I too agree that the point of this film is not to stop women from wearing weave. I'm glad that Chris Rock made this documentary because it will enlighten the world about the obstacles that we as black women face when it comes to our hair! Additionally, maybe more people will stop focusing on hair being fake or real OR natural or relaxed and start looking at it for what it is: AN ACCESSORY!!! As a black woman (with natural hair---not chemically treated), I like the versatility that I have. I am, have always been, and will always be a FAN of weave and extensions (wearing a weave now).
LMAO......We can't live without it!!! Raven Simon looks like a younger version of Lisa Raye, very pretty! Gabby Union is flawless beautiful as usual. Eve's ponytail is a hot mess. Mylessa Ford, nice wig, but I don't rock wigs. Elise Neal, Why do your face looks like that? Scary....Maalak Rock's hair, it's so out of style!
Black women please stop the Madness!!!!! The weaves, and the wigs!!!! An accessory is just that, and accessory, it doesn't mean wear it all day everyday!!!! I dated a fine sister last year, and she wore a short wig, and that was ok. But she wore it every damn day!!! First time we slept together....I woke up in the middle of the night. I looked to my left, and the wig had come off...lol. She little nappy beebee's...lol. No more wig-gers for me. It just wasn't cool. Black women be proud of your hair...short, long, nappy, straight it doesn't matter. Just keep it real!!!!!!
I've never seen his little stuck up wife in braids. Could he have requested they wear it for the irony? And what about Solange on Oprah talking about her haircut? lol I watched 70% of her segment and she looked so awkward and lame with her FAKE NOSE, FAKE EYELASHES and FAKE NAILS. I won't even mention the hypocrisy of having your makeup professionally done...or wearing it period, really, when your point is that you were forced to "submit" to something. If Oprah hadn't introduced her as "Beyonce's little sister" I would have thought the whole thing was a waste. I want to see the movie, btw!
I am so glad he made this movie so white people can stop asking us stupid questions about our hair. I do not understand the obsession that white people have with our hair. I could care less about their hair. A WEAVE--IT'S AN OPTION!!!! Like Solange said on Oprah, people go through phases. Hey, if you want to go short one year and long the next--SO WHAT!!!! There are more important things to obsess over than how a black woman chooses to wear her hair.
That movie wasn't going to change what most women's perception of beauty is and for many, many many decades that has been straight hair, but hopefully sense he was inspired to make this film by his little daughters and their unhappiness with the texture of their hair it will help them to realize and all little black girls that they DO HAVE BEAUTIFUL HAIR even in it's natural curly and course state. 4u2.com
@blackbeauty21
Because black women get added hair usually for different reasons than all those other ethnicities...IE...they want to look more eurocentric. Other ethnicites get added hair for fullness or maybe to make their hair longer, which they usually could grow on their own. Black women get longer hair a lot of the time because they don't care for their own hair and are addicted to having someone else's fake hair on their head, so their own hair isn't taken care of.
@DCCowgirl, I'm glad no one is responding to him. He is obviously very insecure. Why does Chris Rock's comments bother him so much? If you don't care for us, you'd avoid any contact with us, not obsess over us. Also, unless you are Khloe Kardashian's scorned ex-boyfriend, why would you care that she married Lamar Odom and resort to calling him racist names? That's her choice to marry who she wants. He has some deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. I hope he gets some counseling.
I remember when I was growing up back in the day, the girls at my middle/high schools and even college (80's - early 90's) did not pride themselves off being fake with fake hair. Trying not to stereotype but this is some real sh*t... the girls who were about business (smart) and got all the guys wore their natural hair (relaxed, long and straight). It was their hair (not bought). Then as time moved along... here we are. A mess! Why do yall do that to yourselves? I love natural kinky hair but can appreciate a lady with relaxed hair as long as it ain't all big and fake looking.
I hate to say this but the majority of Black women would NEVER give up weave, wigs, extensions, and perms. The brainwashing started with madame cj walker who promoted this along with her skin bleaching products and she is glorified in the annals of american history and by Black women. Although madame cj gets a pass from me because she lived in a time when Black people still referred to themselves as negro's and colored. What is our women's excuses now? I don't care what excuse you give or how you try to analyze the situation if you are wearing anything other than "original" continued.....
part 2.....
you have some deep psychological barriers or should I say issues that have to be dealt with. I hate to sound cliche but REAL TALK. Don't even have me bring up the contacts or like this character's eve blondeness. smh. Black women are beautiful just the way they are and I don't care how much negative flack I get for making this statement, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourselves these same questions I'm posing! peace be upon you!
I've been weavless four about four years now. I love it i feel free and much more confident. However, from time to time i must admit i long for a track or two But i wont do it because i belive i will get addicted. yet, i still do not belive that black women should take out thier weaves out all races of women wear weaves but for some reason its maganified with black women. i"m pissed that Koreans who don't respect us is makeing so much money off of us that's why i won't wear another weave ever in my life. and btw every body's weave looks nice. Melissa Ford looks great.
I also understand that some women do have health issues (no hair from chemo, etc.) which they may feel more comfortable with wearing a wig. That is all good. I really question the deeper intentions for covering up your natural hair (KINKY) that God gave ya?! Was that a mistake or by design? Learn your nine ether strength black queens. Wake up, been sleeping too long... amnesia at its finest. Much love.
BLACK FEMALES WITH FAKE HAIR----NOT NATURALLY GROWN FROM THIER SCALP are SELF HATING....ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!!...FAKE AZZ WANABEE WHITE FEMALES!!!

I am soooo anti-weave (lace weaves, wigs, glue or sewn-in, etc) Micro braids like J-Hud's are cool and every now and then a weave ponytail is cool too IN MY OPINION.
People wanna scream "what's wrong with wearing a weave??" I say, "what's wrong with rocking your own hair". And just because your hair isn't long doesn't mean that it cannot be long in the future, if you go to a HAIR CARE SPECIALIST and not a stylist. All a stylist does if make your hair look STYLISH. If you go to a beautician who focuses on proper treatment of the hair, so that there is no breakage, bald edges etc and will just help you tame your hair no matter what the texture or length is, you will be just fine. People say a weave is easier because you get it done that one time and then you can walk around like that for a month or even longer & just care for it at home. But in all actuality, you are only treating the WEAVE and not YOUR HAIR!!! So what is the point??? I goto the salon every other week for a wash/treatment/deep conditioner and anything else my hair requires. Yes, I do get relaxers for a straighter look and use flat irons/crimp irons/curlers as well in between visits. So you really DO NOT have to wear weave just to have a different look. I have colored my hair in many different shades in the past and have wore my hair in different lengths (bobs, short cut w/ shaved off in the back, long hair with bangs etc). All I am tryna say is you can do a lot w/ natural hair, so you don’t have to result to weave!!!!
And I am sick of people using the word "Hater". It is the most MIS-USED and OVERUSED word in the black community. Just because someone dislikes something or has an opinion in general DOES NOT make them equivalent to a hater. Like WTF???
Hate is a VERY strong word. Just because someone dislikes weaves, does not mean they HATE them. And who would go out of their way to "HATE" on another girl who rocks weave (it aint even your hair). Who would hate on a pack of hair that can be PURCHASED by anyone, if they want to wear it??? That is complete asinine!!!
I'm a weave advocate, but I do wear my real hair out 80% of the time. It's a good length and it's healthy.

@bourgie_girl women dont wear weaves because they have too, it is a choice! @ all the people who have a problem with weaves, question, why are you all making this a black womans issue. would you say that kourtney kardashian has a self hate issue cuz she went to the salon and got tracks added to her hair? would you say that Madonna is unhappy with herself because she adds hair and dyes her hair so that she can be a blond?
Proper maintenance to Black hair any Blk female can have a nice full length of hair...dying and frying ur hair causes more damage than weaves. Weaves as others on here stated is for beauty enhancements problem is many women of all races get lazy and do not want to keep their hair up. Oprah has the same beautician 4 20+ yrs..which is another thing having too many hands in ur hair in my opinion is not good either.
....and for those that feel the need to say your mixed means u are better or have better hair is not true. Do you think that you do not have to maintain it? Yes, u do no woman can go without taking care of her hair I don't care if ur black, white, or other. Stop maintaing ur hair for 1 yr no washing, conditioning and so forth and let's see how ur hair looks then. So, please stop saying ur mixed like ur better.
"Ok folks I gotta say to the fellas, yall be crying when a sista hair aint long down to her ass, then when she get a weave that enhances her looks, u cry about that"
"When Chris was on Oprah the other day, he said the majority of women he talked to said they wear weave to look better, not to please a man"
Am I the only one who sees the contradiction in these statements?
Well the truth is that the VAST MAJORITY of BLACK WOMEN LOOK WORSE WITH FAKE HAIR OR WEAVE...You can make all the excuses you want as to why you will wear fake hair but the truth remains the truth!!!...BLACK WOMEN WITH FAKE BONE STR8 HAIR look HORRIBLE...the EQUIVALENT for PURE WHITE WOMEN...will be like PARIS HILTON WITH A SHORT AFRO WIG!!!...THe inconsistencies of a black female with str8 hair look a HOT AZZ MESS MOST OF THE TIME!!!...
I agree with Bella 83. If a woman wants’ to wear weave it’s their prerogative. I stopped relaxing my hair for almost two years and I did that through the assistance of weaves. Does that make me a fake, insecure and a shallow woman? I know more women who wear their hair natural -relaxed free and still wear weaves b/c it can be utilized as a maintenance style meaning it keep their hair protected from sun damaged heat. It also prevents them from utilizing the flatiron, hot comb which can be very detrimental to your hair. My hair is very thick and long, and the irony of my hair staying healthy was b/c of the occasional weave styles. Hmm. Go figure! I for one always wanted to try the Rhianna shot hair cut, but you know what I didn’t have the guts to cut my hair. So, I put a sew in weave in that was the exact replica of the short hair cut and loved it. But, after a while I got tired of it and transition back to wearing my natural thick locks instead. It’s called versatility, choices and options people it’s not that serious.
I have long thick curly hair, but I wear a weave ever once and awhile. But most of the time I just flat iron my hair and rock it like that. You know its good 2 switch it up sometimes. It shouldn't matter how women choose to wear their hair, its their head so they're intitled to wear how they please.
@HandsomeStallion..I get my hair done for me but I am married so I ask my husband his opinion as well. It don't bother him if I get a weave or not the same as him having a goatee I prefer that many men don't look good w/ the butt naked face but if he chose to cut it off I still love him anyway. Many men look good w/baldheads and many don't the same low cuts, waves spinning and the like don't look good on everybody. I do what looks good for me not to please society even when I was single and I pretty sure most men and women do whatever looks good for them<<<I would hope that's the case.
I can't wait 4 this movie 2 come out. Altho this movie is about "us", it's for the white folks. Just sonethin else for them 2 b up on when it come to Blk ppl. I see where CR was going w/ this in the production of this film. But BW live this everyday. Like I said..he didn't make this movie 4 US, he made it 4 THEM..
When Chris was on Oprah he called out those white women who dye their hair blonde. Lol@ their faces but for the most part WW are no different than BW they get weaves, tans, botox, and so forth anything to enhance your natural beauty is ok. Some women in all races take it to the extreme sometimes. My thing is if u don't live urself than how can others love U!
I agree! I used to be natural and relaxed my hair because my hair is true African pride! Lol! The longer it got, the more time I spent on it! I used to braid it up every night which took me 2 hours! That's how thick my hair is! Now my hair it long, gorgoues, and if I want to add even more length to it my perogative!
I don't give a fu3k if you take this the wrong way or not but "ATTENTION BLACK FOLKS OF AMERICA" this debate about hair is sooooo not important. There are much bigger things to be discussed in the black community, hair should not be an issue. I am so glad this type of sh!t does not cause me to lose sleep at night fu3k. This topic is dumb, ive seen much more intelligent topics discussed at a junior high debate meeting. Im assuming white people dont talk that much about "THEIR WEAVES" because you know why????? Its not that fu3kn serious.
MTO you need to educate your readers with better stories. Their is no way in h-e double hockey sticks a Celebrity story about hair should generate more comments then a student being beatin to death. Im not saying discuss politics or news but let us know about some current events or what good things celebrities have going on. All I read is negative sh!t. Im tired of seeing b!tchs with their legs spread in the club or on the cover of some low rate magazine.
@A-Sez- Girl they DONT get it lol.
@Just_a_little_biased, Kayjay508, Bluboy, and bougie-girl- Excellent comments. All of you are on point. NOthing wrong with wearing wigs/weave to switch up your hair style every now and then, but when WEAVE is worn 24/7-365 days a year, every year, then there are some psychological issues going on. It's as simple as that.
Why is everyone so concerned about what someone else is doing to their hair? People need to focus on "SELF". Stop looking at other females saying "OHH she is wearing a weave". Other races don't do that sh!t. They could give a flying fu3k. But no black females love to tear each other down an point out flaws. Im the only black female at my job and Im so glad my coworkers dont give a damn about if my hair is real or not. Who does that sh!t.
If someone chooses to wear hair pieces that is their buisness not yours. REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY TIMES OR HOW LONG THEy WEAR IT. Even if it is a result of self-esteem issues who are we to tell someone they need to find another way to boost their confidence. Other races tear us down enough we should not do that to each other. If my friends like their weaves and it makes them feel good Im not going to tell her take that sh!t out and get some confidence.
Growing locks was the best decision I have ever made for MYSELF. I'm done with the creamy crack and wigs. However all bw may not feel comfortable with natural hair or their own hair yet. We've been conditioned for too long, especially with what's in the media today. It's all about straight hair and edges. I say look they way you want to look. LOL @caramelprinze
i think the movie will send off a bad message when viewed for some reason.
BUT OTHER THAN THAT. GUYS WHO SAY THEY DONT LIKE OR ARE NOT ATTRACTED TO WOMEN WHO WEAR WEAVE ARE MOSTLY HYPOCRITICAL AND INDENIAL. DO THEY KNOW 95% OF VIDEO VIXENS, EYE CANDY MODELS, PORN STARS, AND MODELS ( HIGH FASHIONED) ARE ROCKING EXTENTIONS (CLIP-INS, WIGS, HALF WIGS, LACE FRONTS, GLUED IN TRACKS) FROM ALL RACES. THESE ARE THE SAME WOMEN GUYS FANTASIZE ABOUT ON THE DAILY OR GO GUGUGAGA OVER.
Courtney76
...My small-minded white friend. Black women do not have a handicap called lack of hair growth. Our hair grows very long when it is in it's natural state. Continuous chemicals & perms cause breakage over time. Would you hire blacks to work for you if they wore their hair in their natural state????
@NYSDiva- Well it must be a handicap if so many millions of black women wear it everyday. If they dont consider their hair a fault why wear weave all the time? Why not wear it natural? It doesnt make sense to me. Some black people claim to be so proud of their blackness yet they cover their curly hair with straight weave out of shame of their natural hair.
Women in hollywood BEEN waerin weaves! Thats not gonna stop just because of this movie, which I wanna see!
And just my 2 cents, there is NOTHING wrong with wearing a weave. Women OF ALL RACES wear them for many different reasons and shouldn't have to justify those reasons to any of these bird-brained no clue havin' azz men! How are yall gonna tell people how they should wear their hair that's on THEIR head?!?! Go find some bidnezz and worry about ya own hair! And that goes for some women too who seem to have problems with other women wearin weaves!
ALRIGHTY, MY 2 CENTS THAT I'M ENTITLED TO.
MY FELLOW BLACK WOMEN,YOU DO NOT HAVE TO JUSTIFY TO ANYONE HOW OR WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WEAR YOUR HAIR A CERTAIN WAY, REAL OR FAKE. DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND BE CONFIDENT IN IT.
BLACK MEN, SUPPORT YOUR WOMEN, REGARDLESS. U PLAYED A PART IN THE INSECURITY THAT LED US TO THIS MOMENT, HOLDING UP WOMEN OF OTHER RACES TO US AS THE EPITOMY OF BEAUTY ALL OUR LIVES.
WHITE PEOPLE, WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? BESIDES YOU HAVE LITTLE ROOM TO JUDGE WHEN YOU ALL OBVIOUSLY HATE YOURSELVES. THE TANNING SALON BUSINESS IS A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY. NEED I SAY MORE?
Kudos to NYSDiva and glam_barbie. I don't understand people like Courtney76 and Sed_Haec who have a disdain for us but stay on our websites because they are obsessed with us. White women must have this handicap too since they wear weaves more than us. Therefore, white women must have shame for their thin, natural hair.
Why do you all obsess over us so much? I wouldn't go see a movie about your handicaps -- lack of ability to grow an a$$, lips, thick hair, and lack of pigmentation.
Whatever makes women feel good!! Weaves and wigs are a way a life for some people and other people, it is just high fashion!!! They look good and very nice!! Fashion is Fashion!! Nothing wrong with a good weave or wig!!
PS- I don't think this movie will be a hit though. It is just not that interesting.
I love weaves and disagree with the people on here saying it is a part of "self-hate". I wear weaves because I am a stylish woman who likes to change her style, not because I feel as though me nor my hair is beautiful. In addition, I no longer relax my hair and the hair extensions protecting it from heat by flat irons, blow dryers, and etc which can break off your real hair. If a weave is put in correctly and you maintain your natural hair properly, it will actually grow. My hair grows 1-2 inches a month, which is more than the average hair growth.
NYSDIVA the difference is that they're not getting butt implants and tans to look African American. Do you understand how silly it sounds when people try and compare black women wearing Indian texture hair weaves to white women going tanning? African Americans have been an oppressed group in society...white people are not trying to make themselves look more like an oppressed group. Theyre doing it to have a "latin" look if anything. The norm in society is eurocentric standards of beauty and its driven black women to spend billions of dollars to achive it.
@Courtney76-not sure why you would state the following "black woman have a handicap which is lack of growth" "shame for our own natural hair" you are the type that throw in slide remarks in on the sly and think you suppose to get a pass because you supposedly not a blatant racist like Sed. Why do WW dye their hair Blonde, millions of WW do, why not be the natural color that you are? The plastic surgeries(billion $ business due to WW not BW). Should we say lack of confidence(change of hair color to fit the dumb Blond stereotype), t*ts, azz, lips and pigmentation is your(WW) handicap.
soseductive no one is saying you can't wear a weave. what people are saying is that that should not be the only thing we ever see you in, someone else's hair. if you rock your own natural hair, then there's nothing wrong with an occasional weave. but understand your hair isn't growing just b/c you have on a weave, its growing anyways...nothing on top of your head makes your hair "grow" faster.
@mizzlady1, there's a difference between dying your hair blonde and wearing someone else's hair on your head constantly. blonde is at least within their own spectrum of hair colors. now if i saw an asian woman with blonde hair i would say they have issues, just like i say a black woman who constantly wears some other ethnicity's hair that does not even look natural half the time. if you want straight hair, why not just flat iron it? i wear my hair straight all the time even tho i don't have a relaxer. its down my back and healthy.
i'd also just like to point out that aaliyah's hair was natural and it was not mixed people hair, the people who did her hair described it as coarse. but it was still long, because she took care of it and she got it pressed every 10 days (though she did wear extensions on tour and in SOME of her videos).
@bourgie_girl My comment was if we are suppose to keep ourselves in our natural state then lets be real about everything not just hair was my point. I understand what your saying but there are many reg (not celebs) BW that have a nice length of hair inc. myself it may not be down to my azz but its long and healthy. I just did not like that comment that courtney76 made that we have "lack of growth in our hair" or "shame for a natural hair" because to me its not true. Most BW can have long full healthy hair if they treat their hair properly like Oprah and Aaliyah like you stated.
mizzlady1 ok i gotcha, lol. yeah, i just wish more black women would get educated about their hair and not rely so heavily on fake hair. you're right, black hair does not grow especially slow, it just breaks off easily. i hate when ppl say "my hair won't grow" and then go to get a relaxer every 6 weeks for touchups on newgrowth.
i personally think natural hair, whether relaxed, flat ironed and natural or in its natural texture is so much better than the wigs and weaves. 70% look like fake hair.
Hair really isnt that serious. But nobody should wear weave 365 days a year. Thats not cool. People can tell when you wear a weave. Its pretty obvious on most people. The thing about black hair is that our hair grows out and then down. Thats why it takes longer for longer hair growth. White, asian and latin hair just grows down. It makes their hair much thinner and ours thicker.
Courtney76
U know nothing about black women's hair! We have thin, & thick hair just like ww! The most determining factor of black hair growth is moisture! Our hair grows @ the same rate as urs does, however relaxing (too much), over styling, and too much heat makes anyones hair dry & more prone 2 breakage! Relaxing is the equilvalent of coloring & if u overprocess any hair it will break! Remember this so u don't have 2 b schooled again!
Despite the opinion that most in attendance are wearing hair that's not extended from the root of their scalp, they all look good. Eve's ponytail is actually very cute and why is Melyssa Ford standing like that? At first glance, I chuckled out loud...she looks like she's trying to imitate the funky donky stance with that "I've got poop in my mouth" expression on her face.
