This data is flawed!!!!!! My father is a well know statistics expert. Please don't be deceived. Chicago is #1. Most of those cities on this list have a small pocket (excluding Detroit) of African Americans who are mostly poor & unemployed. Crime data is soley based on these numbers. ALL of the individuals collecting this data are White males. Please don't believe the hype and stop taking their word for everything.
The crazy thing is I reside in St. Louis & my friends & I don't feel like we're living in the #2 dangerous city. I just take it as we're covered by the blood of God cuz we have yet to experience any crimes against us or our families & if it's God's will it will stay that way. Of course Oakland made it, That's why I had to jump over to the next town Hayward. I'm suprised however that Oakland beat Richmond. I worked in Richmond and took BART instead of wasting gas and my supervisor would pick me up and drop me off so I didn't walk up Cutting blvd. This is so sad to me. How long has this been going on? Decades. The cops are crooked as hell in Oakland too just like the LAPD. Something needs to give.

They asked the question on the news this morning -do we feel safe(R) in NYC these days. To me, it depends on what time you are walking the streets. Something can happen at any time, especially in big cities, but I would say at night would probably be the worst time to be out and not be aware of your surroundings. For the most part, though, if I were a black man - I would feel less safe from the police than the criminals, at least in NYC. We can't go a year without a police man shooting a black man or brutalizes them without proper cause.

I am so disappointed to see these type of statistics when the majority of these cities are predominantly black. I currently reside in Baltimore and have for forty-one years. It was once the city I loved and now I can't wait to leave. But the same researchers that study and generate these findings never mention the factors that provoke the rises in criminal activity. People are unable to just live because the cost of living is too high for white and black, everyone is suffering here and no one cares. And I really wish we would all stop using the N-word, it's not making anything better.

I find this list to be so sad because I live in one of these cities. But what I find even sadder is that some of the people on this board are actually bragging that their cities made the list or are mad because their city didn't make a certain rank. There is nothing to be happy about. I just pray for me and my family's protection.

Considering the fact that they do it on an annualized basis only counting person to person murders and not murder-suicides or multiple fatalities. NYC did'nt make me cold,but it makes me tune out everything walking down the street. I had a friend that was soft hearted,she let one of her bum uncles stay with here for one week, of course that week turned into 7 months,my friend was pregnant. A month before she was supposed to deliver her baby,she buckled up and told her uncle to get lost(she found out that he was lieing about going to work also,he laid up on the coach while she worked at the airport) Her uncle says"I got rights,squatters rights" It took my friend almost a year to get this fool out of her house.

My Friend was no one To f with. In her younger days, you would have kissed your azz goodbye doing that. But she made a name for herself and she could not go that route. She had to evict her uncle. Once with my girlfriends for the annual "freak Nit" and the second time with my husband. BOTH times were terrible especially the first. My friends and I stayed at the Hilton over the weekend and cops had to come out there because some negroes were throwing a roll and dice weed party a couple of doors down!! That mess scared me. Dearborn and Ann Arbor are about the best cities in Michigan. The D is dangerous. Sorry but judging this from my experiences.

The Congressional Quarterly Press has released it’s most dangerous city list for 2008 and New Orleans has taken the lead. Last year Detroit was the leader of the pack, but now New Orleans is the most dangerous city.
Camden, New Jersey is second followed by Detroit, St. Louis, and Oakland. Camden had the lead in 2006 so they are climbing the charts again.

June 3, 2009 Hundreds Mourn Slain Officer in Brooklyn By KAREN ZRAICK Hundreds of mourners filed past the coffin of Police Officer Omar J. Edwards on Tuesday afternoon at his wake in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Many wore the same uniform, and many had known him for years from the neighborhood.
Officer Edwards was laid out in a crisp navy blue dress uniform. Two drawings from his toddler son — jagged scribbles on plain white paper — were clipped together and placed on the satiny white interior of the casket, near a gold plaque that read “Omar J. Edwards, 1984-2009.”
Officer Edwards’s widow, Danielle, sat in the third row, wearing a T-shirt with her husband’s face emblazoned on it. She broke down in tears every few minutes, clutching her 1 ½-year-old son, Xavier, in her lap.

He had grown up on Chauncey Street in Stuyvesant Heights and still lived there, with his wife and two sons, in an apartment just across the hall from his mother, Natalia Harding.
A petite woman, Ms. Harding sat in the front row facing the coffin, offering a slightly shaking hand to visitors. “They seem to be pretty strong right now,” said Patricia Dallas, the funeral director. “They’re holding up better than I even expected.”
Officer Edwards was fatally shot last week by a fellow officer in Harlem who officials said mistook him for a suspect. Officer Edwards was off duty but had his gun drawn as he chased a man who had broken into his car, the police have said. The department is still investigating the shooting and has intensified its efforts to train officers on how to react in such situations.
Inside the funeral parlor, three young officers from Officer Edwards’s Harlem precinct took a breather by the back door. Asked about the feeling in the precinct this week, one struggled to answer.
“Everybody’s quiet,” he said finally. “It’s different. I can’t explain it.”
Chi-town, NYC, LA, Philly aren't on the list because those cities are way to big. Its per capita. Most of those cities have under 500k. Its sad. Grew up in the Rich now I live in the town (Oakland). Its really not that bad. I've been to worse place in the Chi and Houston. But numbers are #'s it not nothing to be proud of.

We have good areas and bad areas just like any other city. I was more scared of the hood in Chicago than I ever was in Detroit.

I'm from Detroit born n raise n it's a sad place to be nothing to be proud of n most of family still lives there we have been lucky by the grace of god that no one ife has been taking in violents I pray daily for they safety we are on our 4th generation being raised here and we know it's time to go. We have just two more to graduate c/o 10 n 11 then we out.

Missouri is the most racist place that I have ever lived (compared to Chicago, Tempe, and Columbia SC). Most African Americans are unemployed and uneducated here. Most African Americans here fit all the negative sterotypes given to us as a people. African Americans from Missouri are also VERY VERY racist. Every small bar or club that has catered to African Americans has closed down because of violence. I am extremley saddened and sickend by this situation. I have to avoid most of my own so-called race most of the time-because of the BS. It seems that I am beginning to see through "white" eyes.

i totally agree! i imagine it's because these "experts" don't want to scare off the whites (especially the affluent ones) of chicago and other cities that REALLY make the list. no offense to residents of this list, but it's a collection of cities that are pretty much ignored, when compared to major cities with money. they don't want to tarnish or worsen the reps of chicago or new york or los angeles. tell me if you agree.

Wow! Black Americans need to become more knowledgeable! The only way to campare cities is on a per capita bases (# of mur per 100,000 people). Therefore Philly, Chicago, Ny don't even come close to these other cities in crime. Also, the good areas in these cities far out number the bad parts of town.
The hardest cities in the nation are Detroit, St. Louis, Gary, and Oakland. All four of them have had outrageous crime rates for decades. These cities tend to fly under the radar, because no one cares about these depressed cities (except for Oakland). St. louis even has violent burbs.
