Actually, we're pretty sure that NO ONE over at ABC News did any research WHATSOVER!!! If they did, they would have known that marriage rates among Black women are UP!! In fact, after reaching an all-time low of 46% in the mid 1990s - the Black marriage rate has GROWN STEADILY since then, and is now close to 50% for the first time since the 1970s. FYI, these statistics come from the US Census.
So if Black women are getting married at the highest rate in nearly 30 years, why don't you hear about this? That's a good question.
And SMDH at them having Steve Harvey as a marriage expert. Didn't his last wife accuse him of BEATING HER AZZ and then SWINDLING HER OUT OF MILLIONS????

Since I work in a very diverse situation...I am only going off the almost 500+ women I work with. Most of white peers are married - while most of my black sisters are not. We also have to take in account that these women are in ATL. Were the rates are terrible like 10 to 1. But this is not a new phenomena this has been going on for years. The more accomplished u are the pickings are slimmer. All of these women have professional degrees. So if there white counterparts are married and didnt settle why does society ask us to settle. 1st off the interview didn't say "there aren't any good black men" The women in the interview just want a man preferably black. The segment just stated facts, We live in a society where its easier for a black dude to go to jail than to even get accepted to college. I'm still young but I've known what I've wanted. I AM a bit picky though when it comes to men (well I'm quite picky with just about everything) but to say he has to be at least like 250 lbs, 6 ft and make at least $100 000 a year is crazy. And I agree with what one of the guys said above, he doesn't have to be making $100 000 when I meet him (or at any point in our marriage/relationship) because obviously he's building towards a higher salary. Settling is a personal choice... and honestly... most of those marriages don't make it.. they lead to divorces. So why even bother?... don't get me wrong.. some are exceptions.
I don't think that women have to "lower" their standards but I do think that they have to have more realistic standards. These women have a point. I was just reflecting on my cohort of African-American students that entered college when I did. Now that I'm a senior there are only about 10% of black men of have made it to this stage with me. Compare that to about 40% women. But that is no excuse.....These women are clearly bitter and have internal problems and issues they need to work on before the can be in a healthy relationship.
And I'm not lookin for a 6figure. I will take a mailman, firefighter, construction worker. Lets just put our lil money together and make it. Man, this reminds me so much of the movie, "Daddy's Little Girls." Black men are also guilty of being particular. Are we overlooking good Black men and women because they are single parents, work blue collar jobs or are in a different income bracket? I meet men who don't know anything about me but simply like me because I don't have children and work an office job. I could be a serial killer for all they know. The woman of their dreams could very well be a single parent.
And at the same time it's not so bad, I guess. If God intended me to be married I would be. And if I was married I would not be able to move across seas. So in all everything has its place and time. I'm in no rush but it's discouraging! Especially when your peers and friends are having weddings left and right.
Also, black women and men especially take very different career paths. Black men usually go the military or trade school route while black women attend college. The black men in the military often marry women from foreign countries where they are stationed. Hence, one reason for the fact that more black men marry outside their race. If we could find ways to bridge that gap so the black men and women could mix and mingle more that could possibly have some impact on increasing the marriage rate.

To simplify things let's say that white people only marry white people and black people only marry black people. If blacks only make up about 12% of the us population - at any given time we're going to be surrounded by non-blacks. That means you have to look harder to find someone suitable for you. It's just as simple as that.
Meanwhile, for white people, anywhere they go they are the majority so if skin color is their main criteria - they're pretty much set and it's a lot easier for them to whittle it down from there.
t shouldnt be about what dollar amount he makes, as long as you and your man make enough combined to be secure, comfortable and have all you need even if you can't have everything you want when you want it. Now, I don't know about black women not being able to find good black men because I'm not a black woman. But I do know that as a black male, I could say the same about a good black woman. My first wife was black, and one of the most beautiful women that I have, to this day, ever laid eyes on. But she was batshyt crazy and evil. I have dated numerous black women since then, and have only a few that weren't racist against other groups of people (big turn off), so drama filled that it gave me a headache to deal with her, or so hard that at times you thought you were dating a man.

I personally love every race. I've been through phases. I remember when I only liked white men, and then it was the Asians, and not too long ago I had a THING for Italians. I've always liked all races but a certain race would stand out more. And it's not because I don't like black men.
I don't care about race. I just want a man who can support me, treat me right and love the Lord. The guy I'm seeing now is VERY attractive and so sweet. But he's not into the Church scene as much as I would like but we're working on it. And that makes a good relationship.

I had to look outside of what I was normally dating to find him. Now, I am a young black woman and I hope and pray to find a good black man one day. I haven't come across any as of yet , but then again I have time to do so. However, it is a shame that I haven't heard of many. There are a few that's for sure ,but I would love for that few to become the majority. When I say "good", I don't mean having a lot of money. While that's all great there are other things that are important.

Lastly, I agree with Allahuakbar. It's time for sisters to take responsibility for the way we are treated by black men. We need to raise our standards of self respect before we can be respected by our men. There are so many angles I can take on this subject; I’ll try to be brief. In my experience, I have never had trouble meeting black men in all their variety. Love my black men. But, something I have noticed since about 19, guys don’t care for women to have attained much on their own. I didn’t read much into it at the time when as I sat with a boyfriend of mine and he plainly told me I was too “self-reliant”. He was 25 college educated, not where he wanted to be career wise. I didn’t understand self-reliance as a problem and we broke up shortly thereafter. Nearly every boyfriend I had has said something to the effect of “you deserve better” and ended up breaking up shortly thereafter. These all were good dudes and they know I am a good woman. Ironically, these were educated guys and still reaching fulfillment. Or guys established in their careers and feeling as though it was not enough to fulfill my needs. I can only do so much ego stroking telling you, you are good enough before my own esteem takes a hit. Don’t do it.
I’ve always been a humble person. I’m not needy or flashing. Maybe, I should feel flattered that they think highly of me. Perhaps they picture me with a certified baller. I am ready for lasting love. I have to take my time to find someone who I KNOW fits the bill. Give me the “better” man now, rather than find out later he is not secure enough to fit the bill. What I have and want out of life does not work against you if you are my partner and working with me. Let’s work at it and build together. We can’t have a home if I am your competitor. I do think it was very naive for these women to participate in this new story where they basically are saying the majority of black men are sh*t. Honestly, our community knows our downfalls and we don’t need to broadcast them to the rest of the world. From the standpoint of a black woman, I agree there are slim pickings when it comes to finding a decent black man. No, this story is entirely true. And MTO as far as you citing the US government a crediable source for statistics... Please remember it took them days to get water toe the Superdome. I don't think its too reliable. NPR has a broad cast about the same thing. In it they talk about how BLACK MEN are more likely to date or marry outside their race and BLACK WOMEN are more likely to date or marry outside their eduacation or income. So if these 50% black women are married its probably not to a man who is of the same socioeconomic level.

I have come across plenty of good men, so it makes me wonder what a woman is doing to not have found a good black man. People I hate it as much as the next person but we have to learn to face our own demons. There is a shortage of black men who want to step up and be husbands, I know plenty who want to be boyfriends and lovers, but will stay with a girl for 10 yrs and never marry her because they dont want to let go of their lifestyle, and some women are so desperate to have a man they allow it..

Okay here are my experiences with men. I have dated two black men. One was controlling and confused and the other one was super horny and her predominately kept thinking about sex sex and sex and it was just too much. I am single now but I do have a nice friendship with a guy and he's white. I don't care who I date as long as he treats me like a queen. I think that those statistics that the woman was saying was wrong though and those women were a little too picky.
Now that I think about it. I have 5 aunts over the age of 40 who r not married & 2 of them never have. I remember growing up & saying men weren't nothing but dogs & fairy tales really r just fairy tales. So far they've been right but I think that there gas 2b a good 1 out there somewhere. My father is a good man but he dogged my step mom 4 nearly 15 yrs b4 he got his life right with God & changed.

Why are so many ladies worried about a man being over 6 feet tall when the average American male is only 5'10"? That is ridiculous. Or if he doesn't drive a certain type of car. A lot of "good black men" are unattractive, or have corny unappealing personalities. I find that a lot of charismatic, confident, physically appealing men are players that use their looks and "swag" to dog women out. I am not saying that attractive charming "good black men" don't exist, they are just are hard to find ; especially single one's. People initially are attracted to looks and personality, and then go deeper, that is probabally why lots of good men get overlooked, and thugs and players get chosen. I don't know if this is a self-image issue with black men or is its just the laws of attraction/nature,esp of Western society. I think it may be a little of both because I believe there are many black men,unlike we think,that don't want "black" children and don't want their children to look like them. I know this is usually a black woman issue,but I think some black men have these issues too. When men (or women)complain about black women being too aggressive,too independent,too fat,too much weave,too promiscious,etc, I believe that is an excuse to justify why they don't like black women. I would rather one say that he is simply more attracted to another race woman because I know plenty of women,plenty, just like in the video, who don't fit the stereotypes,but remain single and childless.

I happen to be a black man. I can say that our culture right now does not prioritize the qualities that are required to be a good husband or father. When you ask a black woman what she wants in a husband she will almost always talk about looks, swagger, and appearance of money. They aren't looking for respect, intelligence, wisdom, or integrity. If you look for the former without the latter your relationship will be doomed.
Meanwhile if those men who are worthy meet a woman of any other race who loves him for him, then he is labeled as "turning his back" on black women. I make it a point to try to talk to women while I'm in my work clothes. That's an easy way to weed out the shallow people. I may not be speaking about all demographics but I'm in the hood and this IS what its like.
I have always been into learning and expanding my brain along with my body. That classified me as geeky. Physical appearance aside, I am a nerd, just a very good looking nerd. I have had many women crush on me but I can count the black girls on one hand. I have always loved black women, from the high yellows to the chocolate bunnies. But I have little luck with them. I have been dissed, turned down, and outright insulted because I was "cute but corny". That means that I have dated outside my race a lot. I never go looking for non-black women but I refuse to front like I'm something I am not. I STILL WANT A BLACK FAMILY. Maybe its to show the world we can do it or maybe I want something that I never had.
All I'm saying is many black women want a man who is Nino Brown on the street and Cliff Huxtable at home. That is impossible. The compromised integrity that makes you hard on the street also allows you to make poor decisions like cheating and violence.

Men know that there is a shortage and treat women poorly because they know they have the upper hand. They know if you don't "act right" they can get someone the next day. I have had relationships mostly with younger guys, because they have less baggage. The older black guys in their late 30s all have baby mama drama and kids by more than one woman. I am a supportive black woman, I adore black men. I have a ton of black males friends and I do my best to uplift them. I am even friends with my exes because am I a good person and they love me. I am just trying keep it real, I am not stereotyping. I have a good supportive man in my life who is black. I was able to quit my job to go to school because he had my back. When he got laid off and his car broke down I had his back just the same.

This type of black man entire demeanor is different. I saw a few black women who this applied to as well, but it was especially true for black men. My husband said the exact same thing. I understand what these women are saying i posted this on facebook last night and all my friend commented. I go to a mostly white university and for one there is more black women then men in college and graduate. There are not that many black couples people just "talk" and those black men who do have a girlfriend none of them are black. Its sad because I look around at my campus this will be half of us.

I'm a teacher at a majority black school. The black boys in my class feel that it is ok to cuss adults out and be disrespectful. I find many, not all, of my boys to be extremely lazy. They don’t want to do the work and just brush it off like it doesn’t matter. They all have these rappers as idols. They wear their pants as low as their ankles because they think it’s cool. They feel like they must be disrespectful because they want to impress the young girls. The quote “Women love their sons but raise their daughters” is the truest statement. We as black women baby our boys. We don’t teach them how to be men; however, we teach our women to be strong and independent. We have to do better. We must teach our young men to be strong and show them how to be providers and teach our girls at young ages not to settle. Because these young girls settle, they are teaching these boys that it’s ok and cute to be lazy and disrespectful. Trust me, if every girl made a boy make at least a B before dating them, all of the boys in my class would be bring home Bs…. The idea that a woman should lower her standards is ridiculous!!! In most interracial marriages the white or non black spouse is LESS than the black spouse i.e. less wealthy, or less attractive, or less talented, or less of a social standing or less years of life left (old). 85% of black men who make over 100k per year marry non black women. So these black women do have slim pickings. Could these black women marry someone of any race if they were willing to marry someone old, or unattractive or poor or uneducated? Probably. Would the marriage last? Probably not. Because the incompatibly and lack of attraction would probably tear the marriage apart. The probability of these black women finding a compatible mate of any race is statistically improbable. But not impossible. Black women who cannot find a mate may be better off alone than in bad company a bad spouse can wreck your life, health and finances. Look at Tina Turner’s and Dorothy Dandridge’s experiences with both white and black men. If a single successful black women is over 40 and they want children they can adopt 1 or 2 or have an ex-boyfriends child and raise them in a sister circle i.e. Mocha Moms or with the help of an extended family. Is it not almost 2010?? Who says that the man has to make as much as the woman or even work at all. No one complains when the caucasion men become stay at home dads or just take care of the home. so why is it still being stereotyped w/ black men being broke ass men. Be happy if you have a good black man whether he has a job or not.
It so funny your jealous of white women getting married at 25, but what your missing is how many of those marriages last more than five years. Sure anyone can get married young but real question is do you have what it takes to make it last? You sit there judging us brothas but turn that judgement on yourself. Sure you have a PHD sure you drive a Benz but you can't cook, you can't clean a house, hell you work so much you don't have time to raise kids. Does that make you a viable option for a wife? Why should we marry a woman that we have to schedule time to see.
It's funny you say that there are no good black men. That prison and drugs cancel them out of the running for being a viable mates. Like they don't deserve a second chance at making a life for themselves. You didn't have a problem with them when you was smoking their weed or spending the money they had to hustle to make. Honestly would they do what they do if you would want them without the bling? We all share responsibility for what goes on in our communities. At the end of the day we all have problems, you are no better we all have skeletons in our closet.
If all white woman were happy and Married there would not be reality shows like The BAchlor, Tough Love, and some many more that primarily focus on single White woman. I'm so sick and tired of the BS that the main stream media spew around. These woman are single because they chose to be plan and simple. Most of them have let the career and status go to their heads. If black men are so bad why don't they go find one of another race, because there's something about them that turn men off.
All though I have no problem finding a black man, I agree with these woman and Steve Harvey. Black men always trying to make it seem like we're the one with the problem and we're bitter. But we're bitter because they don't know how to be men and we have to be the man and the woman in many relationships and that has made us very strong over decades and now they complain.

Wow. I am a single brotha in ATL. I work as a Engineer and I have a home based credit business as well. I have a 12 year son who lives with me full time. My house is in the north suburbs (4500sqft). I got two car and a bike. My engineering job brings in 6 figures and home base does around 5k. I have a high school education. Now in ATL where the ratio in 20 to 1 I still cant find a women with her shty together. And those women on that video looking for a Millionaire. Now dont get me wrong I have females that I just mess around with. BUT I would give anything to have a BLACK QUEEN.
My mother and father taught me how to treat women, I am never disrepectful toward black Queens, but I think BET, VH1 well Media has screwed up the perception of what Black Men are. We have some good guys out here. But the not producers, rapppers, d-boys, Athlete's, etc etc. I have friends who are Engineers, Cops, Finance, and own small companies. I really wish that black people would stop talking about features. Africa has so many tribes and not one tribe looks alike. They have keen features without being mixed with white or some have big noses also. White people have big noses so what is the point of talking about features. Those statements are not even true. The women in the 70's to 80's that were stars were considered beautiful were also dark in skin colour. I am not understanding why can't ones' features be accepted and claimed as their own. It sounds like if the black woman is beautiful than she has white features. If a black women is ugly than she is black. How about G-d made her so he gave her features. What you are saying is giving another race way to much power in your head. Stop reading the racist klan description books. Many black people have learned about themselves and their looks from racial stereotyping books. This is what is getting your self-esteem next to nothing. Like yourselves and know your people than you wouldn't dislike one another when you see another black person not fit into that klan box.
The problem with black people is that we must always place the blame on someone else. I dont ever hear white men and women blaming each other for not being able to find a suitable mate. I also get irked about this topic b/c black women are always told to lower their standards. I never hear black men or men for that matter being told to alter their preferences. If a man limits his dating pool to women of a specifc weight and shape-that's acceptable, but if a woman, especially a sista, wants a man who is at least 6'0 w/ at least an undergraduate degree then she is being unrealistic...and God forbid she wants him to have good credit then she is asking for too much
I would not call the women in the video bitter but I would call them jaded. They are looking at things from their point of view not really seeing the bigger picture. To become sucdcessful you have to put 100 percent of your energy and focus into what you do. What type of relationships can you foster if your foucsed on your career? How likely would it be that a career minded woman would slow down long enough to get with someone looking to be serious. So you pick relationship and men that you know wont last. But then you type cast all men by the guys you are seeing.
The mistake I sense they are making is they are looking to make a relationship with the wrong type of guy. In truth there are two types of us guys ones that you take home and and have funny with for a night or two and those you make a family with. It takes a level of maturity and common sense to figure out which is which. Don't blame a black man for marrying a white woman blame yourself, odds were you was not checking for him when he wanted to get married. As a black man I can't say I have a preference between white or black it just comes down to if I'm in love with the one I'm with.
I am still chocking on the advise from Steve Harvey saying the women should go for an 'OLDER MAN" WTF!! I feel that any available older man is either married, divorced, separated, and just wants arm candy. Oh yeah, he may be generous with the cash but that plays out after awhile. Then, the sista is labeled as a "HOME WRECKER" She did not come that far to escort her older man back and forth to his Dr. appts. I say sista's stay the way that you are don't settle for less when you can obtain more! Don't become desperate and willing to share!
Quite simply, a lot of black women aren't married and/or have trouble finding a black man is because MOST black men today are with white or other non-black women! And most of us really don't wanna have to resort to dating a white or "other" man. Some feel like they just rather be alone then if they can't have a black man, and in a way I don't blame them...
