: ST. PAUL (Reuters) - The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins' statement said.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support," the Palins said.
The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couple's privacy.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.
MCCAIN KNEW
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.
In the short period since she was announced last Friday, Palin has helped to energize the Republican Party's conservative base, giving the McCain camp fresh energy going into the campaign for the November 4 election against Democrat Barack Obama.
McCain officials said the news of the daughter's pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called "mud-slinging and lies" circulating on liberal blog sites.
According to these rumors, Sarah Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in May to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin's child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother.
A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.
"The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama's name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,'" a senior aide said.

Next...the daughter didn't look pregnant on the 29th when McCain announced her. I did notice how she, Bristol had the baby the ENTIRE time but she had no belly. I grew up in a mostly white area all my life and I saw more drug use more teenage pregnancy than in any urban area. The difference is that when "they" get pregnant, mom and dad have enough money to send them "away" for a while to "get better". My mom, single, raised 4 of us alone and all of us are college educated none of us teen mom's none of us on drugs. I'm not saying it's easy being a single mom I am saying that my mom didn't let ANY "JOB" get in the way of raising us. My issue would be if she can't put her kids first, could she even put this country first...She has a 4 month old baby with DS, and underage daughter who is pregnant for supposedly the first time but yet she is thousands miles away and out campaigning with McCain...I'm not even a mother yet but *** if i don't have more maternal instincts than her because I just couldn't bare to be away my 4 month old sick child, which at this point is some of the most critical times a child needs to be around their mother...That is what really bugs me about it...I feel bad for the baby and the teen because I am sure she is scared and nervous and probably has already been looked down upon for being a pregnant teen...well a pregnant White teen because it happens more often than it should in our/Black community...

That being said I am also wondering why a mother would put her child out there to be ripped apart and ridiculed.In addition being a vice president is a busy, time consuming job. I'm also wondering does that 17 year old really even want to get married or is she doing so becuase it'll ease some of the scandal off of Mommy. A pipe line from Canada to Alaska made the choice easier. The McCain strategy is to select a women (any women) to implement a well thought out plan. McCain's secret weapon is (a women ) operation "Tear Drop". To understand this plan, you have to understand the full impact of the plan. McCain doesn't only want HRC's defectors, as so many are suggesting, he also wants Obama loyalist, the undecided and the independents. By choosing a woman, immediately a very small unintelligent group of women will vote for McCain because he chose a women. This is a small group but worth mentioning. On the larger scale women don't vote for women because they are women, and simply putting a woman on the ticket won't compensate for their policy positions. The McCain Campaign is not worried about the larger scale of women who are intelligent and has high expectations concerning the broad issues on the economy, domestic and national security and health care. The McCain strategy is of no respect of a woman's intellect but her emotions. Here is the gamble of the McCain campaign. Not if, but when the McCain campaign provoke the Democrats to attack Mrs. Polin, or when the McCain campaign plant a man in their audience to heckle Mrs. Palin with a gender remark like " Go home and raise your five kids" or when the Obama campaign says anything to Mrs. Palin, the McCain Campaign will continue to cry foul by reason of gender bias. women all over will get upset, take offense and think that the democrats are attacking her because she is a women. I realize mistakes happen and this is what happened with Palin's daughter. However, it appears her parents pulled her out of school due to the pregnancy and not mono. It's one thing to say "she's pregnant and plans to marry the father" but quite another to pull her out of school when she begins to physically show, yet cover it up saying she has mono.
As I've said before, who are raising all those children while their mother seeks an even higher public office? Palin's husband works full time too but a governor puts in long, stressful hours in the office.
Plus, as someone posted, having an infant with Down's Syndrome is not a cake walk plus attending to the welfare of a pregnant teen. SMH... someone's priorities seemed mixed up here. If anything, this news will show the hypocrisy that exists in America. I agree with one poster who said, this news will be used to paint Paplin as a dedicated and understanding mother. Paplin is already being painted as the symbol for modern day feminist. She is a mother (of five, one with Down syndrome,), a wife and a career woman. She is what every feminist wants to aspire to become…a Miss USA, career –driven, mother and wife.

Greetings and blessings to "thetype2wife" for noticing a lot about Bristol, the 17 year old daughter of Sarah Palin, McCain's Vice Presidential pick. Most people are focused on the fact that Sarah Palin put it out in the news just this morning that Bristol is pregnant while not mentioning the rumor that has completely taken over the internet that Bristol is actually the mother of the last baby "of Sarah Palin" named Trig. Google the words "Bristol Palin's SECOND baby" and it will all come up. People are now saying that this story was told just to take the heat off the first story and that, perhaps, Bristol is not pregnant now at all and that she might even mysteriously suffer a "miscarriage" very soon. The earlier bloggers are blaming the baby's 'down syndrome' on everything from incest to the baby's possibly not having down's syndrome at all but that the baby might even be the product of an Inuit Alaskan [they have Asian features] which is explained away to the public as "down's syndrome". Some bloggers are saying that Bristol named the baby Trig because the father of this baby was in her Trigonometry class when she conceived. She IS alleged to have been taken out of her high school FOR FIVE MONTHS during what is speculated as her pregnancy with Trig and which is explained away as "absences due to mononucleosis." But, who knows? And even the ones who say that the child might belong to Sarah Palin, they mention all the anti-"I am in labor" things that Sarah did in her so-called "NINTH" month as showing a complete lack of judgment for a pregnant woman. Anyway, there are tons and tons of material on this story; and,even if none of it is true, it is soooooooo interesting just because of KARMA.

I am a Christian and I certainly agree that having a child out of wedlock is a sin. But I applaud Mrs. Palin for embracing her daughter and helping her through her pregnancy. I don't want to disparage Gov. Palin daughter - she is young and has made a dumb mistake. I made countless mistakes when I was her age. Only my mistakes didn't include getting pregnant, because I COULD receive birth control in school, without parental consent. We also had *** education in school. Both of these things helped REDUCE the need for abortions. Gov. Palin has been a STRONG OPPONNET of each of these measures!!!

My issue with this situation is not the fact that her teenage unwed daughter is pregnant. It happens everyday and it is not just in the US. My problem is that this pregancy shows the double standard that so many whites and Uncle Tom black people have: If a young black girl gets pregnant, we judge and turn our noses up all the while saying that she is the reason why blacks are in a bad state and that she will end up on welfare. In all actuality, I have several women in my family who were unmarried teen mothers and they managed to flourish, take care of their kids with and without welfare and to even finish college. But when a white girl gets pregnant, it's shrugged off as no big deal. It is hypocrisy.

If your stance is to preach about "family values", abstinence is the only form of birth control, single mothers are evil and the reason why this country is in the toilet, then stick to that logic when one of your own gets pregnant. I always thought of Feminism as a good thing because it empowered females. We didn't have to wait on anyone. We got to say what happens with us. How could that be a bad thing? Why is there a downside to a woman working and getting her own? A woman having say-so over issues involving herself? It seems allowing women their freedoms was at the expense of the household. You put her in a high position and all of a sudden two head honchos can't make it work. Somebody has got to go. If feminism was not the answer then a woman being home and non independent is. How could such an outdated philosophy work better than two people willing to take something on? Two leaders will clash. Someone has to be the leader and someone has to be the follower?

I feel two ways about that. Money is dangerous whether you have to much or to little.
If one of you have to much, unless they're a good person, the other person is at they're mercy! If you have to little it causes to much stress. Plus women need to feel secure so if they don't it's a problem.
Women having their own money is good for them, and if she has a weak man that can't handle that she should try and work it out with him or leave if she can't!
Republicans are such hypocrites. This lady rants and raves about family values and she has none of her own. They talk about family/country first and she cant even keep her daughter in line. Im not knocking the girl for having ***, its a normal part of life but there are other issues to consider: teenage pregnancy, birth control, etc. Palin is ultra conservative so if they are elected, one of the first issues on her agenda is to have Roe vs. Wade reversed which takes away a woman's right to choose. Some women choose to get pregnant and have children, some dont. The issue is all about the option. Some woman that never met me and doesnt know about my life and my *** has no right to tell me what I can and cannot do with my body. Its fine for her and her daughter, but its not fine for all other women.

You have to understand though that they judge us all by what one does. Case in point...this Diddy mess. We cringe when other blacks mess up because we know we're going to have to pay the price some way or another.
