I never comment, but this is inexcusable. If a man comes to his job with half his cornrows out or a woman with have her weave done, you'd call them unprofessional and say their behavior is inexcusable. Whether you be rich or poor, there is a certain decorum we must all operate and adhere to. And if I'm wrong, I want my friends to call me out because you better believe the others not only called her out but called her all kinds of names to go with it. So yes, we have a responsibility to keep each other up AND she has a responsiblity to the black community to present herself in a way that is polish in ALL areas if she is the role model that you guys are exhaulting her to be. She is one of the few black faces white America may see and respect, so with that face comes a responsibility and she could have done better than this. For most of us, the banks own our sh*t, so we can't afford to walk into our place of employment without considering what is acceptable to our employers. Most of us are 3-4 paychecks from being financially stapped so we better damn well dance to the tune of those who pay our salaries....and THAT is the big difference between us and Oprah. Who is Oprah answering to? If I were essentially self made billionaire I would not give a damn about what people thought of me. As long as my heart was right with God I would live my life and enjoy the fruits of my labor. And on the flip side while I admire Oprah for her accomplishments and her philanthropy, Oprah Winfrey's name is not on the bottom of the checks paying my mortgage or carnote. So why would I be concerned about how she chooses to wear her hair?
Who the hell deems what is presentable? We are a race of people who have allowed ouselves to be categorized, defined and scrutinized for far too long...is our hair too nappy, is it to staight, are we too light/dark this is such a self destructive attitude. The main difference beyween Oprah and us is that she had a vision of who she was from early on in her life and has never let comments from people define her. Far too much effort is spent trying to conform instead of defining who we are as a people. I work around so many different cultures, ethnicities and religions who don't think twice about representing who they are. I have so much respect for our people who have decided to break free from the mold of what we are supposed to be or how we are supposed to look!
