I don't know the circumstances surrounding this man's death, whether or not the police shoot him in cold blood or if he exhibited violent behavior. If the police killed him without justification, then they are just as in the wrong as he was for killing those officers. Regardless of the circumstances, I do know that we SHOULD NOT be making this man into a martyr or placing him on a pedestal for his actions. He wasn't some kind of political activist rallying against police oppression, he was a violent criminal with a rap sheet a mile long. Stop praising him like he was a freaking hero.

Okay I live in Washington and there's so much misinformation out there right now it's unbelievable.

1. There was only one Officer at the scene last night, he pulled up to a car that was idling in the middle of the road in a neighborhood. There was no one inside the car yet it was running in the middle of the road. He ran the plates, found out it was stolen and then noticed a man approaching the car, that man turned out to be Maurice Clemens. Now what happened after that I still question, supposedly the lone Officer gave three warnings to Maurice before he finally shot him.

2. There are no reports that Maurice provoked him or threatened the Officer in anyway. Which means, at least to me, he should not have been shot.

3. They found one of the dead Officers Glock in Maurices possession when they searched him after shooting.

While what he did was wrong, we have a due process in the country. there's no reason his life should have been ended if he in no way provoked the Officer. No one has the right to take anothers life, be they Officer or not. That is for a group of his peers to decide.

I read reports that a single cop spotted him working on a reported stolen car and asked him to stop, and he kept coming forward and tried to pull one of the slain officer's, so the cop killed him. Other relatives of his may also be arrested.

SEATTLE - Authorities in Washington state are wasting no time hauling into court the people suspected of helping alleged cop killer Maurice Clemmons elude police for two days.

A police officer shot and killed Clemmons in Seattle this morning, ending the manhunt that began shortly after police say Clemmons shot and killed four Lakewood officers on Sunday. Early on, investigators knew Clemmons had been wounded by one of the dying officers. They knew he had to be getting help from people because he could not have escaped on his own given the nature of his injury.

Eddie Lee Davis, 20, and his brother Douglas Davis, 22, pleaded not guilty today to charges of first-degree rendering of criminal assistance. Police say they were friends of Clemmons. A third man, Ricky Hinton, who was Clemmons' half brother, was not charged today but is jailed on $2 million bond pending further investigation.

A report in the Seattle Times says court documents indicate the three men helped Clemmons after he showed up at their house bleeding. They reportedly knew he had shot police officers and drove him to a relative's home for medical treatment. Police say several other people were then involved in moving Clemmons around the Tacoma and Seattle area and say up to seven people may eventually be charged with criminal assistance.

Relatives of the slain officers were in court today, expressing disbelief that anyone would willingly try to help a man who had just ambushed and killed four people.

SEATTLE - The man suspected of gunning down four police officers in a suburban coffee shop was shot and killed by a lone patrolman investigating a stolen car early Tuesday. Three people were arrested for allegedly helping the suspect elude authorities during a massive two-day manhunt.

Maurice Clemmons was carrying a handgun he took from one of the dead officers when a Seattle policeman recognized him near a stolen car in Rainier Valley, a working-class south Seattle neighborhood, about 2:45 a.m., Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said.

The vehicle was running but unoccupied when the officer pulled up, radioed in the license plate number and realized the car was stolen, Pugel said.

The officer saw something moving, got out of his car, saw Clemmons and ordered him to show his hands and stop. Instead, Clemmons ran.

"He wouldn't stop," Pugel said. "The officer fired several rounds."

The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities say Clemmons, 37, killed four Lakewood officers at a coffee shop Sunday morning in Parkland, a Tacoma suburb about 35 miles south of Seattle. After a massive manhunt for two days, police tracked him down using possible hiding spots supplied by Pierce County investigators, said Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the county sheriff.

Police were talking to people who saw or heard the confrontation. One of the witnesses said she was awoken by noise outside her home.

"It sounded like pops, like gunshots is what we thought," she said. "We saw cops coming, running with guns drawn through here, with a couple of guys with the SWAT shields."

A couple dozen police officers milled around at the scene where Clemmons apparently was shot Tuesday morning, shaking hands and patting each other on the back after one of the largest manhunts in the region. The officer who shot Clemmons was not injured, Pugel said.

At least three people have been booked into the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma, accused of aiding Clemmons. Police planned to arrest more people who helped Clemmons.

"We expect to have maybe six or seven people in custody by the day's end," said Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County sheriff. "Some are friends, some are acquaintances, some are partners in crime, some are relatives. Now they're all partners in crime."

Clemmons had stayed on the run for nearly two days with help from a network of friends and family who gave him places to stay, medical aid, rides and money, police said. Police believe people close to Clemmons have misled officers, and Troyer said anyone helping him could face charges.

Troyer didn't immediately give the names of the people already arrested on suspicion of rendering criminal assistance. On Monday, officers detained a sister of Clemmons who they think treated the suspect's gunshot wound.

"We believe she drove him up to Seattle and bandaged him up," Troyer said.

Authorities said the gunman singled out the Lakewood officers and spared employees and other customers at the coffee shop. He then fled, but not before he was apparently shot in the torso by one of the dying officers.

Killed were Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, and Officers Ronald Owens, 37, Tina Griswold, 40, and Greg Richards, 42.

Police said they aren't sure what prompted Clemmons to shoot the four officers, who were in uniform and working on paperwork at the coffee shop just two blocks outside their jurisdiction.

"The only motive that we have is he decided he was going to go kill police officers," Troyer said. He said Clemmons talked the night before the shooting about killing a group of cops and watching the news.

Police believe Clemmons chose the coffee shop because it was frequented by police officers from various agencies.

"We do not believe that the Lakewood officers were actually targeted other than that they were police officers in that location at the time where he knew he could find police officers."

Clemmons was described as increasingly erratic in the past few months and had been arrested earlier this year on charges that he punched a sheriff's deputy in the face.

Police surrounded a house in a Seattle neighborhood late Sunday following a tip Clemmons had been dropped off there. After an all-night siege, a SWAT team entered the home and found it empty. But police said Clemmons had been there.

Police frantically chased leads on Monday, searching multiple spots in the Seattle and Tacoma area and at one point cordoning off a park where people thought they saw Clemmons.

Authorities found a handgun carried by the killer, along with a pickup truck belonging to the suspect with blood stains inside. They posted a $125,000 reward for information leading to Clemmons' arrest and alerted hospitals to be on the lookout for a man seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

Authorities in two states were criticized amid revelations that Clemmons was allowed to walk the streets despite a teenage crime spree in Arkansas that landed him an 108-year prison sentence. He was released early after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted his sentence.

Huckabee cited Clemmons' youth in granting the request. But Clemmons quickly reverted to his criminal past, violated his parole and was returned to prison. He was released again in 2004.

"This guy should have never been on the street," said Brian D. Wurts, president of the police union in Lakewood. "Our elected officials need to find out why these people are out."

Huckabee said on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" Monday night that Clemmons was allowed back on the street because prosecutors failed to file paperwork in time.

Pulaski County Prosecutor Larry Jegley, whose office opposed Clemmons' parole in 2000 and 2004, said Huckabee's comments were "red herrings."

"My word to Mr. Huckabee is man up and own what you did," Jegley said.

Clemmons was charged in Washington state earlier this year with assaulting a police officer and raping a child, and investigators in the sex case said he was motivated by visions that he was Jesus Christ and that the world was on the verge of the apocalypse.

But he was released from jail after posting bail with the assistance of Jail Sucks Bail Bonds.

Documents related to those charges indicate a volatile personality. In one instance, he is accused of gathering his wife and young relatives and forcing them to undress.

"The whole time Clemmons kept saying things like trust him, the world is going to end soon, and that he was Jesus," a Pierce County sheriff's report said.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the location of Clemmons is not known, and it's possible he may still be in the neighborhood staked out overnight by Seattle police. Troyer also says people who know Clemmons told investigators that he had been shot in the torso.

The University of Washington police have alerted students to an unconfirmed report that the suspect in the Lakewood police shootings may have been sighted on or near the campus in Seattle.

Cmdr. Jerome Solomon says someone reported that Maurice Clemmons was seen getting off a bus about 7 a.m. Monday near the university's hospital. He says police are checking the area.

Students have been alerted by e-mail and text messages.

Troyer said warrants for first-degree murder have been issued against Clemmons. A $125,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the suspect's arrest, Troyer said, according to a Twitter post on The Seattle Times' Web site.

The neighborhood is still locked down.

Negotiators had been trying to communicate with Clemmons using loudspeakers, explosions and even a robot to try to prod him from hiding. At one point, gunshots rang through the neighborhood, about 30 miles from the original crime scene.

"We have determined that in fact he has been shot," said Troyer. "He may be deceased from his gunshot wound."

Troyer said Clemmons was shot by one of the murdered police officers, according to The Seattle Times.

Police said they knew the suspect was injured because they have detained other people who reportedly assisted Clemmons after the shootings, The Seattle Times reported.

Troyer would not comment on the number of people they have detained.

Clemmons has a long criminal history, including a long prison sentence commuted by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee nearly a decade ago and a recent arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Washington.

Huckabee issued a statement: "Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State."

"This is a horrible and tragic event and if found and convicted the offender should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

Clemmons allegedly went to a coffee house on Sunday morning and opened fire on the Lakewood officers, killing Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, Ronald Owens, 37, Tina Griswold, 40, and Greg Richards, 42, as they caught up on paperwork at the beginning of their shifts. He fled but authorities believe he might have been wounded by one of his victims.

"We don't know if he's still alive. If he isn't, it's because he succumbed to the wound he received yesterday when he was in the struggle with the police officer that managed to get a shot fired at him before he was killed," Troyer said on CBS television.

Police surrounded the house late Sunday, and a negotiator used a loudspeaker early Monday to call him out by name, saying: "Mr. Clemmons, I'd like to get you out of there safely. I can tell you this, we are not going away."

Any response from inside the house was inaudible from the vantage of a photographer for The Associated Press. But shortly thereafter, police began using sirens outside the house, and there were several loud bangs before the negotiator resumed speaking. By 3 a.m., the loudspeakers and explosions had fallen silent. Seattle Police spokesman Jeff Kappel said Clemmons has never responded. It's not clear whose house it is.

Clemmons is believed to have been in the area of the coffee shop around the time of the shooting, but Troyer declined to say what evidence might link him to the shooting.

Investigators say they know of no reason that Clemmons or anyone else might have had to open fire on the four as they sat working on their laptops Sunday. Court documents indicate that Clemmons is delusional and mentally unstable.

"We're going to be surprised if there is a motive worth mentioning," said Troyer, who sketched out a scene of controlled and deliberate carnage that spared the employees and other customers at the coffee shop in suburban Parkland, about 35 miles south of Seattle.
