in his home state and elsewhere.
Obama's aides were interested in a different historical parallel from King — Obama was the first to deliver an outdoor convention acceptance speech since John F. Kennedy did so at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960.
In his speech, Obama pledged to jettison Bush's economic policy — and replace it with his own designed to help hard-pressed families.
"I will cut taxes for 95 percent of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle class," he said.
The speech didn't mention it, but Obama has called for raising taxes on upper-income Americans to help pay for expanded health care and other domestic programs.
He did not say precisely what he meant by breaking the country's dependence on Mideast oil, only that Washington has been talking about doing it for 30 years "and John McCain has been there for 26 of them."
Criticized by the GOP for his thin foreign policy portfolio, Obama said he welcomed a national security debate with McCain.
"We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country," Obama said. "I will never hesitate to defend this nation."
He said McCain had no standing on foreign policy, not after backing the Iraq war from the start and rejecting timetables for withdrawal now accepted by Bush. "John McCain stands alone in his stubborn refusal to end a misguided war," he said.
Obama's pledge to end the war in Iraq responsibly was straight from his daily campaign speeches.
"I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," he added.
As he does so often while campaigning, Obama also paid tribute to McCain's heroism — the 72-year-old Arizona senator was a prisoner of war in Vietnam — then assailed him.
"Sen. McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time?
Former Vice President Al Gore picked up on the same theme. "If you like the Bush-Cheney approach, John McCain's your man. If you want change, then vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden," he declared.
The much-discussed stage built for the program was evocative of the West Wing at the White House, with 24 American flags serving as a backdrop. A blue carpeted runway jutted out toward the infield, and convention delegates ringed the podium. Thousands more sat in stands around the rim of the field.
The wrap-up to the party convention blended old-fashioned speechmaking, Hollywood-quality stagecraft and innovative, Internet age politics.
The list of entertainers ran to Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder and will.i.am, whose Web video built around Obama's "Yes, we can" rallying cry quickly went viral during last winter's primaries.
In a novel bid to extend the convention's reach, Obama's campaign decided to turn tens of thousands of partisans in the stands into instant political organizers.
They were encouraged to use their cell phones to send text messages to friends as well as to call thousands of unregistered voters from lists developed by the campaign.
In all, Obama's high command said it had identified 55 million unregistered voters across the country, about 8.1 million of them black, about 8 million Hispanic and 7.5 million between the ages of 18 and 24.
Those are key target groups for Obama as he bids to break into the all-white line of U.S. presidents and at the same time restore Democrats to the White House for the first time in eight years.
The Democratic man of the hour paid a brief visit to members of his home-state Illinois delegation before the curtain went up on his show. "I came by (because) I had this speech tonight. I wanted to practice it out on you guys. See if it worked on a friendly audience," he joked.
There was no joking about the stakes in the speech, a once-in-a-campaign opportunity to speak to millions of voters who have yet to make up their minds between McCain and him. The polls show a close race nationally, with more than enough battleground states tight enough to tip the election either way.
Obama's hopes of victory rely on holding onto the large Democratic base states such as California, New York, Michigan and his own Illinois, while eating into territory that voted for George W. Bush. Ohio tops that list, and Democrats have also targeted Montana, North Dakota, Virginia and New Mexico, among others, as they try to expand their Electoral College map.
McCain was in Ohio as Obama spoke, and after a series of sharply negative convention week television commercials, his campaign aired a one-night advertisement that complimented Obama and noted the speech occurred on the anniversary of King's famous address.
"Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, 'Congratulations,'" McCain says in the ad.
"How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done."

Did any of you watch the Republican Response on Larry King after the speech? They were floored .... dumbfounded is probably a better word. It was evident in their expressions and their candor; their lack of ability to launch the usual assault when given real ammunition left them in a very uncomfortable place. The GOP likes to strike first, but this uppercut was one they didn't see coming.
Obama gave them nothing but the truth last ***. Painful truth. The Republican Party and George Bush has failed this country miserably. From an ill-advised war to ***-sighted inattention to our country's damaged economy, from the grossly negligent partisan lobbying of big oil interests to the drowning of New Orleans, this party has shown it's ineffectiveness in countless ways over the past eight years.
Please go out and vote. It is all fun and games when we come to this website; however, please remind yourselves that the time we all spend here posting our views on gossip and the hot topics of the day (LOL), we can get our butts down to the voting booth and make a way for change.
It may not all come in four years or eight, but it will come. I thank God for Mr. Obama. I believe that he is truly the right one, at the right time. He is ready to lead.

IN NOVEMBER, THE YOUTH WILL SURFACE, AND THE WORLD WILL SEE AND EXPLOSION OF VOTERS THAT THEY NEVER KNEW EXISTED. OBAMA IS SMART, INTELLIGENT, SHARP, AND TRULY HAVE THE PEOPLE INTEREST AT HEART.

We have to make sure that we all get out and vote and take those who need help getting to the voting booths as well. Last *** was a historic moment and I cried because I have seen the day when we a legitimate black candidate!
I have to say, i'm usually in church when i'm moved to tears, but with the absolute horrors we've faced these last 8 years, I actually felt some hope-actually I've been feeling that way since the man stepped on the presidential scene. And before the idiots come out(glad they're sleeping in,I doubt they have jobs anyway)I didn't just see a Black man, I saw a leader, hope for the future, and a role model for other other kids in this country who weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths. That's what's so inspirational about Barack and Michelle, these weren't rich people barely middle class and look how far they made it. I must say that I am so very proud that they are proud Black people.
I'm now pretty excited to see the Republican convention-very interested to see what they pull out of there *** to keep me unimpressed.
I know as a middle class single mom, I'm hoping SOMEBODY can help a sister out with these taxes. I don't mind my tax dollars going to help people who need it, but I remember when I first put my son in daycare, I tried to get a little help from Chastity, they told me with my income I would have to have FOUR MORE KIDS to qualify for assistance. That's when I'm like Ok how bout you take your "assistance" and shove it up your hole.
He laid out some excellent plans. Today no one should be saying "but we still don't know him." Like his policies or not, at least he laid it all out last ***! He and Michelle are the bomb.

Last *** was by far the best speech that have ever heard. Not just because it was Obama, but because there were so many points that needed to be touched upon, and he did just that. He's not the typical politician who tries to carry out all of the political traditions, nor is he the typical politician who says what he THINKS we want to hear. He thinks outside that political box and speaks about the real issues of this country and what we have been dealing with for years. Plus, he has such a passion for those in the middle class and "lower". Obama is certainly what this country needs. And I swear, if McCain wins, I'm raising HELL!!! lol

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone! This was definitely HISTORY in the making! I love the OBAMA FAMILY (all 4 of them...lol)! And I love how he touched on subjects that no one would dare to touch (ie, abortion, *** marraige) and was clear that while there may be differences, he is OPEN MINDED ENOUGH to come to a happy medium with anyone and for THAT, I LOVED HIM EVEN MORE!! God I am so proud to be black!! All those people who fought and died just for him to be on that stage last *** didn't die in vain. it puts chills on your arms to see how far "we" have come. I am too proud of Obama and too proud of America for waking up and coming this far!!! We've come this far by faith!!
Last *** was truly historical. I watched it with my grandmother (91), great uncle (73) and mom (56) and cried with them because they said they never thought they would see this day come. The way my grandmothers eyes lit up with pride when he took that stage last ***...I get chills thinking about it right now! She just kept saying, "Babygurl, it's a new day....um hum....a new day indeed". "Now Nana gotta go to bed!" LOL...she's was up HELLA late...her usual bedtime is like 4PM!!!
When this all started, I remember saying he will NEVER be nominated; not because I thought he wasn't capable...I just thought America would never be ready. After last ***, I believe him when he says... YES WE CAN!

Obama did an excellent, fantabulous job last ***. He killed it and left no doubt that he IS the next President of the USA. The most profound part of the speech for me was when he said that we can debate and disagree without disrespecting each other and attacking their character. The republicans are still on that "business as usual" with the attack ads and smears of Obama. He has overcome everything they have thrown at him. The are so mad that they can't find any dirt on him. They are amazed that he is a good, strong, intelligent, and surviving Black man with no criminal history, no baby mammas, jump offs, or bust it babies (but with a woman like Michelle, why would he stray?) I understand what your saying and agree with you as far as self reliance being a key to success goes.I vote regularly but I don't place all my hopes and dreams in the hands of politicians. TRUE...ALL PRESIDENTS ANSWER TO A HIGHER HIDDEN AUTHORITY. That being said, I personally look at Sen. Obama, as well as his WIFE ,as a counter balance to the negative images of Black people shown in the media. This dynamic couple can have a positive impact on Black youth. They present a great looking and REAL family unit and they've both used education as a foundation for their success in life. If Black youth and even adults can use them as inspirations in their lives,then his position as the leader of the U.S. will be beneficial. Symbolic yes but beneficial none-the-less.

CNN confirms this morning that John McCain has selected Alaska GOP Governor Sarah Palin to be his VP pick. According to many who know her she has a “dynamic personality” and came into office in 2006 with a pledge to reform Alaska’s notoriously corrupt government.
As a woman candidate she will undoubtedly draw much attention, as this is only the second time in history that a major party has selected a female VP candidate. She was also a runner-up to Miss Alaska in 1984; she is definitely an attractive woman.
The question, however, is why Sarah?
Think about the VP’s job. It’s to step into office on a moment’s notice in case the President pulls a William Henry Harrison and days a month after taking office. This is always a real possibility, but with McCain’s advanced age and prior health issues, the succession issue is even more important this year. It was especially *** upon McCain to pick somebody who would be ready to serve in a moment’s notice.
Is that Sarah Palin? She was elected Governor 18 months ago. Before that, she was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. She is 43 years old and has served a fraction of even Barack Obama’s time in non-local political office. Despite her longtime support for ethics reform, she is under state investigation right now for abuse of power in the dismissal of the Commissioner of Public Safety.
The centerpiece to John McCain’s argument against Barack Obama is that he is too inexperienced to lead right now. That he is unprepared for the Presidency of the United States. Agree or disagree, that’s McCain argument.
This VP completely undercuts that argument. If McCain is unable to serve in his first term, a woman with 18 months of experience beyond the Mayoral level (and this ain’t NYC) will have to step in and serve as leader of the free world. She has virtually no public profile outside the state of Alaska and carries no major message or agenda that makes up for her lack of experience. She is attractive, athletic and has condemned the notoriously corrupt Alaska GOP. And she is a social conservative who opposes abortion rights and so is acceptable to the Christian right (meaning her appeal to pro-choice women is limited).
But is that why she should be the VP? I get the strange feeling that John McCain watched Obama’s performance last *** and decided he needed to *** the moon in order to have a chance. He knew that a standard-issue pick like Pawlenty or Romney would not do it. Some will see this as a bold pick. It is.
But it’s also an act of desperation. McCain panicked, and once the novelty wears off, he and Palin will have some tough questions to answer regarding her appropriateness (experience, judgment, vision, etc.) to serve in the highest office in the world on a moment’s notice.

That is such an important statistic!!! When you compare the population of Alaska with the population of Illinois the differences are glaring.
But how about one better? Look at the responsibility level.... he deals with the responsibility of improving the lives of over 12,000,000 people. And the Alaskan governor? Not so much.... not even half. And she has never been re-elected!!! So we don't know what her political legacy would have been. She is already under investigation for ethics violations. (Misusing her powers as governor to have someone wrongfully fired.)
If elected, John McCain will be 77 at the end of his first term. There is a serious possibility that he may not make it to 2012. God bless him, I wish him the best out of life, but that is the reality. So his solution to this blindingly obvious fact is to nominate someone with less than 20 months in office. She doesn't hold a law degree and she was the mayor of an extremely small town before running for governor. Before that, she owned a fishing/bait/tackle shop. Obama's speech had me in tears last ***!!! What a great man. I was so impressed by his confidence and poise. When he mentioned that this election "wasn't about him", but about US, the american people, I *** near choked. He blew the republicans up with that one. I was talking to a friend of mine last *** who is about 66 years-old, and he kind of put a different spin on this whole campaign. First he talked about how we Black people are quick to dismiss the fact that Obama is half white, not even publically acknowledging it, like her DNA don't count. We basically play the same game about race that most of society does, that if you have an ounce of a Black person's blood in you, then you are Black period. Society uses this philosophy when the Black person is doing something negative, while we use it when the person is positive, as in the case of Obama. The my friend also talked about who really controls this country, how this country was even founded, by shedding blood and stealing the land, and how White people in real power (economically) are not just going to sit by and give up that power to some brother (half Black or otherwise), without some assurances. He basically called this campaign a smoke screen, that when you think about it, the people who control the real power in this country are the ones who control the real wealth in it. Made me think a littl bit differently about this whle thing.

Polling data suggest that Obama has the Democrats' traditional advantage among women at the moment.
