I use to live in Atlanta, that ish felt dangerous. Every time I turned the news on they had some depressing stories, if you wasn't from their it made you nervous to go outside sometimes. I don't get why there is still so much violence in areas where there is a higher concentration of Black people. I think it is mostly parenting. It just has to be. I've seen other minorities who experience the same hardships as some Black people do and the other minorities never have their areas turn out as chaotic as the areas containing Black people. ~MTO didnt tell us how they determined what makes a city the most dangerous. I live in Milwaukee and like last year we had the same crime rate as Philadephia which is almost three times bigger. Milwaukee is small as hell and with Racine, they both like Chicago's backyard. Plenty people who live here from Chicago or from down south. Milwaukee is random as hell and people do get killed alot for it to be a small random city in Wisconsin. But the crime rate has gone down alot within the last year tho~
And until the recent event that happened with OPD our crime rate was down 50%. And after this incident it's been pretty quiet around here. So glad about that...regardless of what people think about Oakland...there's a lot of decent people who work hard and love life. Sad that we have this stigma on our city.

@CLassyButterfly- I think eliminating the number of Liquor stores is a HUGE one as well. This will be difficult considering most of these stores are operated by non-black people (Arabs, somalis, koreans, Chinese), who aren't about to shut their businesses for the BENEFIT of BLACK FOLKS (even though they have no qualms with taking our MOney lol).
I think the more affluent black folks aren't doing their part. Some of them could easily buy out some liquor stores and replace them with dollar stores or local 711's. It's sad but thats the reality of our situation.

I was born and raised in a small town 45 min. away from New Orleans, I used to love to visit N.O. growing up. It doesn't surprise me to see N.O. at the top of the list because 1 or more murders happens in that city everyday. I have been living in ATL since 1993 and yes it has it's share of crimes. For the person or person's that keep bringing up the crime stats in Houston after Katrina you'll need to get your facts straight. I'm in noway defending these thugs who did go to Houston and commit crimes but Houston had it's share of crime way before Katrina. My friends brother went to Houston to attend a friends wedding,turned up missing and was found dead in his car weeks later.And this by the way happened way before Katrina. All states have crime.
I'm a native St. Louisan (I grew up on the predominantly African-American North Side), and while I'm disappointed that we ended up at #4, I wasn't exactly surprised. Property crimes (burglaries, smash-and-grab car robberies, etc.) are a particular nuisance these days.
However, I'm an optimistic guy, and I try to find silver linings in clouds. And I see a lot of potential for our city, particularly in the downtown area.
Here in St. Louis, African-American entrepreneurs and brothers Mike and Steve Roberts are making their presence felt. Their company, The Roberts Companies, owns several radio and TV stations across the country, as well as a variety of residential properties in the U.S. and the Caribbean.
And by the end of this year, their 25-story Roberts Tower - the first new residential construction in downtown St. Louis in over 40 years - is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2009:

The Roberts Brothers were VERY fortunate to get their financial ducks in a row before the economy went down the tubes. Several other downtown redevelopment projects - including another tower - are either on hold, or have been scrapped altogether.
Because of the Roberts' downtown presence (they have two loft developments, two hotels, and a theater), they managed to convince one of our major grocery chains, Schnucks, to return to downtown St. Louis.
And I believe that other retailers will soon follow. The number of people living in downtown St. Louis has actually increased to roughly 12,000. I see lots of folks walking their dogs, so it would stand to reason that a retailer like PetSmart would want to come to downtown St. Louis.
It's just a matter of time before things turn around. :)
@Hotbunny when you come to Chicago,Illinois you can find some good House CD's on the the street if you just ask around, there are always people hustling CD's that they make and put together themselves. I know a guy who puts together custom made CD's of your choice or will put together something he feels you will enjoy. Also there is a Club on the South side called the Family Den 8940 South,Stony Island. It's a nice club and they play great house music on certain nights and the DJ also puts together his own house music as well. The murder rate is usually determined by the number of murders per capita, thats why these lists aren't entirely accurate
If the city is smaller and has poverty issues, of course its going to seem like an exorbant amount of murders

I will concede that the condos at Roberts Tower won't be cheap (I think they'll start at $500,000). But once the tower is finished, those condos will sell like hotcakes.
What works to the Roberts Brothers' advantage is that they're capitalizing on a green building technology trend in this country. Roberts Tower will be the first green-certified tower in the Midwest. Environmentally-conscious home buyers will be drawn to it.
BTW, on a recent downtown loft tour, I saw a Roberts Tower display unit. Simply beautiful. :)

Social researchers don't count every homicide that occurred in a given year that would take an inordinate amount of time and money to execute. Don't forget that many crimes go UNREPORTED or face backlog due to understaffed police departments. Thus an exact number of crimes that occurred cannot be determined very easily.
Basically, these researchers use statistical formulas, demographics, and probability to INFER and APPROXIMATE how much crime a given location will generate under certain socioeconomic conditions and demographics.
For example, statistics show that low income neighborhoods are more likely to generate more crime that higher income neighborhoods. Therefore, researchers select cities and locations with a large proportion of low income communities and APPROXIMATE that it is more PROBABLE for that city to experience more crime due to its demographical makeup.
Similarly, communities with a large proportion of minorities (African American, Hispanic, Asian) are more probable to generate crime.
Although many people will say that the facts don't lie but in reality that a multitude of variables that statisticians and researchers acknowledge and clearly are aware of. These variables can greatly influence the end data. However, in order to make the data presentable and understandable to the average American public, those who publish and present these reports ignore the confounding variables.
Basically, what the public is given is a watered down, layman's term and brief report stating that communities with predominantly African American or Hispanic populations are more likely to generate crime...
But you have to realize that what is presented to YOU is only a THIRD of the data actually uncovered by these research institutes.
Not all predominantly black or Hispanic communities mathematically more probable to generate crime. Many of these communities are quite stable and filled with working class, blue collar minorities. Take for example Portland Oregon, or Bakersfield California.
Moreover, you have to consider the economic trend of those regions. Michigan is facing tough economic times, therefore it is more likely to see crime occur in it's cities compared to someplace else like Virginia which is economically better off than Michigan because it is supplanted with a generous pool of government jobs and military installations and overall employment.
Say 10 years ago before GM and Ford where relatively stable, these communities were somewhat less likely to generate crime.

I live down south in NC and the neighborhood I bought my house is in a Historically black neighborhood that was going through "renovations." The cheap price is what attracted me not to mention the free money from the city to do restoration. Well, needless to say the sh*t got old. My block was fine but the areas around it and the foot traffic was horrible. I would see crackhead prostitutes and drunks walking down the street. One crackhead knocked at my door and tried to come in, I called the police on his azz, they were there literally a minute or two after I called 911 and then took his azz to jail. I forgot to mention all of the noise pollution with young black men dressed like clowns acting like fools driving their cars blasting some ignorant ghetto rap through the neighborhood. How can black people if you are so "proud" let your people degrade and sink themselves into the lowest depths of society and still allow them to infest and do their disgusting business in your neighborhoods?

Naah, they got this all messed up. Miami Gardens is not a dangerous place to live at all, its actually a bit on the upscale side of Miami. And so is Orlando, this list is so wrong. Orlando is where Disney World is, i use to live there with those clean paved streets and quiet boring neightborhoods. Now the real dangerous places are Overtown, the Poke n Beans, Lil Haiti for sure, and they are deep in Miami. At least in Overtown and the Poke n Beans you have to worry about getting shot while you standing outside your porch, but in lil haiti, you have to worry about getting shot, and bout someone putting vodoo on you. I don't recall meeting you. If so please make me remeber you. There's crooked police officers in every state just as well as New Orleans. Well, being that I'm in Oakland I can tell you for a fact that there are not enough positive influences or job opportunities for the black youth that there are of the white youth in white areas. So crime, for the most part, is all that the black youth know; i.e. selling drugs, robbing/stealing, etc.
And what's sad is that they can get locked up, do their time and rehabilitate themselves. But, once they get back out into society, employers are not trying to give them a chance.

At this point, there is no other choice but to slip back into crime again. They have to survive somehow. It doesn't make things right, but nowadays in the inner cities that's how it goes unfortunately.

I agree with you. However, let's face the facts:
Every child is not going to grow up in a supportive household.
In a lot of cases, the parents are just as bad as the kids.
And then there are babies with the hood mentality continuously having babies.
And there are those who likely did grow up in a positive household with positive parents, yet still get caught up in the hood life and crime; likely due to peer pressure.
So the fact of the matter is a lot of kids are looking beyond parents for influence (whether good or bad), especially if the parents and household are not right. It's sad.

This article is flawed, where are the sources and is this based on, Homicides? Murders? Theft? Violence? There are no citation sources whatsoever.
What if one city has a higher murder rate than the other but another one has a higher violence rate? Why does your headline say most dangerous city but the book is called "deadliest"? Once again, more flawed journalism from MTO.
I'm still wary as to how these statistics were complied together to produce this list. I'm sure there are alot of murders/thefts/type activity that is rampant in other cities that never gets reported. MTO say dangerous in the title and then 'deadliest' in the topic. Which one is it?
In NewYork, at one time a few years ago, the amount of murders between black people was only half the amount of police who killed them while on duty. Says it all really.

These numbers represent crime per capita. That's why NYC is on it. 10 million people live here. Some of the smaller cities have a concentration of poor blacks that love them some crime. So chances are the more affluent your city is, the less chance of being on the list you are. I think you should be happy to NOT make this list. Why encourage the animal behavior? Even if some cities didn't make the list, if they broke it down by sections and certain streets. of cities, you will get more of an idea. For example, in my opionion. Bidwell Street and Martin Luther King Blvd in Jersey City has got to be one of the most deadliest streetcorners in the country. If you don't believe me, take a trip over there yourself!! The Greenville section of Jersey City is one of the worst sections of town of any city anywhere. But Jersey City overall isn't a dangerous city. Alphabet City in Manhatten is grimey but Manhatten overall isn't grimey.
Let's break it down and go to certain hoods in certain cities and you will see how really dangerous places are.

I am from Chicago and surprised it didnt make the list, considering the JHUd murders and all of the children getting shot at schools. Gary, IN should be at the top of the list. There is not much that is positive in Gary. No one should be proud to be on this list. It amazes me that if you go to all of these cities, you see the same characheristics. Ghettoes, too many liquor stores, poor quality of education. A lot of these police departments are corrupt because they take bribes from drug dealers. That is why a lot of crime happens in these hoods. Everyone of these cities has a lot of single parent households with no real role models. So crime is rampant. its funny how many are quick to discuss the level of poverty and crime in these cities. yes, there are ppl living below the poverty line and crime exist. but most crimes are drug related (selling, using, & distributing). This happens bcuz ppl who live in the suburbs enter our place of residence, purchase their products and return to their quiet communities. Suburbians add to the list of crimes when they get caught purchasing drugs, lending out their vehicles,and wandering the city streets in the wee hours of the morning looking for more drugs. This comes from a number of things. Job discrimination, which to starvation, which ultimately leads to crime to make ends meet and to end the hunger, or to get the heat cut on in the dead of winter.
I don't condone crime, but I understand how it can be tempting for some. Some people have it rougher than others, some people have money in the hood, others have nothing but lint in their pockets and are desperate so they sling dope and make money, but with dope money comes crime.

Poverty coupled with job discimination is a huge motivator for crime.
Poverty + starvation + job discrimination + desperation + crimes like slinging dope for a roof over your head and food = high crime, jail & death rates.
That's the formula America has placed on us.
We're the strongest mofos EVER to deal with this kind of opposition, but it's time we channel where it counts.
For those of you who do not know how these tests are formulated, each city's crime rate is based on the total amount of crime (homicide, theft, drug trafficking, etc.) committed in a city per square mile. That is why smaller cities like Camden (my hometown) and Youngstown, Ohio have higher crime rankings than Philadelphia and Chicago.
However, this is still nothing to be proud of. Yes, most of these cities are impoverished and filled with minorities, but that is no excuse for the amount of crime that goes on in each one of our communities. Instead of glamorizing and excusing the crimes, "repping" your city and complaining because your hood didn't make that list, we need to be devising strategems for improving our communities. With the amount of successful Black folk that there are today, it is a shame that more Black youth than ever before are being incarcerated and succumbing to the drug culture. Packing your bags and running as soon as you get that six figure job isn't going to solve anything. Eventually they are going to follow your ass out to the suburbs and rob you out there. We need to combat the prison system, restructure the school system, and begin to mentor fatherless children so that these cycles won't remain unbroken.

I live out of state now with my husband and children, but go home often. When my cousins and couple of my aunts met my sons, they were joking about how proper they speak, and how much like children they behave. By this I mean that my 4 year old doesn't speak slang, know the hottest rap song, know what weed, and liquor is, or know about sex. I have cousins his age that know all of the above. He acts like and is knowledgeable of what a 4 yr old should.
Anyway my aunt goes, "Ewww...your kids gonna be like some lil nerdy white boys". I asked her what was so wrong with that. I then pointed out how street smart, gangsta, and hood her son (my cousin) was. I asked her if that's what I should want for my sons. I then pointed out how her son sold dope, was basically homeless, in and out of jail, and had no direction or ambition in life. Oh...but he's not a nerdy White boy, so I guess he's fine. Needless to say, my aunt and I aren't as close as we used to be. Truth hurts I guess.

This speaks volumns when a person is chastised for having a 9-5. It also saids a lot about a person/our society when on feels he has to down play the legitimacy of how he recieved his income in order to fit in (i.e. instead of admitting you had/have a job you say you sell drugs). You are more of a cancer to Black people than an actual help. There are so many factors that contribute to the state of the Black community as a whole. While some of our people need a kick in the ass, others succumb to the life around them. Growing up in Camden, I witnessed a lot of this firsthand. I was fortunate to grow up in a family that valued education, hard work and family unity and would accept no less than the best from me. However, there are countless people who are not so lucky. They were born into bad situations, and to just merely call all Black people trifling and an inferior race shows your lack of understanding and grasp on the real state of our people. For all your long diatribes about Black people, you are just as bad as the people you critique because you have bought the hype that we are not as capable as anyone else.
To add to what I was saying, I too have had things said to me because I speak proper or because of where I choose to live. I once dated a guy that lamented on the fact I lived in a prodominately white area. THIS REALLY, REALLY BOTHERED HIM. He'd say things like there is nothing where you live. I could never live here. You live around all those white folks, soccer moms, etc. and even laughed at me when I showed excitement at the new library they were building in the area. I live here because it is convenient for my travels to work and because it is a good area. I wanted to live in a good area expecially since I had purchased my home. As long as it was a good neigborhood I wouldn't have cared what race lived here. Needless to say he is just that, a guy I once dated, and the area is still holding up thus far. Now where he lived the ppl looked like they were on HARD times. Vagabonds lurked in the area and I wouldn't want to walk the streets there at night by myself but 'there were things to do' so that was alright with him.

Please don't be mad or hate cause CHICAGO, NY, or LA isn't on the list. If you haven't noticed these are the three largest cites in the country. Populations in these cites are well over 3 million. Percentage wise, it's impossible for us to be on the list. ATL only has 500,000 people there of course they're gonna make the list, New Orleans might only have 300,000, especially since Katrina population has decreased. If you do the math, we will never be on the list. Chicago still not safe, please don't trust this list.

I actually agree with you on some things. It is a MENTALITY that is causing the destruction of our own communities. But what you fail to realize is that the MENTALITY is multi-faceted. It is not just an inner city young ignorant n.i.g.g.a. thing, it is a system of Black culture that refuses to reach back and help its fellow man. There are two reasons why every race in America has excelled more than us. First, we as a people were brought here stripped of heritage, culture and a formed identity, while other immigrants came here with those things intact. Second, we are the only race of people that will not support each other. Until we break those MENTALITIES, we will never get anywhere. The problem with us as a people is that we have this I got mine, now you get yours on your own syndrome. We are not dedicated to picking somebody else up; we're too busy insulting and destroying them to do that. We don't have time to train young men and young women on proper etiquette; we're too busy calling them trifling and shiftless to do that. We don't have time to show other Black people how to write resumes and look presentable at interviews; we spend too much time bashing them to do that.
What I have discovered through time is that your way will not work. You can beat people over the head with facts till you're blue in the face, but it isn't until you put the sweat equity into training Black people that you will see results. Telling somebody they are ignorant will not get change; showing people a better way will.
There is nothing cute about anything that I said. But it is DESTRUCTIVE to think that you can change the tide of Black America with the way you go about things. That just shows that education doesn't mean people are any less ignorant; it just means you're an ignorant n.i.g.g.a with a degree.

I understand your point of view, and I do agree with you on a lot of things. Have you read "The Conspiracy to Kill Black Boys?" I forget the author at the moment, but that book sheds a lot of light into the plight of the Black male as a whole. But we have to have more than one target, as the problem we face was brought on by a multitude of factors. There is institutionalized racism that still exists in America that has to be fought with in our own communities. We have to fight the culture that glamorizes excessive materialism and a culture of drugs and crime. But we also have to fight this misconception that a lot of college educated Blacks have that if they just leave the hood, all their problems will dissipate.
Growing up in Camden, I learned some very rudimentary lessons about Black people. There are some who are just ignorant and have no regard for life or the lives of other people. However, there are those who were rejected from childhood by their families, the corrupt school system, and the community elite and see the drug culture as a means to an end and a better life. One of my classmates was trying to explain to me that their gang sells drugs and uses the money to rebuild community parks. The problem with this logic is obvious; but the sincerity is there. We have to just tap into that sincerity and rebuild and restructure the mindsets of our people.

Yes, Compton is in LA; LA COUNTY, they have a population of 94,000 and they have thier own mayor, and their own city counsil. Therefore, Compton is a city that stands alone from the city of Los Angeles. LA DID NOT make the top 25!If you live there you should be proud. Also, Chicago is bad, by no means is it just safe to let your guard down cause we didn't make the list. "Glad we didn't" but it still doesn't change anything.

I'm from STL, born and raised there. Moved to the ATL 5years ago. The crime in ATL is no better than it is in STL. STL crime is high because this city is so small. But, there is alot of drugs and murder there. I can agree with that. I never liked STL, aways wanted to move. But, ATL isn't good either. Crime is everyday, from robbery, murder, kidnap, and etc. Not, to mention the homo's, hell that a crime within itself, LOL. I too am from Detroit. I was born and raised here and have never lived in any other city. This is a situation where you are absolutely right, the crime rate of each city named on this list has nothing to do with the city itself. We can blame no one but our fellow man. For everything good there is definitely a bad so for every neighborhood where it seems perfect there is a bad part. People are malnurished mentally and spiritually. There are alot of lost souls out here who don't hold any value for life; not even their own. And with the recession its not getting any better I'll tell you that. For those of you that are residing in these cities, I pray that you keep your head up and stay safe. Beware of your surroundings and don't take any situation for granted. Peace and Blessings to all!

The culture that influences and permeates our community is bad, but the reason why the culture has gotten so bad is because we are the ones who support the damn rap culture. If Black folk didn't buy the damn CDs or come onto the blog sites, the culture wouldn't be strong. Therefore, in order to attack the culture, you have to change the ignorant MINDSETS of Black people as a whole. How do you do that? We have to spend time with these drug dealers and prostitutes, the very people the buorgeisie have passed by. That's how you change the culture; you attack the buying and influencing power. Now, our programs do not work, partly because the people who run these programs have no real commitment to the people around them. They just have that "I helped a little hoodrat" mentality.
That's the action that I propose. You can attack the culture all day long, but people won't give a damn until you teach them the error of their ways.
Also, just as a rebuttal to that Zora Neale Hurston bullsht, a house divided against itself cannot stand. You can part ways with all those Black people if you want to, but we lose strength when we lose numbers. One of the main reasons why the Hispanics and Asians have surpassed us in economic development is because they have unity and numbers. We have to realize that Shaniqua in Compton is just as vital to the future of our race as Benjamin is in suburban Connecticut. We don't realize that one Black person without a high school diploma effects us more than ten Black men with doctoral degrees.
This is the discouraging part: mentoring works, and I do mentor, but we have so much mental damage with both educated and uneducated Black people that has to be curbed, and I struggle with that. Real talk: I don't have all the damn answers, but I know what changed my life was not somebody hollering at me about listening to hip hop but it was the time that people spent with me, teaching me right from wrong.
I don't know if I believe this to be accurate..I live in Louisiana and yes we have crime just like the next city, but there ain't NO way in HELL ya'll gonna make me believe that the N.O. is the most dangerous city & CHI-TOWN (Chicago, IL didn't even make the cut...I have close relatives their who mention someone getting murked every other day...I DON'T BELIEVE IT!
People are forgetting that Chicago has 3 million people in the city alone. The crime rankings are not based on the number of crimes in each city. It's based on population divided by # of crimes. So it's normal for a bigger city to have more crime. However, it doesn't mean that it has a higher per capita crime rate. I think Chicago is rightfully not on this list. Many of the cities that are listed have an alarmingly high rate for them to be a town of several hundred thousand people. Now compare that to the millions that live in New York or LA or Chicago. I think people need to actually do the math themselves.

I was born in Flint, Michigan. My moms moved me & my sis from Flint when I was in 3rd grade back in the 1980's b/c it was bad. We then moved to Orlando, Fla now it's on the list.
