: MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind of a dangerous new trend going around the homosexual and heterosexual communities. Apparently, some folk are NO LONGER using condoms. Instead they’re relying on pills to prevent HIV transmission.
Here’s an excerpt from an article in The Advocate describing the new trend:
When Adam, an HIV-negative Bostonian in his mid 20s, was dating an HIV-positive man last year, he made a conscious decision not to use a condom when they had sex. .” Instead, he popped a tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug that may help prevent HIV infection. “My partner didn’t insist on [barebacking],” says Adam, who asked that his last name not be used in this story. “I thought it would bring us closer together.” Now single, Adam says he regularly uses condoms again, although he hasn’t been tested for HIV since the relationship ended.This is the CRAZIEST thing we ever heard of….Like Adam, many gay men around the country are opting to forgo the standard defense against HIV -- a condom -- in favor of a highly controversial and thus far unproven method of protection known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. Whether in a serodiscordant relationship or just looking for a fun night (or weekend) out, guys are trading rubbers for HIV drugs like tenofovir, known commercially as Viread, in hopes of preventing infection.
The idea is inspired by post-exposure prophylaxis drug regimens long given to people possibly exposed to HIV -- such as health care workers, rape victims, or those who’ve experienced condom mishaps -- and by the AZT and Nevirapine pills that HIV-positive pregnant and nursing women routinely take to prevent mother-to-infant transmission.
People are so dumb. Why sacrifice your LIFE for moments of pleasure. I don't think people understand the significance of life any longer. Once you lose your life that is it...LIFE is all we have & living it to the best of our ability is our duty while on earth. Living our best life does not entail risky behavior.

Last time I checked the morning after pill does not "prevent" anything but pregnancy...do these gay men not read the small print in the commercials that state the pill DOES not prevent STDs OR HIV? Why would the ADVOCATE even print something like this?!?!?!
I just don't know where to go with this. First of all if this is true then this is a dangerous and ignorant practice.
One thing to take precaution if a mishap occurs such as a condom fails or what not but to do this conscientiously and pre-meditated is unconscionable.

Tenofovir is not an after morning pill. I mean do you guys even know what an "After Morning Pill" is and how it works?

This will make these idiots men and woman feel confortable enough to have unprotected sex and figure they can wake up take a pill and go on about their day.....it's ridiculious. Post-exposure prophylaxis (or PEP) means taking antiretroviral medications (ARVs) as soon as possible after exposure to HIV, so that the exposure will not result in HIV infection. These medications are only available with a prescription. PEP should begin within as soon as possible after exposure to HIV but certainly within 72 hours. Treatment with 2 or 3 ARVs should continue for 4 weeks, if tolerated.

As someone in the pharmaceutical industry (legal), I'm horrified at how stupid people are. I hope they enjoy the lovely "package" they receive.
