I'm surprised at the igorance here. Every state has an unclaimed funds department; this is NOT a scam. You do NOT have to pay taxes to get the money (despite what a reader said). The claim process is simple: You just fill out a form to prove your identity and voila, you get the check (although it can take a few weeks...don't count on paying next month's rent with the money.)
I found $800 this way in N.Y.; it was a last paycheck from a job from years ago. Just Google "unclaimed funds" & your state to find your state's website & search online. Search every state you've ever lived in.
But if you get an unsolicited letter from a company saying you have unclaimed property somewhere, BEWARE. These companies take a big percentage but YOU DON'T NEED THEM. Just go online and find the money yourself. You don't need a thing from that company. All they do is go online and search for people who have money; you can do the exact same searches yourself for free with the method I describe above. You can also search for friends and relatives...maybe you can talk them into giving you a percentage of the money you found for them!
