There is not purpose for me to divulge any round numbers in terms of my salary but I'm certainly make a decent salary...considering I'm divorced and my husband was the bread-winner.

I think anyone who automatically labels this as untrue is a fool in denial, and probably falls into the "broke bitch" category that this study is discussing. I believe this, easily. When I think about the women I know, I automatically think to the clients I have at work, and they are almost all 30-something, white women or sometimes foriegn women, and then men of all races. I rarely get the opportunity to work with a Black woman, and I'm in real estate, so that is a DIRECT reflection of our economy. Another thing is that the women I am friends with and GREW UP WITH, are all broke Black women with children and absolutely no money in the bank. All of them over 21, all of them living at their grandmother's house, and sometimes there is 3 or 4 generations in one home. I can only honestly say I didn't fall into that boat because I refused to get pregnant and I refused to live at home and therefore had to find something else to do with my time, or I would be RIGHT in there with the rest of my friends, and that's some real sh!t. I know many women who work for the government but these women, I can honestly say, they are not EDUCATED about saving money, spending money, how the economy works, etc. If you are not educated about that kind of thing, how can you expect to have a net worth over five dollars? I think we as women need to be more realistic and stop BEING IN DENIAL about the problems that are staring us DEAD IN THE FACE. Instead of blaming it on the white media or white conglomorations or denying it because it made us look bad, maybe you should look AT YOURSELF. For every one finger you point, there are FOUR fingers pointing right back at YOU. YOU! Stop skirting around the blame and look at yourself and what YOU do, because I would bet some of MY hard earned dollars that 95% of the women who comment here and displace the blame are absolutely broke, and CLAIMING they have money because this is the internet and you can simply say anything without being honest or honorable.

Thank you! For owning it, living it and conquering it. Yes, this is a true statistic but that doesn't mean it has to be true for all of us. I used to make major financial mistakes too, I think most people do in their youth. There is a certain point where you have to grow up and get your finances in order, and denying the hard facts and evidence is not how that is done. Many women are stuck in that endless cycle and being unaware of it is part of the problem. IF ANYTHING, this article is a beautiful thing that white people (or whoever created this study) sent down upon us because now we see the reality in plain numbers and we can now begin on working to fix that. Oh I can offer some constructive criticism. Don't spend so much money. I don't live lavishly although I love nice things. I make excellent money, but I think about the future. Always pay yourself and try to put as much as you can in your savings acct. For low income families, if your city has an IDA(Individual something Account), can't remember the name, utilize it. For every $1 you put in the city will match either 3 or 4. You can then put that money towards school or as a down payment on a new home.
Save your income tax checks. That is a huge amount of money, and a great opportunity to increase your capital. Shop around and look for bargains. Utilize programs run by your cities for food and clothing etc. If you get child support put some of that money away after you pay bills. Don't go and get your hair done and your nails did lol. |

Dead beat moms and dads that don't contribute is no excuse to not think of savvy ways to save and put away your money. You might have to work 2 or 3 jobs, but then you have to think about what you do with the money and use that to your advantage.

No, the study is a reflection of reality. My net worth is not $5.00 or I wouldn't speak on this topic. I think that if you are in denial about this being true, your net worth must be $5.00... because the truth hurts. I'm not beating anyone up, I am pointing out to women on MTO that they are acting an ass and it's no wonder why we are in the state we are in. But actually, part of my job is consulting homebuyers, and I live in a mostly Black city, which is why it makes me sad when I go to work and I don't many Black clients. Do you own your own home? Does your family members or friends? 2) Many black men with children do not take care of them or provide child support, which therefore leaves single parent black women somewhat impoverished
3)In the workplace, black women rarely make the same salary as their white female co-workers, even if they are doing the same job! The gap in pay can be astounding. |
