Thank you so much for your article on the phenomenal Beyonce (April 2009) and for highlighting her commitment to women and children, especially victims of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. As she mentioned, the day after watching our documentary, Very Young Girls, on Showtime, Beyonce contacted our organization, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS), which serves American girls and young women who've been trafficked into the commercial sex industry. Without any fanfare, press or entourage, Beyonce, and her mother came to vist our office in Harlem, bringing personalized Christmas gifts for the girls and a real desire to learn from the girls and their experiences. Beyonce came with such humility and genuine warmth and compassion that the girls immediately opened up to her and she sat for many hours and simply listened to them share their stories. Her gift of time and true concern was priceless, especially for girls who are so often judged or ignored by society.
Beyonce's right--it takes all of us, celebrities or not, to make a difference, and together we can end the sex trafficking of girls in our country.

GEMS Visits Beyoncé
Dear Friend,
The highlight of our week, month and possibly our year at GEMS occurred on Friday night when 35 girls and staff piled on a bus to head to New Jersey to see Beyoncé in concert. After seeing 'Very Young Girls' on Showtime last Christmas, Beyoncé was so moved that she came to visit with the girls at GEMS and has become a strong supporter of them and of the fight against the trafficking of girls in our country. The girls were thrilled when they learned that she'd invited them to the concert and that they'd get to go backstage and to see her again.
Yet in the midst of the excitement and happy chaos, I couldn't help but feel sad for some of the girls that weren't able to go to the concert. Fiona who's 16, and Bree 15, weren't allowed to go because they were on probation for prostitution arrests and weren't allowed to leave the state - even to go to New Jersey to see Beyoncé. Alex couldn't go because she'd just moved into a shelter and had a curfew, and Naima was at the hospital taking care of her little brother who'd been stabbed the night before. Saddest of all though were the girls who were forbidden to go - not by parents, but by their pimps who refused to let them 'not work' that night. I was taking calls all afternoon by Tiffany who was crying because her pimp was refusing to let her leave the house. I was heartbroken watching Ebony deflate after a threatening phone call from her pimp and then trying to front like she didn't want to go anyway. As we boarded the bus, I thought about how, even in the midst of such a happy occasion, there was no way to escape the painful realities of the girls' lives who were still trapped in the commercial sex industry.
As we sat on the bus, I noticed one of our girls Tanya, who is seven months pregnant, looking pensive.
'You okay, hon?" I asked.
'Yea, I'm just tired." She paused, "You don't know what I had to do today to come...I had to work the track from 9.30 this morning till 2.30 today just so I could come and miss a few hours of work tonight."
My heart sank. In order to see Beyoncé, she'd had to bargain with her pimp to make up the money she might miss tonight. I knew she'd lied to him about where she was going. No pimp was going to let a girl have that much fun, that much freedom. I was glad Tanya had made it - she deserved something good in her life - yet so sad thinking of what she'd had to endure just a few hours before. I thought about all the other teenage girls traveling to the concert that day and knew that none of them had to be sold over and over that morning to come.
Even late, during the concert, as I watched the girls fervently singing along with
"Don't you ever for a second get to thinking, you're irreplaceable"
"Me, myself and I, that's all I got in the end. That's what I found out, and it ain't no need to cry, I took a vow that from now on, I'ma be my own best friend"
I thought of how meaningful the words were for them. They weren't singing about a high school crush; they were singing about and to the adult men who'd beaten them, manipulated them and sold them. A few like Tanya were still struggling, most had broken free and some were now dealing with the aftermath, others far on the other side of recovery feeling strong and empowered.
It was a wonderful night; the girls danced, laughed, cried and sang till their voiced cracked. When Beyoncé gave them a shout-out from the stage, the screams were deafening. They were so proud that Beyoncé, the biggest star in the world, thought they were special enough and valuable enough to mention 'my special girls from GEMS.' For girls who had been ignored and silenced, girls who'd been told they were worthless and bad, for girls to whom nothing special had ever happened, this moment was priceless.
Even the coach on the way home, the girls were still floating on cloud nine, recapping every moment of the night again and again. When we arrived back in Harlem, Tanya was the last off the bus, "I just don't want to go back to what I've got to deal with" she said. The excitement had worn off and she was left with the feeling that she had no choice that she had to return to him, the fear was too strong. We talked for a little while about the fact that she didn't have to go back - but she couldn't hear it, even thought it was clear she was desperate not to return.
I knew we'd have to do a lot more work, give her a lot more love, more options, more services, before she'd begin to believe that she truly deserved real freedom and real happiness. Not just a few hours worth.

The truth is this; most nights for our girls aren't like last Friday night. We don't get to visit with Beyoncé weekly or enjoy an amazing concert that lifts everyone's spirits. Days at GEMS are filled with many of the same challenges that faced the girls that day - issues with housing, with court, with family members, and for many the reality of their situation - that their every move is controlled by a trafficker who sells them nightly.
And while we're not great entertainers at GEMS, and most of us can't hold a note to save our lives, we do work every day to convince them of their own value and beauty, to help them believe that their future is open and possibilities endless. There are, thankfully, many days at GEMS when the girls do begin to feel, even in the midst of their struggles, that there is hope, that there are people who love them, that they're special.
We're so grateful for the support of Beyoncé, who has made a genuine connection and commitment to the girls at GEMS. The girls deserve those amazing, exciting moments with her and it's really a joy to see them so thrilled. Yet, what they need most of all is the day to day support of people like Julie, Yvonne, Jamie, Zena, Brecklyn, Shaquana, and Yoli who advocate for them in court, visit them in the hospital, celebrate their progress, and stand by them through the scary process of leaving their trafficker. In addition to love and support, the girls also need hosing options, clothing food, metrocards, toiletries - the basic things that every teenage girl has a right to, and yet are so often denied to them.
That's where we need the support from people like you. People who, like Beyoncé, will make a commitment to supporting and empowering girls. People who'll send the message to all of our girls that they're cared for.
I'd love to tell you that in the few days since the concert Tanya has escaped her pimp and is beginning her new life. That's not true...yet. I've worked with hundreds of girls like Tanya over the years and know that it's going to take some time and patience and a lot of support for Tanya to heal and recover from her trauma and enslavement.
But I'm hopeful...hopeful that what we can offer at GEMS is important and that it really does make a difference. Hopeful that people like you will continue to reach out and support us.

Magazine covers and "hype" is about MONEY in someone's pocket, NOT about actual beauty. This FACT is frequently ignored.

This morning, Hov held a press conference in the lobby of Madison Square Garden for his September 11th benefit concert. Tickets for the concert are a flat rate at $50 and go on sale September 8th at 9am for Citibank cardholders. 12:00 pm for general public. All proceeds will be donated to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's charity.

The tickets cost 50 bucks all proceeds from the concert (including all monies accrued from the purchase of commercial items bought) go to the victims of the families, etc. In turn he also markets his album that comes out that very day. Why not help yourself as well as others? Class is officially back in session. Public Enemy member Professor Griff recently addressed a crowd at a forum in Muskegon Heights to bluntly inform that for those that feel as though people like Jay-Z are the face of Hip-Hop, are idiots.
Held Saturday at the Muskego Heights Boxing Club in Michigan, the classroom had a turnout of more than 150 people. The actual event was sponsored by the local radio station 103.7 The Beat and is one of a series of workshops that will be hosted by the station this year with similar, culturally related topics.
"You're not going to agree with everything I'm going to say, I'm just going to tell you that from the beginning," said Griff. "Those people who are going to get angry and red-faced with me, that's fine too, because I have to move you out of your comfort zone."
In a lecture titled “Black Music: The Psycho Analytical Destruction of a Stolen Legacy,” Griff goes in to enlighten minds and break down the logistics behind music and the politics that are associated with it. He reached out to those that enjoy what they hear on the radio and see Jay-Z as the symbol for the genre and plainly stated that there is a problem.
"If you listen to the local radio station and you're digging what's going on the station and you're going down to the club and partying into that same madness, you're going to have a problem with The Professor today," he continued. "If you think -- someone on the panel said Jay Z is the face of Hip-Hop -- if you think he is, you're definitely going to have a problem with Griff today."
From there, Griff opened up his mental book of history as he proceeded to break down a music history lesion that gave heavy emphasis on contributions from socially conscious singers and great musicians such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin.
He further opened the lesson by pointing out the fact that the music industry, heavily ran by white people, has benefited greatly from Black music, in terms of finances. He also added that they can be a factor behind why rappers glorify negatives aspects of life as they are rewarded by the industry when they put on the mask and play the tough guy gangsta rapper role. In a sense, it has become a modern day minstrel show for Hip-Hop in which they play these roles, although they are fully aware of the misrepresentation, in order to secure their financial future.
"What's the subtle, subconscious symbol that they send people? That you got to be like this in order to come in and make it in this world. We have to be defendants of our culture and defend our children from this kind of madness. Are you following me? We have to at least do that."

Someone explain why Beyonce's family is always priority in EVERYTHING? When it was DC, you never ONCE saw Kelly's mama or brother. Never saw Michelle's mother, sister's, brother's or father.
